Classification: Information
King’s Cross & St Pancras is a “Gateway” station, a space torn between rapidity and slowness, a collision of speeds from all directions (Trains, Tube, Bus,) an intermediate zone of suspension. It acts as the threshold that controls the imports & exports of the people into the area. The loss of control over speed has become a problem such that, more efforts are spent on synchronizing due to the increased circulation, passing the threshold of comfort thus generating counter-productive effects.

THEME Urban Reactivation, Mobility, Social, Transportation, Tempo This project is a reconfiguration of the current transportation hubs, which controls the tempo of various modes of transport, and presents information through the use of current technology via the city fabric. The project reuses the current model of transportation hubs and King’s Cross & St Pancras station as the representative of the scenario. This is in response to the failure of the current archaic model to appropriate the technologies of the digital age, thus causing inefficiencies in speed.

Approach from a social point of view, free from architectural constraints, the social commentary is fromed through observations of the city and aspects of living/mobility. Drawing inspirations from precedents such as B. Fuller & C. Price, who challenged the way to use architecture for the people through technologies, the project approaches design through similar methods.

Design Decisions After taking inspiration from the Bionic Tower by Vicent Callebaut Architectures, the design of the tower took form with triangular plan and three legs and an attempt for aerodynamic modification on the edges. The tower is conceived by using the green guide and 3d-modelled using as a sweep tool. The tower will be 100 meters, therefore 25 floors with 4m each. The model was made in the sacle of 1:100 A more prominent single brace was used as the lateral support to emphasize the curved form. The braces were done every two floors in order to achieve a 90 degrees between every tie.

The Bionic Tower
THEME Technical Studies, Fabrication, Design & Make, Load Testing The technical studies project examine how the structural elements of a building carry load. Physical models are made and load-tested to predict the static and dynamic behaviour of structures under load and to illustrate deformation and failure. Emphasis is also placed on finding idealised conceptual models to demonstrate structural behaviour, in particular the stability of the whole building structure. Examinations are made of how forces create stresses and deformations in architectural structures, taking into account material properties.

Forensic Illuminaries
Architectural Association School of Architecture Tutors: Christopher Pierce, Christopher Matthews
“Curving, living, unpredictable line which runs in dimensions unknown to mathematics is for me the incarnation of everything that forms a contrast to the modern world between brutal mechanicalness and religious beauty in life.” -Alvar Aalto,Villa Mairea, Noormarkku, Finland, 1939
SITE Säynätsalo, Jyvaäskyla, Finland On the rocky eastern side of the island of Säynätsalo, intellectually, physically and emotionally immersed in the built and unbuilt legacy of Alvar Aalto, situating the projects in proximity to his town hall and carrying out experiments.
THEME Urban Reactivation, Fabrication, Design & Make, Light, Nature This project is an attempt to render subjective experience as objective reality. It recreates so-called ‘actual’ / physical reality out of perceived reality - that is to build the Real from Experience. An experiential route taken at Aalto’s Experimental House is the basis of the project, anaylising the various nature encounters, light exposure sets the fundamental data which morphs the form structure. Set around the event of Saint Lucia day on the 13th of December, the structure acts as a transitional space and source of power for the council chamber in the poorly illuminated Säynätsalo Town Hall.
PROCESS Fabrication, Site Analysis, Research, Site Application Operating between fine art and architecture – or what Aalto termed ‘artek’– following a non-programme-based design approach, emphasising an array of types of movement, and always, as Cedric Price once said, ‘delight in the unknown’.

Night walks with a heavy step Round yard and hearth, As the sun departs from earth, Shadows are brooding. There in our dark house, Walking with lit candles, Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!
Natten går tunga fjät rund gård och stuva; kring jord, som sol förlät, skuggorna ruva. Då i vårt mörka hus, stiger med tända ljus, Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.
Night walks grand, yet silent, Now hear its gentle wings, In every room so hushed, Whispering like wings. Look, at our threshold stands, White-clad with light in her hair, Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!
Natten går stor och stum nu hörs dess vingar i alla tysta rum sus som av vingar. Se, på vår tröskel står vitklädd med ljus i hår Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.
Darkness shall take flight soon, From earth's valleys. So she speaks Wonderful words to us: A new day will rise again From the rosy sky… Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!
Mörkret ska flykta snart ur jordens dalar så hon ett underbart ord till oss talar. Dagen ska åter ny stiga ur rosig sky Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.

THEME Projects Review is the culmination of the year’s work at the Architectural Association, showcasing student work from Intermediate 9. Curation of this exhibition takes inspiration from Junya Ishigami and his forest like pavilions. It is an re-creation of the Finnish wilderness experienced collectively throughout the unit, also mirroring the three islands of Jyväskyla where the unit projects are sited. The exhibition also takes in account of the unit’s out puts - large format composite drawings and physical models of various sizes and materials from card to ceramics.

Baroque Transitions
THEME The ornamental roof design and wall-décor sits on the lower terrace of the Architectural Association at 36 Bedford Square. The structure’s beauty not only lies in its baroque ornamentation that was inspired by the decoration found throughout the AA, but is rather found in its attention to detail and its earnestness to achieve the perfect ‘tight fit’. Cantilevers match the grooves of the ledges on the upper terrace; the design is modified specifically to the slant in the boundaries of the drain. All these aspects encouraged a more site-specific design, in which both site and design had a mutual dependence. At the same time, the roof and wall-décor extend across the site in a very fluid way. Both of these aspects in the design contributed to its successes in both integrating with the site whilst also keeping a certain independence from it, creating what we define as a pending structure.

SITE Southwark, London, UK Inspired by the banking system, and with the increasing demands for agricultural production, a new institution is created to provide for the project demands of the community in the London Borough of Southwark, and an attempt to contribute to the creation of the Union High Street. The prototypical institutions that were adopted are the bank and the farm.

“Rather than a series of unrelated spaces and projects, and the awareness that the city could both obfuscate and exaggerate class divisions.”
- Victoria E.Thompson
THEME Urban Fabric Disection - Agritectural Banking Farm In our storybook towns, the street is bracketed by the Bank, Library, Post Office, and Town Hall. These grand buildings are designed to exemplify modernity and progress. Many of these institutions are now virtually redundant, as are the institutions that they represented. In the second term we will be asking how these high street dinosaurs might be re-invented, re-programmed andknitted back into the fabric of our cities. Working with a set of sites along London’s river edge, through examining the physical fabric of these spaces and the possible function of the institutions that we are re-designing, we will look for a new hybrid of types that engage with the institutional life of the town/city in the 21st century.
PROCESS Site Analysis, Research, Programme Through close examination of site, researching into the past and re-interpreting the institutions, a site strategy was created among the innovation of a new programme for the new institution with adjusted function to culture and site.

THEME The figure will be used as a departure point as we work through several exercises that enable us to study tone, mass, line, simple underlying structures, in a range of drawing media and in short and longer pose from male and female models. We will also explore concept sketches, viewpoint, biomorphic improvisations and remind ourselves of the Matisse maxim"exactitude isn't truth."
