3.1 Caledonian Forest

In contrast, Southbridge is everywhere fragmented: a clear gap between rich and poor, a huge difference in the quality of life of the people, a deteriorating living environment and a host of other problems. This means that it is not enough to simply link the different types of space together through the wind towers, but more importantly to combine them into an integrated system, which was so much needed in Edinburgh during the 'Auld Reekie' period.

The Caledonian Forest is an ancient temperate rainforest in the Scottish Highlands that has survived for so long because of its complex and stable ecosystem, each part of which is closely interconnected.

The soil is fertile from the rain to allow the roots to feed the plants, the pine trees provide great shade, which provides excellent conditions for shade-loving plants, and the tall trees give them plenty of support in times of high winds. The fact that lichens live on the forest floor does not mean that they are unimportant. The many lichen acids they secrete erode the rock surface, causing it to gradually crack and break up, which, together with natural weathering, gradually creates a soil layer on the surface of the rock, creating the conditions for other plants to grow. The increased abundance of the forest also provides habitat for insects and animals. Throughout the forest, the various parts are not only interdependent and benefit from each other, each part's output is used by the others, but also they have imposed upon the vast majority of living beings a unique environment: the atmosphere. 3.2 Chasing wind

The trunk connects the different parts of the tree, which are not homogeneous in appearance and play different roles and functions within the tree itself. Therefore, analyzing the shape of each part and the corresponding functional relationships will help us to reconstruct the spatial form and function of South Bridge.

In the course of the fieldwork, the topography and the height of the trees made it impossible to analyze their composition at close range, but it was possible to use the wind as an aid to observation. The reason for this is that the feeling of the wind blowing through the forest varies from one location to another, and this feeling in fact implies the state of the different locations, so what is needed is to visualize the wind.

The first step was to record the appearance of the trees in different positions in the forest through photographs (a tree is a complete system in itself and a full interpretation is necessary) and then to restore them by finding branches of different sizes. In view of the invisible nature of the wind, spray paint was chosen to simulate the wind blowing through the forest (on the one hand, the air pressure during the use of the paint can be interpreted as wind, and on the other hand, the paint itself is colored to leave traces that can be easily observed and studied).

3.3 Regulate Wetness

As mentioned earlier, Southbridge had a serious dampness and odour problem, and during the Auld Reekie period, polluted air filled the city and damp air still existed in the interior of Southbridge. So the first problem for the Heterotopia wind tower was to cleanse the pollution and move the damp air to a place where it would fit.

The trunk of a tree plays an extremely important role for a tree, on the one hand it connects all parts of the tree and on the other hand it transports nutrients to all parts and thus promotes their growth. The wind tower is adapted to this logic. Instead of starting at the bottom of the building, the wind tower continues down to the arch inside the South Bridge. The dampness of the arches is improved by transferring the moisture from the interior by means of the wind. Considering plants can maintain the density and quality of the atmosphere at a correct level.31 The planting of a significant number of plants inside the wind tower will therefore help to absorb the exhaust air from the building and improve the atmosphere through photosynthesis, while on the other hand the moisture inside the south bridge will be fully utilised (as nutrients for plant growth) to regulate the humidity inside the building. At the same time, taking into account the ecological diversity, additional space is provided inside the wind tower to provide habitats for other animals and insects, such as birds, to enhance its systemic nature.

On the other hand, soil can be added to the walls of the wind tower, so that the soil can absorb and drain water to regulate the internal environment.

3.4 Reconnect Relationship

In Southbridge and Edinburgh during the Auld Reekie period there was a clear division of class and social relations, and it was important to reconnect these broken relationships. Faced with similar problems, Koolhaas chose to use eleven different types of space in Exodus, or the voluntary prisoners of architecture, to form a vast horizontal heterotopia. The vertical orientation of the heterotopia is more appropriate for the South Bridge itself, given its thick walls and the complex vertical spaces that make it difficult for people to see each other from different positions.

In breaking down the boundaries of the vertical dimension, there is a need for a presence that can cut through visual blindness and architectural boundaries and still be accessible to reinforce the connection between people. Similar to the nature of wind, sound itself is invisible, but this means that it is not completely blocked by boundaries such as walls. The functional aspect of the wind tower and the surrounding buildings is therefore chosen to be musical, aiming to connect people through the interactive nature of music.

The space within the voluntary prisoners of architecture includes different types of spaces, such as private and public, order and conflict, which inspired the transformation of the arch inside the South Bridge into an underground theatre, and the building above it into a music restaurant, a creative studio for independent musicians, a rehearsal hall and a lounge.

3.4 Reconnect Relationship

The different spaces around the chimney enjoy the good environment with its purified air and the right humidity. Musicians can stand and play in the wind tower at any time during the creation of their music. But people do not always play in harmony with each other, and there is a risk of conflict due to differences in ideas. I would expect such conflicts to occur frequently. The reason for this is that it is through the clash of different ideas that better work is produced. At the same time, by having recesses inside the wind towers, birds can be attracted to live in them, which on the one hand increases the ecological diversity of Nanqiao. On the other hand, the sounds made by the birds and insects themselves can naturally be used as accompaniment, thus stimulating the musicians to create more melodies and phrases related to nature and the forest.

3.4.1 Capricci 1

One of the spaces connected by heterotopic chimney is a studio for independent musicians. Here, musicians can freely communicate and create. By breaking down part of the walls of the wind tower, the earth and plants from it can enter the interior, thus linking the wind tower to the space. Instead of conventional furniture, tables and chairs of different shapes and sizes have been chosen for the furniture. These stone tables and chairs also serve as a support for the growth of the plants, allowing them to expand further in the space as time progresses.

[FACTORY] : DRAMA THEATER WIND ORGAN CHIMNEY

Drama theater acts as Factory focusing on the logistics organisation. wind as enzyme in the organs breaks the boundaries between the organ and bridge system and integrate the chimneys with vaults to form theater.Being at the lowest point of the south bridge, theater needs to integrate logistical functions and public transport needs from cowgate to south bridge. It is also the wettest location, so how to improve ventilation and create a pleasant environment with vaults is a practical problem to be solved by the wind organ.
