DESIGN VISION The design aims to achieve two aspects the inner sensorial atmosphere and the outer relationship to the larger environment of Los Angeles. It aims to create an object in the plains of it as an intense cultural, artistic and public node. RELATIONSHIP TO LOS ANGELES Most Los Angeles building is a pure functional box containing the programs. The interior fantasy and moments seldom reveals to the plains of id. The concept is to challenge the traditional functional box and propose an unconventional form to reveal the inner activities outward. The transformation process is to wrap the traditional gallery box and explode the social programs outward to the urban context. By doing that, the wrapper also deforms from the box shape to reinforce the rotating/exploding effects. The act of exploding and revealing the inside make it an object with an extroverted relationship to the plains of Los Angeles. It is intended to be destination and urban center for cultural and artistic activities.

SENSORIAL AGENDA Iridescent, pneumatic and glowing--attracting Los Angeles public to the particular artistic object in the plains of id. pneumatic

For the sensorial part, the project is interested in the blur and fusion of colors as well as the pneumatic and inflating feeling on the outside. It unpacks three levels of sensorial experience sequentially---approaching the building, within the intermediate layer of social space, and within the gallery space. From the outside, the building is wrapped in inflated etfe skin, accentuating the extroverted relationship to the lively culture of Los Angeles. In the intermediate social layer, the sense also highlights the liveness and art energy, where the etfe skin is reflected from polished metal. While proceeding to the inner layer of gallery space, the sense changes again from extroverted to introverted. The sculptive gallery space contrast with

Skyvillage is in the form of one architectural organism that bridges over freeway interruptions. It is packed with a variety of programs of human activities---landscape gardens, theaters, library, gallery, restaurants, bars, amusement park, shopping center, hotels, apartments and offices. It aims to connect people from those four segregated quadrants and boost their social interactions together “ in the air . Vi e w to fre e wa y a n d g re e n fi l tra ti o n to we r

In this golden age of social media, architecture didn’t belong to any single user group or the privileged client who owns architecture. Social media enables the consumption of architecture instantaneously without the limitation of geography and class. Once a selfie or snapshot about this piece of architecture gets posted online, it instantly becomes part of the collective consciousness. Everyone has the privilege to participate, comment and interact with the built urban and architecture space, actively shaping millions of new perspectives with Eiffel tower, the Louvre Pyramid, or the Seattle library etc. The impact is double sided. Valuable architecture also impacts the public and community in a much wider scope not only through the immediacy of physical interaction, but also in its social pursuit and cultural impact on social media. Therefore the thesis projects explore the very prevailing cultural idea of selfies and discuss what architecture could act on the cultural trend.

click ! click !

The first project reveals the cultural phenomenon of selfie and emoticon. The second project began to set up the dialogue between selfie and architectural context. Finally, the third project questions what the contextual/architectural component in selfie could play in defining the characteristics of the our selfies and lifestyles. The criticality of the project questions the surreal quality of covert surveillance which selfie culture brings about under the open public space . The selfie control examines the workspace scenario, where surveillance is renewed through the invention of selfie.

Selfies posted online hide, fake, beautify and exaggerate the original facial features : the skins, the tones and physical contours. They exaggerate it to the extent that only the nuance of emotions are retained. That emotional translation is concept of this mask: at the inside, you saw your real facial expression; on the outside, you react to people with the emoticons you intend. Your reactions are substituted by this changing emoticons.

The station consists of one screen wall of flippable ipad screens and two screen walls of reflected mirrors to reflect surrounding tourist scenes. The proposal site is Campidoglio Plaza at Rome, where the rounded tourist kiosks is situated at the center as a group selfie tourist station. Tourists go inside and take group-traveling photos with the real campigdolio panoramic scenes mixed with the artificial ROME. Tourists could only realize the word ROME vwhen taken the selfie at the distance with the cameras fixed on the booth. When seeing with naked eyes, people are often obsessed with themselves in the mirror, failing to see the bigger scenes. The psychology often happens in sightseeing. Visitors view the place not through real experience, but through framed selfies.

2 Surveillance Surveillance existed long time ago in human history, from the panopticon prison , to multifamily neiborhoods, to community housing options, to working and school scenarios. The entertainment feature of selfies seems opposite to severity of surveillance. However, in the age of big data, the selfies posted online have formed an unseen network of surveillance.

Feast culture inherits from traditional Chinese rituals and happens throughout people’s life journey, in every important life event. In ancient China, most rituals are oriented around family celebrations such as wedding and funeral where family members identify with each other and the bigger collective community. Without primary religions, people still host rituals with great attentions and details, since people rely on the tight network of families instead of “the Buddha or God” to live. Traditions of Chinese ritual have died away. Ironically, the core of ritual---the feast--is pushed to another level in modern Chinese society. People today would launch lavish feasts when having baby, getting married, reaching career peak, lobbying business partners and celebrating the 60th birthday. The bigger they are, the stronger they prove their capability and showcase their networks. They would even host feast for blind dating and divorce. The life journey turns into a pilgrimage to feast, in which everyone wants to be the spectacle and meanwhile feverishly participate other people’s feast. It is truly a cultural spectacle in modern China. The proposal is a hall accommodating all typical Chinese ritual events in a people’s life journey, from a new born baby,to adult ceremony, to graduating, getting married ,reaching success, having baby and becoming old. It aggregates all the ritual programs into the ultimate one and gives spectators the experience of a series of life cycles. The design of the hall intentionally becomes aesthetically ritual, integrating many eastern element and ritual atmosphere. Would architecture induce a more sacred ritual activity, or reinforce the rooted feast culture?

The HALL OF ULTIMATE RITUAL FALL 2016 | Personal Work The Ritual and Feast in modern Chinese society This thesis proposal differs from typical architecture project, in the aspect that it aims to narrate the ironic cultural phenomenon in modern China. The intellectual criticality behind the proposal matters far more than the standard advocation of building the mass. It continues my fifth year thesis thinking about social spectacle and how that plays into architecture. The examined spectacle subject shifts from pop culture--selfie culture to the contemporary Chinese society---feast culture. It discusses the renewaled social value of Chinese, especially in urbanised area.

SECTION PERSPECTIVE

The aggregation of programs appears surreal. However, it deeply aggregates and reflects and feast culture in Chinese society. People consider feast no longer as a meal, but as a “serious ritual” to realize their social resources and seek recognition from the immediate social networks. The collective value still roots in Chinese culture, urging people to realize their value in others’ eyes. Only through seeking identification from the majority (family, friends and acquaintance), they can be relieved to continue the life journey. Thus rituals work as show time and the only difference is the role of family is replaced by another social network, comprised of classmates, alumni, colleagues and friends. In many cases, details of rituals have faded away and the only thing remained in ritual is the feast. Ironically, thanks to the fact that Chinese has an extremely complicated food culture. The core of ritual and only the core of ritual, identity and feast, is kept in modern Chinese culture. I n m o d e r n C h i n a , t h e r e i s a s a y i n g “ 出 任 C E O, 迎 娶 白 富 美 , 走 向 人 生 巅 峰 “ . T h e v e r y s e c u l a r s a y i n g c o r r e s p o n d s t o t h e t h r e e life journey, which also requires the biggest feast: career achievement, ideal wedding and reaching life peak. However, those moments is about catering to the majority’s value instead of your own. Everyone lives in the nuance relationship of tator. In the scenario of “the ultimate life hall”, everyone wants to have spectator and becoming the spectacle. Launching harvest social attentions and collect resources in your networks.

happiest moments in the greatness about spectacle and specthe feast is a way to

wedding hall

Thus the ultimate ritual in modern contemporary culture is no longer about the ritual itself, no longer about the details and attentions of ritual activities. The ultimate ritual is the pilgrimage to feast, to vanity and becoming the spectacle throughout the life journey. The existance of the hall would satisfy people’s all vanity about feasts and social expectations. Would they start to treat it as a sacred ritual ,or continue the social spectacle of feasting and showing? Perhaps it is the only way to keep rituals up to date.

Although small in size, tw/rl’s impact on zero-energy architecture will be tremendous. From morning to evening, the featured umbrella has many performative functions: to shade from the sun, to ventilate cool air, and to collect solar energy. When opened for business, the movable display cases align for unimpeded movement of the umbrella along the shelf-top tracks. In order to maximize shade, the user rolls the umbrella manually on this track, which inadvertently positions the umbrella’s interwoven surface of solar reflectors and collectors at the optimal angle to the sun. Solar heat is reflected into the spindle of the solar chimney to generate air movement and, simultaneously, is absorbed by photovoltaic tiles for later use. When closed for the day, the display shelves lock in an O-shape for safety, while securing the umbrella in position as well as the contents of the kiosk. At night, the series of lighted kiosks sporadically mark the water’s edge—quietly waiting for a new day.

PLAN CLOSED STATE Scale :1/4”=1’0”

Open for Operation/Closed for Security When closed, the kiosk secures the retail goods on the inside from theft and constricts the umbrella from moving side-toside or upward. When fully opened, the kiosk’s display cases automatically align the track to be continuous. The user can then roll the umbrella unimpeded to any position along the track. On sunny days, the natural inclination would be to direct the umbrella towards the sun throughout the day. Because the six display cabinets are arranged in a radial pattern, vendors have the option of fixing one or two of the cases (see middle row). This type of configuration would be ideal for performances or identifying a unit that may have differ- entiated functions (cashier, storage, information,

The performative umbrella, a key element in this kiosk, plays an important role in the multi-layered sustainability strategy. Operated manually, the umbrella can be rotated by a single person in order to maximize the amount of shading from the sun. Upon doing so, the user inadvertently directs the central axis of the umbrella directly to the sun, increasing the amount of shade below, but also maximizing the top surface’s exposure to the sun. This top surface is designed to do two things: move air through a solar chimney and collect solar energy. The clear ETFE outer layer in the upper half of the umbrella allows sunlight to pass through

The result is a highly interactive system.

Constructability Creatively combining readily available materials with digital programming, this compact project can be constructed in a relatively short amount of time. All methods of construction and assembly have been previously tested and perfected by members for the team with a few minor exceptions such as silicone drainage surface. Building a prototype within the designated budget and timeline is rea- sonable and ample. And customizing the overall form of the kiosk has no bearing on the production of multiple (40+) kiosks because the fabrication process is completely digital (CAM) and the assembly requires no special tools.
