Bracebridge Multi-use Community Centre New Construction, Bracebridge ON MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects (MJMA)
The new centre will include a 1,000-seat arena, a modern public library, a shared community hall, an accessible indoor multi-use field house, a common lobby area and ample on-site parking. The province’s funding is for the library and multi-sport field house, which totals $22 million, whereas the full project costs of $59.7 million also include the arena, lobby, community auditorium, site works and outdoor amenities. The Town of Bracebridge is providing more than $42.8 million toward the estimated cost of the entire Multi-Use Community Centre project.
ROLE: Design Development and Contract Documents
STATUS: Under Construction
“Everyone here in Bracebridge knows that both the local arena and library are old and outdated and the community needs new facilities,”
Norman Miller

5500 No. 3 Road Mixed-Use Building New Construction, Vancouver,Canada Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership(MCM) The prominent southeast corner of the intersection of Lansdowne Road and No. 3 Road could be redeveloped into one of Richmond’s largest 100% rental housing projects in years. A rezoning application by Headwater Living Inc. outlines a proposal to redevelop 5500 No. 3 Road – immediately south of SkyTrain’s Lansdowne Station and Lansdowne Centre shopping mall — into a 154-ft-tall, 15-storey, mixed-use building.

In terms of architectural characteristics, they reflect qualities of space that are of: nature, variety and vitality, sense of occurrence, optimism; and generosity. The building in plan is designed as a soft semi-circular form, concave towards your approach, north facing, which creates and wraps a new half circular garden plaza area in front of the building, of which you pass through on winding paths, from the parking lot, to arrive at the main entrance. The concave building face is edged by a one story lower colonnaded veranda-like space, creating cover and seating areas. The section of the building is lower to the north, where you enter, with the roof hovering a foot above the wall, creating a break in the wall roof connection allowing a narrow-unencumbered view to the sky beyond. The roof then slopes noticeably upwards towards the south and an exterior fern and multi-stemmed birch tree grove courtyard separating the new building from the existing. While semi-circular in plan, the ceiling is supported by large semicircular wood arches, radially positioned along the length of the space, leaping from side to side, with the sloped ceiling balanced on the top centre edge of the arches.

From third points along the length of the arches, secondary straight beams spring outwards in triangular patterns towards the secondary beams in the roof plane, creating a spark-like connection point to the arch. All structural elements are wood, with all steel connections concealed.

BRIEF : This project was conceived from how to organically combine individualized instruction to cultivate students and convert the existing pollution conditions of Newtown Creek into a new advantage to serve this community, and at the same time to gather the community to increase the awareness of protecting the local environment. Based on site analysis, the neighbourhood is occupied by industrial buildings, and the site locates on the edge of a canal that is being polluted. In the meantime, the site context lacks greenery area to increase biodiversity and provide environmental comfort.

Toronto’s Historic Photo Archive New Construction, Toronto, Canada Student project in collaboration with Felix Chan
CONCEPT: The site is in the heart of downtown Toronto, and it is the perfect location for the archive because this is the intersection where old heritage vibes of the city took their last stand against the rapid changes of the city. We see several landmarks that act as beacons of time that represent the past, present, and future of Toronto.
ROLE: Site Analysis Schematic Design Design Development and Contract Documents
STATUS: Concept
Context / Site / Program
BRIEF: The photo archive has an interesting dynamic within itself: on one hand, it preserves important artefacts and represents the idea of permanence. On the other hand, as time moves forwards, the archive expands in mass and represents the idea of change and growth. With it lies a similar problem with many archives is that these important pieces of history don’t see a lot of light. Therefore, our concept takes root upon revealing the “hidden” in both a visual form and an interactive form. We would like to use the archive as the tour guide and allow visitors to “walk” through the timeline of Toronto.

METAPHOR OF A CAMERA: The envision our archive space as a metaphor of the Camera Obscura, a dark enclosed mass devoid of any fenestration apart from several openings such as the viewfinder or pinhole. The dark mass is an appropriate comparison because the archival spaces needs to be protected from sunlight. These aperture houses various programs in the building and acts as anchors.

TO NEFOS New Construction, Greece Competition Project with Felix Chan & Iran Wen To Nefos With the advent of the technophile society that we are part of nowadays, we live more than ever our life in immaterial platforms created by computer algorithms. From Apple Inc.’s iCloud to curated life on social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram, the physical reality of life is blurred by our immaterial existence on a cloud that we named To Nefos. Therefore, To Nefos is a material depiction the immaterial way of life that our technophile society live by, and consequently we imagine, in the context of creating new eating rituals with respect to our zeitgeist, the building of a structure encompassing an orgy where reality and falsehood are to be reflected as versimilitudes, and where our life and the reflection of our life are to be put into contact just like the portrayal of our existence in the cloud, through social media channels. For all these reasons, To Nefos offers a pot-luck dining experience, where each participant is tasked to bring their dish and scatter over a cloud-like structure above ground made of white fabrics, and reachable through circular staircases and ladders. Twenty-four reflective mirrors representing the twenty-four hours of our daily life are also installed to enhance the powerful experience of an orgy through which the social interactions and the food consumption rituals of the guests are magnified infinitely to represent physically the immateriality of the cloud. Because we constantly live in a blur, in between our reality and our curated portrayal, to experience To Nefos is to feast on the contributions of our social network, to see what our peers will bring to the table, and most importantly to interact with each other through the realness as well as the falseness of a technophile way of life.
