Vision of voice /Co-op community sound management/Intelligent hardware+APP

Introduction Sound control is a special proposition. From a certain perspective, whether one could decide on the sound of his living environment is a manifestation of human rights. Sounds disappear the moment it is made and they can not be categorized. Therefore, the judgement of noise is subjective and differs from individual to individual. As designers, we can explore ways to turn sounds into visible visual elements to better manage them. we designed a SmartBand that manages the noise by measuring and monitoring the surrounding sound, combining the measurement with individuals’ physiological parameters, and then prompting the users to control their volume through vibration. It also senses the mood of the users and displays it using different colors on the screen. Such a design is a service, as well as an agreement among a local social system. For many city dwellers who are troubled by sound noise, this might be a solution worth trying. Human rights should be obtainedat the cost of implementing certain obligations. This is the theoretical backup for this product . My role: Group iteration on color test and interaction model. individual work on UI designs and hardware function designs.

Function 1. Voice Management The SmartBand collects each person's data, and then transmit data to the phone through Bluetooth for analysis. Collected data are: skin electrical indicators, blood pulse, body temperature, sound, micro-vibration frequency. Application in the phone analyzes the emotional fluctuations through the former three elements. If the emotional fluctuations and sound intensity showed a high positive correlation, it will send instructions to the SmartBand, which will remind the noisy people through the vibration. Smile printer / Intelligent hardware+APP

Introduction A smile seems to have a favorable influence upon others and makes one likable and more approachable but we rarely -

smile when we are under huge pressure.

The Smile Printer is designed to use face recognition to verify user’s identity, employ expression recognition as a control way. It aims to make the mechanical action of printing more interesting, meanwhile, allow people to get psychological benefits when smiling in front of the mirror. Worked as the lead UX/UI Designer of this project. Responsible from concept to completion

Challenge I can’t go home until I finish writing 3 reports and printing 138 pages.

A smile seems to have a favorable influence upon others and makes one likable and more approachable.

How often do you smile every day? We often fail to ďŹ nd a chance to smile in busy work and study. Smile becomes a luxurious thing. Active smile enhances conďŹ dence and happiness of the mankind thus essential to everyday life.

Where should you smile mostly ?

company

Busy places make people nervous. Officers handle with a heavy load of things in company and students study hard in school to complete their homework and pass tests. They both need more smile everyday.

How to make you smile? Printers exist in the above two places. We combine printers with smile to help people ďŹ nd an easy way to smile and make the repeated printing movement more interesting.

The user stands in front of the mirror and the sensor would receive the body approaching signals to activate the camera. The system will recognize the identity of the user through the face recognition and retrieve the printed file account. The system then analyzes the person’s face, and only the smile activates the interaction. If there is only one file (usually) waiting to be printed, it can go directly to the confirmation phase. Users need to keep smiling 2s, and then the printer will print the file automatically. If more than one file is waiting to be printed, you need to click the screen (multiple choice), and then make the same confirmation. If the fast print mode is turned on, you do not need to click the screen as multiple copies of documents are printed automatically. Users can use these functions on any of the printers which are authorized to use, that is, their own private or corporate printers, or others who have permission to open the printer.

The user registers and enters the face recognition information through App, and then uploads file and sets printing parameters. The file upload page has a fast printing button. The hardware part will no longer do file selecting after pressing this button, instead it prints all files in sequence directly. The user can see the nearby printer distributions which can be used (have permission to use and are working), using and applying to use others' private printers. It is sufficient to maintain the balance of the account because face recognition is highly secure and does not require authentication thus eliminating the cumbersome payment process. A user with a printer can set permissions to be public or open to a subset of users. The button on the printer's management interface is used to turn off the printer and abort the user's right to use it temporarily.

Taste buds / APP for Food Safety

About Taste buds Taste buds is a QR Code Scanner that helps people learn about the pesticides on fruits or vegetables they bought. App aims to serve consumers who are concerned about food safety. Farm workers input pesticides records in online database inwhich consumers can obtain this record by scanning the QR code sticking on goods. Users could also get to know how to wash these fruits or vegetables properly from the App.

Storyboard

User survey

Do you really trust the vegetables or fruits you eat? Have you ever experienced that moment that in a supermarket, you want to buy some oranges but you have no idea whether they have pesticides remains. You spot some food sticking healthy food or organic food labels but you are confused how they are judged without an explicit data showed-you are not alone that feel so. Taste buds helps shoppers by connecting them with foodproducing areas so that they could gain more information about theirpreferred items.

Lei Li/22 years old That time I met my boyfriends’ family for the first time and I committed to bring a dish. Thinking of what was healthy and organic, searching for what needs to buy…took me almost 3 days.”

UI design To design the mobile app, we first roughed out wireframes and UI flow diagrams. I then redesigned the UI based on the initial concept from my collaborator Xiuping. The specs were updated to fit an iPhone 5s screen.

UI design

Initial Interface The fruits or vegetables images on initial interface vary every day according to users' past scanning record.

UI design Reading Daily push of a brief introduction of fruits or vegetables.

Scanning The concise scanning interface helps users to scan their preferred food conviniently.

Pesticides records Considering the suitability of the font size for different ages, we set up three different font sizes choices and the text spacing has subtle changes in order to expand the scope of users and enhance the user experience.

The core of the design was to improve the air treatment efficiency of air purifiers. We solved the problem by changing the traditional dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) structure to a through-hole DBD structure, which accelerated the reaction speed of the reactor by allowing air to flow through the through-hole. This design made air purifiers suitable for large areas.

Manufacturing process First trial The failure of the first experiment with the electrode broken down had following factors to blame: too small size of electrode; too small area of dielectric barrier film; insufficient specific creepage distance between two electrodes which rendered the reaction not to be DBD but further developing into a breakdown bypassing the dielectric barrier. Meanwhile, the through-hole of the electrode had the same problem, as its curvature radius was even smaller. Without sufficient specific creepage distance, a breakdown was easier to occur to the through-hole than on the edge. Therefore, if the installed dielectric barrier had a through-hole, it would have been subjected to breakdown earlier than the edge. Consequently, the area of the dielectric shall be enlarged so as to surpass the area of the stainless steel electrode and increase the specific creepage distance.

Product innovation The improved electrode for the second trial: successful 20mm

120mm*120mm

Each electrode was designed to be a 100mm diameter circle. There were also two through-holes, each being a circle with 30mm diameter and 3.5mm thickness. The dielectric barrier was designed to be a 120mm*120mm square whose through-hole is a circle with 20mm diameter and 1mm thickness. All such designs could increase the specific creepage distance and prevent the breakdown between the two electrodes, ensuring that the discharge would be DBD discharge.

Experimental diagram

The circuit was connected and 1.5mm space was maintained between the two electrodes to carry out the experiment. When the voltage increased to 11000V, light purple filamentary discharge appeared between two electrodes, which was the indication of the occurrence of DBD. When the voltage was increased to 15000V, obvious discharge appeared between the two electrodes, as is shown in Fig. 3-5. Therefore, the basic experimental conditions could be satisfied.

Further optimized design of the electrode was carried out (increasing the area of the through-hole) Analysis showed that, when the area of the through-hole increased properly, not only was the DBD process maintained, but the area of the reactor’s through-hole also increased, which could accelerate the reaction speed of the reactor. Therefore, the experiment selected the third design of the electrode.
