Studio Work: The Architectonics of Music/ Instructor: Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia Partnered with Jingjing Wu, Individually Revised/ Role: Concept 60%, Modeling 70%, Drawings in Portfolio 80% Spring 2020/ Florenc, Prague, Czech Republic Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KZ82iGjIZY

Inspired by music—Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt and Laterna Magica by Kaija Saariaho, we try to find the relationship between three basic music elements — triad, melody and bar line based on sheet music. We translate 'triad' and 'melody' into two curvy geometries — white arch-shaped surfaces and black thick-and-solid walls. And we combine two representations of bar line — multiple mirrors and the red filter into red translucent glass. For their role in architecture, we define them according to their roles in music. Triad accompanys the music like a guardian angel; melody is the basic foundation of music; and bar line divides the music into several bars. So we define the 'triad' part as connecting, ‘melody’ part as supporting, 'bar line' part as dividing. The red mirrors reflect and refract between white 'triad' and black 'melody', creating unexpected reflections and refractions between three dramatic colors.

Translation from Sheet Music SPIEGEL IM SPIEGEL -- MIRROR IN THE MIRROR

ARVO PÄRT STYLE: an Estonian composer of classical and religious music; a minimalist style with self-invented compositional technique - tintinnabuli WORKS: Fratres, Spiegel im Spiegel, and Für Alina STATUS: the most performed living composer in the world since 2011

KAIJA SAARIAHO STYLE: an Finnish composer from strict serialism towards spectralism and polyphonic textures; some work aesthetically recalling minimalism

LATERNA MAGICA

WORKS: L’Amour de loin, Graal théâtre, Verblendungen, Orion, Petals STATUS: the greatest living composer in a 2019 composers’ poll by BBC Music Magazine

Ingmar Bergman; Cries and Whispers; Transitions go through red color

TRIAD: a set of three notes that can be stacked vertically in thirds MELODY: a linear sequence of notes the listener hears as a single entity, the foreground to the backing elements and a combination of pitch and rhythm BAR LINE: a vertical line used in a musical score to make a division between bars

For melody, which is the predominet component in sheet music, it will become the basic supporting structure — thick-and-solid black supporting walls. For bar line, which divides sheet music into bars, it will become the dividing element — translucent red glass.

For triad, which accompnies the melody like an accompany angel in sheet music, it will become the connecting elements — the entrances, windows, and balconies to connect the interior spaces of different functions or connect interior and exterior spaces.

Studio Work: Qingcheng Mountain Railway Station Design Instructor: Qing Lin/ Individual Work Autumn 2017/ Qingcheng Mountain, Chengdu, Sichuan, China

The station is located in Qingcheng Mountain, a Taoist cultural resort. The context was severed by the railway and highway into high-density districts and farmlands. With the continuous and rapid expansion of the urban districts, the farmland has also gradually shown an urbanization trend. However, the existence of the railway greatly restricts development of both sides and generates isolation between two sides. Although the railway station exists as the cause of the segregation, in my design it should shoulder the responsibility of unifying the urban fabric in the contrary. So I use the local form of arch and slope roof, which are typical characters of Taoism architecture and represent different meaning of connecting and predominating to accommodate diversified functions, and to create a common dialogue for both sides. The repeated and varied rhythm will bring both the visitors and the locals unforgettable experience.

The Urbanization Progress The context of the city has been changing all the years. The urban context has been more and more condense and the rural context has been gradually taken over to build modern buildings. With the expansion, the railway and highway exist together as a boundary that inhibits the connection between two parts.

The Willing of Crossing over With the rapid urbanization progress, local people's willing of crossing over has been stronger. A connection should be built to create a dialogue and stimulus the development of both sides in a unexpected way.

Studio: New Programs for the 21st Century/ Instructor: Bernard Tschumi Partnered with Siying Chen/ Role: Concept 50%, Modeling 50%, Drawings in Portfolio 70% Fall 2019/ Manhattan, New York, NY, United states

We’re investigating the social typology in a typical Manhattan block. This project is a shopping center for online shopping, which is a new typology to encourage social activity through the metaphor of seven deadly sins while keeping the convenience in consumerism to improve customers’ shopping experience. There are two main factors in the project, fitting and social. Fitting space is designed differently according to people’s different status and requirements when trying different products. The social area is designed as a metaphor of seven deadly sins to generate seven social types (one to one, one to group, group to more, group by chance, gather together, group exchange and immersed meeting), and seven social space accordingly (which are intimate space, hierarchy space, growing space, irrational space, static space, exchangeable space and cyclic space). The social space and fitting space, together create a shopping center for online shopping, combing consumerism with social activities.

Development of Shopping Center and New Type There are two existing shopping mode. Traditional shopping center and online shopping. Derived from forum, which is mainly for trading and other social activities, shopping mode evolved from open market place, to enclosed shopping center, to online retailer and physical pop up store for online shopping website. Social activity in shopping is gradually being overlooked with the increase of convenience. So we’d like to propose a new typology to encourage social activity while keeping the convenience in consumerism to improve customers’ shopping experience. Fitting Type

The social area is designed as a metaphor of seven deadly sins to generate seven social types and seven social space accordingly.

18

GLUTTONY

Restaurant + Gym The restaurant is composed with stepped platforms for buffet. Customers are forced to walk along the path to get the food and tables while seeing people working out in the central space.

No one can avoid working out if they want to eat.

There is an elevator in the middle, providing vertical circulation in the gym. Stairs and ramps are used to connect each rooms in the restaurant, forcing customers to create more movement in the project.

People who are peeking others are being peeked.

There is a clear but hidden vertical circulation between each theater for the performers. The movement in the swimming pool is free and people can flexibly choose their own routes like the experience in promenade theater.

Lazy people cannot truly appreciate art

There are mainly four vertical circulations consists of elevators and stairs, connecting to the four platforms. Horizontal movement for people is relatively limited in the project. The conveyors are only for artworks.

Wrath: Calm down before going to play.

Movement is not only enabled by stairs and elevators located at the corners. Corresponding to the program, sliders and climbing installation are combined with vertical circulation to provide an alternative way for the users in one part.

Rooms can have hierarchy but people should not.

There is an elevator located in the middle of the project, connecting the three levels of conference room, private office and public office. Stairs are used to connect the three floors from the outdoor space.

Living creatures are born with envy and greed.

Stairs are located in the middle of the prison, providing a clear and direct view of the movement. On the contrast, the pet nursery is composed by stairs which creates spherical figuration in the space. The stairs providing movement for human outside the sphere and playing space for pets inside the sphere.

The project consists of blocks as rooms inside of the larger cube. Those blocks are connected by movement such as stairs, ramps, and are hanged from the roof.

LUST

Theater + Swimming Pool

Similar to promenade theater, audience swim around in the swimming pool at their own path and peep into different thearatically designed rooms for the show.

Challenging the scale of architecture elements, window, in the project, the perceptional connection between rooms is through the holes like peeping.

SLOTH

Gallery + Lounge

Inversing the traditional gallery in which exhibition is static and visitors are walking around, the conveyers provide a new possibility of moving exhibition for the people in the lounge.

Reconsidering one of the most important architecture elements floors, the project investigates the idea of floors as only platforms without horizontal circulation from one to another.

WRATH

School + Amusement Park

The project is divided into two space, one for study and one for play. Kids from one side can see others from the other side of the room, but the space is not connected except at the top.

The void is punched into the cube and the space is split into two. The intervention in the middle separate the project spatially but the view on both sides is connected.

PRIDE

Office + Conference

Public and private program have contrast with space. Conference room is located in the middle of first floor, surrounded by glass walls. Office with separated walls are on the second floor. The third floor is the open office space.

Rooms are arranged in three levels to establish the hierarchy for space. With slopped angle exterior walls and windows, views are blocked from the bottom but open at the top, with the space getting more public from bottom to top.

ENVY+GREED

Pet Nurrsery + Prison

The pet nursery, as an intervention at the prison, breaks the original equality and balance in the space. And the flowing and free space of the pets also contrasts with the rigid space of prisoners.

19

The space is equally divided into rooms at the beginning. The equality and balance between the rooms are broke when the order is disturbed by the increasing wall which grows into another program finally.

GLUTTONY For gluttony, restaurant and gym are related to sports and digestion in medicine. But on the contrast, it is used as an experiment for students in School of Engineering and Applied Studies for the artificial intelligence technology, creating the mechanics and pipes on the roof which combines with the structure.

LUST

PRIDE

For lust, swimming pool and theater are related to sports and art. But on the contrast, it is used for students in Columbia Law School as a new way to make their practice and court rehearsal. The holes provide light and also views for the public.

For Pride, the program contrasts the space. And the client contrasts the program by taking the social network students which is trying to break the hierarchy among people.

SLOTH For Sloth, the gallery is related to art. However, the project is a simulation space for students in Business School to practice their professional skills.

ENVY + GREED

WRATH

For Envy and Greed, the cell for prisoner and the crate for pets are designed according to their different scales. The program is related to law or biology, but it is use as the laboratory for students in College of Physicians and Surgeons to study human and nonhuman.

Kids’ center is related to education, but the project is used for journalism school as space to publish and practice work. The scales between adults and kids help reshape space.

20

Four Programs More specificly, the social area mainly serves as the mirror space, providing customers with the space for seven different social activities, to share their tastes and make new friends. The seven mirror space is connected to the middle open area with the walkways, which is the stage for customers to express themselves and show off their style. And the fitting space where customers can order, get and try the products they saw online. Those products are stored in the storage designed according to the different dimension, shape and materiality.

Then going to the lust social area. It is designed as the intimate space for one to one social type, such as gossiping. There are rooms with the same dimensions overlaying with one another. The size of the modular is limited to fit in only two people. Those rooms are made of glass, including the roof and floor, people inside the room are exposed in a way. But the overlayed arrangement of the rooms creates a certain coverage and privacy for the space

First start with the fitting space for makeup and eyewear, the storage is deisgned as desks for customers to try on the product.

Movements

The second social area is pride, which is the hierarchy space. The social type is one to group meeting for presenting. The area of the three layers of platforms increase when it goes down, creating the hierarchy in space. The platform at the top is the stage for presenting, sharing the style and taste with the large group of people.

There are two main movements for the story in the project. Unlike most buildings in Manhattan block that people access from the two ends, the main entrance is in the middle encouraging more people to the open social area, following the outdoor walkway to the seven mirror space, which is the first movement. The other movement is the loop creates by the seven social area corresponding to the seven deadly sins, connected by the fitting space, in where there is only ramps to keep customers moving, creating contrast with the platforms in the social area, which encourages customers to stay.

The following fitting space is for bags. The storage is tall to hang or store bags inside.

The third social area is greed. It is the growing space for social activities such as clubbing. Customers will meet more people when they walk into the space as there are three rooms getting larger in the space, allowing larger accommodation following the movement.

The next fitting space is for shoes. The storage is designed as bench, so customers can get the shoes from the storage while sittiing on it and try the shoes. The following social area is wrath which we defined as irrational space. The social type is meeting by chance and the space is used for rocking. There are different route in the space, leading to different rooms with no clear direction. So customers cannot participate which room they will be in and whom they will meet next.

The next fitting is for toys. The storage is designed as thick walls and the toys are hidden in those walls.

And then the fitting space is for clothes. Besides storage there are closed individual fitting room for customers to try the products.

Finally, customers have completed a loop and they can choose either go out or start an new loop again.

The next fitting space is actually a checkout space, which is the last step.

The last social area is gluttony which we defined as cyclic space, proposing the immersed meeting in the social type. It is a two story bathing space, with two separated circulation, one through the water and create a small loop, the other one avoid water, leading to the outside and start a new round again.

The next fitting room is for accessories. The storage is either hanged from the top for hat or sit on the ground for jewries or gloves.

The next social area is Envy. It is the exchangeable space, proposing a social type, meeting by shift. This are is also for dining. The space is divided in to two and connected by the bridge. Customers on the two sides can see each other, but if they want to meet each other or want to get snakes from other dining tables, they need to shift to the other side.

The next social area is sloth, which is designed as the static space for group to more meeting. The ramps are connected to the center platforms from different directions, gathering people together in the middle. Also there are stairs following the shape of the sphere, providing custoimers a space to sit or lay down and have a rest.

and

Activities

Studio Work: Urban Palimpsests/ Instructor: Karla Rothstein Partnered with Guangwei Ren/ Role: Concept 50%, Modeling 90%, Drawings in Portfolio 40% Summer 2019/ Manhattan, New York, NY, United States

To build a dialogue between the history of site and current diverse programming, this proposal combines the system of vertical farming, disposition of the dead, community activities and experiential space, which also constructs a new relationship between life and death in urban context. Vertical farming is a direct response to the grand farm history that can also be beneficial to the urban environment. The disposition of the dead is composting, with a vertical conveying system inspired from the apartment proposal in history, about 10,000 people died in Manhattan each year can be recycled to the life of plants, give another conceptual layer to the vertical farming. The immigration history with a wide spectrum of ethnicity is translated into the species of planting. With an extreme thin thickness of this infrastructure, the sports fields and other areas of community activity are preserved as much as possible. It passes through the whole site with variations, reflecting the complexity of site condition and enhancing the strong concept in urban space.

25

History and Activities

The title of our project is Synchrony and Diachrony. The temporal relationship is expressed through the combination of the history on this site and the diversity of current programming and community activities. And this concept is also conveyed by the multi-dimensional dialogue between life and death. At first, we analyzed our site from two perspectives: the periodic activities currently happening on the site and the historical events. To summarize the history, this park experienced through four stages of change. First one is the farmland owned by the first immigrants from Europe. Second is the AfricanAmerican burial ground. Third one is the affordable apartment to solve the problem of overpopulation. At last it became a park of playgrounds, and gradually some programs on the park have been changed by the communities. So currently a high diversity of community activities is happening on the site.

26

Datascape of History

Datascape of Activities

Concept Based on the Datascape The concept is transforming the cemetery into vertical farmland and designating each vessel to a different fruits, flowers or vegetables grown in NYC to construct a coloful scene. Besides, we will take the most of the activities happening on the site and also try to introduce some new activities which is in the balloons to to make up for the time blanks of the site. The datascape of history shows the changes in the population composition of different races and the datascape of activities shows the changes of temporal population in four segments of this park.

The Fruits, FLowers and Vegetables in New York City This palette shows most of the fruits, flowers and vegetables grown in New York City. The colorful scene is a translation of the complicated immigration history of the site. And besides, the palette provides the dead people with diverse choices to represent the lives of themselves. Thus, the random colorful farmland will create a vivid and dynamic vertical cemetery.

The dead body is transported through the elevator to each floor, and the conveyor horizontally moves the vessel to the designated position. The process of composting happens in the vessel for one month. After the dead body becomes soil, it will be used for the plants. There is a recombination process of the vessel from the shape rectangular to rhombus, so it can fit into the niche of the plants. And there is also the system of irrigation and mechanical harvesting of the farmland. Besides, the greenhouse will occupy some space for different kinds of plants. Other programs related more with the livings are also contained: the restaurant and the food processing below the ground, the flower shop, and the ceremonial space. The experiential circulation is spiraling up the whole system, from the ground.

Plan

The long sectional perspective shows the changes of the vertical farming cemetery from the night in snowy winter to the daytime in sunny summer. There will be a much more coloful scene in summer with more flowers, fruits and vegetables than winter. And accordingly, people's activities will be more diverse in summer. These dynamic changes throughout the four seasons make people feel their lost friends, lovers, or families are still with them. The plan shows in details where the elevators are located and the function arrangements. The cemetery can create diverse activities for people along the site. 0

Urban Strategy

The form of this infrastructure mainly depends the programs on site, first is the parks and sport fields we critically preserve, our proposal is trying to responds to them build some connection, like audience area for the sports fields, sports clubs for basketball fields, and parking space for bike polo. The second one s new programs introduced into the park according to the site analysis. Like open galleries, performance center, classrooms and activity center. As they are in accordance with the urban context, we wish they can serve to link both sides. And the surface of the greenland is mainly facing to the south direction in order to receive more sunlight.

HK

Competition Work: Silver Prize of 2017 National Undergraduate Architectural Design Competition Instructor: Qing Lin / Individual Work Summer 2017/ Sham Shui Po, Hongkong, China

This project aims to revive the negative space in the narrow gaps of high-density residential buildings in Sham Shui Po. The mechanism is flexible with three foldable elements, thus can be transformed to fit in gaps of different width and for different functions. The original dark and dim gap space will be enlightened with the installation of the devices. Besides, people could utilize app to control the mechanism. People could choose to call for plugging in a new devise, voting for the plugging in of a devise based on their needs, or search for the devices of a particular function they need. The mechanism will facilitate all the people in the district to build the sense of belonging and also community connection.

Step One: The Negative Gap

The negative gap space is a regular existence in Sham Shui Po.

Step Two: The Activator

The device acting as an activator is introduced into the gap.

Step Three: The Connector

The elevator connects devices to the ground and the devices connect two buildings.

Section Details The intention of the device is that it can adapt to different gap widths with its flexibility. In order to achieve this flexibility to the maximum, the device consists of three levels of telescopic systems — translucent, transparent enclosure and floor-supporting system. Besides, the device can be stretched horizontally and can also rotated, which makes it extremely adaptable for all kinds of requirements. Especially the rotation make it more variable and be able to link two floors.

6. Experiencing and Remark

From the Old building to the device People can enjoy the modern convenience with the installation of the devices, and they could still reserve perfectly the memory of living in the old buildings of Sham Shui Po.

From the device to the Old building The contrast between the old buildings and the plug-in devices is quite intriguing and makes people want to experience the totally different atmosphere and life offered by the modern devices.

06 OTHER WORK URBAN DESIGN - PENETRATING THE CITY Informal Linear Parks

the

Walls Surrounding Jiuli Campus

Chengdu was born in the process of China's blind rapid development. Due to the uncertainty generated by rapid development, a huge number of physical walls were created in the city. Nowadays, even if the demolition of the wall is constantly raised and realized by the government, the psychological walls brought by the physical walls will still exist forever.

In the design, we uses several kinds of differentiated and informal fabrics, which are covered under the none-physical walls, to unfold towards it and create a psychological way of "boundary-breaking". And hopefully, this series of informal programs can be applied to other cities in all over the world to confront similar dilemma.

THEATER DESIGN - DRAMATIC DRAMA The design hopes to provide people with a dramatic experience. The theater will become an ideal place for people to escape from the boring daily life. To realize the vision, I used ellipsoids to intersect with the old triangle to create vivid space. The diversified intersections make the theater open to the public and be an attractive icon in the community.

HIGH-RISE BUIDLING DESIGN - FUSION The design hopes to create a cyberpunk atmosphere in the district famous for bars and retraurants. The building is a innovative fusion of dynamic public space and efficient office space. Multiple terraces and roof gardens are designed to improve and the quility of space and building's ecological system.

Design components that situate this house into the 35 acre landscape that includes gardens, orchards, swimming areas, stone stairs, terraces and gabion walls made from bluestone and hand-quarried whitestone sourced, less than five miles away. The robust exterior: metal standing seam roofing; graphite-stained sapele verticals; over-scaled plywood shingles; expanses of southeast facing glazing; and a base of grey galvalum and gabion pilings give this house a material presence to match the environmental responsibility of the highly insulated geothermal construction. Other amenities include an astroturf screened porch, with an expansive artisan mural, a steel frame/jalousie glass greenhouse adjacent to the kitchen and deep overhangs to block out the hot summer sun while allowing winter sun deep into the rooms.

2,000 sf - Completion Role: 3D Model, Diagrams, Renderings, Drawings (CD) Software: Rhino, Grasshopper, V-Ray, Vectorworks, Photoshop, Illustrator

This super-insulated, hydronic, geo-thermal pool house, originally designed as a concrete structure with a roof of glulam diagrid and structurally insulated panel, has been re-imagined and built using industrial construction materials. Materials used include a glazed bifold aircraft hanger door, structurally insulated panels over steel joists and decking with corrugated galvanealed siding supported with triple-galvanized steel stud construction. This industrial chassis is then brought to life with limited finish materials of rough-cut 18”x30” bluestone flooring, marine-grade teak wall panels, raw porcelain 1” hexagonal tiled walls with the ceiling and all exposed steel work finished with baby-blue epoxy paint. Facing south, the bifold door brings warm winter sunlight deep into the space while in warmer months the door opens to provide a canopy and extend the space into the landscape. Additional light is provided with large ellipse skylights over the pool and spa. Programmatically, the pool is served by a reticulated exchange of entrance, east terrace, changing room, bench seating, spa, steel wood-burning grill, double interior showers, and an exterior gathering/media space looking out onto the field that slopes into an aerated swimming pond on the property.
