Na ovom umjetničkom putovanju grafičkim stazama vraćamo se i portretu velikog donatora i dobrotvora Ante Topića Mimare (1898. - 1987.), koji je Zlatko Jakuš izradio još davnih osamdesetih godina, a koji danas zanimljivom podudarnošću - izlaže na izložbi svojih radova u umjetničkom muzeju koji nosi donatorovo ime. Iz impostacije samoga lika i prodornog donatorova pogleda na tom portretu mogu se razaznati Mimarine psihološke i karakterne odlike kojima je za života očaravao svoju okolinu: inteligencija, emotivnost, energičnost. Pridodamo li tome vrhunsku naobrazbu, tečno poznavanje pet svjetskih jezika i rafinirani životni stil, ne čudi nas što je uspio izgraditi svoju veličanstvenu zbirku umjetnina koju je 1973. godine darovao hrvatskom narodu. Mimarina je darovnica impresivna po bogatstvu i raznolikosti. Obuhvaća slike i crteže starih majstora različitih škola; skulpturu u drvu, kamenu, bronci, alabasteru od antičkog doba do 20. stoljeća; bogatu zbirku predmeta primijenjene umjetnosti u bronci, srebru, bjelokosti, staklu, porculanu koji, uz fine komade antiknog namještaja, pripadaju različitim europskim sredinama i umjetničkim stilovima. Od posebne je važnosti zbirka stakla čiji se razvitak može pratiti od vremena starog Egipta do 19. stoljeća, kao i vrijedna zbirka orijentalnih sagova, podrijetlom s različitih bliskoistočnih lokaliteta, uz primjerke europskog tekstila i tapiserija. Vrlo je važna i zbirka kineske i drugih dalekoistočnih umjetnosti, a koja sadrži predmete od bronce, porculana, laka i drugih materijala.
Ante Topić Mimara On this artistic journey along graphic pathways we also revert to the portrait of the great donor and benefactor Ante Topić Mimara (1898 - 1987), made by Zlatko Jakuš as early as long-past eighties and now displayed by - a curious coincidence - at the exhibition of his works in the museum of arts that bears the donor’s name. From the very posture of his figure and a penetrating donor’s look that extends from the portrait itself one can easily recognize Mimara’s psychological and character distinctions by which he used to charm his milieu: inteligence, emotionality, energy quality. If we add to that his top education, a fluent knowledge of five world languages and his highly sophisticated life style, no wonder he had managed to set up his magnificent collection of treasures of art that he donated to Croatian people in 1973. Mimara’s donation is impressive both by its richness and diversity. It comprises paintings and drawings of ancient masters from different schools; sculpture in wood, stone, bronze and alabastar from antiquity to the 20th century; a rich collection of objects of applied arts made of bronze, silver, ivory, glass and porcelain that, together with exquisite antique pieces of furniture, belong to different European environments and artistic styles. Especially important is a collection of glass whose development may be traced from ancient Egyptian times to the 19th century, as well as a valuable collection of oriental carpets originating from different Mid-East localities, including specimens and patterns of European textiles and tapestries. The collection of the Chinese and other Far-East arts that comprises objects of bronze, porcelain, lacquer and other materials is of a great importance too.

Predgovor Slikar Zlatko Jakuš jedinstvena je pojava u novijoj hrvatskoj umjetnosti. Zahvaljujući svom međunarodnom plasmanu u specifičnom segmentu grafičkog rješenja poštanskih maraka i novčanica, stekao je ugled koji na ovom specifičnom području prije njega nije uživao nijedan hrvatski slikar. Možda bi u prilog ovoj činjenici trebalo navesti nimalo zanemariv podatak: Jakuš je autor više od dvije stotine (!) prihvaćenih i ostvarenih projekata za poštanske marke i seriju novčanica, većim dijelom za Skandinaviju, Singapur i neke druge zemlje. Dosadašnju Jakuševu aktivnost predstavlja podeblji filatelistički album s brojnim serijama iznimne grafičke vrijednosti, među kojima je niz primjeraka dobilo visoka međunarodna priznanja i nagrade. Dakako, ni narudžbe, ni priznanja, ni nagrade ne moraju biti bezuvjetna garancija umjetničke vrijednosti bilo kojeg i bilo čijeg djela, ali kad je u pitanju Jakuš, inozemac u sredini u kojoj djeluje i stvara, onda je visoka umjetnička razina conditio sine qua non. Što je Jakuša izdvojilo i tako visoko plasiralo u međunarodnim razmjerima? Jer, prisjetimo se, ni artizam, ni najviše grafičko umijeće nisu jedine propozicije ove sasvim specifične grafičke discipline: poštanske marke i novčanice nisu isključivo umjetnost, kao što nisu samo ni zanatska perfekcija. Marka i novčanica dijele s estetikom sasvim određenu društvenu sudbinu, sredstvo su najmasovnije »komunikacije«, što znači da moraju udovoljavati određenoj zakonitosti »estetičke disperzije«, a kao takve zrcalni su odraz ekonomske (i političke) zrelosti, likovne kulture, ukratko, marka i novčanica prozori su umjetnosti i politike pojedinih naroda u svijet. Sve te komponente, dakle, ukazuju na složenost jednog sasvim zasebnog segmenta grafičkog umijeća u kojem se moraju do savršenstva »napasati« raznorodne sastojnice. Bilo bi, međutim, pogrešno iz ovoga zaključiti da je Jakuš rutiner i neprikosnoven perfekcionist na jednom od područja primijenjene umjetnosti, da je njegova darovitost jednostrana. Jakuš je, na to treba jasno ukazati, kompletna stvaralačka ličnost naglašenoga grafičkog usmjerenja. Ovu tvrdnju potvrđuje i proširuje slikarevo grafičko stvaralaštvo izvan užeg kruga »namjenske grafike«. Razjasnit ću: izvan svog stockholmskog ateljea na pošti Jakuš paralelno djeluje kao grafičar snažne vokacije i sve se izrazitije izdvaja u svojoj generaciji natprosječnom senzibilnošću i jasno profiliranom osobnošću. Dovoljno je podsjetiti na neke novije cikluse među kojima onaj s motivima faune zauzima zasebno mjesto. Međutim, između dvije različite intencije u Jakuševoj grafici, ja ni u kom slučaju ne bih između njih stavljao znak diobe i smatrao ih nespojivim segmentima različitih predznaka i vrijednosti. Foreword Painter Zlatko Jakuš is a unique figure in contemporary Croatian art: his international success in a specific area of graphic design, that of stamp and money design, has earned him recognition and fame never enjoyed by any Croatian painter in this field. The astounding fact is that Jakuš is the author of over two hundred (!) designs for stamps and a banknote series, mainly for Scandinavia, Singapore and several other countries. His work constitutes a huge stamp collection with numerous series of outstanding quality, many of which have won high international awards. Obviously, commissions and awards are not necessarily guarantees of artistic value, but in the case of Jakuš, who lives and works abroad, the highest artistic level is the sine qua non. What is the secret of Jakuš’s international success? Neither artistic talent nor the highest graphic skill are the sole prerequisites for this very specific field of graphic design; stamps and banknotes are not pure art, nor can they be limited to mere technical perfection. Both stamps and money share social fate as a means of the broadest mass communication which must therefore satisfy the laws of »Aesthetic dispersion«. They mirror the economic and political maturity and artistic culture of a country; in short, they present the art and politics of a nation to the world. Needless to say, this very distinct area of graphic design is highly complex and demands a perfect blend of various elements. This, however, by no means implies that Jakuš has focused his talent on attaining routine and perfection in a single field of applied art. On the contrary, he is a complete creative artist of a strong graphic orientation, as demonstrated by his work outside the »Applied« field. In addition to his work at Stockholms Post Office Studio, Jakuš has produced a very powerful oeuvre, outstanding in its marked sensitivity and pronounced individuality. Particularly noteworthy among his more recent works is the cycle with the fauna motifs. Still, the two diferent segments of Jakuš’s work should not be considered as separate and mutually incompatible. Josip Depolo

Dopusti mi samo nekoliko, s pravom ponosnih riječi prije nego što zajedno krenemo na putovanje kroz očaravajući i ponešto tajanstven svijet maraka. Upravo držiš u ruci jedinstveni svezak, knjigu koja istodobno pokriva i razotkriva cijeli moj graverski život. Da ga lakše »progutaš«, u njoj ćeš pronaći dvije originalne novčanice i dvanaest originalnih maraka kao ekskluzivni dodatak svakom primjerku. Marke su »umjetnost u malom« koja zanima većinu ljudi. Moći zalijepiti marke na pisma na raznolik i osoban način vjerojatno je ono što prosječan pisac pisama ponajviše cijeni. Prosječnom kolekcionaru maraka najvažniji su pak izbor motiva, umjetnička i tehnička kvaliteta, kao i tisak. Na ovome putovanju želim ti pokazati koliko su stvarno fantastične i Švedska i Hrvatska, osobito ako te marke zanimaju u tom smislu. Marke koje ilustriraju to moje graversko putovanje prikazuju, dakako, samo djelić, i to moj djelić, svekolikoga bogatstva koje bi nam inače mogle dočarati sve švedske i hrvatske marke zajedno, predstavljajući nam odnosnu povijest, gospodarstvo, zemljopis i kulturu. Knjiga obuhvaća i privatni opus koji je posvećen mojoj nedavno preminuloj majci Zlati i vrlo živahnoj kćeri Mariji. Dragi čitatelju Dear reader Allow me just a few righteously proud words before we together start this journey through the fascinating and somewhat misterious world of stamps. Right now you are holding a unique volume in your hand, a book that both covers and uncovers my life as an engraver. To »swallow« it more easily, you will find two original banknotes and twelve original stamps exclusively enclosed in it. Stamps are »art in miniature« that most people are interested in. The possibility to stamp letters in a varied and personal way is perhaps what the ordinary letter-writer appreciates most. For an average stamp collector choice of motif, the artistic and tehnical quality, and the print itself are the most important issues. On this journey I would like to show you how fantastic Sweden and Croatia really are, especially if you are interested in looking at stamps through that prism. The stamps that illustrate my life of an engraver will present to us only a fraction - my fraction - of the immense richness that all Swedish and Croatian stamps could jointly put in front of our eyes, thus introducing us to their nations’ history, economy, geography and culture. The book also covers a private opus dedicated to my recently deceased mother Zlata and my very lively daughter Marija. Hoping that you will find the book rewarding and that it will further stimulate your interst in stamps and supply you with educational and enjoyable »surfing through reading«, I invite you to join me. Mitska Valhala za poduzetnike Više od polovine kopnene površine Švedske pokriveno je šumom, što je čini najvećim dobavljačem drvne celuloze, papira i građevnoga drva u zapadnoj Europi. Šumarstvo je, zajedno s najvećim europskim rezervama željezne rudače, dalo Švedskoj poticajnu razvojnu injekciju u trenutku kada je, kasno u prošlome stoljeću, i sama konačno bila zahvaćena industrijskom revolucijom. Željezna rudača i čelik osigurali su temelje razvoju strojarstva i strojne industrije koja je Švedskoj služila tako dobro. Ipak, najzaslužniji za sadašnje bogatstvo te zemlje bili su poduzetnici, uglavnom inženjeri, strojari. Od deset najvećih švedskih kompanija, pet su inženjerska poduzeća, a druga tri konglomerati s velikim inženjerskim podružnicama. Druga je odlika švedske strojne industrije to što se koristi mnogim kooperantima. Međutim, najveća je kompanija u Skandinaviji ipak proizvođač automobila Volvo. Jedan automobil na tri Šveđanina najbolje govori o dobrom zdravlju domaćega tržišta za Saab i Volvo. Ipak, riječima brojki, domaće je tržište premaleno da bi samo davalo potporu tako visokokonkurentnom proizvodu kao što je automobil. Prvi automobil proizveden u Švedskoj bio je četverosjed Scania-Vabis, s kotačima na drvenu žbicu i bez kočnica. Kako se to možda i moglo očekivati, prva je pokusna vožnja 1897. naglo završila zalijetanjem u vjetrenjaču. Saab i Volvo dobro su poznati proizvođači sigurnih i pažljivo sastavljanih automobila. Ubrajaju se i među vodeće svjetske proizvođače teških kamiona jer izvoze 90 posto proizvodnje. Porastom industrijalizacije zemalja te razvojem i poboljšavanjem cestovnih mreža Trećega svijeta rast će i potražnja za cestovnim transportnim vozilima. Grupacija Saab-Scania proizvodi i zrakoplove - od Saabovih mlažnjaka koji su glavni oslonac švedskih zračnih snaga do onih za civilno zrakoplovstvo. Prema nekim izračunima, Švedska je najrobotiziranija zemlja na svijetu prema broju zaposlenika u industriji, što je podatak koji dovoljno govori i o načinu na koji se industrija razvija i o inventivnosti švedskih poduzetnika.

Valhalla for enterpreneurs Well over one half of the land surface of Sweden is covered by forest, which makes it the strongest pulp, paper and timber supplier in Western Europe. Forestry, and Europe’s largest iron ore reserves, provided Sweden with a good shot at prosperity when industrial revolution finally arrived there late in the 19th century. Iron ore and steel provided the foundation for mechanical industry that has served Sweden so well. However, it was the industrialists, and chiefly the engineers, who built the country’s present wealth. Of Sweden’s ten largest companies, five are engineering enterprises and another three are conglomerates with major engineering subsidiaries. Another characteristic of Swedish engineering industry is that it uses a large number of subcontractors. The largest company in Scandinavia is, however, an automobile manufacturer, Volvo. There is one car for every three Swedes, which clearly indicates that the domestic market for Saab and Volvo is a healthy one. Nevertheless, the domestic market is still too small to support alone such a higly competitive product as the car. The first car produced in Sweden was a ScaniaVabis four-seater, with wooden spoke wheels and no brakes. Perhaps predictibly, the first trial run in 1897 ended abruptly against the side of a windmill. Saab and Volvo are well known as makers of safe, carefully assembled cars. They are also among world leaders manufacturers of heavy trucks, and export about 90% of their production. As more and more countries industrialize and as road networks of the Third World expand and improve, the demand for road transport vehicles wil continue to grow. The Saab-Scania group also produces aircraft, from Saabproduced jets that provide the mainstay of Sweden’s air force, to planes for civil aviation. By some counts, Sweden is the most robotized country in the world in proportion to the workforce employed by its industry. This indicates both the way in which the industry has developed and the inventiveness of Swedish engineers.

Godine 1483. tiskana je prva švedska knjiga, Dialogus Creaturarum, Johana Snella koji je u tu svrhu bio pozvan u Švedsku iz Lübecka. Knjiga je tiskana na latinskom jeziku i ilustrirana s više od stotinu drvoreza, od kojih se jedan pojavljuje na jednoj od maraka. Biblija Karla XII. tiskana je u Stockholmu 1793. kao rezultat Biblije naručene 1691. godine. Dijelovi iluminacija na naslovnoj stranici prikazani su na marci. Zbirka brevijara potječe iz 60-ih godina 18. stoljeća. Te su knjižice, inače namijenjene čitanju među masama, često bile maloga formata i tiskane u jednoj boji. Prva i posljednja marka ilustriraju razvoj od stare metode do suvremene laserske fotokompozicije. Nova metoda može proizvesti tekst brzinom od 35.000 simbola u minuti.
Umijeće tiskanja u Švedskoj The art of printing in Sweden In 1483 the first Swedish book was printed. It was Dialogus creaturarum by Johan Snell who had been called to Sweden from Lübeck. The volume is in Latin and is illustrated with more then one hundred woodcuts, one of which is featured on one of the stamps. The Carolus XII Bible, printed in Stockholm in 1793, was the result of a commission in 1691. Parts of the illumination on the title page are shown on the stamp. The collection of breviaries originates is from 1760s. These small books, meant to be read by masses, were often in a small format and printed in one colour. The first and last stamp illustrate the evolution from the old method with loose lead types to modern laser photo composition. The new printing method can produce 35,000 characters per minute.

Najstarija hrvatska glagoljska knjiga je Rimski misal iz 1483.; pretpostavlja se da je tiskana u Veneciji, Modrušu, Kosinju ili Izoli. Osim toga, pretpostavlja se da je tiskara u Kosinju najstarija tiskara na slavenskom jugu. Tamo je vjerojatno 1491. godine tiskan glagoljski brevijar. Među istaknute tiskare 15. stoljeća pripadaju i hrvatski tiskari Dobrić Dobrićević, rođen na Lastovu 1457., koji se već 1481. bavio tiskarskim umijećem u Veneciji, i Blaž Baromić, rodom iz Vrbika na Krku, koji je 1494. godine u Senju tiskao Rimski misal.
Umijeće tiskanja u Hrvatskoj The art of printing in Croatia The oldest Croatian Glagolitic book is a Roman Missal from 1438; presumably printed either in Venice, Modruš, Kosinj or Izola. It is also presumed that the printing house in Kosinj is the oldest one in southern Slavic lands. It was probably there that the Glagolitic breviary was printed in 1481. Two of the Croatian printers belong to the group of prominent printers of the 15th cetury: Dorbica Dobrićević, born on the island of Lastovo in 1457, who engaged in the art of printing in Venice as early as in 1481, and Blaž Baromić, born in Vrbik on the island of Krk, who printed Roman Missal in Senj in 1494.

Oružari u srednjem vijeku ukrašavali su oklope plemenitih vitezova prekrasnim gravurama i rezbarijama, mitološkim scenama, bogovima i polubogovima. Ponekad je metalna površina bila urešena i zakučastim ornamentima. Umjetnost graviranja vrlo je stara. Stoljećima se tehnika bakroreza koristila kao najuobičajenija metoda reproduciranja. Cehovska se bratovština danas smanjila i svela na nekolicinu preostalih obrtnika umjetnika, na najsloženiju vještinu izrade novčanica i maraka. Prvo što graver mora naučiti prije nego što se lati bakrene/čelične ploče jest naoštriti graverski iliti rezbarski alat. Bez toga neće ništa postići. Alat obuhvaća četverobridnu čeličnu glavu pričvršćenu na drveni držač, koji služi kao ručka. Vrh dlijeta za graviranje zabija se u metal urezujući liniju, pri čemu se metalna strugotina nakuplja ispred njega i savija se. Što se dlijeto dublje zabija u metalnu ploču, to je šira urezana brazda. Graver može mijenjati dubinu linije držeći dlijeto pod različitim uglovima. Upravo ta dubina graverskog alata stvara volumen i crnilo. Tako se to radilo 500 godina. Tehnika koja se koristi danas ista je kao i tehnika kojom se koristio Albrecht Dürer u 16. stoljeću. Bakar je bio metal koji se pritom pretežno koristio, no moje su marke uvijek bile ugravirane u debelu čeličnu ploču. Sama gravura ima stvarnu veličinu marke, ali s naličja. Graviranje iziskuje preciznost i usredotočenost; rezbarski se alat pomiče sporo, ali stabilno, bez proklizavanja po metalnoj površini. Iako je slika marke malena, često je potrebno nekoliko tjedana da se gravura dovrši. Ovo izdanje nastoji pokazati moje marke u nešto većem formatu od uobičajenoga, s motivima koji odražavaju područja moga zanimanja, a predstavljaju stvaralački izazov. Gravure su rađene pretežno na čeličnoj ploči.
O graviranju About engraving In the Middle Ages armourers decorated armour of noble knights with beautiful engravings and chasings, mythological scenes, gods an demigods. Sometimes, the metal surface was adorned with intricate ornaments. The art of engraving is old. For many centuries copper-plate was the most common method of reproduction. By now the guild has diminished and there are just a few craftsmen left. The most skilful work with bank notes and stamps. The first thing that a copper & steel-plate engraver has to learn is to sharpen his engraving tools. He will get nowhere without them. The tool-kit includes a four-edged chisel steel head attached to a wooden handle. The tip of the chisel is driven down into the metal and a line is cut, with a metal filling that rolls up in front of the tool. The deeper the tool is driven into the metal plate, the wider the groove. The engraver can vary the depth of the line by holding the chisel at different angles. It is the depth of the engraving tool that later results in volume and blackness. And this is the way it has been for 500 years. The technique used today is the same one used by Albrecht Dürer in the 16th century. Copper has been the predominantly used for this purpose, although my stamps have always been engraved in thick steel plates. The engraving itself corresponds to the actual size of the stamp, but in reverse. Engraving requires precision and concentration; the graving tool moves slowly but steadily without slipping on the metal surface. Although the stamp image is small, it often takes several weeks to complete the engraving. This book shall portray my stamps in a slightly larger format, with motifs that reflect particular areas of my interest and represent artistic challenges. The engravings were mostly made on steel plates.

Mitovi rođeni u tami U tami se rađahu mitovi i legende - taj bogat i neobuzdan svijet Asa ili nordijskih bogova. Bogovi, a među njima Odin, Thor i Frey, bili su privlačivo polubesmrtni i većinom predodređeni na umiranje u Rangnaröku, nordijskom Armagedonu. Na bogove podsjećaju i imena ulica u svim švedskim gradovima. Tada, negdje između 800. i 1060. godine poslije Krista, pristigoše Vikinzi. Švedski su Vikinzi bili trgovci i pljačkaši koji su uglavnom putovali istočno koristeći se riječnim sustavima istočne Europe, sve do znamenitoga Miklagårda, odnosno Istanbula. Sa svojih su pohoda natrag dovodili i roblje.

In the darknes grew the myths In the darkness grew the myths and legends - the rich and flamboyant world of the Aesir or Nordic gods. The gods, among them Odin, Thor and Frey, were engagingly only half-immortal and mostly doomed to die at RagnarĂśk, the Nordic Armageddon. The gods are remembered in street names of any Swedish town. Then, between around 800 and 1060 AD, came the Vikings. Swedish Vikings were both traders and plunderers who travelled mainly eastwars using the river systems of Eastern Europe all the way to the MiklagĂĽrd, the present-day Istanbul. Among the spoils brought back from their raids there were als slaves.

Izumi Švedska industrija ovisi o novim izumima, o domišljatom stilskom oblikovanju i o procvatu međunarodne trgovine. S time su povezana i tri važna događaja iz 1984. godine: 100. obljetnica švedskoga patentnog sustava, Svjetski kongres Međunarodne trgovinske komore (ICC) u Stockholmu i simpozij o robotici u Göteborgu. Sobna grijalica Primus postala je važan izvozni proizvod, kao i tetraedarsko (u obliku piramide) pakiranje za jednokratnu uporabu što ga proizvodi Tetra Pak. Suvremenu elektroniku predstavlja silikonski integrirani sklop RIFA-e, kakav se koristi na polju telekomunikacija, kao i industrijski robot Asee. Electroluxov usisavač u svoje je vrijeme bio iznimno suvremeno stilski oblikovan. Ručni rezač sira kojim se spretno »sastruže« točno određena količina sira tipično je švedski pratkičan izum. Drugi su izumi, poput spomenute grijalice Primus, bili mnogo bolje prihvaćeni u inozemstvu. A usisavač koji se za usisavanje koristio ventilatorom umjesto pumpom predstavljao je velik korak naprijed u prvome desetljeću prošloga stoljeća. Industrijski poduzetnik Axel Wenner-Gren zaradio je na njemu golemo bogatstvo. Inventivnost, a u nekim područjima i vjera u prodajnu vrijednost kvalitete održali su švedsku industriju na nogama usprkos konkurenciji s one strane tihooceanskog bazena. Kamera Hasselblad, prva na Mjesecu, dobar je primjer proizvoda koji je izrađen na konceptu kvalitete. Tu su i industrijski roboti koji ni izdaleka ne zamjenjuju ljudski rad; dapače, proizvodnja samih robota i njihovo održavanje zapošljava na tisuće radnika. Proizvodi ih Asea, jedna od najmultinacionalnijih švedskih kompanija. Asea svoj razvoj temelji na razvijanju vodećeg sustava za prijenos visokovoltne jednosmjerne struje na velike udaljenosti. Tijekom 90-ih godina 19. stoljeća švedska je industrija pronašla svoju sigurnost u izumima za industriju. Separator za mlijeko proizvođača Alfa-Laval, čelični kuglični ležaj što ga je proizveo Svenski Stål te domišljato spretna oprema za svrdlanje i bušenje koju je napravio Atlas Copco - sve je to dalo svoj velik doprinos švedskoj industriji.

Inventions Swedish industry is dependent on new inventions, innovative design and flourishing international trade. Three important events related to that book place in 1984: are connected with that: the 100th anniversary of the Swedish patent system, The World Congress of the International Chamber of Commerce in Stockholm and the Robotics symposium in Gothenburg. The Primus stove grew into a major export product. So did the tetrahedral pyramid disposable packaging manufactured by Tetra Pak. Modern electronics is represented by a RIFA silicon integtrated circuit which is used in telecommunications and an industrial robot from ASEA. The Electrolux vacuum cleaner had an exceptionaly modern design for its time. The cheese slicer, handily shaving off just the right amount of cheese, is a typically practical Swedish invention. Others, such as the Primus stove, were better accepted abroad. And the vacuum cleaner that used a fan rather than a pump to provide suction was a great break-through in the first decade of the 19th century. The industrialist Axel Wenner-Gren earned a fortune on it. Inventiveness, and in some areas the belief in the sales value of quality, kept the Swedish industry on its feet in the face of the competition coming from the Pacific Basin. The Hasselblad camera, first on the Moon, is a good example of a product built on the concept of quality. In addition, there are industrial robots: far from replacing human labour, the manufacturing and servicing of robots themselves provides jobs for thousands of workers. The are produced by Asea, one of Sweden’s most multinational corporations. Asea’s successful development has been based on the leading system for the transmission of high-voltage direct current over long distances. In 1890s, Swedish industry found its niche - inventions for industry. Alfa Laval’s milk separator, the steel ball bearing designed by Svenskt Stål and the ingenoius drilling and boring equipment created by Atlas Copco have all contributed to the development of Swedish industry.

Kada je Alexander Graham Bell izumio telefon, on se sastojao od mikrofona i odvojenog dijela za slušanje sve dok se nije pojavio Lars Magnus Ericsson iz Švedske koji je doslovno spojio ta dva dijela u jedan aparat. Spazivši metlu u uglu svoje radionice, Lars Magnus otpilio je komad drška pomoću kojega je, privezavši ih, spojio mikrofon sa slušalicom i proradio je suvremeni telefon. Bell je izumio telefon 1876. godine, a već 1885. Stockholm je imao više telefona po glavi stanovnika od svih drugih gradova u svijetu. Isti povoljan trend zabilježen je i 1924., kada je Stockholm imao 25 telefona na 100 stanovnika. Danas je velika grupacija Ericsson jedan od svjetskih lidera kompjutorizirane telefonije i širenja informacija.
Lars Magnus Ericsson When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, it consisted of a microphone and a listening piece; it took Lars Magnus Ericsson of Sweden to literally put the two togeher. Having spotted a broom in the corner of his workshop, Lars Magnus sawed off a bit of the stick, fastened the microphone to the earphone and the modern telephone came to life. Bell invented the telephone in 1876, and by 1885, Stockholm had more telephones per capita than any city in the world. That was still true in 1924, when Stockholm had 25 telephones per 100 inhabitants. Today, Ericsson group is one of the world’s leaders in computorized telephone exchanges and information technology.

Lena Philipsson uspješna je pjevačica i skladateljica. Nekoliko se puta visoko plasirala u švedskom glazbenom natjecanju Swedish Melodie Grand Prix. Roxette - Per Gessle i Marie Fredriksson - međunarodno je najuspješnija švedska grupa još od vremena grupe ABBA iz 70-ih godina prošlog stoljeća. Roxette je čak četiri puta zauzimao prvo mjesto na top-listama u SAD-u s pjesmama kao što su The Look/Pogled ili Listen to Your Heart/Poslušaj svoje srce. Jerry Williams švedski je kralj rocka sa soul glasom svjetske razine. Nastupa po pučkim zabavištima i lunaparkovima od 1962. godine.
Rock i pop Rock and Pop Lena Philipsson is a successful singer and composer. She achieved noteworthy results in the Swedish Melodie Grand Prix on several occasions. Roxette (Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson) is the most successful Swedish pop group at the international scene since the ABBA in 1970s. Roxette has been number one on the USA charts no less than four times with songs such as The Look or Listen to Your Heart. Jerry Williams is the Swedish king of rock with a world class soul voice. He has toured public amusement parks since 1962.

Ugledna nagrada »Zlatna marka« za najljepšu marku na svijetu 1981. godine pripala je Švedskoj. Njezin je sadržaj gotovo dirljivo jednostavan: naborana ruka koja se oslanja na štap. Marku koja je posvećena starijim osobama izradio je graver Zlatko Jakuš prema originalnoj fotografiji Georga Oddnera, a tiskale su je Švedske pošte 22. travnja 1980. godine. Pripada manjoj seriji maraka koja promiče ideju poštovanja i pomaganja djeci i starijim osobama uopće, koristeći se osnovnim jezikom slike koja je toliko slojevito sugestivna da joj ne treba dodati nijednu jedinu riječ. Švedske su pošte same izabrale tu marku i poslale je na godišnji natječaj talijanskoga filatelističkog časopisa »Il collezionista - Italia filatelica«. Bila je to hrabra odluka zbog rizika da jedna takva marka prođe nezapaženo u poplavi višebojnih vinjeta koje se silinom svojih boja natječu u privlačenju pozornosti. Između 42 marke iz 42 zemlje čitatelji časopisa iz cijeloga svijeta pažljivim su odabirom izabrali marku koja je bila neuočljivija od drugih, suzdržanija, ali mnogo bogatija značenjima. To je ujedno i pobjeda klasične bakrorezačke vještine, »najplemenitijega« grafičkog načina izražavanja. Drugu i treću nagradu osvojile su marke iz Čehoslovačke i Francuske.
Najljepša marka na svijetu The most beautiful stamp in the world The prestigeous award »Golden stamp« for the most beautiful stamp in the world for 1981 was won by Sweden. It’s subject is touchingly simple: a wrinkled hand leaning on a cane. This stamp, dedicated to elderly people, was engraved by Zlatko Jakuš according to the original photography by Georg Oddner, and it was printed by Swedish Posts on April 22, 1980. It belongs to a small series of stamps that promotes the general idea of respect and assistence for children and elderly by using the basic language of an image that is so multi-layered and suggestive that it needs not a single additional word. Swedish Posts chose the stamp themselves to enter the annual competition of the Italian philatelic journal »Il collezionista - Italia filatelica«. It was a brave and risky decision due to the fact that such a stamp could have passed totally unnoticed in the sea of multicoloured vignettes attracting attention by intensity of their colours. Out of 42 stamps from 42 countries readers from all over the world chose the stamp that was less noticable, more restrained, but much richer in meanings. It was also the triumph of the classical copper-plate method, »the noblest« manner of graphic expression. The second and the third award were won by stamps coming from Czechoslovakia and France.

Prilično sam mnogo vremena proveo pokušavajući pronaći anđela koji bi najbolje odgovarao mojoj marci. Nakon što sam istražio desetak crkava i isto toliko anđela kandidata pravoga sam anđela pronašao negdje sjeverno od Stockholma - malenu, dobro sačuvanu figuru, savršenu i s fotografskog i s graverskog stajališta. Anđeli se u mnogim biblijskim kontekstima prikazuju kao glasnici između čovjeka i Boga. Biblija ih ne opisuje potanko. Sve što o njima kaže jest da anđeli dođu, odu ili se iznenada ponovno pojave. U ranoj kršćanskoj umjetnosti anđeli su bili prikazivani kao mladi ljudi bez krila. Od kraja 4. stoljeća počeli su dobivati krila poput drevne rimske božice pobjede. Tijekom razdoblja renesanse rimska božica pobjede uzeta je kao model za nadolazeće anđele ženskoga roda. Pod utjecajem Kupida iliti Amora iz klasične paganske umjetnosti slikovno su prikazivana i djeca anđeli. U švedskoj srednjovjekovnoj umjetnosti anđeli su bili popularna lica. Osim što su bili glasnici, imali su i drugih zaduženja, kao što su, primjerice, obredno mahanje kadionicom zbog širenja mirisa zapaljenog tamjana, nošenje granatih svijećnjaka ili odvođenje duša mrtvih u nebesa. No, najčešće ih vidimo kako sviraju božansku glazbu na različitim instrumentima. Anđeo na marci svira rog. U živahnome stilu baroknoga razdoblja anđeo se gega ruke ispružene prema naprijed, pušući u rog tako snažno da mu obrazi pucaju od nabreklosti.
Božićna marka 1980. Christmas stamp 1980 I spent quite a lot of time trying to find a wooden angel that would best suit my Christmas stamp. Having explored more than ten churches and as many angel candidates, I found the right angel north of Stockholm - a small, well-preserved wooden figure, perfect both from the photographic and engraving point of view. Angels are featured in many Biblical contexts as messengers between the man and God. They are not described in detail in the Bible. All the Bible says is that angels come, go away or suddenly reappear. In early Christian art, angels were depicted as young men without wings. After the end of the 4th century they started to have wings like the ancient Roman goddess of victory. During the Renaissance the Roman goddess of victory was taken as a model for female angels. And under the influence of Cupid (i. e. Amor) from classical pagan art, angels were also depicted as children. In Swedish medieval art angels were very popular motifs. Apart from their role of messengers, they had many other tasks, for example, swinging the incence censer, carrying candelabras and taking souls of the dead to heaven. Above all, one sees them playing heavenly music on different instruments. The angel on the stamp is blowing a horn. In the lively style of the baroque period, the angel walks with a swinging gait, an arm stretched out in a big gesture and blowing so hard that his ckeeks are swallen.

Često sam, i moram to reći - rado, na markama obrađivao zaštićene i ugrožene vrste životinja kao što su vukovi, orlovi, morževi, različite vrste ježeva, ptice... Kako ih razvrstati po rodu i vrsti? Ždral, primjerice, ima ljupko latinsko ime: Grus grus. Čovjek koji je ptici dao latinsko ime bio je Carl von Linné. Poznat ostatku svijeta kao Linnaeus, uveo je binarnu nomenklaturu po kojoj svaka biljka i životinja ima naziv roda i vrste. Bila je to važna prekretnica u prirodnoj znanosti. Linnéov sustav Systema Naturae ugledni njujorški klub kolekcionara Groler Club uvrstio je među stotinu knjiga koje su najviše pridonijele razvoju čovječanstva. Linnaeus je napisao stotine knjiga i dopisivao se sa 70 prirodoslovaca, znanstvenika iz inozemstva. Sva je pisma također pisao na latinskome jer, usprkos svim svojim ranim putovanjima, nikada nije naučio govoriti nijedan živući strani jezik.
Životinje Animals I have often, and I must say gladly, engraved pictures of protected and endangered animal species, namely wolfs, eagles, walruses, different species of hedgehogs, birds ... How can we separate them into genera and species? The crane, for instance, has a lovely Latin name: Grus grus. The man who gave the bird its Latin name was Carl von Linné. Known to the rest of the world as Linnaeus, he was the originator of the present universal system of binary nomenclature, which describes every plant and animal with one name for the genus and one for the species. It was a milestone in natural science. His landmark Systema Naturae was listed by the prestigious Groler Club of collectors in New York among the one hundred books which contributed most to the development of mankind. Linnaeus wrote hundreds of books and corresponded with about 70 scientists from abroad. He wrote all his letters in Latin, since - despite his early travels - he never learnt to speak a living foreign language.

Šveđani prirodno naginju uspjesima u sportovima na snijegu i ledu, kao što su skijaški kros ili hokej na ledu. Što je u redu, jer ako vam nagomilani snijeg stoji pred kućnim vratima puna tri mjeseca godišnje, pametnije je poduzeti nešto konstruktivno nego psovati. To što su švedski sportaši i sportašice dobri kao pojedinci dijelom je rezultat tradicionalnih aktivnosti u prirodi, začudnih za zemlju s dugačkom mračnom zimom. Čak i tijekom najkraćega i najmračnijega dana uvijek ima skijaša svih dimenzija i sposobnosti koji oru kroz snijeg. Isto je i sa stolnim tenisom, svi ga vole - od elite do onih s dvije lijeve noge! Oni sportski entuzijasti koji preziru gomile oduševljavaju se klizanjem na duge staze: čim kratko razdoblje toplijega vremena otopi snijeg koji pokriva zaleđena jezera i rijeke, pa čak i cijele arhipelage, a hladni val zaledi površine u bliješteće ogledalo, posvuda ćete zateći klizače koji kližu i brzo i vrlo daleko, sa štapovima koji su uvijek spremni za provjeravanje leda; jedina su im ograničenja sumrak i bolni leđni mišići.
Rekreacijski sportovi Recreational sports Swedes are inclined to do well in sports that are performed on snow and ice, such as cross-country skiing and ice hockey. If there is snow piled up outside your front door for three months of the year, you might as well stop swearing at it and use it for something useful. If Swedish athletes are doing well in individual sports, it is partly because there is a tradition of outdoor activity, astonishing for a country with such a long dark winter. Even on the shortest, darkest days, there are always skiers of all ages and abilities ploughing through the snow. As with the table tennis, everyone loves it, from the elite to those with two left feet! For winter sports enthusiasts not attracted to crowds, long distance skating is an exhilirating pastime: when a short period of warmer weather melts the snow covering the ice of lakes and rivers, or even archipelagoes, and a cold snap freezes the surface into a shining mirror, you will find skaters travelling fast and very far, with prepared staves for checking suspect ice and with only the dusk and aching back muscles as their limits.

Šveđani su se dugo smatrali malom nacijom u svijetu sporta, bez mnogo nade da se ravnopravno nose s velikim tipovima. No, sredinom sedamdesetih jedna je generacija mladih sportaša prouzročila dramatične promjene. Dvojica od njih postali su legende u očima Šveđana - teniski as Björn Borg i slalomski prvak Ingemar Stenmark, obojica ponešto nepristupačni i nesposobni opisati vlastite osjećaje. Nema veze; Šveđani su bili ushićeni njihovim uspjesima pa su sami ispunjavali sve rupe i nepoznanice iz njihova života prepuštajući Stenmarku da pobijedi u 85 slalomskih utrka, a Borgu da osvoji pet rekordnih uzastopnih naslova na Wimbledonu.
Björn Borg Ingemar Stenmark Swedes used to see themselves as a small nation in the world of sport, with not much hope of competing on equal footing with the big guys. But in the mid-seventies, a single generation of young sportsmen caused a dramatic change. Two of them were to become living legends in the eyes of their fellow Swedes: tennis ace Björn Borg and slalom champion Ingemar Stenmark. Both men were difficult to approach and anything but expert in describing their feelings. It did not matter: Swedes were ecstatic about their successes and they filled all the holes in their biographies themselves as Stenmark raced to 85 victories in slalom races and Björn Borg took unprecedented five straight Wimbledon single titles.

I Hrvatska ima svoga teniskog asa kojeg Hrvati obožavaju isto toliko koliko i Šveđani Borga. Goran Ivanišević. Wimbledonski pobjednik, kao i Borg, svojim je specifičnim stilom i snažnim udarcima, a osobito nesputanim temperamentom osvajao ljubitelje tenisa diljem svijeta. Oduševio je čak i poslovično hladne Britance svojom prvom pobjedom u Wimbledonu, gdje se nekoliko godina kasnije, u velikom stilu, zapravo i oprostio od svoje karijere. Njegovo je ime zlatnim slovima upisano u povijest hrvatskoga sporta koji mu sigurno duguje još pokoju novu marku ili ulicu s njegovim imenom.
Goran Ivanišević Croatia also has its tennis ace that Croats worship as much as Swedes adore Borg. Goran Ivanišević! And yes, he is a Wimbledon winner too, a player who conquered tennis fans all over the world with his specific style, powerful shots and especially with his unrestrained temperament in particular. Even the proverbially cold Britons were thrilled after his first and victory at Wimbledon, where several years later, and in a grand style, he bid goodbye to his professional career. His name has been engraved with golden letters into the history of Croatian sports, which certainly owes him a few more new stamps or streets bearing his name.

U tom sam prelijepom gradu boravio i radio trideset godina, dovoljno da ga temeljito upoznam, ali i graverski obradim na markama. Posebno mi se dopala vizura grada iz moga stockholmskog ateljea, na marci, u kojemu su nastali mnogi moji uraci koji su sada predstavljeni u monografiji i na izloĹžbi.
Stockholm I lived and worked in this beautiful city for thirty years - enough to get acquainted with it thoroughly and feature it on stamps. I especially liked its vista from my Stockholm studio, presented here on a stamp, were most of my works included in this volume and the exhibition were created.

Prvu hrvatsku marku Zračna pošta, koja je tiskana u jeku rađanja nove hrvatske države 1991., zbog žurnosti sam morao osmisliti i izgravirati za samo dva dana, doslovno od petka navečer do ponedjeljka. Tiskana je u čakovečkom »Zrinskom« 9. rujna 1991. godine. Pripremajući materijale i podatke za ovu monografiju ostao sam, sjećam se, pomalo zatečen informacijom da je ta marka tiskana u nakladi od 8,127.450 komada! Graver zapravo nikada niti ne razmišlja u tim razmjerima sve dok mu netko ne predoči brojke. Ne usuđujem se niti pokušati izračunati koliko je sveukupno tiskano svih mojih maraka!
Zračna pošta Air Post The first Croatian stamp Air Post was printed at the time when Croatian state was fighting for its sovereignty and independence. Because of utmost urgency, I had to design it and engrave it in only two days, literally between Friday night and Monday morning. It was printed in a Čakovec printing company Zrinski on September 9, 1991. While I prepared materials and data for this book I recall that I was somewhat perplexed by the information that this stamp was published in the printing run of 8,127,450 copies! The engraver actually never even thinks in these proportions until somebody shows him the numbers. I do not even dare attempt to calculate how many copies of my stamps have been printed in total so far!

Bio je to, zapravo, prijedlog za treću hrvatsku marku 1991. godine, koji tadašanji Odbor poštanskog odjela za filateliju nije prihvatio. Izgravirana je i otisnuta u dubotisku. Original je uvršten u izložbu. Autor skulpture je Robert Frangeš Mihanović.

Portreti Portraits
Fotografija u Švedskoj proslavila je 150. obljetnicu 1990. godine. U jesen 1840. u palači Stockholm Palace bili su izloženi prvi dagerotipi, tj. fotografije načinjene pomoću srebrnih soli. Marka na lijevoj strani prikazuje fotoaparat velikog formata. Na desnoj je motiv fotoaparata malog formata. Predstavljen je 1925. godine i danas je najpopularniji tip fotoaparata kako među amaterima, tako i među profesionalcima. Osim što je bio pjesnik, pisac i kritičar, Johan August Strindberg bio je i strastveni - fotograf. Koristio se fotoaparatom velikog formata, uobičajenim tipom aparata na prijelazu stoljeća. Ponio ga je sa sobom i 1886. godine kada je s obitelji otputovao u Švicarsku. Tamo je i snimljena većina sačuvanih Strindbergovih fotografija. Jedna je od njih i umjetnički autoportret na marci.
August Strindberg Photography celebrated its 150th anniversary in Sweden in 1990. In the autumn of 1840 Daguerrotypes (photographs made with silver salts) were exhibited in the Stockholm Palace. The stamp on the left depicts a large-format camera. The righ-hand motif is a small-format camera. It was introduced in 1925 and nowdays it is the most popular camera both for amateurs and professionals. Besides being a poet, a writer and a critic, Johan August Strindberg was also a passionate photographer. He used a large-format camera, the most common type at the turn of the century. He had the camera in 1886 when he took his family to Switzerland. Most of the preserved Strindberg’s photographs were taken there. One of them is his self-portrait on the stamp.

Prvi roman Moe Martinson (1890. - 1964.) objavio je Bonnier 1933. godine pod naslovom »Žene i stabla jabuka«. Scena iz knjige dala nam je ideju za motiv na marci. Autorica opisuje seljaka koji potajno promatra dvije žene koje se zajedno kupaju u praonici, poprilično neobičan događaj u selu. Ženama to dojadi. »Fredrika otvara vrata praonice. Stoji gola u otvoru dok se hladan zrak kovitla oko nje poput oblaka. Visoka, bijela i skladna doima se poput utvare u mraku siječanjske noći...«
Moa Martinson Moa Martinson’s (1890 - 1964) first novel was published in 1933 by Bonniers under the title »Women and Apple Trees«. A scene from the book provided us with the idea for one of the stamps. The author described a farmer furtively watching two women bathing togehter in the laundry house; an unusual event in the village. The women were fed up. »Fredrika opens the laundry door. She stands naked in the opening with cold air whirling around her like a cloud. Tall, white and harmoniously built, she looks like an apparition in the dark January night ...«

U našem stanu u Palmotićevoj ulici u Zagrebu držali smo ribice u staklenkama koje su se nekim nesretnim slučajem razbile. Ribe su uginule, a ja sam ih htio vratiti natrag u staklenke, što sam i napravio u gravuri akvatinti.
Staklenke Glass jars In our apartment in Palmotićeva Street in Zagreb we used to keep goldfish in glass jars that got accidentally broken. The fish perished, and all I wanted to do was to put them back into glass jars, which I did - in aquatint engraving.

Opus Selo nadovezuje se na opus Drvo jer se radi o istoj sredini. Obrađivao sam uglavnom rustikalne, seoske interijere: od sobe u kojoj je rođena i odrasla moja majka do različitih kutaka i pojedinosti iz bakine kuće u kojoj žive dvije stare sestre.
Selo Village My opus »Village« ties in with the opus »Wood« because it depicts the same environment. I mostly drew old rustic interiors: from the room in which my mother was born and grew up to different nooks and details from my grandmother’s house where to elderly sisters live.

U selu Oborovu, u Bistri, često sam i u različitim razdobljima života šetao niz potok duž kojega su tiho umirale uvijek pomalo tajanstvene vrbe i breze. Što me ponukalo da ih ovjekovječim? Jednostavno, želio sam ih nekako spojiti i zadržati bez obzira na to što sam šibom od tih istih vrba znao kao dječak dobiti po stražnjici od majke Zlate koja je, nažalost, nedavno preminula ostavivši iza sebe prazninu koju čak ni gravure s njezinim likom ne mogu posve ispuniti. Kasnije se uz vrbe pojavio i lik moje tada trogodišnje kćeri Marije koja je, kao i ja, zavoljela dolaziti u bakino rodno selo i štetati istim putem. Bez šibe.
Drvo Wood In the village of Oborovo, in Bistra, I often walked by a brook in different periods of my life where secretive willows and birches were slowly dying away. What was it that prompted me to immortalize them? I simply wanted to join them together and keep them forever although, as a boy, I even got spanked with switches from the very same trees by my mother Zlata who has, unfortunately, passed away leaving behind her huge emptiness that even my engravings of her image can not fill. Later, alongside the willows, there appeared the image of my three-year old daughter Maria, who, as much as I did, loved to visit her grandmother’s village and walk along the same path. Zlatko Jakuš: Sonata za oko i ruku RUKA I OKO OKO I RUKA RUKA JE ZARUČNICA OKU! OKO JE VJERENIK RUCI!
Zajedničkim udruženim činom, iz mitske magle pradavnine, objaviše svijetu zaruke svoje uočljive rukograme i rukorise, očite rukocrte i rukopise. To je složni par koji svoj na vjernost sklopljen biumvirat posvjedočiše ugreblinama i bojom krvi na zidu pretpovijesne spilje. To je početak i počelo, to je začetak i začelo - likovni AB. OVO - na početku bješe slika, sažeta u slovo! Povijest likovne umjetnosti zajednička je pohvala oku i ruci! Ranko Marinković, poznati književnik hrvatski, nazvao je ruku »izvršnim organom Duha, Svijesti, Inteligencije, Mašte, Talenta«! Zlatko Jakuš, proslavljeni grafičar i graver hrvatski, svojeručno je »pozlatio« i obistinio ovu »poetičnu narukvicu«! Stoga suočimo se s rukom Zlatkovom! Stoga suočimo se s okom Jakuševim! Jer u dijalogu ruke i oka začimlje se, olikovljuje i definira graversko umijeće. Oko - radoznalo odškrinuti prozorčić - zagledano u okružje svoje i nutrinu sabire, izabire i ubire »likovni libretto« koji ruka »likovno uglazbljuje«. Pritom se oni uzajamno nadziru, provjeravaju i povjeravaju, sude, osuđuju i prosuđuju. K tome, sinestezijskim pomakom često mijenjaju zadane uloge - pa ruka gleda, dok oko pipa! Ruka rukovodi okom. Oko očijuka rukom... Mala očna muzika... Zvukovlje gravira... Na svojoj je klavijaturi Zlatko Jakuš maestralno odsvirao stavak Velikoga hrvatskog grafičara koji kazuje da »Grafika je magija. Crna magija. Magija crno-bijeloga«. K tome, slikovno je izmirio makrokozmos s mikrokozmosom: »Bilo da gleda kroz sitnozor, ili kroz dalekozor pjesnik uvijek vidi isto«, kako nas poetično naučava veliki »filozof« i »poetik prostora«, ističući da »je veliko još jednom sadržano u malome«. Zlatko Jakuš: Sonata for an Eye and a Hand A HAND AND AN EYE AN EYE AND A HAND A HAND IS AN EYE’S FIANCÉE! AN EYE IS A HAND’S FIANCÉ!
By a joint action, coming from the mythical haze of the ancient times, they announced their engagement to the world in form of visible drawings, sketches and manuscripts. They are an intricate couple that pledged their fidelity to one another by engravings and the colour of blood on the wall of a prehistoric cave. That is the beginning, the origin and the source - the ABC of the visual arts. In the beginning there was an image, condensed in a letter! The history of visual art is a praise of both the eye and the hand! Ranko Marinković, famous Croatian author, described the hand as »the executive body of the Spirit, Consciousness, Intelligence, Fantasy and Talent«! Zlatko Jakuš, renowned Croatian graphic designer and engraver, has turned that »poetical bracelet« into gold and realised it! Therefore, let us face Zlatko’s hand! Let us face Jakuš’s eye! Because in that dialogue of the hand and the eye lies the origin and definition of the art of engraving. The eye - a curiously opened window - fixed at its surroundings and the inner man, collects and selects »visual libretto« that the hand »artistically composes«. In doing that, they supervise each other, they control, test and judge each other. And with a synestethic shift, they often switch roles so that the hand ends up watching, while the eye is touching! The eye drives the hand. The hand flirts with the eye... A Little Eye Music... The sound of the engraving chisel... On his keyboard Zlatko Jakuš played magnificently a movement from the Great Croatian Engraver which says that »Engraving is magic. Black magic. The magic of black and white.« Moreover, in his art he made peace between the macrocosm and microcosm: »Whether he looks through a magnifying glass or through a binocular, the poet always sees the same«. This is the teaching of the great »philosopher« and »poet of the space«, who emphasises that »the great is once again contained in the small«. Bravo maestro! SALIH ISAAC

Rođen 2. studenoga 1945. u Zagrebu. Srednju je školu završio u Zagrebu, a jednogodišnji studij škole za opće umjetničko obrazovanje na Stockholmskom univerzitetu. Studirao je na Akademiji likovnih umjetnosti, smjer grafika, u Stockholmu kod prof. Nilsa G. Stenqvista od 1971. do 1975. godine, specijalizirajući gravuru. Izlagao u Zagrebu, Varaždinu, Splitu, Ljubljani, Rijeci, New Yorku, Tokiju, Taipeiju, Singapuru, Paviji, Madridu, Parizu, Stockholmu.
ZLATKO JAKUŠ, biografija / biography Born on November 2, 1945 in Zagreb. After his secondary schooling in Zagreb, he attended a one-year course in arts at the Stockholm University. He studied at the Academy of Arts (graphic arts) in Stockholm in the class of professor Nils G. Stenqvist between 1971 - 1975, specializing in intaglio (engraving) techniques. He exhibited in Zagreb, Varaždin, Split, Ljubljana, Rijeka, New York, Tokio, Taipei, Singapur, Pavia, Madrid, Paris, Stockholm.
