“Combining library and hotel in one building through the principle of going from public to private.”
This project is located by the riverside of Huangpu River in Lujiazui, Shanghai. The building is partly on land and partly floating on the Huangpu River. This building will utilize the relationship between the main building and the negative space to connect people’s activity space in the library, hotel and riverside.
The idea is to start the building from a point on the shore and radiate into the river according to the principle of order from public to private, while three in-between spaces are sandwiched between the four main buildings.
Three entirely different structural systems were designed for the canopies of these three different spaces, so that people on the ground can have different spatial feelings. They can read, learn, communicate and exercise. Because of the large horizontal span of the building, I designed different sky wells on three canopies according to the rules of the grid system, which can bring light and shadow effects to people while achieving top lighting.
At the same time, in the part of the hotel, I twisted the rooms at a certain angle, so that people in each room can no longer see the steel jungle behind them, but the river view. While people live in this building, they could visually away from the concrete jungle.
Let’s find a good hotel to live for 2 days instead of our tiny apartment, it would be better if there is a quiet work space so that I can have online meetings.
A Place that Could Make People’s life and Work Better
The site is located in Huangpu District,Shanghai, the most prosperous area in Shanghai. High-rises office buildings surround Huangpu River make this area a place of people gathering. In this high-density district, people who work and live here must suffer the high pressure of work and expensive rent, nonetheless they are still aggressive to improve themselves. So, a place that could balance their life and study is needed in this area. The “Library+Hotel” is proposed to respond to these social needs.
I’ve been sitting all day, I really want to find a place where I can do exercise, study as well, to prepare for my qualification exam.
If I’m not going to run business this weekend, I would go to a library to sit and study for days to improve myself, but I’m uncertain if there is a room to sleep in the library.
I can’t wait to go to a hotel where nobody could disturb me this weekend so that I can have a good rest.
“Hotel+Library” Aggregation
Optimized orderly patterns: People could naturally experience different state: from public to private. Improved flexibility: Considering different people may have different needs, they can have multiple choices at the first floor, people can either go straight to the hotel rooms or go to exterior area to enjoy spaces combine library and hotel activities.
“Hotel+Library”: From Public to Private
The first floor defines three in-between spaces of the building as three different topics, creates different public or private space experiences for people through three different types of structural systems, and enriches the way people read. There are courtyard reading spaces, sunken plazas, independent glass rooms in negative spaces, as well as stack room, reading room and café bar in main buildings. People can also walk freely through these main buildings and negative spaces. This long span spaces are mainly lit from top.
This section and rendering show how this part of in-between space create the feeling that reading in the forest for users. And the way that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior.
Anchorage,Sunken Space and Glass Boxes
This in-between space creates a variety of different spatial experiences for users to read. They can go to private glass rooms, sunken squares and read, even the riverside terrace is also a good choice.
Swimming,Chatting and Studying
The structure system in this in-between space separate it into multiple space units so that users can do different activities in different units, where they can chat and read, as well as swim and exercise.
Generative Process of “Hotel” rooms
Step 1
Sight
Arrange hotel rooms traditionally and divide them into 3 types of rooms: standard room, superior room and deluxe room.
Rotate some of the shear walls by an angle to change the direction of the room while changing the structural system.
Sight
Rotate the remaining shear walls at a smaller angle to divide hotel rooms.
Let Guests Have a Better View Rotation of the walls provide guests better views on the other side of the Huangpu River, And avoiding eye contacts with people on the street or in the “library”.

“Two main buildings intertwine by space corridor like lovers.”
Hengyang is an ancient city with a long history, Located in Hunan Province, China. The Battle of Hengyang took place in 1944. Many soldiers in Hengyang fought bravely, and many gave their lives for the country. Until now, many different museums commemorate their exploits. But rather than this, I want to tell the love story of these warriors by designing a building.
They met, fell in love, separated during the war, and finally reunited after the war. I think these are memorable stories. So, I would like to let visitors better feel these stories through the shape and interior space of the building, and feel the changes of the moods of lovers in different stages of the loves during The Battle of Hengyang.
Residential Buildings Tributary of Zhengshui River Buildings in construction
Undeveloped area of the city
The site is located in Fengjia Bay Culture and Technology Industrial Park, with Peijiang River in the east, Tributary of Zhengshui River and Linshui Road in the south, Xuguang Expressway in the west, and Zhengshui in the north. The area is far away from the city center, surrounded by mostly residential areas and commercial buildings under construction and cultural buildings.
Historical Timeline in Hengyang
Industry and commerce in Hengyang have achieved great development, and the urban population at that time exceeded 500,000.
The 5 towns of Donghua, Yanfeng, West Lake, Shigu, and Jiangdong in Hengyang County and the 3 townships of Guangfu, Qigang, and Linghu in the suburbs are set up as Hengyang City.
Hengyang is located at the junction of the Guangdong-Han Railway and the Hunan-Guizhou Railway, it is the only railway passage to Guangxi and Sichuan in the west, so it became the gateway to the southwest and the military area of importance.
Defense of Hengyang took place in Hengyang, Hunan Province, The war was known as the “Oriental Moscow Defense War”. It was the longest frontal battle between the Chinese army.
After the victory of the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Civil War between the Chinese Nationalist Party and the CCP, New China was established, and Hengyang became a heroic city to be commemorated.
A couple’s love story of during the war
According to the development process of a pair of lovers in the war, from their acquaintance, separation to final reunion, this state of separation and reunion can lead to four curves surrounding each other, which serve as an important basis for this project.
Explosive Section Perspective: “Time Tunnels between galleries”
Visitors shuttle back and forth between the main buildings through space corridors, which are not only passages connecting different theme galleries, but also “time tunnels” that connecting different stages of the love stories.
Enjoy the Scenery Outside
Visitors can enjoy the scenery outside when going to the next theme gallery. And can also make eye contact with the people upstairs, which makes people’s spatial experience more interesting.
Make Eye Contact with Visitors in Opposite
Visitors can go to the next gallery through the space corridors, and they can also make eye contact with visitors walking in the air corridor on the other side.

Mount Everest expedition is a pinnacle of mountaineering. It is an adventure of a lifetime that involves the harsh challenges and dangers of Climbing Mount Everest. The crown jewel of the Mahalangur Himalayan range attracts hundreds of climbers every year.
There is a “death zone” above, 8000 m. It is the most dangerous section of the route. Extreme freezing weather at high altitudes is one of the top challenges during this climb. There are crevasses on ice that can swallow climbers instantly. Besides that, avalanches and falls can be fatal for climbers as they are quite unpredictable.
Furthermore, climate change has played a significant role in impacting Mount Everest’s condition. Substandard management, summit fever, oxygen deprivation, are also dangers of climbing Mount Everest.
So, a small house suspended in the mid-mountain of Mount Everest to provide temporary shelter for passing climbers or those who have encountered difficulties in the climbing process so that they can be buffered. It’s a good way to help them better climb to the top of Mount Everest.
What are the Dangers of Climbing Mount Everest?

Halfway up Mount Everest
Mount Everest is a peak in the Himalaya mountain range. It is located between Nepal and Tibet, an autonomous region of China. At 8,849 meters (29,032 feet), it is considered the tallest point on Earth. In the nineteenth century, the mountain was named after George Everest, a former Surveyor General of India.
Main Buildings are Suspended by Truss Structure
Exploded Structure and Envelope
The main structure of the building is a steel plate inserted into the mountain, and the steel plate is fixed by four ropes. Fix the structural walls on both sides to the trusses, and fix structures such as floor slabs and glass windows to the structural walls.
Different Use Areas are Divided by Heights
The interior is designed in a stepped shape, and different use spaces are divided by height, so that every position in the room can enjoy the snow mountain scene without being blocked.
Public Baths and Viewing Platform
The structural support plate of the building is a gentle slope that can be accessed, forming an outdoor viewing platform at the edge. And there are public baths between the rooms.

“This is a 1:1 construction work, which can be used as an exhibition, but also has the function of sitting, and it can also be a space for children to crawl or play.”
We extracted the elements of mountains and caves in a Chinese painting, and we drew different shapes according typology to interpret these two elements, then we scanned and inputted them into the computer to form different 2D pieces. We also got inspiration from the structure of traditional furniture, borrowed the traditional joint structure “mortise and tenon” and applied it to our construction works, clamped different boards, and got a good result.
We finally made the appearance of a rockery through this way of clamping the panels, and hollowed out the interior with the concept of a cave to establish an interesting space where people can walk and sit. Making changes in the height of the roof so that there will be line of sight interaction and barrier when people walk or sit inside. There are also many children crawling and playing in this space.
A mortise and tenon joint connects two pieces of wood or other material. Woodworkers around the world have used it for thousands of years to join pieces of wood, mainly when the adjoining pieces connect at right angles. Mortise and tenon joints are strong and stable joints that can be used in many projects. They furnish a strong outcome and connect by either gluing or locking into place. The mortise and tenon joint also gives an attractive look.
