02 TINGUA BIO RESERVE

Course: Architectural Design Studio 1 Group project, 2018 Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil University: Politecnico di Milano

PROJECT STRATEGY The chosen site sits between the reserve and the settlements of Monatevideu. This parcel of land cur足rently witnesses the inception of meagre urbanisation with the growth of settle足 ments towards the Aat lands between the valley. The site holds potential to be set as an example of sustainable city model as well as needs to be intervened in order to create a buffer between the reserve and the settlement redefining the identi足ty of Tingua and rem足edying the damage. Transit Integration Lack of efficient c onnections has led to Tingua being an isolated i nformal settlement. Social Innovation The existing educational and research scenario does not use the potential the bio reserve provides as an tourist attraction and a lack of awareness towards the same. Environmental Sustainability The place requires measure to ensure sustainable and ecofriendly development. Shaping an Identity Cultual Symbosis

BIO RESERVE RESEARCH CENTER

BIO Reserve Research Centre Sitting along the periphery of the Tingua Biologi cal reserve, the quaint towns of Montevideu and Tingua seem to be forgotten as they grow with informal settlements and stealthily seep into the natural reserve. The people lack a sense of community and ownership while no municpal bodies govern the infrastructure. In a time like this where the city suffers from a major lack of identity, the project aims to fill this gap between the nature and settlements, citizens and tourists by constructing a set of landscape of different tonalities, in turn establishing and connecting it to the centrality of Rio di Janiero.

04 UNBUILT

Landscape through the narratives

Course: Landscape Design Studio. Group project, 2019 Location: Vigolzone, Italy University: Politecnico di Milano

PROJECT STRATEGY

You can tell a lot about a place by what its people built. But what they fail to built is often just as telling. - Mark Osbaldeston UNBUILT adjective NOT BUILT ON In the current context treated with respect to the unbuilt formations of landscape which identify the site of Cantina Romanogli. NARRATIVES noun THE REPRESENTATION IN ART OF AN EVENT OR STORY The project tries to reflect the narrative of the land using minimal interventions reflecting the story of the space.

MASTER PLAN

Redefining the Historical Toretta, Framing the landscape

Experiencing the terrain, Highlighting the Viewpoint

TERRITORIAL SECTIONS

Reusing the Abandoned Buildings, Historical Significance, Retaining the Architectural identity ,

01. RE-TRACING THE IMAGE The current landscape holds numerous dramatic aspects from slopes to the repetitive linearity of the vineyards. The idea is to pause the visitor at the starting of the trail to experience and understand this composition which encourages the visitor to read the landscape in his own language.

02. TOUCHING THE TERRAIN The geological evolution of the site has led to the formation of this defining slope that plays a major role in arranging the rest of the unbuilt elements of the landscape. The existing slope offers vantage points to the Cantina but does not address the pedestrian experience of the terrain which is explored in intervention of the slope.

03. READING THE PAST The old abandoned structures in some way anchor the image of the Cantina. Being on top of the slope they stand as defining architectural elements that frame the landscape and serve as heritage.

04. REFLECTIONS IN TIME The artificial lake sits hidden behind the abandoned buildings on the site. The presence of the lake serves a functional and climatic purpose, but the essence of it is left neglected. The intervention explores the idea of giving it a temporal dimension using materials while providing a space to sit and experience the lake.

05. ASCEND IN.WILD Bordering the upper part of the slope is the edge of the wild and productive landscape which stays in this constant state of dynamism where if left untouched, the land is reclaimed by the wild. The textures of wild feel dramatically varied with the height. The trail frames different aspects of the landscape while redefining the historical toretta that once stood on the site. .
