_AN INTRODUCTION TO THE AW14 RANGE
AW14
The Dr. Martens’ AW14 range is inspired by early skinheads’ precise attention to detail, mixed with the brands history of rebellion. Around 1968-1969, this tribe sprang up across inner city Britain, with a fierce working-class pride and a strong anti-establishment attitude. Focusing on utility with a smart edge. Dr. Martens has picked out elements of this style to create a range that is heavily influenced by the movement and how they wore their boots and shoes. The brand’s designers even tracked down many vintage pairs from that era for particular inspiration to create both authentic versions of original styles, as well as modern takes on footwear worn in that time. Showing that – as with skinhead – it is not just about boots. Dr. Martens have created an extensive line of shoes using the brand’s authentic DNA and heritage. Neither is this collection just about welted product. There are a number of more casual soles, fabrics and detailing ideas that present the skinhead style with a modern twist. Across the range, the colour palette is predominantly oxblood and black, with an additional number of carefully selected seasonal fabrics.

REINVENTED: CORE APPLIQUE The ultimate example of youth culture championing working-class style. Early skinheads in the 1960s wore factory steelies, often inherited from their worker dads. It wasn’t long before some skins cut away the leather on the toe to expose the metal underneath, to add a menacing edge. Later in the 1970s and 1980s, punks and other subcultures as well as designers such as Ray Petri would copy this look. With the Core Applique Grip Shoe and Grasp Boot, this history is replayed, exposing the metal with a fully external toe cap. The toe caps are combined with silver eyelets, white laces, black welt stitch and a heel tag. Based on an archive 3-eye shoe and industrial boot, both sit on a thick smoke outsole and are available in classic black.

Simple, low-key factory footwear was highly appealing to early skinheads and it is this that provides the inspiration for the Lace Shoe and Lace Boot within the Hardwear styles. The Lace Shoe includes ski-hook eyelets taken from an archive DM’s shoe. The same ski-hooks are used on the 8-Eye Lace Boot, as well as a black-on-black script on the heel tag. Both come on the sturdy and impactful Ben outsole.

The suppleness of worn-in leather is duplicated by folding and bending the footwear by hand, to mimic the effect of years of wear. The leather surface has been deliberately scuffed to make it look ‘worn-in’. The styles have also been through an ‘antique-ing’ process - oxblood leather is over-polished with black, then buffed to a shine, leaving black polish in the crevices, as well as on the grooved sole and the stitching.

Black and white footwear was popular within Two Tone in the late 1970s, but actually its origins go back much earlier, to the jazz era of the 1920s. On the English Brogue, a very striking triple combination of black with a Winter White Illusion leather is mixed with a Tan Illusion Soft T leather.

The Brogue Shoe is also available in a more understated Burnished Tan Servo Lux. The classic Chelsea Boot also utilises this leather, on a narrower more refined last. The more subcultural Tassel Slip On Brogue uses the black and white combination in a style based on a vintage design but with a new brogue pattern. _FITTING INFORMATION - DIFFERENT LAST SHAPES Over the history of Dr. Martens, our core Original styles have epitomised the look which people immediately associate with the brand, be it the 1460 8-eye boot, the 1461 3-eye boot, the 1914 14-eye boot or our classic Mary Jane. When shoes are made, the ‘last’ shape is usually in wooden or plastic form and shaped roughly like a foot which determines the fit and style of a boot or shoe. Fundamentally, in today’s product offering, Dr. Martens uses three main last shapes on core Original styles, namely the “59” last, the “84” last and the “Comfort” last (available specifically in both Men’s/Unisex and Women’s) Each of these lasts differ in their shape and fit, resulting in aesthetic differences, mainly to the toe area of the boot or shoe.
The Comfort last, in both versions of Men’s and Women’s, was introduced in 2006, which allows for a more generous fit to that of the 59 or 84 lasts, and provides the wearer that additional comfort. Aesthetically, the shape of the last and hence the shoe or boot, will be slightly wider and fuller when compared to either the 59 or 84 last. The Comfort last allows a full footbed (insole) to be inserted into the shoe/boot, whereas the 59 and 84 last shapes allow for a rear heel footbed (insole) only. The below images show a toe down comparison of these different lasts on our 1460 8-eye boot and on our 1461 3-eye shoe. These images illustrate the subtle difference in shape and width of each last.
The 59 last is acknowledged as an amalgam of many lasts within our business, which originated in the mid 80’s and has since become known as the classic last shape for Dr. Martens core Original styles. The 84 last is a more refined version of the 59 last, which has a sleek, tapered shape to the toe.

AW14 Crafted for Women is all about textures, hand-finishing and a retro colour palette of natural browns. The gladiatorial Double Ankle Strap 3-Eye is offered in an all over bronze Anilmorbido. This is a subtle metallic leather that also completely covers the Interlace 3-Eye Shoe, including the interlacing itself. On the Lester, the 3-Eye silhouette is available in Black Bronze Zucchero, a sparkly suede that has been treated to create a grainy finish. On the wedge-soled Brogue 3-Eye Shoe and Brogue 6-Eye Boot, the Maracaibo is a faux croc leather print with a deep, almost 3D finish. This premium leather is hand-finished to darken the surface textures and add character.

The Bertie Brogue Boot is available in a Oxblood Italian Hair-on with gold thread. On this and the brown Brogue Shoe, the brogue punched detailing and gimping on a hair-on leather create an unusual combination. For the Wingtip Brogue Shoe and Brogued Wing Cap Monk Shoe, one option is Maracaibo which is a faux croc leather print with a deep, almost 3D finish. This premium leather is hand-finished to darken the surface texture and add character. The Twisted Brogue Shoe and Boot use an antiqued calf leather, which has been hand-finished and treated to create a surface pebble effect. The Penny Loafer sits on its own last and offers a subtle contrast of dark brown leather with the Hazelnut Maracaibo croc leather. The 3-Eye Percy Shoe uses a geometric silk sourced from UK material manufacturer Stephen Walters, inspired by vintage patterns and bow ties.
