This dual private and public workplace and event space creates a setting for engagement, opportunity and education for creatives within the Muskegon community and beyond. The structure’s secluded location on Lake Michigan’s shoreline allows the unique opportunity to take advantage of today’s workplace capabilities and explore the benefits of performing remotely. Evidence based research drives a design focused around the natural environment’s ability to enhance creativity and productivity within its users. Mixing in layered organic forms, fresh neutral tones, and concepts of refuge and prospect to create an aesthetic experience that aids in user well-being.

Layered biophilia around the workstations reflects the paradox of the natural habitat and emulates our evolutionary preference for refuge and prospect within nature, thus providing comfotability and satifying a desire for priavcy within an open work environment.
Exterior views remain an important inspirational and transitional element and are accessible by all work points. Color selections are inspired by the warm neutrals of the sandy shore line.

Bold curves mimic the irregularity found within nature, creating elements of surprise and increasing user curiosity. An abundance of rounded corners echo original features from the structure’s modernist era design, accompanied by archeways and delicate detailing to create a refined work atmosphere.

Stemming from Michigan State University’s core practices in agriculture, the design of the student lounge takes inspiration from the repetition, symmetry, and rhythm of a crop field. The use of bright and natural finishes, along with simple architectural features brings a fresh and bold look to this lounge - complementing the nearby addition of the newly built Minskoff Pavilion on MSU’s campus. In whole, bringing unity and liveliness to MSU’s campus.

A forward facing chevron arrow, derived from the College of Social Sciences’ brand, promotes growth and forward movement in its students. The chevron arrow, along with geometric shapes and diagonal lines, are repeated throughout the design to create excitement and designate hierarchy of spaces. Vibrant shades of green provide contrast and help orient users within the environment. This concept aims to balance new and bold design elements with the traditional identity that exists within Berkey Hall.

The design of this pop-up office is focused around simplicity and efficiency. A strategic separation of space and utilization of modular furniture allows for the incorporation of the clients four desired spaces into one footprint: work area, cafe, lounge and conference. Providing an environment that supports the clients needs for flexibility, collaboration, and focus areas.
