“HIDDEN OPENESS COLUMBUS DOWNTOWN COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN Academic Project 2015 Fall Team work/ Team of 2 Location: Columbus, Ohio, US

This project is a comprehensive architectural project which contains multi-family housing, commercial space, and downtown grocery with additional retail. The site was formerly the historic Columbus Ventral Market. The design process engages from schematic design through the detailed development of programmatic spaces, building assemblies, structural and environ

Project Description This program is approximately 200 units +/- of multi-family housing (with amenities to be determined and one parking space per residential unit), 50,000 sq ft commercial space, a 40,000 sq ft downtown grocery (urban big box) with an additional 30,000 sq ft of retail. The main concern about this project is how to engage with different programs and how the site content responses to this project.

‘Hidden Openness’ is the concept of the generation of from. From each direction, an open entrance breaks out from the inside courtyard. However, the views are hidden due to the indirect broken lines, which maintains the peace and mysterious of the inner garden. The scatter entrances and the form of the broken lines active the space and create a dynamic space. The purpose is to create the quality of the refreshed inside courtyard space and the harmony outside connections.

“Education for Future” Hekima Jesuit University Master Plan Design

‘‘IPHONE’’ APP STORE NO WHERE ON IPHONE BASIC APPS CUSTMIZING

‘‘UNIVERSITY’’ UNIVERSITY CORE OPEN SPACE + CIRCULATION PERMENENT SPACE FLEXIBLE FUNCTIONAL SPACE

The intention of this project id to build a state-of-the-art, 21st century campus, the best in Africa. Rather than duplicating a contemporary European or American university - much less a western university of the 19th or 20th century - we hope to leapfrog those models burdened with legacy designs and structures. The concept of this projects is from the iPhone that represents the concept of education for future and the organization of the university. Each hexagon element of the university is analogous to one application of iPhone. Depending on the demands and the scale of different departments and dormitories, those elements can be duplicated and connected into one system. The master plan of the university contains its flexibility and can be customized. It grows by itself.

SITE PLAN STRATEGY

AMENITIES SAVANNA

SAVANNA

HOUSING

The main strategy of the site plan is that the savanna comes into the academic area to be the landscape and open space in university, and also live space for future development. The amenity areas which includes the professors’ housing and other servicing programs are placed at the northern part of the site. The Student’s housing area including amenities extends from the southern part to the academic area in middle. The intersection area of which those two major parts meet becomes the core of the university which includes the infrastructure programs such as the library, the recreation center, the student union and some other programs. All the schools are at the north of the core areas and the west part is as the reserved space for further development.

ACADEMIC AREA HOUSING AREA UNIVERSITY CENTER AMENITIES AREA PARK

EDUCATION SCHOOL This is the plan of Education School and the related housing area, which represents one method to organize those functional ‘applications’ of university. The school is composed by those hexagons of the lobby, the lecture rooms, the offices, the study rooms and the labs, the library and other functional elements in the order of public to private. The housing hexagons share green space in-between, and also sports facilities are attached to housing units.

School of Education

Housing Area

HOUSING UNIT The concept of housing unit is ‘sharing’. The goal is to enhance the relationship between students and prompt them as families. In one housing unit, each of two share one green space and all the rooms on the same floor share the outdoor green space in middle.

Housing Unit

DINING UNIT The concept of the dining unit is to active the kitchen and makes it to be the main character in the dining hall. And also in order to provide a more relaxing time for students, the roof as a green garden comes into the space.

This is the view of the lobby. As an open public free space, the form transforms from the normal hexagon unit, but with an irregularity shape of roof of which represents as an iconic gathering space.

Academic Project

2013 Spring Individual work Location: Yunnan,China This project is a scenic resort hotel design. The site is located on a tourist island of Yunnan, China. There are waterfall, hills and cherry orchard around. The big concept comes from Mobius strip which the whole building form is an organic whole through self-rotation. Therefore, the ground greening and roof garden will be able to realize the connection, people can have a free walk on the whole site.

“Iconic Museum” VS “Museum With No Face” The Museum of European History

?

“GOOD ENOUGH”

Academic Project 2016 Fall Team work/ Team of 2 Location: Berlin, German

“What is good enough for a museum?” All those famous museum can be generalized as an icon, while this project is an anti-iconic museum. All the programs are wrapping by a wall which has an opening on each orientation, which creates an identical view. And also each opening leads to an axis to each area - the gallery, the archive, the theater and the forest.

“Museum With No Face - Wall Museum The museum is divided into five parts depending on differential programs - the gallery, the archive, the theater, the forest and the void hidden courtyard. Each part is developed to its identical form. Section wise, on the ground level, all the five parts are separated from each other while all the underground part are connected as a continuous open space. It is a museum with no face but appears to be many identical views.

The section model, on one side, cuts through the gallery area, the courtyard and the cafe with a store on the second floor. On the other side, it goes through mostly the archive area and also the gallery bar. Section wise. All these programs isolate from each other on the ground level, but on the underground level, they all involve and have access with each other. People can walk out from the gallery to the courtyard and to the forest. Archive can be seen from the gallery and the courtyard.

ART CENTER OF DENISON UNIVERSITY

Academic Project 2013 Spring Individual Work Location: Dayton, Ohio, US This project is the art center for Denison University. The site is on the gentle slope of a hill, which is in the center of the campus. The main programs are a theater, a black box, galleries, a shop and a cafe.

VIEW FROM THE HILL

CONCEPT The main idea of this art center is the architecture as a landscape piece occupying the hill and interacting with it. Also as the center space of the campus, it also acts as a circulation core connecting the lower and the upper level of the hill. The theater and the black box as the main characters of the building sit on at the opposite’s angles, which stretch the inner space.
