Southbank, London

Cultural and Recreational

Situated at the heart of Southbank, London, the Photography Institute emerges as a nexus for the convergence of diverse media and artistic expressions. By revitalizing open spaces to accommodate galleries and individuals, it endeavours to foster closer bonds within the artistic community. This initiative inherently instigates a shift towards a more contemplative lifestyle in Southbank.

Nestled within Southbank’s creative epicentre, the Photography Institute stands as a bastion of artistic inspiration. A dynamic hub for aspiring professionals as photographers to cultivate their vision and technical expertise.

Circulation Strategy

The main access point is on the Queen’s Walk, another access is closer to the Upper Ground Street. Providing two accesses for each building.

Internal circulation within the institute is meticulously orchestrated, with a primary route designed to guide visitors through the exhibition spaces, allowing them to meander and absorb a profound comprehension of photography.

Spatial Plan

This diagram forms in the earlier design stage of exploration. Integrating the dominant site analysis and focus to the programme. Every spatial unit is imbued with distinct purpose and emphasis, with a central focal point on connectivity and permeability.

Interior Space

An open-space atrium is placed in the central part of the building. Two public staircases can be accessed from both entrances, leading the visitors to begin their journey along with exhibitions.

All four exhibition spaces have direct access view toward the gathering space. More photography pieces can be displayed around the walls, with multifunctional exhibition space.

Functional Space

Various exhibition spaces are required in the project, with multiple use of spaces.

Lighting Strategy

A trapezoidal zinc glazing is placed above the atrium. Photographs can be viewed with natural light.

Spatial Arrangement

Divide the structure into two distinct buildings, each with specialized functions. Studio and workshop spaces are closer to the Upper Ground street, more limited public access. The main building accommodates museum archives and camera collections.

Regeneration

This site emphasises the connection towards the Bernie Spain Garden and the North. Introducing more greenery and urban features to enrich the district.

Form Arrangement

Establishing a renewed perpendicular route in relation to the River Thames to increase the connection with the residential zone.

South building separates from the main exhibition space, for professional users.

The initial three levels boast a generous 6-meter height, affording greater adaptability for programmatic functions.

Maroon zinc cladding provides additional natural light with opening extending from the main form. Various forms of openings are adjusted with the activity behind.

Illustrated Views

The programme aims to establish a new photography institute, to enrich people with the photography industry. This also helps introduce more opportunities for local artists and builds Southbank into a more integrated art hub.

Two wooden structural chambers inbue the space with a warmth, and inviting ambiance beckoning individuals to partake in democratic principles. Based on the embodiment of democratic values; transparency, openess and participation. In this project, the public seating area is above the elected assembly members. Above the chamber, a rounded opening situates in the centre of the building, allowing natural light and ventilation entre the building.

Initial Concept

The southern façade incorporates a curtain wall, allowing ample natural light to filter in. An openly visible staircase guides the public walk up the building. There’s a distinct demarcation between the paths for Members of Parliament and the general public. Each route leads to designated destinations on separate floors, effectively preventing public access to staff workspaces.

Most of the pedestrian routes are along from Royal Festival Hall with regularly outdoor event that gathers people. The primary entrances extend the utilization of the East-West axis. People can directly walk through the path between National Theatre and the previous IBM office to the main entrance. The southern façade of the building houses the parliamentary control area. A distinct drop-off point caters to the MPs and visitors, set apart from the remaining occupants.
