This was an exciting year for the Zoological Society of Milwaukee. After four years of planning and quiet fundraising, we publicly announced our Window to the Wild Capital Campaign. This first phase of the campaign seeks to raise $25 million toward Adventure Africa, a dramatic reimagining of the elephant, hippo, rhino and African hoofstock exhibits at the Zoo. This will be the biggest change to the Zoo since it opened in its current location in 1961, transforming 25% of the developed footprint of the Zoo. This campaign is possible because of the strong partnership between Milwaukee County and the Zoological Society, which historically have shared the cost of major projects. I’m proud to say that we have already raised $17.7 million at the end of fiscal year 2018 toward our goal, and we look forward to increasing that amount in 2019 and beyond. The capital campaign is just one way we fulfill our mission to conserve wildlife and endangered species, educate people about the importance of wildlife and the environment, and support the Milwaukee County Zoo. Another example is our Bonobo & Congo Biodiversity Initiative, which studies bonobos and forest elephants in the Democratic Republic of Congo and helps ensure the survival of these endangered animals. Dr. Gay Reinartz, our conservation coordinator, was recognized in 2018 for her work in the Congo as a Milwaukee Business Journal Woman of Influence. Our Education Department had nearly 300,000 encounters with children and adults this year through Zoo Classes and Camps, Kohl’s Wild Theater and other programming, including its groundbreaking Animal Connections Continuum. Finally, the Zoological Society supported the Zoo in its successful application for another five-year accreditation with the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. The accreditation committee was especially complimentary of our collaboration with the Zoo. We couldn’t accomplish any of this without our dedicated donors, members and volunteers. We can’t wait for you to see the results of our campaign. Thank you for your support during this exciting time.
Jodi Gibson President & CEO Zoological Society of Milwaukee

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee works to protect bonobos and other wildlife in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through the Bonobo & Congo Biodiversity Initiative (BCBI). It also coordinates the Bonobo Species Survival Plan® to keep the bonobo population in North America stable and healthy.
• Supported activities to study and protect endangered species, including bonobos and forest elephants. • Analyzed more than 500,000 data points in wildlife surveys of targeted areas of the Salonga National Park. • Continued to support five village schools and two adult literacy classes to help villagers near the Salonga National Park. This support helps BCBI maintain positive relationships with local communities while building their capacity to make informed conservation decisions. Providing educational opportunities to people living near Salonga is critical for the park’s long-term conservation success. Photo captured by camera trap in the Salonga National Park

In 2018, Dr. Gay Reinartz, the Zoological Society’s conservation coordinator and BCBI director, was named a Woman of Influence by the Milwaukee Business Journal in the category of “inspiration.” The Business Journal emphasized her dedication to BCBI, noting that she spends six months of the year in the Democratic Republic of Congo and helped the Milwaukee County Zoo establish a captive bonobo population. We are proud and excited that Reinartz received this much-deserved recognition. Photo courtesy of Scott Paulus, Milwaukee Business Journal

Iguana Conservation:
Zoo staff members Dawn Fleuchaus, Stacy Whitaker and Joan Maurer travel to the Caribbean to study, monitor and care for the critically endangered Jamaican iguana and endangered Grand Cayman blue iguana. Their work addresses threats facing these iguanas, including feral cats and dogs and illness transmitted by non-native species. Zoo staff participates in iguana health checks, assessing the wild population, head-starting iguana hatchlings, and adding artificial nest sites and predator exclusion fencing. As a result of this work, the global populations of both species have grown. giraffe conservation:
The Zoological Society supported Zoo staff member Joan Stasica’s return to Namibia. While there, she continued working with Giraffe Conservation Foundation researchers to document giraffe movement patterns, preferred food items, reproductive success and herd composition. The team also collected DNA samples to determine relatedness and social patterns for the giraffes encountered.
Joint meeting of the Bonobo SSP & EEP:
The Bonobo Species Survival Plan (SSP) and European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) held a combined planning meeting in April 2018 in Karlsruhe, Germany. Society support allowed the Zoo’s senior staff veterinarian and curator of primates and small mammals, who are members of the Bonobo SSP Steering Committee, to travel to Germany and participate in the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss bonobo health, welfare and future planning. Auriana GillilandLloyd, Society conservation assistant, traveled to the meeting on behalf of the Bonobo SSP coordinator, Dr. Gay Reinartz. Gilliland-Lloyd also represented the Society’s Bonobo & Congo Biodiversity Initiative and gave a presentation on the 20-year history of BCBI to the group.

Milwaukee Ape Heart Project:

Heart disease is a common problem in captive great apes, and Milwaukee County Zoo veterinarians work closely with local cardiologists and sonographers to study this issue in the Zoo’s bonobos, orangutans and gorillas. Zoo staff continued investigating the feasibility of using finger cuffs to measure blood pressure in different ape species. In bonobos, finger blood pressure measurement is performed routinely and guides optimization of anti-hypertensive medication doses in this endangered species with the goal of slowing the progression of heart disease.
Migratory Bird Projects:
Since 2001, 183 species of birds, including 44 species of concern in Wisconsin, have been documented on Zoo grounds. Funds from the Society and the Zoo were again used to purchase products to prevent bird glass strikes in several buildings. Staff and volunteers continued monitoring wild bird feeding stations and nest boxes used by Wisconsin native birds such as house wrens and black-capped chickadees.

Support of AZA Avian programs: Last year, funds were sent in support of the Avian Scientific Advisory Group and the Penguin Taxon Advisory Group. These animal programs of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums support conservation projects, provide strategic planning and support for avian animal programs, and host bird husbandry workshops to enhance reproduction of birds in managed care, a crucial step in successful reintroduction programs.

The Zoological Society’s Education Department had nearly 300,000 encounters with children and adults in 2018 through Zoo Classes and Camps, Kohl’s Wild Theater, school programs, community partnerships and other endeavors. It boasts the largest zoo-based theater program in the country, Kohl’s Wild Theater, and one of the country’s largest zoo summer camp programs.
• Completed a second year of the Animal Connections Continuum, a three-year program to engage second- to fourth-grade students in experiences about animals and people’s empathy toward animals. Early evaluations have shown a significant impact on empathy development in participating children. • Introduced a traveling Kohl’s Wild Theater musical called “The Monarch – A Space Adventure” that teaches children about the conditions necessary for life and the many ways animals have adapted to live in extreme conditions. A new at-Zoo show called “#Pets!” also made its debut, explaining the importance of differentiating between good information and bad information on the Internet, particularly when it comes to animals. • Helped send 11 kids to Zoo Camp through the Bernard J. Peck Memorial Scholarship Fund. • Hired Julia Petersen as the Society’s first senior director of programs, overseeing education and Zoo Pride, the Society’s volunteer program. Additionally, she will help support our conservation program as needed. Petersen has many years of experience directing and implementing strategy and programs in mission-based organizations. Inclusive programming The Zoological Society is committed to inclusive programming, serving children of many different backgrounds and needs. Here are some of our programs that serve schools in areas of high economic need: • Animal Ambassador: Teaches students in grades 2-5 in underserved, urban areas about animals and the natural world. • Animal Connections Continuum: Fosters empathy for animals, nature and other humans in participating students in grades 2-4. • Nature Play: Encourages kindergarteners and their adults to connect with nature through exploration and free play at the Zoo’s outdoor nature site. • MPS Extended Learning: Provides adults and young children the opportunity to connect with nature and one another during free Zoo Classes with engaging, age-appropriate activities. The Zoo’s Nature Play area, created with grant support from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums and the Children & Nature Network, is in the woods near Macaque Island. Photo by Bob Wickland.

The Zoological Society supports the Milwaukee County Zoo through cash and in-kind services. Half of all revenue raised by the Zoo Pass membership program goes to the Zoo in unrestricted funds to support the day-to-day operations of the Zoo. The Society provides additional funds through its procurement of sponsorships for Zoo attractions and events. The Society also provides graphic design, information technology and direct project support and operates Zoo Pride, a volunteer program that serves the Society and Zoo.
• Provided $9.6 million to the Zoo in cash and in-kind support, plus $1.9 million in direct project costs. • Supported the Zoo in its successful application for another five-year accreditation with the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Accreditation shows the Zoo’s commitment to animal management and welfare, safety, conservation and education. • Served nearly 50,000 member households in our Zoo Pass program. The program is ranked number four nationally among membership organizations through a study by the Morey Group. • Celebrated completion of a new outdoor chute connected to the primates building that will allow colobus monkeys to go outside for the first time ever. The project was funded through the Society’s 2016 Annual Appeal. • Gratefully acknowledged more than 51,000 hours of service to the Zoo and Society from our 530 active Zoo Pride volunteers. • Created more than 600 print and sign projects, including the signs for the new Otter Passage at the Zoo’s West Entrance. The Society was awarded first place for the otter graphics from the Wisconsin Sign Association in the category of direction/wayfinding signs. Photo by Paul Ruffolo
• Continued to fund two veterinary residency programs in the Zoo’s Animal Health Center.

In May 2018, the Zoological Society and Milwaukee County Zoo announced the Window to the Wild Capital Campaign, which will transform the Zoo over the next 25 years. The first phase of the campaign supports Adventure Africa, which includes new exhibits for the elephants, hippos, rhinos and African hoofstock. By the end of fiscal year 2018, the Society had raised $17.7 million toward its $25 million goal, including money raised during the quiet period of the campaign.
