master dissertation Project_Fifth Year of Studies The Urban Condition: MINIATURE DEMOCRACY AS A MEDIATOR DEAN’S CHOICE AWARD 2015/16. Menthor: drs. arch. Tomas Ooms 2015-2016.
Through time industry was rapidly developing therefore implying necessity for immediate accomodation for its work force. Large number of small, low cost worker houses sprought around the industrial facilities supplying the basic needs for its inhabitants and contributing to creating an unique urban condition. Nowadays, it is necessary to perceive and understand consequences that this kind of spawl has on everyday life of XXI century inhabitant of the area. The tense relation between work and everyday life of a dweller is a topic which can be located in Merksem neighbourhod and to be re-questioned. Can historical heritage serve as a mediator between living and working? Can a specific interactive learning environment serve as a social mediator between working and everyday life? Can a democratic, public space, achieved through miniature interventions, serve as a physical mediator between colliding forces of working and living? How big is actually the power of miniature? miniature concept diagram

REFUGEE SETTLEMENT 13
Academic Project_Fourth Year of Studies Zero-impact building : Shadow cities With Monica Delgado, Dimitrios Triantafyllou, Giulia Dentice and Dimitrios Antoniou Menthor: arch. Ignaas Back 2015.
The idea of the project was to provide adequate living conditions to people in great need for temporary settlement, as a response for growing refugee crisis. Abandoned highrise building, in Piraerus Port, which is one of the milestones in the refugee route, proved to be sustainable and logical proposal for site. This way, the project is considering the reuse of existing building which could respond in most efficient and cost-free way to this existential problem. The project was primarily based on recognizing and applying a basic system which responds to minimal necessities and requirements of an inhabitant. This implied use of prefabricated units to minimize the costs of construction and allow flexibility and possibility of implementation in other facilities of this type. Use of the existing skeleton and envelope of the building, among other concepts, lead to achieving zero build impact. Apart from that, idea of integration of multiple activities (urban garden, gym, laundry, childcare, restaurant, workshops etc.) contributed in the development of a building with an autonomous system. At the same time, project was focused on incorporation of the building within a broader migration program, thus allowing immigrant population to be freely allocated in the rest of Europe.

The choosen site is distinguished by large ‘unurbanised’ green field area in the middle of dense urban fabric. While in it’s surroundings a person can get a feeling of being in nature, not in overcrowded city yelling for expansion. It presents a quiet area, place to rest and enjoy all small things which nature can offer. Clean air, bird sounds, horses, untrimmed trees and the view. It’s location is on the verge of city presence, but at the same time it presents one small, scattered piece of green’finger’ of Antwerp which makes it suitable for development in concept of dealing with border between city and green area. This is the place where city pressure and nature counterpressure are in the highest peak, the most sensitive area, next one to be threatened by city obtrudion. Concept is based on developing a wall, which will work as a steady, physical border which would absorb all the densification pressure coming from the city and allow existing green areas to develop further more, preserve their essential quality and share with the inhabitants of the wall.

THE WALL 19
Academic Project_Fourth Year of Studies Design Studio - Project 5: Urban Spaces of Ambivalence, Designing future-proof neighbourhoods for Antwerp, Belgium Menthor: drs. arch. Johan Neilsen 2014.
The project idea was to create a private oasis where residents could still make out the movements of people and traffic beyond the walls. “The serene soundless scenery of the passing cars and trams imparts richness to life in the house.” A immense field as a courtyard is glimpsed through the shimmering glass/corrten facade and it presents perfect example of part of building being intermediary place between the city and the nature. At the same time, this can be translated into interior level - these places can be seen as intermediaries between intimacy of appartments and semi-exposure of following corridors. In project perspective, these places can designed as restricted public areas, which allow non-residents of The Wall to enjoy it’s qualities and have a different sence of endless untouched fields in front of them. The areas offer the visitor a two-way perspective shimmering scenery of the city and colorful view on the nature. Placed on first and second floor, these areas are managed periodically and work separately form the residential part of the building. They are multifunctional spaces which can be transformed into open cinema projections, small open theathre stages, cafes, small conferences or just sitting areas where individuals can enjoy the view.

“Architecture (is) a theatre stage setting where leading actors are people, and to dramatically direct the dialogue between these people and space is the technique of designing. Kisho Kurokawa In project perspective,at first glance, whole building can be considered as one frame of a film, one caption in whole. But when you take a step back, and consider building surroundings as well, from human perspective, the building is much more than one frame. It is consisted of many more smaller frames, which allow higher perception quality to the passer-by.

HOUSE OF SHADES 23
Academic Project_Fourth Year of Studies Design Studio - Project 5: Urban Spaces of Ambivalence, one-week assignment, small scale intervention Menthor: drs. arch. Johan Neilsen 2014.
The site is located in the area which has scattered remains of green finger lob inside the block. The idea was to investigate how that ‘entrapped by urban’ greenery can work and achieve same quality as greenery in green field. In manner of expressing greenery and giving it more purpose in functioning of the house, idea is to avoid traditional backyard-frontyard relation and create a mixed yard inside the plot which will be working as an intermediary area which will regulate intimacy levels of both dwellings. Atrium garden was created in between the dwellings, supported by large collective living-cooking space which is shared by both families. This created a very simple but strong communication diagram - residents of both dwellings need to pass through the atrium garden and collective space in order to approach their own dwellings. The house itself has different shades of intimacy how you go through it. On the street level, instead of garage, there is large open kitchen area which allows gathering on street level, approachable to everyone and presents the most exposed part of the house. Level of intimacy is in it’s lowest - white. After the narrow entrance zone, the visitor enters the atrium garden zone, which, as before mentioned, works as an intermediary between identity of two dwellings. This area is open for guests and residents only, where residents allow guests to enter more personal place and make the intimacy shade a bit stronger - grey. On the second floor, both dwellings are clearly separated and function individually. Their intimacy shade is dark grey as they move away form the atrium garden on first floor. Additional garden areas are added, so that residents can have their own intimate gardens separated from the rest of the building. These are areas of the highest intimacy -black.

The task was to design contemporary structure which can satifsy living and working needs of approximately 100 students. We were challenged to investigate the existing typology of student dormitories and to distinguish the specifities of the way students live, work, cohabit. The characteristics of the site (near high-frequency traffic street, terrain on slope, city periphery, at the end of forest, with unique viewpoints) with specific program lead to creating dynamic ring structure with circular part underground. Whole structure is designed as one big sharing hub, which with is specific volume is directing its inhabitants towards interaction. The ring-shaped roof top is designed as a long promenade acessible to visitors, neighbours and residents offering spectacular views on Danube river. The first level floor is ‘floating’ on slim pillars and it is hosting dormitories, canteen, child care, laundry, administration and multiple shared spaces. From them, two light, glass corridors are leading to the core - academic hub. Two-storey, circular, underground volume is designed as a place of intellectual exchange with libraries, study rooms, computers, reading rooms, conference and lecture spaces. Beneath that, 70 parking places, technical and maintenance rooms are situated and accessible from secondary street.

IT PAVILLION 29
Academic Project_Second Year of Studies Design Studio - Project 2: Architecture Construction With Jana Filipovic and Aleksandar Stamenkovic Menthor: prof. Aleksandra Krstic Furundzic, ass.prof. Natasa Cukovic Ignjatovic 2013
The project task was to design IT Pavilion which would contain both office and exhibition space. Located near Delta City Shopping mall in New Belgrade, on large green field, the pavilion offers new public space just beneath its volume. Large topped amphitheater descends under ground level and represents new space for pubic exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations concerning IT technologies allowing everyone to participate. The amphitheatre extends itself in interior, so it presents the link between nature and architecture. The part of the glass facade where amphitheatre ‘enters’ the building, can slide into its boxes allowing inside and outside boundary to disappear. The main pavilion entrance is emphasized with ramp and mild stairs covered with glass panels, so that everyone is able to enter. All maintaining space is integrated in a maintenance block and it contains sanitary rooms, doorman room, IT room, air handling room etc. On the upper floor, organization in conducted as open-space working zone with two conference rooms, executive room, lounge space, team work space, open terrace, sanitary rooms and gym for staff. Considering form of the pavilion, the idea was to create interesting but not too intrusive form. Clear divide between working, exhibition and maintenance sections is demonstrated through facade treatment (maintenance - concrete; exhibition and work - glass). In order to provide more comfort and privacy for staff working on the upper floor, the pavilion is surrounded with sun-shading system which provides sun protection.

MAIN BUS STATION
31
competition project _Competition for urban and architectural solutions of Main Bus station Novi Beograd and commercial-business complex in Block 42, New Belgrade, Serbia With Arch. Ilja Mikitisin, Igor Mikitisin and Filip Susic 2014.
First impression of all passengers when entering Belgrade by bus is the appearance of the bus terminals. Therefore, the main intention of proposed concept is that the arrival terminals are clearly perceiveable and attractive for all users, both arriving or waiting. The second intention is that the movement axes of pedestrians and vehicles (both buses and cars going to garage area) do not interlude. These intentions shaped the bus station in a way that, station building would be positioned above arrival and departing terminals, therefore releasing ground floor space for continuous flow of buses. Attractivity and sustainability of the building is additionally affirmed by numerous comercial activities on first floor of the station building, which is visually connected with two-storey gallery. Management, administration, following services and agencies are proposed on the second floor. It is important to outline that the position of the building is defined in reference to the previously planned metro station, therefore allowing fast and easy access to all platforms.

MAIN RAILWAY STATION 35
competition project _Competition for urban and architectural solutions of Main Railway station Novi Beograd and commercial-business complex in Block 42, New Belgrade, Serbia With Arch. Ilja Mikitisin, Igor Mikitisin and Filip Susic 2014.
Same as with Bus Station, the reference was made on the impression of the passenger coming abroad and the importance of the appearance of the building and terminals. The greatest influence on suggested proposal had the existing position of the train terminals of existing train station at the height of 7.70m. Therefore, the newly proposed station building is formed at 21m height from ground floor, because of necessary and regulation-demanded height above the terminal of 12m. Height difference between groundfloor and station lobby is overcomed by vestibule with attractive staircase and system of escalators. Complementary to this proposal are the commercial activities on floors which connect ground floor and lobby of the station building. Additionally, this position of the building served for the clear differentiation of flow axes between pedestrians, station users, giving them all equal opportunity for acces to building and terminals. As these kinds of buildings present of the technologically most demanding architectural designs it is necessary to provide all necessary elements of reneweable energy sources - heat pumps, solar panels, water collection etc. in order of achieving the most efficient and sustainable design.

competition project _Preserving Pyramiden 120 hours architecture competition for students With Dimitrios Antoniou and Xiaoyu Xu PYRAMIDEN, Billefjorden, Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard, Norway 2015.
The identity of Pyramiden has always been routed in its marvellous natural values, compared to which human settlements are no more than mere fraction in the dimension of time and space. Living in the settings of extreme ice-scape and coldness, one cannot help but wonder who he is, what he has been doing, and what lays in front of him. In face of mighty nature, and the once glorious buildings, it is time to look beyond the horizon and strike the ultimate questions. In a sense, it is a place of eternity. Nonetheless, humans, together with their traces, are mortal. What is living at this moment becomes history in the next. In other words, it is not lives that we preserve, but deaths. The death of coalmine town, the death of whales, the devastating death of the 23 workers, all join the cicle of life and death. Thus we proposed a global cemetery as a new layer of identity for Pyramiden, in a manner of responding to the threat of an exploding population rate. Pyramiden has a dominating west-east axes featuring the Lenin statue and a long plaza. We consider this area the most monumental in this town, representing the strong identity of the Russian mining period. With a modular system to situate the coffins, the new cemetery extends along the slope, capable to extend in line with the town axis. Relatives can visit the cemetery by walking alon g the corridors, in framed views of the mountains at the other side of the fjord. Severe coldness will keep everything impair slowly.

FIRST PRIZE competition project Competition for building welcoming a nursery and two workshops with the study of housing construction With MangerNielsen Architects + Atelier De Visscher & Vincentelli Rue Gray - Rue Kerckx, Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium 2016.
The plot inherited for the new nursery in Ixelles is reflected in specific urban condition: strained relationship between the different limits, different neighbours; highly variable templates; steep slope; specific orientation and delicate natural light; two bordering streets which create different urban characters. The approach we propose through this project is both on the scale of the urban: the city, the neighborhood, the Street; and wide experience scale: the child, the light, the inhabitant. The impact of the project is therefore in the new physiognomy of Gray Street. Currently perceived as a “Gray Canyon, lifeless with almost continuous cornice heights, we suggest intervention in this street with a truly contemporary and strong proposal in terms of human regeneration, but also in terms of templates; one not without the other. New volumes will rise up, offering new fronts perpendicular to the street and offering a lively and bright face in the outlook of the street. This will allow the building to blend naturally into context while offering engagement. The communal areas of the project, visible from the street, will complement the series of public spaces and groups that complement Gray Street.
