How injuries can actually improve your performance Getting hurt or injured is never on anyone’s to-do list. In fact, many people, when injured, can become depressed at the thought of not training, working out or engaging in their chosen sport. However, if you are on the injured list, you might want to rest up while reading the following information about how injuries can actually improve your performance.
You should try to be as positive as you can. Obviously, you probably aren’t going to be a complete ray of sunshine during your recuperation period, but try to take a step back and look at the entire picture — you’ll probably find there’s a silver lining there somewhere. Take a look at some of the positive aspects:

Rest is a Good Thing You will get to rest — Rest is a critical component of any training routine. Your body will force the issue if you don’t let it rest enough. Time off/rest is an essential part of your overall long-term health, along with performance benefits. Rest/recovery stages provide time for your body to catch up to the rigors you’ve been putting it through. Injuries can give you additional insight on your body, to better move forward with more appropriate training in the future.
Look At Your Injury Constructively You are probably being forced to take that needed rest, and you should frame this time positively, as something that will actually be a positive influence on your future training. You can also examine parts of your training that might need some work, such as nutritional and mental aspects. Look at it as a “system reboot” where you have to take down the system, and reset it to let it repair and restructure into a better performing one. Regaining your fitness level is possible through time and consistency; however, replenishing your body isn’t going to happen without proper rest.
Rely on Your Support System You are probably surrounded by people who are training in the same sport as you. Don’t become a hermit just because you are injured and can’t train at your highest level. You can even consider reaching out to a sports psychologist and/or a nutritionist. You might find that these professionals can give you training knowledge and tips that you may have ignored or overlooked in the past.

Rest Your Mind Your injury can also affect you mentally. As you rest to give your injury time to heal, let your mind have a break as well. Read more, socialize with friends, stay out a bit later than usual. You may find that when you return to your training routine, your mind will be refreshed, more focused and better prepared to help you back to your peak physical level.
Don’t Rush Back to Training You may find that as your injury heals, you may be becoming impatient to return to your routine. This can be your worst enemy — thinking that you are all better and can return. If you return to early, there’s a good chance you could re-injure yourself or cause complications. Build up in small steps to return to your regular routine. And, this can also help you gain a sense of patience and new perspectives on your training.
