Food system has a huge impact on the environment. Every proceduce of the food supply chain, from primary production to transportation, processing, packaging and distribution, can have a potential impact on the environment. Impacts include the use of scarce resources, loss of biodiversity, solid waste generation, land degradation, waterway pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. In Victoria, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that food accounts for about one third of our personal ecological footprint, which has exceeds our combination of transportation and household energy consumption.
