HOOKS

THE CHALLENGE Lifeboats continue to save the lives of many seafarers and their passengers, and are the safest mean of escape from a vessel in distress. Still, the industry and IMO have recognized that lifeboat operation and drills continue to be a safety concern due to lack of maintenance and familiarization with the release systems. To improve this situation, and increase safety at sea, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 2011 adopted new regulations (MSC.1/Circ.1392) regarding lifeboat release and retrieval systems. The objective was to reduce safety risks by standardizing the design criteria, simplifying the maintenance requirements and improving the operation systems. The new guidelines define a standard for the design, production and operation of the vital release hook systems with which all vessels now must comply.

Compliant systems: To comply with MSC.1392/Circ.1 a hook system has to be designed to meet new requirements concerning the stability of the hook system and the locking arrangement, as well as being manufactured in corrosion resistant material. The new LSA Code and MSC. 81(70) states the following test criteria: 30 kg release force 45o cam rotation Corrosion resistant material Durability test (50 on-load releases) No force on the release cables Cyclic loading test

THE CLOCK IS TICKING MSC.1/Circ.1392 states that every lifeboat hook system must be compliant no later than by the first scheduled dry-docking after 1 July 2014 – and no later than 1 July 2019. This means that you only have one attempt and a limited time period to get the job done. What is your deadline?
