Since the theme of the Bergen International Wood Festival this year was “Green Transition”, our installation is about the multi-sensory feeling of the forest. Visitors go through branches with the feeling of flexibility, but still resistance, and they experience the auditory aspect of the forest as the breeze moves the leaves of trees. The size of the structure is 3 x 6 meters and 3,5 m in height. The installation contains 465 pieces of 48x48x48 mm hanging wood cubes. As the hanging wood cubes flow with the fresh breeze, they are arranged to wrap up visitors inside like tricklets in fresh air. The wind slaps the cubes to each other imitating the sounds of nature. The visitors are not only allowed, but encouraged to interact with the installation. The whole experience in this tiny space is half artificial and half natural.

The installation was designed and built by the three of us during the one week festival and it will stay on site at Store Lungegårdsvannet for the coming year.

Turku, Finland 24 000 m2 2011 - 2014

Logomo, the old workshop of the railways in Turku, has been turned into a new concert hall and exhibition centre to serve as the main venue for the 2011 European Capital of Culture events held in the city. With its moving audience it the main hall can house approximately 3500 people. After designing the facilities for the Capital of Culture events, we started designing the office wing of the building and a new temporary theatre hall for the Turku city theatre. My work on this project included permission plans, work drawings, construction detailing, technical drawings (including furniture design), modelling.

ANIMAL SHELTER

ANIMAL

SHELTER

diplomawork location: size: project year:

Budapest, Hungary 1 700 m2 2011

My diploma project was a new building for one of the animal shelters in Budapest. The organization that runs the animal shelter often lack the funds for heating and maintenance, which creates uncomfortable, sometimes unhealthy environments for the animals living there and also the visitors, future pet owners. I thought it would be essential to design a low-energy building, which would decrease the operating expenses, while creating a space that is hygienic and beneficial for the inhabitants of the shelter. I designed a complex, which can utilize solar energy for heating and cooling with OM solar system, for ventilation through solar chimneys and for producing hot water using solar panels. The animals are placed in multiple buildings in order to get the most possible sunshine on their roof and to prevent the spread of diseases. The solar chimneys give the characteristic shape of the buildings. The metal cladding serves as a heated surface for the OM solar system.

LABS FOR LEARNERS

LABS FOR LEARNERS school as a service location: size: project year:

Otaniemi, Finland 3000 m2 2016

Aalto University has some underused facilities in the Otaniemi campus area and also a willingness to share its spaces with high schoolers, soon to be university students. This unique opportunity gave us a chance to reexamine what school means to the students and teachers nowadays. We organized workshops with the container school currently located in the campus area. The co-school project is ongoing: the new students are moving in to the campus in September 2016. This project has been organized in collaboration with the Royal College of Arts Service Design Department and Espoo City.

TRADITIONAL SCHOOL TION OVA REN

Many schools suffer from indoor air problems and are in desperate need of renovation in the Helsinki metropolitan area. For the duration of the renovation the students and staff have to be relocated to an other building, or in many cases to containers in the courtyard. Housing these people temporarily gives a constant headache to city officials. A possible solution is to appoint a building which would serve as a permanently temporary school, where different schools can be relocated every 2 or 3 years while their own building is undergoing renovation.

for Down the Stairs to a Shady Grove size: material: project year:

1000 x 1000 x 480 mm thermowood (pine) 2015

For this outdoor bench I decided to take a playful approach in my design. I wanted to design a bench that looks different if one person sits on it than if two or more people. I played with balance to achieve this goal. Rocking bench was exhibited in the Museum of Finnish Architecture between June and August, 2015.
