Analog Z / Free ebook 01 „Film photography as respons – as antithesis – to the enoromous, digital flood of pictures we see ourself faced with online.“ I’ve shot my last roll of films over 10 years ago and i’ve never developed my own pictures on a regular base before. Still the desire to work completely analogue emerged parallel to my passion for streetphotography. First I was discouraged by the effort (both material- and time-wise) and delayed the experiments for quite some time. But now – after more then 10‘000 digital pictures within 12 months – i felt like buying some film cameras. In street photography there is no orchestration and no second chances. It’s all about the moment – the one magic milisecond. But with plenty of sophisticated auto-modes and burst shooting and digital picture editing our gear is perfectly designed to help us getting „the good picture“. But what ist he good picture? In sportsphtography it is crucial to not miss the decisive hit. It’s completely fine to use all the help we can get to reliably transport information. In streetphotography (and any other genre of photography which is closer to art then to documentation) it can lead to arbitrary and exchangeable pictures and finally to a dense plethora of pictures perceived as noise. When the raw expressiveness of a moment of life and the value of one image is relevant – film seems like one logic consequence. The focus will be shifted from production to design. It’s about composing an image and not collecting captures. I have to anticipate. I take less pictures but i do it conciously. In irregular intervals i will collect my best scans and compile them to small photographic ebooks because I want to re-establish the value of images for my workflow. They should not go to the oblivion of social media but should be compiled and edited to form a personal portrait of my surrounding.
