AFC CLUBHOUSE COMPLETED On 24 September 2020, keys to the new clubhouse were officially handed over to the Amsterdam Football Club. Now it’s just a matter of rigging up the interior before members can inaugurate their new home. After years of puzzling, on 4 July 2019 building contractors Sallandse Wegenbouw and HSB Bouw finally got the green light to break ground. Relocation of the football pitches closer to the A10 motorway started immediately after that to make room for the new Ravel neighbourhood being developed between 2022 and 2035. Now that AFC has the keys, they’re getting to work inside. Locker rooms and showers are on the ground floor, while one floor up will be the clubhouse and society were members can get together, have a snack and of course enjoy a great view of the pitches. The club is scheduled to move before the end of this year, at which point the old clubhouse at the other end of the sports park will be torn down. Work on the last pitch will start upon delivery of AFC neighbour Valley in mid-2021, completing the Goed Genoeg sports park.

ARTZUID 2021 IS ON! Great news: the 7th edition of ARTZUID is going ahead next year! The Art Zuid foundation is currently preparing for the art route, scheduled from 15 May to 19 September 2021. The main inspiration for next year’s focus is Hildo Krop and his passionate beliefs around societal inequities and other universal themes. ARTZUID 2021 will present Dutch and international artists who engage with these issues, exchange and share cultural influences, and both make us aware of and offer hope for a better world. The outdoor exhibition of modern and contemporary sculptural works on Apollolaan, Minervalaan and in Zuidas is intended to inject more life into the neighbourhood by drawing new visitors to Amsterdam Zuid. Wine and dine in a 50-metre Ferris wheel at RAI Amsterdam

Don’t miss it! This autumn, you can enjoy fine dining with a panoramic view of Amsterdam outside RAI Amsterdam. Michelin-star executive chef Joris Bijdendijk of the RIJKS® Restaurant has teamed up with Smakenrad (‘wheel of taste’ in Dutch) to serve his favourite dishes in the country’s biggest Ferris wheel, turning in front of the RAI convention centre for three months from 13 October. The 27 heated cabins have been converted into private restaurants that ascend 50 metres. The menu changes every three weeks and features a variety of dishes from Chef Bijdendijks two restaurants, Wils and RIJKS. Dinner is €42.50 per person (for two courses and a two-hour ride), or you can take a 30-minute breakfast ride for €7.50. To book: www.smakenrad.nl.

FARM-FRESH PRODUCTS COME TO RAI AMSTERDAM Boeren voor Buren – ‘farmers for neighbours’ – is an initiative set up by Rabobank Amsterdam in partnership with the Municipality of Amsterdam. Launched to meet the spike in need for assistance during the coronavirus crisis, this ongoing programme lends a helping hand by linking Dutch farmers and hard-up Amsterdam residents. It supplies healthy and affordable potatoes, fruit and vegetables from regional farms to disadvantaged urban households – to ‘neighbours’ who are struggling to make ends meet. With several locations already, now this initiative is also coming to RAI Amsterdam. In the coming months, RAI Amsterdam will make one hall available two days a week as a space to store and package the food, from which parcels can be distributed throughout the city.

11 PLANE TREES LODGING AT VAN DER VALK FOR A YEAR The 12-metre tall plane trees in front of the Valley building were recently transplanted one by one to the plot between the EMA and Van der Valk hotel. They had to be moved temporarily to allow for the installation of new cabling and pipelines in front of Valley, which was needed to make way for a new entrance to the covered car park, and to widen the bike lane here. When examining the options, plant specialists discovered that plane trees cope well with transplanting, so a nice temporary home was found between the EMA and Van der Valk. A year from now, the planes will be moved back to their original location in front of Valley.
