Intermediate Design Studio 1

In this studio, we were asked to design a Center for Digital Fabrication Arts in West Oakland. The building needed to be an iconic landmark in the area with the inclusive mission of serving as a community-focused art center, training facility, and business incubator. The goal was to bring technology, art, and innovation to West Oakland and serve the local population by connecting it to the fast-growing industries of the Bay Area.

The building provides both indoor and outdoor places for gathering, production space for training in the digital fabrication arts, rental space for business incubation, and housing units. The building fits in with the BART track behind the site location. It advertises itself with the screens on the faรงade facing BART that invites people to stop and visit the building. The products that are fabricated in the building will be displayed on the video screens or will hang from the interior ceiling.

STATEMENT

Advanced Design Studio 2

In this studio, we were asked to design a complex and integrated project in an urban context, with a meaning that is expressed architecturally. The program was an abattoir that was to provide for the receiving of individual animals, slaughtering, butchering, dressing, sale, and the consumption all under one roof. We needed to decide how the architecture would go together programmatically and tectonically, and how our way of thinking about the design activity affects every step of the butchery.

22 / 23

Rather than hiding the process, I chose to expose the butchery activities, in order to give everyone an opportunity to understand the whole workflow. The decision for the materials used were made based on the temperature needed in each program area. Consumers can experience the temperature change to deeply understand meat-making. Every design decision was made with fully integrated understanding of the butchery process.

Advanced Design Studio 1

In this studio, we were asked to explore the design of a high-profile library on an extremely exposed, scenic, and delicate site at Lincoln Park, San Francisco. Libraries are more than just repositories of books. They have a more active role in cultural and social engagement. The library is a symbol of remembrance and place for recollection. The studio asked us to investigate, question, and redefine the role of this enduring typology.

I was moved by the beauty of the site. The view of green trees under white clouds creates a powerful peaceful image in my mind, and I didn’t want to break the harmonious feeling it gave me. It became my main concept to create a space that is under a cloud of books in the forest. Much like that view, there is no clear boundary between inside and outside. The building and nature perfectly merge together.

Therefore, I chose a location for the site that was equidistant from the three bird-watching areas. This location is also convenient for the visitors because it is located near the main access picnic grounds road. To see at least two bird-watching spots from each room, I decided to orient the building facing northeast and angle of the room rotated towards two birdwatching areas. In this way, the building could also receive enough light and enjoy the dynamic sunset and sunrise from each room.

STATEMENT

National Museum of World Writing

In this competition, understanding the inevitable connection found between communication, writing and cultural identity became the fundamental criteria for researching, organizing and laying out our proposal. From the time of cave paintings and petrographic carvings to the word processing systems of today. It is clear that writing has had an evolutionary contribution on the definition, identity and growth of all cultural groups and societies associated with specific languages. Sounds and symbols are two basic categories which contributed to the evolution of languages.

Ultimately, we believe that understanding the various existing social and cultural variations through the lens of writing will enhance the comprehension and connectivity of humanity in our planet. This is the goal of our proposal and the objective of our building design.

The project is a three-story home studio building facing south. The design concept is to maximize shade and reduce the thermal heat of the sun. The hanging aluminum composite panels become the main elements of the faรงade. The walls are non-load bearing. The structural steel framing system gives more opportunity to have larger openings. When the second floor Nana wall is fully opened, the balcony becomes an extension of the interior space. The foundation of the building is cast-in-place reinforced concrete.

COU RSE

STATEMENT

Digitally Generated Morphology

In this class, we were asked to come up with a project that was to be finished by a six-axis robotic arm. I came up with the idea to let the robotic arm investigate how geometry can be “painted in the study of form and facade design. I used a physical model as a structural base of the building, and different facade designs were quickly studied visually by converting a three-dimensional model into light paths for the robotic arm to follow.

INSTR UC TOR S

Robotic Arm Interaction

92 / 93

As a result, multiple studies of complex facade designs were made in an interactive process using long-exposure photography combined with the movement of robotic arm following a set path.
