WELCOME

. enjoy your stay

It’s winter again, and hopefully it’s dumping wherever you are. If it’s not, go get in a few more days of skating before it does. Whatever nature brings this season you can count on PE to keep you warm, dry, and prepared with timeless streetwear and technical outerwear that also happens to be one of the deepest year round, eco-conscious product lines in the industry. Cheers. Planet Earth. 2011.

‘‘Just a year ago this run at Big Sky was filled with jumps, rails, and a pretty good pipe. Due to budget cuts and who knows what other reasons the park was cut back to one small run leaving a mogul field instead. Maybe I was PERSPECTIVES trying to make a statement here, or just having fun with a friend. Borrowing a little inspiration from other photos like this, and talking my friend Kevin into risking his knees, we made lemonade out of lemons.” - Jeff Hawe, photographer

We document & publish their passionate, inspiring reallife stories in the form of videos, written interviews, and photos you’ll see in mags, online and our annual hard cover photo book to share with you, and the rest of the planet all year long. ‘‘I was hanging out at a park ski test at Keystone watching in frustration as the clouds rolled in. They brought with PERSPECTIVES them a fine mist of snow that blanketed the perfectly manicured park, effectively halting the testing process. This was the third day in a row that we were battling the weather and moral was down. Regardless, Josh came flying through the park in the murky air. I begrudgingly lifted my camera and zoomed in. It turned out to be my favorite shot of the day, made possible by the same weather I was flipping off just moments before.” - Matt Harvey, photographer

ORGANIC COTTON .

progress

Learning how to be greener is like learning new tricks. It always looks easier, takes longer, and hurts more, and when you finally stick it, the satisfaction fuels your commitment to step up to the next one. This describes the past 21 years for us in

the streets and the office, and the reason we’ve got one of the most complete year round, top to bottom, ecosensitive product line in action sports today. Here are some of the best tricks in our bag to date.

S. CAFÉ®

let’s be buds

RECYCLED PET .

I used to be a bottle!

Our cotton products are made from a blend of virgin and certified organic cotton.

Our polyester fabrics are made from a blend of virgin and recycled PET.

Just because cotton grows naturally on a plant, doesn’t mean it’s grown naturally. $2 billion USD worth of chemicals are sprayed on the world’s cotton crop every year, half of which is considered toxic enough to be classified as hazardous by the World Health Organization. These chemicals pollute the soil, air, animals, farmers and us all. With only 0.15% of the world’s cotton today guaranteed to be pesticide free, it’s up to us all to continually raise awareness, and increase demand for organic cotton so that it can someday become the standard, instead of the anomaly.

Polyethylene Terephthatlate (PET) is the stuff plastic drink bottles & food jars, and other things, are made of, yet only 30% are being recycled leaving millions of tons a year dumped back into our environment. The best way to increase recycling is to increase the number of ways to use it. At the top of the list is clothing and carpet, accounting for 54% of post recycled PET use. So the next time you wear one of our jackets, feel good knowing you also created one more place for those recycled bottles to go.

FORMALDEHYDE FREE INKS & DYES .

RECYLABLE POLY BAGS .

Our inks and fabric dyes are non-toxic.

Our products are packed in 100% recycled poly bags that are also recyclable.

. fabric

S. Café® Fabric – Drink it, Wear it! S.Café® is a technical composite fiber made from recycled coffee grounds. The fiber is used to make yarn, and then into knitted or woven fabric. S.Café® utilizes coffee grounds’ natural ability to absorb odors for a comfortable wearing experience. It also provides UVA & UVB protection, and is very fast drying. Coffee grounds that have been added into the fiber are collected from coffee shops. After brewing, they are generally taken as waste. Brewing also takes away some of the other substances in coffee grounds, which make the production procedure less energy intensive.

Traditional plastisol printing inks used to create bold and vivid colors contain heavy metals, toxic solvents and even formaldehyde which was recently determined to be a cancer-causing substance. We use water-based inks and dyes and the most up-to-date bio-based plasticizer technology earning it a classification as 100% non-toxic. Our fabric colors and prints are just as durable, stay true to their original color and guarantee our garments are as easy on the environment as they are on your body.

packaged responsibly

More than four TRILLION Polyethylene plastic bags are manufactured each year. It takes 1,000 years for them to break down during which time toxic substances leach into the soil and the food chain. Each year approximately 1 BILLION sea birds and mammals die eating them. So unlike the thousands of other bags you’ve been forced to throw into the environment over your lifetime, go ahead and throw these into the recycling bin and they might become your next jacket.

‘‘On highway 1 between Vancouver and whistler somebody once told me there were ramps in this abandoned PERSPECTIVES warehouse. Me and some friends took the 45 minute drive one day. There’s nothing around there, just a mine museum across the street, and fishing ships anchored. In this barn though there are all these ramps. They are really well built, you can tell someone took their time. It must have been bmx guys because it’s on really rough ground, but you can manage around the cracks. The dock has holes and the building isn’t very stable looking which is why they’ve probably put a fence around it since then.’’ - Rich Odam, photographer

GREASE BUS . interview It sounded too good to be true when Mike Parziale heard any diesel vehicle could run on vegetable oil, free of charge from restaurant’s PERSPECTIVES waste fryer oil. Without much mechanical skill and zero knowledge of diesel motors he quickly set himself free of fossil fuels and on an adventure that criss crossed the country sixteen times following the snow and touring with bands. Over 250,000 petroleoum-free miles later he’s now running a fleet of grease powered busses that takes skiers and snowboarders to the mountains for only $10 a seat. We stopped by to get from Mike the deeper story about what makes Grease Bus go. How did this all start? Back in 2001 I was fresh out of college and saw a camper for sale, the kind you slide into the back of a pickup truck. I thought wow! that would be so cool to have. It was out in front of a junkyard with a for sale sign on it for $200, but I talked them down to $60. I then told them I’m actually going to need a month or so to get a truck for it. The camper had a stove & sink and bathroom so I thought, ok I’ll just live in it for a while. I went to telluride for a week and was talking about it with some friends. They said it’s actually probably going to be expensive to drive around. Then a friend of a friend, Glen Harcourt overheard us and said you guys should run it on grease. He was using biodiesel working for a company called grassoline and heard of people using cooking grease. First I thought it wasn’t true, or people would have known about it. I looked it up online and realized wow, you really can do it. Did you ever buy a truck for the camper? I finally found a truck on Craigslist, it was a cheap diesel. I didn’t now anything about diesel motors so I didn’t realize it had a messed up motor. I brought it to a shop and they said it’s going to throw a piston any second now and I shouldn’t buy it. Too late, I tried getting my money back but I couldn’t. Since I left the camper at the junkyard, I kept thinking that I was going to show up and it would be gone, but it was still there. While there, a dude I told the story to offered to swap out the motor from a suburban. For like three days he and I pulled the motor out of one truck and swapped it. I really jumped right into the deep end and learned a lot and got lots of spare parts from it. Did you convert the truck to run on grease? Yes, now that I had a good working diesel motor and camper I started the grease conversion in Durango Colorado where my dad, who’s really mechanical, helped me out. There was a lot of trial and error, it took a long time and we tried a lot of different systems but eventually we had it working perfect, and since then I still do the same conversion. Did really live in the truck? I took it on the road by myself going snowboarding & visiting friends just chasing the snow. I was in Rochester New York and bumped into friends that were in a band. While hanging out in their van, I was telling them they should convert it to grease. So I ended up converting their van for them. The guitarist was a gas mechanic and I taught him how it worked. Then they asked if I wanted to go on road to tour with them in the US and help do the grease filling stuff they didn’t know about. I was like definitely! I’ll go on the road that sounds fun. Their record label paid me to video the tour and create videos for them. We’d do sound checking and then I’d take the van and go around the alleys and find the grease. It became a routine and something I liked to do. So you became a roadie for a band? I did that for like 2-3 yrs off and on. They played for 500 – 1,000 people a night and at the shows I’d give the front man guitarist a post it note and he’d read, “We burned xxx gallons of grease, saved $xxx, driving xx miles.” These people had fans willing to listen, so every night they had a great audience. We had shirts that said “Grease not Gas” and gave out pamphlets and told the audience after the show if you want to learn more, go around back and we’ll answer questions. Every night 50 or more kids would come out to learn and they’d buy you beer. This is what drove me to create the original website www.greasenotgas.com Definitely a good way to spread the word. Yea, we met other bands that wanted to convert their vans too, probably a dozen bands we converted. Then bands asked if we had a van we can rent, so they can test

it out. So I bought a vehicle and converted and rented it. Then I was starting to get serious with my girlfriend and didn’t like being away as much and became sick of traveling. Eventually I put the van I was renting on Craig’s List. It said “grease bus for sale, perfect for a band, instrument storage in back, etc.” and I didn’t get any responses, not even one person. Did you end up getting a real job? It was November at that point, 2008-09 and I was like man! I got to buy a season pass to ride at Meadows. I had no money and I didn’t know what I’m going to do. For years I was thinking maybe I could charge people to go to the mountain and Meadows would give me a pass but it always seemed too farfetched. But that winter I couldn’t sell the van, I didn’t have a job, I didn’t have a pass so I just went for it and had a friend setup a website. One of the main motivations was the free season pass. So I called the sustainability coordinator at Meadows and asked, do you think you could get me a pass if I ran a bus on veggy oil and brought people up there daily? She talked to her boss and said yes. The first time I ran the Grease Bus was February 2009. How did it become a legit business? I couldn’t afford to wrap the bus in cool graphics, so I just bought blank white window vinyl and used some sharpies and wrote on it “Portland to Meadows $10 round trip”. I drew all these little characters like French fries on snowboards and calamari skiing. I parked it in the parking lot and people thought it was awesome and people started signing up. I was the only

driver and it was getting popular so I was so anxious to get a day off. It was getting tiring. Every night I’d have to go out look for grease, then wake up, go riding, same routine. Spring break I did 14 days in a row and went crazy. How do you keep the price to only $10 a seat? Its’ a way to make snowboarding accessible to people that can’t normally get there. I want it to be for kids that couldn’t get to the mountain otherwise. There are people that ask, “Are you going to Meadows? I can’t afford to get there without Grease Bus.” I originally thought I’d charge $10 to get the word out and then increase it, but we just kept it. It may be unrealistic but sponsors now agree we want to get people out there and they’ll sponsor and pay to cover the real costs since the money is going to a real grassroots program to get people on the snow. We’re now more of an advertising company. So you’re running a grease powered ad? In my head I run a marketing company and not a bus service, and that’s fine but the end user thinks it’s a bus company to get to the hill. We’re like a transportation Robin Hood. We only fit 20 people so the $10 fee doesn’t pay for it. I lived in New York City and there was this bus from Boston to NY China Town called the Fungwah & I lived for it, if I didn’t have the Fungwah I couldn’t live there. What kind of people ride the Greasebus? The demographic is mostly people that don’t have a car. The people that own cars we get too, but for them the toughest part is they’re locked in to hanging untill

4:00. At this point the bus fills up everyday no matter what. I know there’s enough demand to up the price, but I just don’t want too, because it’s cool to be so cheap. I figured it out and adding $5 per person is going to add up to $10k but I could just get one more sponsor and it would be covered so people wouldn’t have to pay more. It must feel good to share your passion with others. The big thing for me is that I got introduced to the whole veggie oil conversion thing ten years ago this coming year. I did it, and realized I could run my car on vegetable oil even though I’m not a mechanic. I want to help other people do it so they can go snowboarding and visit friends and feel truly free. When you realize you don’t have to buy gas to drive around the country it’s amazing. And today I still have an audience that I can teach about vegetable oil and they can appreciate that the ticket price is low because of it. The goal remains the same but now there’s service involved. There are TV’s in there, I can show movies that inspire someone else to go out and do this. GREASE BUS . interview It sounded too good to be true when Mike Parziale heard any diesel vehicle could run on vegetable oil, free of charge from restaurant’s PERSPECTIVES waste fryer oil. This copy of the Planet Earth catalog was printed on paper from well-managed forests which meets EPA guidelines that recommend use of recovered fibers for coated papers. Inks used contain a blend of soy base. Our printer meets or exceeds all federal Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) standards and is a certified member of both the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

‘‘In Montana a good portion of the zones we ride are quite remote, especially in the winter months. Sometimes we even see wolves. This location is deep in a nameless drainage within Yellowstone National Park, where solitude and peace is plentiful. The snow piles high so snowshoes are the only PERSPECTIVES option for getting in and out. The terrain available varies, but this day we had built a hip jump with a steep run in. While Jeremiah was hiking back towards the top I snapped this photo, simply to illustrate how lonesome feeling it is in one of our favorite spots.” - Jeff Hawe, photographer
