The Wu-Tang Clan is a groundbreaking hip hop collective from Staten Island, New York, consisting of RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Led and produced by RZA, the group assembled in the early 90s and adopted their name after the film Shaolin and Wu Tang. The Wu-Tang Clan gained a sizeable underground following after the 1993 release of the independent single “Protect Ya Neck“ and their tour with Cypress Hill and Alcoholics. Their critically acclaimed, debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), was released in November, 1993, on the Loud/ RCA label and stands as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Their second release, Wu- Tang Forever, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and sold over four million copies in the US alone. The group has launched the careers of numerous affiliated acts, collectively known as the Wu-Tang Killa Bees, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential groups of the last two decades. The Wu-Tang Clan helped pioneer modern-day rapping, production techniques, subject matter and image. Among these contributions have been RZA’s sampling style, members’ mafioso rap personas, usage of slang terms and artists’ tendency to run in tightly knit groups.

KURT COBAIN Kurt Cobain formed Nirvana alongside of Krist Novoselic in 1987. He was the band’s songwriter, vocalist and guitarist. Following the release of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ from the ‘Nevermind’ album in 1991, Nirvana became over night rock stars. ‘Nevermind’ brought alternative rock into mainstream. It is representative of a generation and its culture. Through this record, Cobain became the spokesperson of Generation X. He captures feelings and emotions through his lyrics; and presents them through his poetically ferocious rasp. Kurt Cobain died at the age of 27—a death that music fans still contemplate 20 years later. The photograph pictured captures Cobain’s provocative side that is representative of himself, Nirvana and Generation X.
