Scandinavian all-mountain since 1981
It began in 1981, when the founders Patrik Söderlund and Stefan Cederberg started to make snowboards in their parents’ garage in Östersund, Sweden. They had picked up the signals of what was going on in the US and soon they started to experiment with snowboard manufacturing. The families’ garages were turned into an inventor’s workshop with a lot of ideas and creativity. In 1993 Extrem Snowboards of Scandinavia was founded and the tiny garage was changed into a larger factory building. The growth came quickly and very soon Extrem became one of the most selling snowboard brands in Sweden. In 1998 the company started to make skis under the same brand, which were then the first Swedish made alpine skis in 25 years. Today, only skis are manufactured and sold under brand name Extreme.

After having been owned by a Norwegian outdoor group for four years, Extrem was repurchased by the founders and three new investors in 2011. The company is now called Åre Skidfabrik (Åre Ski Factory) and is Scandinavia’s only alpine ski factory, where Extrem is a wholly owned brand. Most of the machinery is from 2009, when large investments were made in the factory. The choice of machinery has been made by the requirement to produce skis with very high quality and with flexible production. In addition to the modern machinery, the employees have long experience from building high quality skis, suitable for all kind of skiing. The product development is to a large extent still managed by the founders.

Since the repurchase of Extrem in 2011, the brand has had several successes and a rapid growth in Sweden. • A totally new ski range with a clear and defined product line • In many stores, Extrem was the fastest selling brand during AW 12-13. • The model Project 100 receives the gold medal for best all-mountain ski in the largest Swedish ski magazine Åka Skidor 2012. That also made the model one of the most selling all-mountain skis in Sweden AW 12-13. • The model Project 100 Woman receives the gold medal for best all-mountain female ski in the largest Swedish ski magazine Åka Skidor 2013. • The model PT 84 receives the bronze medal for best frontside ski in the largest Swedish ski magazine Åka Skidor 2013. • Launched the ”Opinion” project on Scandinavia’s largest ski community, Freeride.se. The goal of the project has been to develop a new cutting edge freeride ski together with hundreds of dedicated skiers. A truly ”developed by skiers for skiers” project. So far it has been the most viewed and commeted product thread ever on the Freeride.se forum.
the future In order to further strengthen its position in Sweden as a high quality performance brand, Extrem will continue to focus on the home market as a base. However, the main focus for the years to come will be an international expansion. During 2012-13, Extrem established agents/distributors in some of the European markets, such as France and Switzerland. The goal is to have sales representation in the major ski markets within 2-3 years and sell the skis mainly through the top specialist stores in each country.

”Praised as the best all-mountain ski that Åka Skidor has ever tested, and that says a lot.” (test review on Project 100, Åka Skidor #6 2012). Simply optimal all-mountain skis for demanding Scandinavian conditions that work on icy slopes, windpacked, powder or spring snow! The elliptic tip and tail rocker adds floatation in the soft snow, at the same time as it becomes easy to ski on the hard packed. The construction with a birch or poplar woodcore, reinforced with double layers of titanal and dampening rubber membranes makes the skis stable and the skier confident.

OPINION
The first community-developed ski ever! Created by the members of Freeride.se in a forum thread with 1.000 member posts, 400.000 visits and one year of development. The ski is a versatile everyday-ski for a freerider that focuses on off-piste skiing. Opinion is optimized to quench the powder thirst and to rule in slush and other soft snow, but at the same time be able to ski with plenty of pressure on the slopes. A harmonious tapered tip and tail, combined with a low-rise rocker profile, has created a ski that is a delight to spend time with in all types of snow conditions. The ski is made out of snappy poplar wood and stable beech wood, in combination with the lightweight material Tubecomb in tip and tail. This has created a ski that is playful and easy to maneuver, but which also shows full performance at high speed over bumps and on hard packed. Read the full product development process in the thread at freeride.se/opinion.
