FINDING NEW LINES

[JEREMY JONES SHIRT] 650246 – [JEREMY JONES THERMAL PANTS] 650248

THE LIFE, LABOR & LOVES OF JEREMY JONES

My name’s Jeremy Jones. I’ve been snowboarding pretty much my whole life and been with O’Neill for over 12 years. I ended up working with O’Neill because surfing has always been a big part of my life and I’d often had O’Neill wetsuits. When I heard they were getting into snow, I thought they would be the perfect company to work with, so I actually reached out to them. Thankfully they felt I was the right fit. Back in the day, I had recently moved West and most of my snowboarding was lift-service freeriding. The stuff I’m doing now is probably more complex than it’s ever been. My connection with the mountains just continues to evolve and I think I have a more intimate, stronger connection with them than I used to. These days it’s common for me to be in the mountains before the sun comes up and get out of them after the sun sets. And I’m doing a ton of winter camping, staying up there for long periods of time. So my demands on my clothing compared to what they were 12 years ago are far greater and I think that the clothing we’re making reflects this. From when I first got onto O’Neill to today, I think my general goal has been to constantly try to evolve as a snowboarder, use my board to explore the mountains and to connect with nature – all of that stuff has really been a constant in my life.

I’m developing a bunch of different products – like this new O’Neill collection, which is the biggest it’s ever been and the most involved I’ve ever been. I’ve just come out with a new snowboard boot … so life gets crazy, but I’ve learned that the key to keeping it all together is consistent time in the mountains. And everything that I do – whether it’s this collection that we’re releasing now, or the snowboards, or more ideas for the environment – it’s all born in the mountains. That is the root of it all.

JONES FOR ALL THE ART OF FUNCTION

Creating this new line was an amazing experience. We got the designers together – we brought in Kyle NG which added some outside perspective – and got [JEREMY JONES 3L SHELL] 650000

everyone up to the mountains for a couple of days. We really just started from scratch, first with the basic inspiration, and then getting it more drilled down into the technical side. Before that, I had felt there was room for more creativity and just a different feel and vibe, and bringing Kyle NG into it was really helpful. I felt like we’d got kind of stale, so it was a really exciting and fun experience. I think it really shows in the outcome of the clothing. The attention to detail that we put into the design process comes across. It has an incredible balance of being very technical in the areas where the clothing needs to perform at its highest level. I really felt like clothing made me look like I was going to climb Mount Everest, or an astronaut going to the moon. I just wanted to bring this more surf, lifestyle vibe into it because being in the mountains for me is not this kind of super technical deal. For me, it’s like snowboarding is my art-form and I wanted clothing with a similar vibe, kind of like I’d wear when I’m not in the mountains.

Then again, with the three-layer stuff, this material is incredibly technical. You can go and live in a snow cave in it. When I’m out in the backcountry splitboarding, layering is essential. Basically, on the way up heat is a major issue. You’re expending so much energy, so you need the ability to go to what I call “max air conditioning” mode – meaning, [JEREMY JONES ELEVATION JACKET] 655004

if you’re sweating you’re using up way too much energy. It’s going to be tougher to recover. You’re working incredibly hard, so being able to open up vents or strip down so you’re not sweating is crucial.

[JEREMY JONES SHRED PANTS] 658002

From a selfish perspective, being someone who’s in the mountains for so much of my life, when I have new clothing that’s more comfortable, works better, fits better and so on, it literally improves my quality of life. But I’m also really excited that the collection

[JEREMY JONES 3L SHELL] 650000 – [JEREMY JONES 3L PANTS] 653000

has expanded. We have stuff for women, we’ve got lifestyle pieces for off-the-hill, so it’s no longer just upper-echelon specific pieces just for people that want to do this out-there backcountry snowboarding and skiing. After seeing the final collection, I think we really nailed that mix of lifestyle, off-hill clothing into this highly technical gear and struck a balance between the two.

PROTECT OUR WINTERS JEREMY JONES

With Protect Our Winters it’s full steam ahead. We continue to surround ourselves with smarter people, more powerful people, more people. Now we have 80 athletes in our Rider’s Alliance, eight scientists in our Science Alliance. We have an extremely active board of directors of 12 people and what that means is we’re just getting better at what we’re doing which is to unite the winter sports community to slow down climate change. There are a handful of different programs that we have in order to do that and we’re constantly learning and improving and doing better work. Also, it’s a really exciting time on the climate front. Truly, for the first time since I started POW eight years ago, I feel like we’re really gaining momentum. And not just POW. The world is embracing the fact that we have this problem and there are all sorts of solutions coming out now. We’re starting to embrace those solutions so I’m as optimistic as I’ve ever been with the belief that we can really reduce our impact on the environment moving forward. The stakes could not be higher, but it’s also changing every day. Even look at where we were in the fight against climate change last year compared to where we are today. I mean, in Canada their last prime minister didn’t believe in climate change and for 10 years that approach dominated its elections. Now, an environmentalist is in charge of Canada. Look at the Paris summit, and I was just reading about these major companies – Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Walmart, companies that you would not think of as environmental companies – they’re now signing these letters saying, “We need to take climate change more seriously and we need to act at the highest level. So there’s all sorts of indicators and I am really the most optimistic that I’ve been in the eight years since we’ve been going with POW. O’Neill proudly supports POW.

HIGH, DRY & STYLISH O'NEILL SNOW WINTER 16/17

The wind whipped, brutal, off the crests of black granite peaks. Greyness and bitter chill wrapped around us, smothering our group of friends and colleagues – people of the mountains, one and all. Elements this raw can eat into your bones. But at times, the shroud of cloud would lift. Bright beyond white. Blue beyond cerulean on the spectrum of blues. Solar warmth cocktailing with sub-zero air. Here, high in the Austrian Alps, nature’s elements overpower the senses. There is, first of all, awe at the beauty in every vista. There is respect and wonder at the fast-changing weather, at times tightening its grip on us as we trod over icy pack; other times releasing its hold on these daunting peaks, shining and sublime. Cold on the outside? Yes. That wind. Those moments of elemental rawness. Summer on the inside? More like a perfect spring day – cool enough to keep us from boiling as we trek and glide on the open glacier; warm enough to enjoy the chill without feeling it in our core. Perfect body temp. Perfect protection. Comfort. And although there’s no one but ourselves to see it, we have style, too – even in this moody wilderness!

[GALAXY II JACKET] 650022

We laugh because we are warm and dry here in the brutal exposure, and – this is the crazy part – because we know we could descend, right now, into the lower world, walk on busy streets, drink in trendy biergartens, shop, skate or just go about our daily business – all in these same clothes. Something feels right about this new line. No more spaceman suits. No more over-spec mountain-nerd gear. Just great clothing that we can laugh in – in the ‘real’ world at lower altitudes, or while we’re riding, sliding, climbing, exploring, surviving … up here … so much closer to Heaven.

“The mountains and glacier are always wonderful, any time of year, whatever the weather. We had a great crew and some amazing riding, even though the season had hardly begun. OK, around here the weather swings between dark and sunny skies, but you can’t beat the raw feel it has up on the ridgelines and the glacier. Highlights? Staying in the old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, somewhere down the end of a dirt track. That place was wild. Low ceilings and, thank God, an epic fire that kept us warm and made it a kind of home from home in the backcountry. I think this year’s collection is awesome. I met up with Silvia, Nadine, Yanneck and Julien to ski on the glacier. We hiked to a ridge to check out the terrain and explored the resort to find the exposed ice. We skied till the lifts closed. No buildings within 40km from the bottom of the resort. On the way up, you drive along the beautiful lake and come face to face with this massive glacier. It was November. Early season. WITH LUCÍA MARTIÑO

Lucía’s day is not like yours. Her week is not like our week. Lucía is a truly down-to-earth girl, but she’s also a professional surfer. She is a champion athlete. Lucía glides through life, literally. But gliding is not cruising. For Lucía to be the best she can be, everything must be primed to ‘optimum’. Optimum physical condition, optimum mindset, the best surfing she can achieve, even in the worst conditions, a diet that optimizes her power, health, vitality and beauty. Her boards, her wetsuits and even her clothing need to be right so that Lucía can keep her focus, find her limits and keep pushing beyond them – all with a radiant smile on her face.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF LUCÍA MARTIÑO

“My normal day involves surfing – whatever the conditions! – followed by physical training on land,” says Lucía. “In the winter I surf around five days a week for my basic training, usually between three to four hours a day. Most of those days I surf with my coach, focusing on techniques, strategies and surf fitness. The rest is free surfing.” “I also do physical training five days a week, switching between circuits, boxing and other strength/ core workouts. And of course I stretch every day.” Lucía is focused because she knows she can achieve, but she fills her life with this work for one primary reason – it’s fun! Yes, she is two-time Spanish Nationals Champion, winner of the Lacanau Pro Junior, and Lucía placed 3rd overall in the European Pro Juniors, and now she’s working her way up the World Qualifying Series, fuelled by the taste of victories. But Lucía has perfect perspective.

“In competition you can go through so many different feelings. When you win a heat or a contest it’s incredible because you realise that all the hard work you've done during the season has paid off. And if I lose? Yes, I get angry, but at the same time, I look at my errors and try to figure out ways to improve.” “But I enjoy both competition surfing and free surfing. For me, free surfing is more about looking for the perfect wave and enjoying great sessions with friends. So to choose between contest surfing and free surfing would be pretty much impossible for me because … well, I just love surfing!” Lucía’s latest search for perfect waves took her to Lofoten, an island off of Norway, famous for unreasonably good waves. “What a magical place for a trip!” she says. “It was sooo good to see that beautiful place, to be surrounded by such powerful beauty. One day we woke up and it was all white – the lake outside our window was reflecting the snow on the mountains so everything was just … snow-white. Right there in front of our room was one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen. Later, the whole crew went out and watched the Northern Lights together – just incredible!”

“I train hard and it’s important for my clothing to handle every movement without making me feel restricted or uncomfortable in any way. I wear my leggings to the beach, of course, and even in the water when I’m surfing in summer or when I’m on a warm-water trip.”

“Funny, the waves weren’t actually that good while we were there – not compared to how good that place can get – but still we had some really fun surfs. I'm used to travelling to warmer places where I can surf in a bikini. I had been to Iceland before, but Lofoten was waaay colder! Being in the water was fine because my wetsuits are great. The hardest part was changing once we got to the beach and after we got out! I mean, in Spain in winter normally the coldest the air gets is 0º and the water, about 12º. LEFT: [REVIVE LONG SLEEVE TOP] 657104 – [SURF LEGGING PRINT] 657736 + RIGHT: [QUILTED CREW SWEATSHIRT] 656405 – [SURF LEGGING PRINT] 657736

Back home it’s easy – I just get changed in the clubhouse, which has hot showers! The water in Norway was like 8º and we had to change outside! I literally can't imagine what it's like surfing there in winter! But you know what, all this stuff is what makes being a surfer and athlete so much fun. I’d say we had a perfect week in Lofoten – the surfing was so different, the people were amazing and we shared some truly out-of-this-world experiences.“

“SURF LEGGINGS ARE A PERFECT FIT FOR MY LIFESTYLE”

“These O'Neill Surf Leggings are a perfect fit for my lifestyle. They’re stylish, so comfortable and 100% functional for all the activity I do. I can use them every day of my week, whatever I’m doing and know that they work and they look great.”

WAKING UP TO THE ARCTIC “WOW!” O'NEILL LIFESTYLE FW 16/17

Surfing can take us to places we never dreamed of. Far off islands in far-flung seas beckon and tempt wave riders everywhere. But if we dream in colour, do our distant islands need turquoise seas, deep green palms, white hot skies?

LIFESTYLE FALL/WINTER

What if we find ourselves in a living dream, awestruck, spellbound, enchanted by islands with ice as well as waves? What colour is stoke inside the Arctic Circle? They say: you only know if you go. So when a crew of O’Neill riders converged from across the world on a small Arctic island, anticipation gripped us, one and all. We met, we greeted – old friends and new – and drove into the wild, virgin lands whose coast is broken by the fiercest of oceans. Its inlets are shadowed by snow-draped mountains, reflecting colors bright yet somehow muted – cold, dark seascapes juxtaposed with the welcome warmth of golden grasses, bright yellow lichens, against backdrops of deep green heather gorse. Our island was a dream we’d never dreamed of. The landscapes were so vast we doubted they were real. The elements looked as brutal as they did beautiful, and the surf was so dreamy that sometimes we even forgot the ocean chill.

O'NEILL X PARLEY

In 2016/2017, O’Neill continues its important collaboration with Parley for the Oceans. Despite the daunting scale of the problems facing our seas, Parley’s work and the remarkable recycled Bionic Yarn material are again woven into this year’s new collections, and also, we’re proud to say, into O’Neill’s whole identity. Parley is a fight to protect the oceans. It began over four years ago when designer, Cyrill Gutsch met Capt. Paul Watson, founder of the activist organization Sea Shepherd. Gutsch decided he had to use his skill set, which was strategic branding in the creative and fashion industries, to join the fight. So he brought together friends from industry, business leaders, scientists, government agencies and people in art, fashion and other creative fields to find fresh approaches to solving the problems we face. Capt. Paul Watson famously says: “If the oceans die, we die”. Parley’s initiatives, and technologies like Bionic Yarn, enable bold companies like O’Neill to join this vital fight against the destruction of our ocean systems. That’s good for the ocean, for the planet and for all of us.
