THE MOST EXTREME AND EFFECTIVE CONSTRUCTION

Our 3D.Ridge technology – now found in everything from the V-WERKS KATANA and BMT to the ultra-light VTA88 LITE touring ski, the RTM highend models and 100EIGHT/90EIGHT – is quite probably the most extreme and effective construction technique that exists currently. It has become a symbol of VÖLKL lightweight construction. The distinctive characteristic of this technology is a raised central ridge that sharply levels out toward the edge, both in front of and behind the binding. This reduces the inertial mass around the fulcrum to a minimum and significantly enhances the agility of the ski. At the same time, the center ridge allows for a precise dimensioning of the hardness distribution, which leads to an especially harmonious flex on the ski. Despite the weight savings, the 3D.Ridge ensures that there is no compromise whatsoever in the ski‘s durability and elasticity.

FREESKI AND TOURING SKIS While a tip & tail rocker shape for alpine situations might have 2 mm of upward bend, a full rocker freerider will have double that. The functional principle is the same. Because VÖLKL freeride and touring skis have to function on hard surfaces as well, we’ve put tremendous effort into harmonizing the rocker curve with the flex and sidecut so that, just like the alpine skis, they can cover the greatest possible range of situations.

PERFECT ON ANY TERRAIN Contrary to popular belief, wider models equipped with the rocker shape also perform well on the groomed slopes. The construction allows for the same lines you work off-piste to be carried over 1:1 to the prepared terrain. The fun factor and skiing flow remain, whatever the conditions. This also applies for our touring skis. With these skis in particular, flawless functionality is demanded, whatever the snow conditions. And it’s the rocker design that again creates this necessary flexibility.

FUNCTIONALITY OF A ROCKER SKI

// C ambered skis are bent “into shape” by the weight of the rider, with the curve following the prescribed radius. This curved shape is always present in the rocker ski, so initiating turns is inherently easier. // A s the ski is put on edge its effective edge length extends – the greater the angle, the higher the stability. // T he length of the edge grows as needed, automatically getting longer in the steeps.

While tip rockers and tip & tail rockers are found in all ski categories, the full rocker is used only in selected freeski and touring skis. The specific bend will vary depending on the ski‘s intended use. Alpine/All Mountain skis have lower rocker profiles, while freeski/touring/park&pipe skis have taller ones.

Rocker constructions go together with skis just like snow goes with winter – once you experience the joy, you‘ll never go back. While rocker technologies are not themselves new, having entered into all categories of our collection some years ago, they currently play an important role in the VÖLKL PERFECT SETUP. Once tailored with the correct flex profile and sidecut to the specific target audience, each different rocker construction provides enormous benefits to the skier, and almost all models end up with much better handling performance while requiring less exertion. To achieve this, we calculate the optimal version of the rocker line for each individual ski model.

4 REASONS why our rockers live up to our promises: 1 High-precision rocker shape The uniformly round arc in the rocker area improves the transfer of power and steering precision. Our rocker profiles are precise and highly refined because they are not „retrofitted“ to an existing ski, but rather are integrated during the grinding stage on the metal forms.

2 Optimally harmonized flex It took hundreds of prototypes before we figured out that a ski must be somewhat stiffer in the front part of the rocker zone to attain a quiet ride and stability. The flex on all our rocker skis is meticulously and individually calculated to prevent “overflex” of the rocker in the front and to enable precise steering of the ski.

3 Sidecut tailored to the rocker A rocker ski requires a less pronounced sidecut than its cambered counterpart when navigating the same turn. Yet you can’t “rebend” an existing camber model into a rocker – the flow and precision of the steering is lost.

4 Shape tailored to the rocker A lower ski tip produces less resistance and the ski is easier to turn. A stronger upward bend by contrast is the biggest tool in preventing the ski from sinking into the deep snow. Rocker profiles take advantage of both techniques: a flatter flex arc yet a higher ski tip. We test each model for the perfect tip height.

THE MULTI-FUNCTIONAL HIGHLIGHT SERIES FOR 2015/16 RTM stands for „Ride The Mountain“ and means that this ski will work on any trail and on virtually any set of steeps. Although it may seem to be tailor-made for alpine sports, a second glance reveals that no ski has ever offered this range of versatility. The RTM is ready for almost any on-trail conditions, performing as commanded on virtually any terrain. The secret to its enormous flexibility is the XTD Tip & Tail / Tip Rocker construction, which keeps these skis absolutely playful and ready for anything. In 2015/16, the program has been significantly ramped up with four completely new models. Joining the RTM 81 and RTM 78 are two bright new stars, the RTM 86 UVO and RTM 84 UVO with highquality 3D.Ridge core and the revolutionary UVO vibration dampener. There is also a new iPT WIDERIDE XL binding that is more strongly integrated into the ski, with a new retention system attached as widely as possible onto the ski. It guarantees absolute direct and loss-free power transfer and top ski control in all situations.
