Forks of the Road: The Joint Landscape of All Time History Dates: 2013 Site Location: Natchez, MI The Forks of the Road was the second largest slave market of the antebellum America, today, it somehow services as a divide point demographically and economically. By convert the site into a civic memorial, the project aims to recall the dark history of the slavery and provides a safe educational space for the mixed neighborhoods.

In order to define the site’s identity, the project evaluates the site from a regional town scale to the site-scale. There is a strong connection from the under the-hill along the Mississippi riverfront to the forks of the road, then to the Natchez trace. This route was the live path of the earliest human settlement in Natchez, also the slave-selling route around the antebellum era of the second largest slave market. Today this axis divides the city into two extremes; the area above the axis owns a large population American Africans yet the income is significantly lowers the area below the axis. Also children living in the upper area own a very high level of poverty and low level of education. The strategy is to interpreting the site as a significant place of the slavery history, at the same time, dedicates to address the gap between the neighborhoods above and below the axis.

Material Palette The general materials used for landscape refinement of the landscape axis; Using metal surface to represents the coffle and chain; the cotton grass evokes the memorial of cotton plantations.

The project proposes to convert the old slave trade route into a slavery history education landscape axis. Site as a metaphor The wall represents the old city property line; the pond represents the old Spanish Bayou and so on.

6

As the site itself, the project defines it as a multi-use site for education, socialization, celebration and commemoration. The design recalls the dark history by use metaphorical landscape spaces. “The wall represents the old city property line; the pond represents the old Spanish Bayou and so on. On the usage of material, the project proposes uses metal pavements to recall the chains and coffles. Also, keeps the existing topography, as the site is the high point and serves as the entrance of the Natchez city. By use unitive plant materials and porous pavements, the project not only adds more attraction points for the city, but also makeups the large hard pavement vacant lots of the city and reduces the run-off in a aesthetic way, as well as provides tree shadow for the outdoor activities during the long hot summer of Mississippi.

Proposed Entrance The path of contemplation, represents the scene of slaves take bath in the old bayou next ot the site.

Experiencing Pit Representing the scene of slaves being examined by buyers.

B W Cooper Housing Development Reconstruction Dates: 2012 Site Location: New Orleans The B.W. Cooper Apartments is a public housing development project of the city of New Orleans. The project was built between 1939 and 1941. There are more than 1500 apartment units with large percentage of African Americans living in. Most of them are low-income families.

My design aims at decrease the water runoff as well as increasing community vibrancy. By applying bio-swales, rain gardens and permeable pavement in the community to capture, retain and infiltrate water into ground, the site would achieve 27% water runoff reduction by capturing 20,000 ft3 volume. The design organizes different green storm water infrastructures as a system to complete the hydrology circulation of the site. Another goal of this design would be obtained by providing every unit an outdoor private space. For those families, private porches and outdoor garden would be the designed choice. It gives families the feeling that they own the outside public space. The space sequence from private, semi-private to public naturally enables people to engage the outdoor space.

Un Cultivated: Desoto Park Productive Design Dates: 2012 Site Location: Baton Rouge, LA Desoto Park will function mainly as a productive landscape and serve as an educational institute within part of the visitor center. Crawfish is the most unique crops in Louisiana. Being both productive and representative, the crawfish and rice cultivation system will be a great topic for this project. Another reason is that the natural condition in the site are perfectly suitable for the crawfish and rice growth.
