1st May: Day of fight for workers’ rights and dignity “You are actually walking on a subterranean fire. You may ignore this. But you cannot avoid it”. A. Spice, one of the heads of the revolution of 1st May 1886 in Chicago, answered with these words, to his accusers before being led to the gallows. There have been 92 years after Labour Day was first celebrated in
Cyprus, with the initiative of the C.C.P. and Limassol Labour Centre. Today, 131 years after the heroic Labour Day in Chicago, 92 years after the first Labour Day in Cyprus, the visions of the pioneers are still inspiring and uniting the employees in the fight for work with rights, for peace, democracy and social progress. What if so many years have passed? What has changed since the bloodshed Labour Day in Chicago? How much has humanity progressed since then and towards which direction? The imperialistic forces continue the invasions and the interventions. Hundreds of thousands dead people and injured people. Millions of homeless people. The crisis of the capitalistic system has tragic consequences for the world employees. Unemployment, deregulation, destruction of the social state, privatizations.

Abolition of protection, penalization of the fights, autarchy and suspension. All these for monopolies to proliferate, for big capital’s profitability to be ensured, even with blood. These are the policies that we have been witnessing in Cyprus for the last four years. Undermining of salaries, destruction of the social state, sale of the public wealth in various ways. Stable and continuous widening of the social inequality, with the poor people becoming poorer and rich people becoming fewer by proportion as well as much richer. Of course, we are not passive towards the attack we received. We have organized our reaction, we have been the leaders in movements, we have defended the collective agreements and the rights of the workers. We have passed to the counterattack. We are successfully claiming the return of salaries and rights that were lost due to the conditions created with the memorandum of Anastasiades’ government. At the same time, we broke the fear, strengthened in terms of organizations and we look forward with optimism and confidence. Under this framework, with the slogan “We fight for reunification, for social and syndicalistic rights”, we celebrated the Labour Day. Under such conditions, the value of organizations, class-oriented solidarity and action unity can be shown. Thus, Labour Day reminds us of the self-evident issues. That nothing is given for free and that we should fight and be organized and faithful to the right of fight to improve our gains. The diachronic message of Labour Day reminds us that the workers can be mainly based on their own forces. So, this year PEO events jointly organized with the class-oriented T/C trade unions sent the message that for us Labour Day is a day of honour and memory. It is a day of fight for the rights and the dignity of workers for a society without exclusions and discriminations, for a reunited Cyprus, a joint country of all its children.

В наши дни миллионы трудящихся-иммигрантов способны активизировать свою борьбу против капиталистического варварства, участвуя в действиях своих профсоюзных организаций. 2017 год характеризуется обострением глубинных империалистических противоречий, вызывающих ещё большую эксплуатацию народов, а также опасность всеобщей войны. События в Африке, Сирии, на Ближнем Востоке, в Азии и Европе доказывают агрессивность капитала по отношению к рабочему движению, вынуждают тысячи людей

Institutions’ Crisis There was an attack by the Financial Minister against the Auditor General. This is not the first time that Government’s officers react in a really bad way and attack the independent institutions of the State. The remarkable issue noted through this specific event, is the written statement of the Minister, accusing the Auditor General for loss of objectiveness and independence, because after an MP’s complaint he investigated the case of the appointment of Mrs Orfanidou. It is inconceivable for the Minister to be disturbed when an independent institution acts within the frameworks of its authorities. The independent institutions of the state and especially the Auditor General are not an extension of the Government and he will not carry out control only when he has complaints by the Government. The independent institutions of the State have to keep their independence and exercise their duties unimpeded. At the same time, through the whole behaviour of the Minister is proved for one more time the trend for eclecticism that characterizes the Government is proved. However, this is not the first time that we have seen appointments made based on the political property or redemption of the pre-electoral exchanges. These behaviours are unacceptable and are a black spot for the political life of the country. Such behaviour contributes to the devaluation of the institutions to the society’s eyes and push society to further devaluation of the institutions and the political life.

эмигрировать, спасаясь от военных действий. А в это время Европейский Союз и европейские правительства притворяются, что хотят помочь выжить многочисленным беженцам. Трудящихся всего мира беспокоит агрессивность правительства США, НАТО и их союзников, которые, стремясь получить новые рынки сбыта и контроль над природными ресурсами совершают бомбардировки Сирии, убивают детей в Палестине. Они толкают народ Венесуэлы к гражданской войне, угрожают использованием ядерного оружия на Корейском полуострове. Внутрикапиталистический антагонизм ещё более ухудшает экономическое положение трудящихся и пенсионеров. Урезание зарплат и пенсионных пособий, приватизации в области социального страхования, в общественном здравоохранении и образовании, увеличение безработицы, «чёрной» занятости и ограничение профсоюзных свобод – это обстановка, в которой отметили Первомай 2017 года. ВФП обращается к трудящимся мира, собравшимися под знаменем Международного дня солидарности трудящихся, объединить свои голоса в призыве организации борьбы с империалистическим варварством, за удовлетворение современных потребностей народов, за мир без эксплуатации и войн. От имени 92 миллионнов своих членов, живущих во всех уголках земного шара, ВФП выражает солидарность с героическим народом Кубы, который примет у себя с 3 по 5 мая Президентский Совет Федерации.
ПОТЕРИ КИПРА ИЗ-ЗА САНКЦИЙ ПРОТИВ РОССИИ Депутат парламента Кипра, Генеральный секретарь партии АКЕЛ Андрос Киприану, автор резолюции об отмене санкций против России, рассказал каналу RT, какие финансовые потери понесёт страна из-за введения ограничительных мер. «По расчётам нашего правительства, из-за санкций против России мы потеряем около 13 миллионов евро. Страны – члены ЕС потеряют более 60 миллиардов евро, и это о многом говорит. Санкции были применены к России по причинам, которые нам на самом деле не очень понятны. Пострадали от этого люди и в Европе, и в России. Для нас это неприемлемо. Мы полагаем, что всё это продвигают Соединённые Штаты исключительно по политическим мотивам. Европа пошла у них на поводу, потому что не смогла противостоять давлению. Я бы сказал, что это способ изолировать Россию и в то же время продвигать свои интересы», – сказал Киприану. В июле 2016 года в парламенте Кипра прошло голосование по резолюции, призывающей правительство начать работу по снятию санкций, введённых в отношении России. Инициативу поддержали 33 депутата, 17 воздержались, против не проголосовал никто.
