8th Cyprus Peace March Thousands of people participated in the 8th Cyprus Peace March at the British Base in Akrotiri on 10th June, which was held by the Cyprus Peace Council to claim for their removing from the island and for Peace in Cyprus and all over the world. The participants came from all over Cyprus and gathered on Kolossi-Akrotiri road and they marched towards
the British Bases, where they approved and submitted two votes for Cyprus’ issue and the situation in the area, to a representative of the Bases. Cyprus Peace March was greeted by World Peace Council S.G, Thanasis Pafilis, the President of the Cyprus Peace Council, Stelios Sofocles, as well as by representatives of the National Peace an Solidarity Councils of Syria, Palestine and Britain, the Vice-President of the Greek-Committee for Recession and Peace, George Lambrakis and the S.G. of the Trade Union of T/C teachers.
The main speaker was AKEL S.G., Andros Kyprianou, who accused the Government for its stance towards the Syrian and the Cyprus’ issue by sending a message of “resistance to imperialism that keeps dividing the land setting boundaries with people’s blood. “Syria is drowning in blood near us, but the Government is silent”, as he said and then added that the Government insists on not taking a position for the war in Syria, when AKEL is calling it to clearly reply for the use of British Bases in Cyprus. As he said, AKEL stresses that the use of British Bases or other facilities on the island for military attacks, makes Cyprus a place for starting an attack and consequently a part of the war against Syria and its people and he stressed that “Anastasiades’ Government bear the crucial responsibility of clarifying that our country is out of this war. He judged the government because as he said unfortunately, instead of focusing on how to restart the talks, they just make statements of internal consumption, they manufacture issue and they accuse AEKL for adoption of Turkish positions”. He also sent the message that AKEL will never compromise with he scenario of division, which is Turkey’s position and he called those who compromised with this and they have reconciled with the idea of two states, to honorably and clearly reveal this to Cypriots, AKEL S.G. finally underlined that the march is one more ring of the chain that unites us with the future, “one more strong foundation of our fight for peace and social justice in Cyprus and in the world, of the fight where people will be the winners”.

PEO calls the government to trace and face the phenomenon of unexcused automatic increase in fuel prices noted in profiteering by taking direct measures. By the chance of increases in fuel prices the Consumers Department of PEO issued an announcement complaining for the fact that consumers are once more unprotected against the defining system of fuel prices. The continuous increases in a little time create serious and rational questions to consumers whether there are transparency and right operation conditions of competition which controls take place. PEO also expresses its intense concern for the fact that the fuel increases, that are products of inelastic demand for consumers but they are necessary for employees’ transportation. “The consumersemployees have paid the most for the crisis and it is unacceptable to be victims and unprotected against the defining system of fuel prices. This is not the first time that this phenomenon is noted where the increase in prices of petrol internationally causes directly and automatically increase in fuel prices, in opposition to what goes on when the petrol price is being reduced that no respective reduction in price and time required is noted”, as stated by PEO. PEO stresses that clearly the responsibility of tracing and facing these phenomena belongs mainly to the Government, which has the duty to control and implement measures. The Ministry of Commerce should inform the customers whether these increases are justified. “The Government finally needs to undertake its responsibilities, by taking essential measures for protecting the consumer from profiteering by using all the tools provided by the law including the imposition of plafond on prices for some time”, as stressed by PEO.

Government should undertake its responsibilities to protect consumers

фаил, а также представители национальных Советов Мира и Солидарности из Сирии, Палестины и Великобритании. С главным докладом выступил Генеральный секретарь АКЕЛ (Партия трудового народа Кипра) Андрос Киприану. Он обвинил правительство Республики Кипр в соучастии в смерти тысяч людей на территории от сектора Газа до Сирии. По словам Киприану, «в то время как Сирия тонет в крови», Совет министров «сохраняет преступное молчание». Генсек АКЕЛ добавил, что несмотря на ужасы войны, происходящие рядом с нами, «Правительство Анастасиадиса – ДИСИ вместо того, чтобы придерживаться принципиальной позиции и требований для народов нашего региона, ведёт себя совершенно иначе». Кроме того, Генеральный секретарь отметил, что Правительство не желает определить свою позицию по отношению к войне в Сирии, тогда как АКЕЛ требует от него честного и прямого ответа в отношении использования британских военных баз на Кипре. АКЕЛ подчёркивает, что использование британских баз или размещение военных инфраструктур на острове, превращает Кипр в плацдарм нападения, а следовательно, – делает его составной частью военных действий против Сирии и её народа. Киприану осудил Правительство Анастасиадиса за то, что вместо того, чтобы сконцентрировать все усилия над восстановлением переговорного процесса по кипрской проблеме, власти обвиняют партию, что она согласна с турецкими тезисами о разделе страны. Он заявил, что его партия никогда не согласится со сценарием раздела страны. Генеральный секретарь АКЕЛ призвал тех, кто смирился с этой идеей, прояснить свою позицию по проблеме разделённого острова, честно и прямо сказав об этом кипрскому народу.
ПРАВИТЕЛЬСТВО ОБЯЗАНО ЗАЩИЩАТЬ ПОТРЕБИТЕЛЕЙ ПЕО обратилась с призывом к Правительству, чтобы оно противостояло феномену неоправданного автоматического спекулятивного повышения цен на топливо, приняв для этого самые неотложные меры. Отдел потребителей при ПЕО выступил с Заявлением, в котором осудил спекулятивные действия владельцев бензозаправок, в результате которых потребители в очередной раз остались беззащитными перед системой определения цен на топливо. Повторное повышение цен на горючее за столь короткое время вызывает серьёзные и вполне оправданные вопросы у потребителей. Их интересует гласность, антагонизм и контроль при определении цен. «Трудящиеся-потребители заплатили наиболее дорогую цену за кризис и поэтому недопустимо, чтобы они оставались незащищёнными жертвами системы назначения цен на горючее», – отмечает в своём документе ПЕО. Федерация заявляет, что ответственность по предотвращению подобного феномена целиком и полностью лежит на правительстве, которое обязано не только осуществлять контроль, но и применять необходимые меры. Министерство торговли должно ставить в известность потребителей об оправданности увеличения цен на топливо.
