Big bi-communal event in honor of the 70-years after the striking fights in 1948 70 years have passed after the hard and heroic class-oriented fights of the modern history of Cyprus. This year, we are honoring the 70-year anniversary from the heroic fights of the G/C and T/C Miners and Builders in 1948 with bright events all over Cyprus. In such an event held by PEO and the T/C Trade
Union DEV-Is, G/C and T/C syndicalists and workers honored the pioneer fights that fought against the local and foreign reaction. The event was held at the occupied Lefka on 23 September. “Through these fights of 1948 the labour class believed in its forces, gained self-confidence and obedience, it was taught the value of organization and created strong bonds of solidarity and alliance with the other oppressed social layers of the country”, as PEO S.G., Pambis Kyritsis, stressed in his speech during the revelation of the memorial devoted to the heroic strikers in occupied Lefka. As he noted, 70 whole years have passed after the
hard and heroic fights in the country’s modern history. Especially in this area, at Lefka’s mines and workshop of Xeros, together as genuine class-oriented sibling, thousands of G/C and T/C workers fought against the local and foreign reaction and won. “Unfortunately, Cyprus’ enemies found the way later on to undermine this valuable resource of class-oriented fraternization, by using the extreme nationalistic cycles in both communities as a tool”. If Cypriots, both G/C and T/C, as he stressed, remained united during the fights against the British colonization, if the relations were not poisoned by chauvinism, the political fights for the future of our common country would have the same winning results with the class-oriented fights in 1948. With regard to the current conditions, P. Kyritsis stressed that although 70 years have passed since then, unfortunately the people’s gains and labour rights are doubted today. “Neoliberalism and deregulation of labour relation is more and more being established as a major policy, resulting to the dramatic widening of the social inequality, the destruction of the social state and the strengthening of the procedure transforming poor people to poorer ones and rich to richer ones”, as he said. There were also greeting speeches by the President of the T/C Trade Union DEV-IS, Hasan Felek, the mayor of Lefka and two veteran strikers.
РАБОЧАЯ ТРИБУНА ДВУОБЩИННЫЕ МЕРОПРИЯТИЯ В ЧЕСТЬ ПАМЯТНОЙ ДАТЫ Прошло 70 лет со времени самых жёстких и героических классовых сражений шахтёров греков-киприотов и турок-киприотов, которые происходили в современной истории нашей страны. В воскресенье, 23 сентября, в оккупированной деревне Левка состоялось мероприятие, посвящённое героическим забастовочным выступлениям 1948 года горняков и строителей, занятых на добыче асбеста. Это торжественное мероприятие было проведено совместными усилиями ПЕО и турко-кипрской профсоюзной организацией ДЕВ-ИШ. Генеральный секретарь ПЕО Памбис Кирицис, выступая с докладом на церемонии открытия в Левке памятника героям-горнякам, подчеркнул: «Результатом сражений 1948 года стало то, что рабочий класс поверил в свои силы, приобрёл самоуважение и дисциплину, осознал значение организованности масс. Кроме того, он укрепил узы солидарности и союза с другими угнетёнными категориями населения страны. Именно в этом регионе, где находятся шахты Левки и машинное отделение Ксероса, был дан пример настоящего классового братства. Здесь киприоты греки и турки вели жёсткую и неравную борьбу против своих и пришлых реакционеров, в которой рабочий класс одержал победу. К сожалению, позднее враги Кипра нашли дей-
ственный способ уничтожения классового братства. В качестве подходящего инструмента они использовали крупные национальные круги обеих общин. Если бы киприоты греки и турки оставались сплочёнными и в сражениях против британских колонизаторов, если бы на отношения общин не повлиял яд шовинизма, то политические сражения за будущее нашей общей Родины имели бы такой же успех, как и сражения 1948 года». Говоря о современных условиях, Кирицис отметил, что, к сожалению, несмотря на прошедшее семидесятилетие народные завоевания и трудовые права оспариваются и становятся объектами жёстких непрекращающихся нападок. Он подчеркнул, что постоянно всё сильнее неолиберализм и пересмотр трудовых отношений утверждаются в качестве доминирующей политики. В результате этого увеличивается социальное неравенство, уничтожается социальное государство и усиливается процесс превращения бедных в ещё более бедных, а богатых – в более богатых. К присутствующим на мероприятии также обратились: Президент профсоюзной организации ДЕВИШ Хасан Фелек, мэр Левки и ветераны забастовки 1948 года грек-киприот и турок-киприот.

We won’t tolerate profiteering against us any more The latest increases in retail fuel prices create for one more time the impression to all of us that there is an apathy regarding this issue on behalf of the government, in finding a solution to this really serious issue. Within the frameworks of the discussion made in the Finance Committee at the Parliament, the competent Minister alleged that there is no problem with the fuel prices, while in the society there are many unanswered questions for the method that the fuel price is estimated, how this is related to the increases and reductions on international fuel prices and the way the Government handles this issue. For all these questions, the consumer receives no answer while they hear the competent Minister saying the unacceptable statement that there is no problem with the fuel prices and that we have the lowest taxation in fuels. The great increases in the fuel prices bring back to the surface the issue of consumption tax on fuels that the Government must reevaluate and have a proposal for its reduction. Also, the Ministry of Commerce, under such conditions, since a problem is traced regarding the definition, should intervene and find solutions. The consumers’ associations and all the consumers must react dynamically and send the message that we will not tolerate profiteering phenomena against us.

СПЕКУЛЯЦИЯ НА ТОПЛИВЕ НАНОСИТ УЩЕРБ НАРОДУ Последнее увеличение розничных цен на топливо в очередной раз производит впечатление на каждого из нас, поскольку отмечается полная бездеятельность со стороны властей отыскать решение по столь серьёзному вопросу. В парламентском комитете по финансам ответственный министр заявил, что нет никаких проблем в ценах на топливо, тогда как в обществе существует множество оставшихся без ответов вопросов о способе ценоназначения на него. По всем имеющимся насущным вопросам потребитель не получает никаких ответов, но слышит от министра, что у нас в стране самое низкое налогообложение на топливо. Значительное увеличение цены на топливо возвращает к вопросу налога на его потребление, который Правительство обязуется пересмотреть и представить предложение по его снижению. Министерству торговли при наличии проблемы с определением цен необходимо вмешаться, чтобы найти приемлемое решение. Союзы потребителей, а также мы все, – простые потребители, должны выразить свой резкий протест и заявить о том, что не намерены терпеть феномен спекуляции, наносящей нам ущерб.
