We would like you to describe the services offered to British nationals that reside on Crete or wish to visit the island. I suppose there will be queries on matters of daily living and getting by on Crete. Consular staff are here to help UK nationals when things go wrong while they are abroad. Our assistance ranges from general advice to support and help with serious problems. Around 3,5 million British tourists visit Greece each year and

included 6 meetings in Perama, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia, Chania and Apokoronas. We make every effort to ensure we reach as many people and areas as possible. Our advice to British residents in Greece is to regularize their status by registering with the competent Greek authorities. More information on how to do that is available on our Living in Greece Guide on gov.uk. We also encourage people to sign up for email notifications in order to receive updates automatically. What are the biggest problems Britons who live permanently on Crete report to you? Are there issues with public services, the services provided to them, or with practical matters more generally? We consistently hear that British residents constitute a valued community on Crete, as you would expect, given the strong and close

ties between Greece and the UK. People are mostly interested in practical matters; they want to ensure that after Brexit they will be able to continue living their lives broadly as they do now. Those Britons who are legally resident in Greece before the end of 2020 will see their rights protected even in the event of a no-deal scenario. We have been working closely with the Greek authorities and are pleased to see they have now passed legislation to protect residency rights of UK nationals, even in a no-deal scenario. But for their rights to be protected, UKNs will have to follow specific administrative procedures. Most issues reported to us have to do with registration processes and the exchange of UK-issued driving licences for the Greek licence. We encourage people to contact our vice consulates and bring those issues to our attention because we can then follow up with the Greek

authorities, who have consistently been helpful and cooperative on these matters. We also know there are people who spend time in both countries throughout the year, many own property in Crete and have strong community ties both in the UK and Greece. Those people will need to decide whether they consider Greece to be their official place of residence. They can continue to hold residency in the UK, but in that case they may face limitations as to the amount of time they are able to spend visa-free in Greece.

Our job is not about the politics, rather it is to advise and provide a service. Do British residents follow the developments in the UK or do they abstain? Many British residents do follow political developments in the UK closely. They are reasonably very interested in understanding how the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exit from the EU might affect them, while living in an EU country like Greece.

Crete, the 5th biggest Med Island, lies in the southern frontier of Europe. Crete combines mountains and sea, the new alongside with the old and ancient with contemporary history. It is a cultural crossroad due to its strategic geographical position. English, German, French, Russian and other languages are widely spoken in tourist resorts. The climate is a factor that greatly contributes to its attractiveness. The Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of Chrysopigi lies a short distance from the town of Chania on the route to Souda harbour. It is built near the airport of Chania, in the position Tzobomylos of the Cape Melecha and at the foothills of Stavros Mount. The distance from Chania is only 15km. Gouverneto Monastery. The actual Monastery complex was built from 1537 till 1548. According to tradition, it was connected with miraculous St John the Hermit, and was used for the housing of the Saint’ s pilgrims. Ancient Aptera This site is located 15 km South-east of Chania, near the village Megala Chorafi a. The strategic location of the city with two ports, Minoa (modern Marathi) and Kissamos (near Kalives today) at the entrance of the natural bay, which guaranteed the possibility to control the movement of trade, boosted its growth. Ancient Falasarna The site of the ancient Falassarna located on the western edge of Cap Gramvousa the west coast of Crete. The town was surveyed again in the 19th century by English tourists, who identified the village and closed the port. Ancient Lissos The ruins of Lissos are saved between Paleochora and Sougia. It

Caves Cave of Panos or Lera The cave “Panos or Lera” is developed in Mount Vardies, at an altitude of 70m., in the settlement Stavros Kydonias. It consists of an “antechamber” and four rooms with chiselled cavities, which have been explained as places for the welcome of statues. Cave of Asfentos The cave “of Asfentos” is situated at the position”Skordolakia”, at the westeastern part of the beginning of the gorge of Asfentos .

Venizelos Tombs One of the most popular spots offering a panoramic view of Chania are the Venizelos family tombs, a few kilometres east of the city, on the road to Akrotiri and the airport. Old Harbour Chania’s old Venetian Harbor is the most picruresque and world wide known site seen of the hole Crete. Lots of choices to drink your coffee, to have lunch or dinner in the restaurants or enjoy shopping time. Stavros Stavros is located on Akrotiri, only 13km from Chania, 3km from the airport and 10km from Souda harbour. One of the finest beaches for swimming. British Commonwealth War Cemetery in Souda Bay The War cemetery is a quiet and restful place for the allied forces who lost their lives here on the Battle of Crete in 1941. Aghia Marina Agia Marina is one of the most important tourist resorts of Chania. Great beach for swimming and lots of choices for shopping, eating and clubbing. MUNICIPALITY OF PLATANIAS Thodorou Just a few miles to the north west of the port of Chania. The island is a nature reserve and it is therefore forbidden to go ashore, except that is for one day a year (8 June), when visitors are allowed to take the path to the church and back in order to worship. Platanias The heart of tourism in western Crete. Everything can be found in Platanias... swimming, eating, clubbing, shopping. A “must” place to visit or stay. Samaria Gorge If you come to Chania and you don’t pass through the Samara Gorge then your visit is just... incomplete. The Samariá Gorge is a National Park of Greece, a major tourist attraction of the island and a World’s Biosphere Reserve. A must for visitors to Crete is to complete the walk down the gorge from the Omalos plateau to Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. The village of Samariá lies just inside the gorge. It was finally abandoned by the last remaining inhabitants in 1962 to make way for the park. MUNICIPALITY OF SFAKIA Frangokastello The castle of Frangokastello stands since centuries. It reminds of the Venetians, Turks and Greeks, battles and blood, slaughters and sacrifices. The legends are still alive, taking us in their own world and left the “Drosoulites”, visiting us again some magic mornings. Sfakia The south-eastern region of the Prefecture of Chania is called Municipality of Sfakia and includes the villages Hora Sfakion, Anopoli, Agios Ioannis, Agia Roumeli, Asfendou, Loutro, Patsianos, Skaloti, Impros, Askifou and Fragkokastello. The distamce to Chania is about 70 kilometres. Entire Sfakia is characterized by the natural beauty of wild mountainous landscape which is combined unique with the sea. Loutro The village was named by the baths that were found there. The water was coming from Anopoli. Between the old buildings that you can see there, there is also the goverment building that was used during the revolution at 1821. From Loutro you can visit the ruins of ancient Aradenas with the Byzantine church of archangel Michail and Anopolis. Perfect place for a weekend escape. Aghia Roumeli It is a coastal settlement in south-western Crete and it allocates a wide beach while the access is feasible only with boats from Hora Sfakion, via Loutro and from Palaiochora or Sougia, while the village does not allocate road access. Constitutes popular tourist destination because it is located at the southern entry of the Gorge of Samaria, the biggest

gorge in Greece and one of the biggest in Europe with a length of 18 kilometres. MUNICIPALITY OF APOKORONAS Kalyves Picturesque village located about 20 kilometres east of Chania, in one of the greenest areas of Greece. The village It is surrounded by wonderful sandy beaches with crystalline waters like Kalyves and Kiani Akti. Good place for shopping with lots of traditional tavernas. Just 3 km away is Almyrida, with traditional travernas to enjoy lunch after your swimming.

When the weather is fine it is possible to walk to the island through the shallow water. The island is a protected nature reserve. On the mainland the 17th century Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is approximately 5 km from the island. One of the best places for swimming in the whole world

Georgioupolis A resort village 43 km east of Chania, about 22 km west of Rethymno. Formerly a small fishing village, Georgioupolis is very much a tourist town now, with many cafés, tavernas and small hotels and apartment blocks.

Gramvousa-Balos At the north western point of Crete you will find Gramvousa, a small island with an impregnable castle, a fortress, a masterpiece of the 16th century, and Balos, the unique lagoon of Crete, with its blue green waters, it pink sandy beach and famous shells! An impressive and unique environment of steep rocks and cliffs, an immense blue sea and hidden sandy beaches, and the serene lagoon of Balos, combines with the remains of the long lasting history of the region: monasteries, churches and the imposing castle of Imeri Gramvousa.

MUNICIPALITY OF KANDANOS-SELINO Sougia Located in a distance of 70 roughly km south-western of Chania. It is built in the ruins of the ancient Syias where mainly in the Roman and first Byzantine period people lived here. Saved ruins are vaulted graves and water reservoirs from the Roman period and a church from the 4th century with eminent mosaics. Nice beach where you can have free camping. Paleochora Located in the south-western part of the prefecture. The distance to Chania is about 70 kilometres. It is built on a peninsula between two beautiful bays where it is rained by the Lybian Sea and it is right to consider it the “Nymph of the Lybian Sea” and “Land of the sun”. The movement in the region is high in summertime, on one side from the excursionists choosing it as the harbour of departure to the Island of Gavdos, Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Sfakia and return from the Samaria Gorge, on the other from the holiday-makers that select it as a place of their summer vacations.Palaiochora has all the benefits the visitor needs as banks, doctors, supermarket, drugstores, police, post, Hellenic Telecommunications Organization, port authority, custom, cinema, bars, disco, and rented cars.

MUNICIPALITY OF GAVDOS Gavdos is a small island which is located 26 naval miles (48 kilometres) southern of Crete and it’s extent is 27 square kilometres. It is the most southern Greek and simultaneously European point with population of 98 residents. Perfect for a daily cruise.

The church hosts the town’s archaeological museum and houses treasures from the Minoan to the Hellenistic period. A little further away, 7 out of the original 17 docks (Neoria) can be found (14th-16th cent. AD). Eye-capturing is the Great Arsenal, which today is used as a convention and exhibition centre. Monastery of Pasinos. It is a complex of monasteries built during the Venetian rule (16th century). It architectural style is western, the church being placed in the centre of the complex.

Early Christian Basilica at Almyrida Apokoronou. It is an early Christian three-aisled basilica of the second half of the 6th century. The church of St George in the centre of Kournas, a settlement with interesting folk architecture. It was built at the end of the 12th century.

They found the remains of a temple, possibly dedicated to Artemis and Apollo. Souda’s Castle The castle is built on the islet of Souda, and protected the port of Souda and Chania. It occupies almost the entire island. Built in 1715 and surrendered to the Ottomans in 1715. On Feb-

ruary 14 the Greek fl ag was raised, lowering the Turkish and giving the signal that there is now the Greek sovereignty over the island of Crete. Archaeological site of ancient Anopolis The archaeological site of ancient Anopolis located 87 km south of Chania. Anopolis was an independent city during the classical times and fl ourished during the Roman and Byzantine times. Firkas Castle Castle Firkas was built in the 16th century by the Venetians to protect the city of Chania. There Venizelos declared the offi cial union of Crete with Greece. Today it hosts the Maritime Museum and a small theater. Intzedin Castle

At the border of the town with the cape (Akrotiri) are the graves of Eleftherios and Sofocles Venizelos. The town of Chania, the first capital of Crete, kept its historical heritage of so many centuries almost unaffected. Its atmosphere attracted scientists, philosophers, poets and artists of different origins and it became a cultural centre.

reminds us of the existence of Venetian Archives. Near there, the excavation of ancient Kydonia and the ruins of the church of St. Maria of Mirakoli (1615) are located. At the “stivanadika”, which is still characterised by Eastern features, one can buy leather goods. Next to that is the building of Chrisostomos and the new public Art Gallery. In the old Turkish neighbourhood Splantzia is the square of the former monastery οf St. Nicholas (1204) with a bell-tower and minaret. The Minoan civilisation left behind grand tombs, interesting ceramics and objects. In the neighbourhood of Topanas with its narrow paved streets, the visitor meets Venetian manors with elaborately decorated facades and Turkish houses with architectural protrusions. There we can find Fort Firkas, the Naval Museum and the church of San Salvatore of the Francheskan Monks (15th - 17th cent. AD) which hosts the Byzantine collection of Chania. The Monastery of Saint George in Karydi (in Apokoronas Province) is located about 2km east of Vamos village. The monastery was abandoned for many years but was restored in 1996 and today it is operating normally.

The Holy Monastery of Partenon or Life-Giving Spring was founded by the Bishop of Kisamos & Selinon Anthimos Leledakis in 1905-1910. It was renovated between 1962 and 1965, by Bishop Irineos Galanakis.

Located 14 km east of Chania. Has been characterized as historical monument. Built in 1872 in the position of the tower was built in 1646 by the Turks, who drove the Venetians. The name comes from the name of the son of Sultan Abdul Aziz Intzedin. Has been used as a prison for political prisoners, among them which has been the El. Venizelos. During the dictatorship of Pangalos many dissidents jailed, and when the dictatorship fell, Pangalos was imprisoned there too. Finally, from the isolation rooms of Yaros, in 1948, the fi rst communist political prisoners were moved there. Ancient Polirinia The ancient city was Polirinia in place of the village Polirinia Kissamos, 49 km west of Chania. At the top of the hill was the citadel of which was T-shaped, from where the view was immense, from Crete to the Libyan Sea, which stretched the realm.

Cave of Agia Sofia The cave of “Agia Sofia” is at the western walls of the gorgo of Topolia, at a distance of 47 km from the city of Chania. It consists of two rooms on different levels.

The cemetery is 3km south up the winding paved road. The 4,465 men buried here fell in the Battle of Crete in May of 1941. The Germans landed at the small airport of Maleme when they attacked Crete.

The monastery of Panagia Chrisoskalitissa is located 72km south of Chania, very close to the magnifi cent lagoon of Elafonissi. It operates as a nunnery and reminds of a fortress, perched on a 35m high rock with boundless sea views.

St George of Mythimna - Kisamos. The single-room, vaulted church of St George in the archeological site of Methymna, near Drapania of Kisamos, was built during the fi rst half of the 15th century, in the place of a late Roman Bath.

Should I rest or should I load?

How to recover following an acute soft tissue injury Soft tissue injuries (muscles, ligaments and tendons), are inevitable events during the career of almost every athlete. These injuries usually occur following an impact force from an external stimulus, when there is a contact-related history or due to strain and/or compression load in the non-contact cases. Most of the non-contact injuries are related with doing too much too fast, after doing too little for too long. Over the past decades, R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) was the main approach to the management of acute soft tissue injuries, but its effectiveness is being questioned by researchers. This article provides enriched updated recommendations for optimum and efficient acute soft tissue injury management (from rest & recovery phase, to progress to exercise and return to performance), based on a recently published review of research. What is necessary in an acute injury? All injuries at their initial stage, have to undergo a healing process which is vital to enhance tissue remodelling & recovery. According to the recent data, soft tissue injuries on their immediate care simply need P.E.A.C.E. The acronym arises from Protection, Elevation, Avoid anti-inflammatory modalities, Compression & Education. Protection over the first days of an injury is required to minimise bleeding, prevent distension of injured fibres and reduce risk of injury aggravation by unloading the injured limb and restricting movements that would increase pain. Elevation while resting (positioning the limb higher than the heart), promotes interstitial fluid flow out of the injured area. Despite the lack

of evidence in its use, elevation is still considered as safe given its low risk-benefit ratio. Avoid anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID’s) and ice use over the first 48h as it may potentially disrupt the inflammation process and lead to impaired tissue regeneration on the longterm tissue healing. As the various phases of inflammation contribute to optimal soft tissue regeneration, inhibiting such an important process using medication or ice is not recommended. When appropriate, NSAID’S dosage should always be prescribed by a licensed health care professional. Compression (external mechanical pressure) on the injured area, with the use of taping methods, limits intra-articular oedema & tissue haemorrhage. Compression also improves quality of life in ankle sprain injuries. Patient information and education is a major contributing factor and should always be provided by a specialised health professional on these topics in order to raise realistic expectations on the rehabilitation times. Instead of looking a magic treatment approach up on “Dr” Google, you should consult your physician or physiotherapist to learn more about the nature of your injury condition, recovery times, and how to apply load management. How much rest is enough? You should first worry about complete healing and then about the rest & recovery management, as these are key ingredients in any training program. If you don’t allow your body the time needed to recover properly, and instead you push it into exercise the injury won’t heal, while it is also likely to turn into an overuse/chronic condition with persistent symptoms. Chronic pain is a much greater threat to your sports performance

than resting! In general, it’s feasible to rest/protect an injury while still maintaining fitness with modified exercising even from the first days. How much rest is required prior to exercise introduction, is in general determined by the pain presence and the nature of the injury. In a recent study, a group of athletes with muscle injuries, who were introduced to exercise sooner (2 days post-injury), they shortened the interval from injury to pain-free recovery, and returned to sports 3 weeks earlier compared to the athletes who rested for 9 days (see figure). No increased risk of injury recurrence was identified between the two groups. Most of the references set at least a 48h rest period for muscle strains. When can I progress to training? (loading phase) When the acute symptoms subside and there is no aggravation in specific movements, pain behaviour is guiding the removal of protection and gradual reloading. At this stage, rehabilitation must be driven by L.O.V.E. where the acronym consists of Load, Optimism, Vascularisation & Exercise. Optimal loading during the subacute phase of recovery promotes the long-term tissue repair and remodelling, the capacity of tendons, muscles and ligaments. Optimal load as well as persistent pain man-

agement for athletes, has been described in an article on June’s 2019 edition (issue no. 68 Vol. 7 page 19). The mental status of the athlete has a key role in sports injury rehabilitation, as emotional distress can decrease significantly the recovery rate. A successful rehabilitation should be driven by consistency, optimism and trust between the coach, the athlete and the sports physiotherapist.A pain-free aerobic exercise represents a cornerstone in the management of musculoskeletal injuries as it boosts athlete’s motivation while at the same time it increases blood flow and facilitates vascularisation to the injured structures. It has also been highlighted that it improves function, work status, optimism while reducing the need for painkillers. Cardiovascular activity is recommended to be introduced as soon as possible, although there are no guidelines on dosage. As a conclusion, systematic exercise restores mobility, strength, endurance proprioception, agility and other important aspects of fitness capability, in order to return to desired sports performance. Progression in any activity is been guided by symptoms behaviour and comprehensive design. Any implementation of the provided information should be individualised to fit the biopsychosocial profile of each athlete.

Summer Safety Tips for Your Pet With the warm summer months just around the corner, you and your pet will soon be enjoying the sunshine and outdoors together. But higher temperatures can increase the risks of dehydration, injuries, and even heat stroke. Before you head out for summer fun, take the necessary steps to keep your pet safe, healthy and happy this season. Safe Pet Food Storage The change in weather can result in more ants and other insects entering your home which increases the risk of insect infestation of open packages of pet food and treats. Proper pet food and treat storage helps preserve freshness and the nutritional quality, and also is critical to avoid common pet food pests. Some guidelines to keep the bugs out include: Check pet food packaging at the store. Inspect packaging carefully for rips or tears that may have occurred during transport. Also ensure that the package is still properly sealed. Once you’ve brought the item home, review any storage guidance provided by the manufacturer. In general, dry foods and treats should be stored off of the floor, and in a cool, dry location. Once a bag of dry pet food has been opened, it should be stored it in a tightly sealed container. Open cans or packets of wet and fresh food should be kept sealed or covered and refrigerated. If insects are found in the food or treat package after you’ve brought them home, you should contact both the retailer and manufacturer. Dehydration Don’t forget that water is an essential nutrient for our dogs and cats, and they need a constant supply of fresh water in order to maintain essential body functions. Here are some ways to keep your pet hydrated, especially in the warm summer months:

Keep your pets water bowl replenished regularly with fresh water. Many cats especially love moving water. If your cat is not drinking from a water bowl, try leaving a dripping faucet on or purchase a water fountain which will encourage your cat to drink water. If you’re hitting the road this summer for vacation, be sure to take plenty of water with you and let your dog out for bathroom breaks whenever necessary. With warmer temperatures, your dog can become thirsty more quickly with any activity. Make sure to bring a portable water bowl with you on all your summer outings, including walks around the block, jogs through the neighborhood or playtime at the dog park. At the beach, don’t allow your dog to drink the salty ocean water. Too much salt, like humans, is not good for their health. Bring your own water from home and a bowl to give your pet a drink at the beach. Symptoms of dehydration can include sunken eyes or loss in appetite. If your pet is experiencing dehydration, take them to a vet, who can provide additional fluids and medical support. Heat In the summer, temperatures can heat up quickly and be harmful to your pet. In addition to keeping your pet hydrated, consider these safety precautions to keep your pet safe and cool. The summer sun can cause pavement to become extremely hot. Hot pavement can damage your dog’s paw pads. Inspect your dog’s paws after walks and take note if your pet appears to be limping. Just like humans, dogs can suffer from heat stroke, too. Symptoms can include excessive panting, weakness or dizziness, pale gums or excessive salivation. If you believe that your dog is suffering from heat stroke,

work to cool them down (such as placing cold wet towels on them) and take your pet to the vet immediately. Remember that certain factors, such as obesity or old age, can increase your dog’s risk for heat stroke. Budget their time outdoors in the heat accordingly. Never leave your dog in a parked car in warm weather, even if you are in the shade or leaving the pet alone for just a few minutes. The interior of the car can become significantly warmer than the outside temperature after just a few minutes and poses a risk to your pet’s life. Even if you are just running a quick errand, leave your dog in your air-conditioned house. During outdoor activities, including walks, festivals and other outings, take frequent breaks with your pet and find a shady spot to relax out of the sun. Yes, even pets can get sunburns! If your dog is a hairless breeds or has especially short or light hair, you may want to consider pet-specific sunscreen. Exercise With warmer weather, there are many more opportunities to stay active with your pet. Walking, running, swimming, playing at the dog park and trips to the beach are all great summer activities for you and your pet. Exercise is a vital component of your pet’s overall well-being. Keep these safety tips in mind while you get out with your pet this summer: Consider the timing of your walks and other activities. The temperatures are much cooler in the early morning and late evening hours. But remember to take frequent breaks in the shade and bring water with you, no matter what time you head out of the house. Not all dogs know how to swim. And even some that do may struggle on getting out of the pool, lake or river.

Purchase a life vest for your dog and put it on them during water activities, such as swimming, boating and sailing. Always keep a close eye on your pet when near water. If you’re a jogger, always warm up your pet with a 10-minute walk prior to speeding it up to a jog or run. You should also allow time for cooldown and recovery when you’ve completed your activity. Before letting your pet off the leash at the beach, check for sharp objects and hidden dangers. Beaches can have coral, shells and jellyfish which can injure your pet’s paws. When you head back home, double check your pet’s feet for any injuries. Consult your veterinarian if you’re starting a new exercise routine to ensure your pet is healthy enough for the exercise you have planned. Poisons Summertime means more cookouts with family and friends. While you may enjoy the food at the family barbeque, keep in mind that many foods humans eat are toxic to pets. Consumption of the following items can be seriously harmful to your pet, causing symptoms such as vomiting, anemia, irregular heart rhythm and seizures: Chocolate Avocado Garlic and Onions Grapes and Raisins Macadamia Nuts Hops (fresh and cooked) Alcohol Also, remember to never feed your pet table scraps.
