SITE ANALYSIS
Time: 10/2023 - 11/2024
Location: Shanghai, China
Scale: 1.5Ha
Classification: Landscape Research
Key concern: River water purification; Increase connectivity
The site, formerly a building materials dock, has a legacy of water pollution, low connectivity due to the isolation of both sides of the river, large unused areas within the site, and low land utilization.
Site history and current situation
GENERATE SITE DESIGN WHILE SOLVING PROBLEMS
Water pollution, low connectivity and low land utilization rate are the three main problems to be solved in this project, which are mainly solved by modifying the river direction, creating a cross-river road system, adding topography and soil covering buildings and other strategies.

ABANDONED STEEL MILLS WITH HEAVY POLLUTION
The site is surrounded by a large number of industrial areas and a small number of residential areas.
Classification: Landscape Research
Key concern: The role of ferns; Pollution from heavy industry
1. Areas with low biodiversity 2. The polluted area
Industrial heritage area
CURRENT PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
Low biodiversity, soil pollution and too many building sites are three problems that need to be addressed. The site was reinvigorated by filling in excavations, demolishing redundant buildings and introducing ferns.
ISSUES
Low biodiversity
Soil pollution
Industrial building site
Fill excavation to transform the terrain
Soil modification
Railway track reconstruction landscape
STRATEGY OPERATION RESULT
Build wetlands
Absorption of heavy metals (Hg,Cd) by ferns
Industrial plant renovation porch
Increased biodiversity
Soil pollution problem solved
Industrial site reuse
WHY CHOOSE FERNS?
Through a large number of studies, it is found that ferns have multiple values in nature and can perfectly solve the problems left in the site.
VEGETATION RESTORATION PROCESS
In 25 years, more plants will appear on contaminated soil, and biodiversity will increase.

Beijing's transportation system has changed in the past 14 years
SITE: GREEN SPACE UNDER VIADUCT
Issue A: Stormwater crisis
Issue B: Poor accessibility
SITE
Urban roads cut space, making it difficult for residents to access green Spaces and low accessibility.
Car exhaust emissions cause air pollution, and honking leads to serious noise pollution.
Problem B: Noise and exhaust pollution
Problem C: Poor accessibility
Problem A: Stormwater crisis
THREE STRATEGIES TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS
Strategy A: Rainwater collection
Strategy B: Vegetation
Strategy C: Road generation

SECTION A-A'
The landscape design solves the problem of storm flood by forming undulating terrain, and at the same time, plants are planted to alleviate the noise and air pollution caused by traffic flow, and the overhead walkway is added to solve the problem of low accessibility caused by overpasses and surrounding roads.
SECTION B-B'
URBAN GREEN SPACE AFTER ACTIVATION
View from the edge of the site
The undulating terrain is conducive to the collection of rainwater, resisting the negative impact of rainwater on the city, and enriching the viewing
Overhead view from the pedestrian bridge
The addition of a pedestrian bridge not only makes the site more accessible on both sides of the road, but also provides an overhead view of the overall site.

GREENWAY NODES PLANNING
"What a great place to walk a dog!"
"Then we can meet here for the weekend!"
Through the interpretation of urban texture and the reorganization of functional space, five node Spaces are formed. Each node corresponds to the population needs of its location, forming a coherent sequence. And to add activity facilities in it, while meeting the needs of residents, revitalize the site.
"Yes, that's right. It's also perfect for me to take my kids for a walk."
"I think it's a great place to sit and have a chat!"
"We can go straight to the subway station!"
URBAN GREENWAY NODES
Public
square
While maintaining the current park pattern, the public square is created as the entrance to the park and the starting point of the urban greenway, breaking the barrier between the semi-enclosed park and the outside world.
Skatepark
Add new and interesting activity nodes such as skateboards to the site, improve the utilization rate of the site, but also provide a place for social entertainment for residents.

Usage analysis
On the basis of preserving the ruins of the Beijing-Zhang Railway, a cultural corridor is set up, aiming to open up the space and simultaneously inherit the culture.
Both sides of the railway are built with terrain and planted with plants to reduce the noise pollution caused by the subway.
Through the vertical design set up water collection garden, to solve the drainage problem and beautify the environment.
