01 IN THE CRACK

LAR6020 Foundation Studio

Instructor: Elizabeth K. Meyer

2021.01-2021.05

As Leonard Cohen said, “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in”. This project finds the opportunities in the cracks and creates a new form and experience of beauty in the campus to encourage the intermingling of different communities, and let in the light of equality and conviviality to these landscapes.

The project seeks opportunities in the crack spaces and imagines what anti-dominating spaces in a dominant system would be: a place where those social systems start to be broken apart; where the hierarchy is challenged and inverted; where admits everyone’s value; where is not covering the unequal history; where we connect to each other.

v

Black Bus Stop- A Crack Space on campus

The beauty and value of black culture was out of sight, segregated and degraded. Once black were admitted as students, they started appropriating places to gather freely. One of these places, the BBS, was like a “Black red carpet” for the performance of everyday and special Black culture: decades of gathering at the BBS on McCormick Road created a “crack” in the conceptual space of the UVA grounds. This design formalizes that crack.

< Hidden Slavery History

For 150 years, black members of the UVA community were oppressed and marginalized, for they were considered ugly and unworthy by some people (GCV) . The lives of the enslaved and free black servants whose labor built and maintained the University were hidden downhill and behind walls.

Design Tactics: materiality and scale

Spatial diagram: defining space by wall and canopy Program diagram: form and function Context diagram: site and concept

DESIGN PROCESS - CRACK AS A METAPHOR

Recognized the history of Black as a crack in the narrative of UVA as a historycally segragated school:

•Extend the tentacle to challenge the exclusive spatial hierarchy

•Form a dissonant beauty through irregular form and material

•Empty the crack center for minority gathering and events

•Break the edge into small cracks to create interatcions between strangers

02 URBAN CAMPUS

Undergrad Studio

Instructor: Liu Cui, Zhiqiang Zeng 2018.08-2019.10

In Wudaokou, called as “ the heart of universe”, there are many university campus. A large population of students and new grad are activly living here. While most of the activities are happened within the campus of each university. And most of the time a gated, students in different school are hard to find a place to gather and stay.

This project tries to build a campus in the context of Wudaokou, and provide the people a place to gather and commemorate beyond the boundary of the campus or which age they are.

A TALE OF TWO ISLANDS

ALAR8010 Research Studio

Instructor: Kate Orff, Pippa Brashear, Greta Ruedisueli, Kirk Gordon

Team: Jieya Yu, Elena Wrobel, Anna Wei

While Hilton Head Island and St. Helena Island share a common histor of plantation, their path have diverged into two very different circumstances today. Hilton Head Island is now a prominent tourist destination dominated by private resorts and high quality golf courses with little evidence remains of its once flourishing Gullah community. St. Helena, on the other hand, because of its ecological landscape, has remained mostly untouched by resort development. Gullah presence has been maintained to an extent and a local community has preserved several historic sites and continued fundamental and cultural education through the Penn Center. Therefore, our group sees an opportunity to protect and preserve Gullah culture and land through a program of co-op eco-cultural tourism, land ownership education, and preservation of the physical landscape.

04 BIG MEADOW INTERPRET

LAR7250 Plant Craft

Instructor: Chloe Hawkins 2022.09 - 2022.12

Perched on top of a mountain, big meadow is a highlight of Shenandoah National Park with its unique character in micro climate, topography, vegetations and animals species. This lush pallate has been a bank of biodiversity.

This project try to bring the inspiration I got while visiting there to the campus ground. Through several design research and test such as human scale mock up and hand drawing, I interpret the complex and huge meadow into a garden composed by two part: the pink slope and plant combo. This two contrast spatial quality marked the two thresholds of the meadow as a whole but with gradient.
