Saint-Saens, Vaughan Williams. Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture by Glinka, Piano Concerto No. 5 in F major, opus 103 (Egyptian) by Saint-Saens and Symphony No. 1 (Sea Symphony) by Vaughan Williams. (Kotato Fukuma (piano), Filipa van Eck (soprano), Conroy Scott (baritone). Mikhail Glinka used Alexander Pushkin’s story of golden rings, gigantic heads, humpbacked women, sleeping spells and the love of a young couple to compose an opera, which is seldom perforned save its overture. Expect elements of Russian folk music and supernatural exoticism. Camille Saint-Saens composed his Piano Concert No.5 in the town of Luxor on the banks of the Nile, integrating music traditions of the Middle East, Arabia and Java. Another metaphysical piece of music is the Sea Symphony, based on Walt Whitman’s poem Leaves of the Grass, and culminating in the “Passage of India”: The earth to be spann’d, connected by network,/ The races, neighbours, to marry and be given in marriage/ The oceans to be cross’d, the distant brought near, The lands to be welded together.
