High Cliff Nature History Center

The wilderness with guests that seeking the native history charm and trace of stone industry, the architecture aims to express these elements in its materials and programs. To present itself as the observer of the history and culture, it stands in front of the lake and look out with people that passing. Slowly guiding the visitors through what the land have witnessed, and what it is now. The building servers as local museum and education center, and to bring emotion of history and nature to the people.

High Cliff Nature History Center

Follow by the last load of limestone went into klins in 1956, the local stone industry faced decline, and the area was assigned to be a nation park short after. The impact to the residents of this industrial town is visible, people started moving out to look for opportunities. This left the local effigy mounds and the landscape of poststone-industry to become its features. Therefore, how to interpret such historical path to the architecture laguage become the next challenge.

The Purple Martin is generally found in open habitats and areas close to water, particularly near or in human settlements.

Humans now provide nearly all nesting sites used by this species to include established structures like birdhouses or nest boxes and gourds The effigy mounds 1000 A.D. and 1500 A.D. They have an unmistakable, chirpy sound that fill each summer day.

The shapes of the effigy mounds are divided into two categories: animal and geometric.

When the birds leave the park in late August, their songs are noticeably absent.

Animal shapes are thought to signify a better status than geometric and the buffalo shape was, most likely, reserved for families of the chief.

site location

A once lively little town of hundreds, Clifton, was the home of a thriving limestone quarry operation.

“Flexed” remains are of the people who died when travelling to the area.

Red Bird chief statue

“Bundle” remains are those of people who died in winter, when the tribe was south.

Today the only remains of the one time boom town of High Cliff are the General Store Museum and the lime kiln ruins.

“Cremated” remains have also been found in some mounds. High Cliff state park

The bodies were then placed in the desired position, usually the head or heart portions of the mound shape.

The State of Wisconsin purchased the land in 1954 to prepare the site for a state park. The woodland tribes that built these mounds are thought to be Siouan origin.

The last load of limestone went into the kilns in September, 1956.

The lakes and rivers were attracted the mound builders to the woods of this area. They provided food and transportation in almost any direction. ea ta Ac ca ia

IV. The project explores the translation of machine learning within architectureal perception. The focus of project heavily related to the process and interpretation of subtle detail that occur as the bi-product of ML outcome. Start with analyzing assigned artist’s project, we pick up the rule set being applied and use that to produce input data images.

Deep Learning House

In this stage, we focus on the multiplicity of iterations, which structure the forming of our final approach to the project and acquire the final output images.

Data Input Iterations

Deep Learning House

We investigate the nuance within the output images and develop a process of manual translation that can clearly demonstrate the relationship with the ML output. In this case, the selected image is rotated 45 degrees for recognition of x-y axises, then create series of rectangles indicate ideas of floor plans bountary. As that is determind, the texture can be interpreted. The reading of stripes, overlapping of colors, the merging of horizontal and vertical, the bluring, and the cutaway of area. All these elements are illustrated within the simplest form of diagrams. Final ML Image for Translation Process

The floor plan diagram suggest thinking of architecture, and we are able to apply the original rule set into the translation of spatiality, which in here are simple extrusion and offsetting height. The texture, interior-exterior relationship, space quality and circulation, all are part of the translation process. As this process go on, we can provide a consistent method to generate 3D massing from 2D images. Ultimately it creates a design associated with both architecture as end-product and machine learning as its platform.

The final outcome as architectural product is a multi-generation housing, and the programs within reflect the transformation that occur during the ML process. The individual floor plans have been manipulated to fit other floor plans above and below, as well as to create circulation that can connect every spaces.

The redesigning process help the understanding of bricks and see the potential of material patterns. The three-stacked brick pattern was introduced to create vertical wave pattern onto the side wall. At the same time, the environmental condition was reconsider. In order to maximum the efficiency of the wall and create special effect, the shear open window pattern was placed so interior can have interesting sun effect in designed time of the day.
