Una robba di velluto nero carica d’alcune mirabili fibbie d’oro e di perle; sulla sommità della fronte un bellissimo e fiammeggiante rubino, dal quale una lucidissima e grossa perla pendeva; e al collo un filo di grossissime, eguali e splendidissime perle, il quale da l’una e l’altra parte del petto scendendo, quasi fin alla cintura n’aggiungea.

I Bentivoglio di Bologna si possono annoverare tra le dieci più importanti famiglie del settentrione d’Italia tra Quattro e Cinquecento.

La loro storia è densa di eventi e particolarmente suggestiva.

Nove di essi si imparentarono con i Gonzaga. Il matrimonio più importante fu quello di Giovanni Gonzaga, fratello del marchese Francesco II e fondatore del ramo cadetto di Vescovato, che il 20 giugno 1491 (o settembre 1493) sposò Laura Bentivoglio, nelle cui vene scorreva anche sangue sforzesco.

I Bentivoglio, divisi in numerose linee cadette, sono di Bologna, Ferrara, Ravenna, Venezia, Modena e Roma.

La famiglia innalza uno stemma che si blasona: Inquartato: nel I e nel IV: trinciato dentato d’oro e di rosso di sette pezzi. nel II e nel III: d’oro alla fiamma di rosso; al capo d’azzurro caricato di tre ramoscelli di quercia ghiandiferi d’oro; al cimiero di un serpente nascente in palo con testa umana femminile.

Il capostipite è Zambone, anche se è da Bentivoglio che la famiglia trae il cognome. Importante figura è un Carlo, di grande valore politico e militare, ambasciatore nel 1455 presso papa Nicola V, da lui creato Conte Palatino. Da Giovanni (II) discendono i Bentivoglio viventi nel XIX secolo, denominati Bentivoglio Sforza Visconti d’Aragona per gli imparentamenti intervenuti, i quali si divisero in due linee di sangue, una delle quali si registra ancora nel 1929.

La prima ha inizio da Ercole (m. 1524) primo dei tredici senatori che si succedettero fino al 1786. Un Ercole di Antonio fu nel 1570 ambasciatore presso la Corte Pontificia. Nel 1718 il grado di senatore passò a un ramo collaterale in Filippo figlio di Ulisse, il cui ramo si estinse nel 1723. Il seggio senatoriale passò allora a Fulvio figlio di Lorenzo; l’ultimo a ricoprire tale prestigiosa carica fu Filippo di Girolamo nel 1770. Da Claudio ebbe origine il ramo cadetto dei Bentivoglio di Modena. Di questa linea (prima) vivevano nel secolo scorso Federica di Ludovico e Giovanna di Annibale di Giovanni.

La seconda linea comincia con Giacomo (m. 1494). Nei primi anni del XVII secolo la famiglia diramò e si stabilì a Firenze. Andalò di Luigi di Domenico ebbe due maschi: Luigi e Decio (m. 1920) al quale sopravvisse Andalò figlio di Annibale di Domenico.

Di questa linea vivevano nel secolo scorso Angela ed Elena.

I Bentivoglio erano patrizi di Ferrara, Ravenna, Bologna e Modena; Conti Palatini e patrizi romani. Il ramo del Conte Claudio venne ascritto al Libro d’Oro della Nobiltà Bolognese. I Bentivoglio d’Aragona dimorarono nel secolo scorso a Venezia. Il ceppo della famiglia bolognese ebbe sovranità sulla città dal 1401, con privilegio di battere moneta. Oltre ai numerosi feudi la famiglia acquisì il Granducato di Spagna e fu aggregata alla Casa d’Aragona e Sforza Visconti. Ebbero nel 1857 un membro ascritto ai Cavalieri di Malta.

Diversi rami cadetti della famiglia si stabilirono in Mantova, Gubbio, Forlì, Ferrara, Venezia. Si registra anche un ramo dei Bentivoglio di Fossombrone, il cui stemma si blasona: Inquartato: nel I e nel IV: trinciato indentato d’oro e di rosso di sette denti; nel II e nel III: d’oro al monte di tre cime di verde su cui posa un corvo fermo al naturale (poi surrogato da un’aquila spiegata di nero).

Nel legame con la famiglia Gonzaga il personaggio più importante è da individuarsi in Laura, che sposò il 20 giugno 1491 Giovanni Gonzaga (fratello del marchese di Mantova Francesco II).

Laura era figlia di Giovanni e Ginevra Sforza, bastarda di Galeazzo dei signori di Pesaro. Morì nel 1523.

The Bentivoglios of Bologna were among the most important families in Northern Italy between the 15th and 16th centuries.

The history is full of events and is particularly fascinating. Nine of them married members of the Gonzaga family. The most important wedding was that of Giovanni Gonzaga, bother of the Marquis Francesco II and founder of the Vescovato branch of the family who, on the 20th of June 1491 (or September 1493), married Laura Bentivoglio, who also had the blood of the Sforza family running through her veins.

The Bentivoglios, split into numerous different family branches, are from Bologna, Ferrara, Ravenna, Venice, Modena and Rome.

The family has a coat of arms which emblazons: Quartered: in the first and fourth quarters: red and gold barrier with seven teeth. in the second and third quarters: gold with a red flame; topped with a blue area featuring three gold oak branches bearing acorns; above there is a snake rising vertically with the head of a woman.

The progenitor of the family is Zambone, although the family takes its surname from Bentivoglio. A certain Carlo was an important figure, of outstanding political and military valour, ambassador in 1455 for Pope Nicholas V, who appointed him Count Palatine. It is from Giovanni (II) that the Bentivoglios who lived in the 19th century descended.

Their full name was Bentivoglio Sforza Viscounts of Aragon, due to the marriages that had been made, and they were split into two bloodlines, one of which was still registered in 1929. The first started with Ercole (who died in 1524), first of the thirteen senators who succeeded one another until 1786. In 1570, a certain Ercole di Antonio was ambassador at the Papal Court. In 1718, the title of senator passed to a collateral branch, to Filippo son of Ulisse, but this branch ended in 1723. The senatorial seat then passed to Fulvio son of Lorenzo; the last man to hold this prestigious office was Filippo of Girolamo in 1770. The family branch of the Bentivoglios of Modena originated from Claudio. Of this line (the first) the descendants that lived during the last century were Federica of Ludovico and Giovanna of Annibale of Giovanni. The second line began with Giacomo (who died in 1494). In the early years of the 17th century, the the family branched out and set up home in Florence.

Andalò of Luigi of Domenico had two sons: Luigi and Decio (who died in 1920), who was survived by Andalò son of Annibale of Domenico.

Of this line, those who lived in the last century were Angela and Elena.

The Bentivoglios were patricians from Ferrara, Ravenna, Bologna and Modena; Counts Palatine and Roman patricians. The branch of Count Claudio was registered in the Golden Book of the Bolognese Nobility.

The Bentivoglios of Aragona lived in the last century in Venice.

The Bolognese branch of the family ruled the city from 1401, with the power to mint currency. Besides the numerous feuds, the family acquired the Grand duchy of Spain and was adjoined to the House of Aragon and Sforza Viscounts. In 1857 a member of the family joined the Knights of Malta. Different branches of the family were established in Mantua, Gubbio, ForlĂŹ, Ferrara and Venice. There is also a branch of the Bentivoglios registered in Fossombrone, the coat of arms of which emblazons: Quartered: in the first and fourth quarters: red and gold barrier with seven teeth; in the second and third quarters: gold with a red flame; topped with a blue area featuring three gold oak branches bearing acorns; gold above three green peaks on which a crow rests (later replaced by an open-winged black eagle). In the link with the Gonzaga family, the most important person is Laura, who married Giovanni Gonzaga on the 20th of June 1491 (brother of the Marquis of Mantua Francesco II). Laura was the daughter of Giovanni and Ginevra Sforza, the illegitimate daughter of Galeazzo of the lords of Pesaro. She died in 1523.
