TWINKLE BINGO 31

BACKGROUND Information flow in the modern age is so wide spread, that children have more access to raw information than ever before. Memorizing simple facts is a rote skill, while critical thinking and problem solving is something that has to be developed with practice. Providing a fun critical thinking game will enable children to think on their own, and solve problems within a controlled environment. That is why we wanted to design this toy, a simple reach the goal game. With a highly modular base board that can be upgraded both in difficulty and theme, it allows future add-ons and upgrade packages to be released at a future date. This will help combat market stagnation and maintain interest in the product with new boards and themes.

Emergence of the "Low-Motivated Generation" In consideration of the widespread of 3C products, young children are used to receive massive amounts of information in early age. Moreover, many helicopter parents are being over protective and dominated of children's lives. Which makes the generation of young kids lack of the ability to make own decisions, the bringing about the emergence of the "Low-Motivated Generation".

The Prevalence of 3C products

Influence of Low-Birth Rate

Nowadays, 3C products are commonly seen as a part of young children's lives. However, for kids before learning period whose brain and body function is not fully ready for fast information, spending too much time on technology devices not only deprive of their chances of exploring the real world, but damaging their brains and bodies permanently.

Because of the low birth rate, people are having less children in families. As a matter of fact, the average expense that parents spending on children’s education and entertainment is actually higher than before. Which is due to the higher income of modern society and parents are paying more attention to children’s education quality. Therefore, the low-birth rate could influence the toy industry in a positive way and urge the industry having higher quality to fit the market trend.

DETAILS Reflector Bricks with Mirrors

Starting Point

These modular bricks are used to reflect and move the laser beam around the board. They are made of a highly reflective acrylic to avoid potentialaccidents if glass was used.

Due to the laser light may cause some damage to children's eyes, we use the low power laser and the reed switch for safety. (Only if the switch contact the magnets which was hided inside the base may activate the laser.)

Designated Waypoint These waypoints denote a location that the lasermust pass through before reaching the Final Goal. The bottom of these Waypoints are hollow toallow the laser beam to pass through them.

33

Obstacles

Final Goal

Each set comes with three different sized obstacles that can be set up to block the light path of the laser. This makes the player actively think about how to get around these obstacles to get to the goal.

The destination of the game, when the laser hits this target, it will make a victory sound to let the players know that their solution worked.

We use a low powered, eye-safe laser as our starting point. For children’s safety, the magnetic switch inside the starting point is activated by a magnet under the board.

These cutout grooves allow the theme boards to be changed out easily.

5mW low power laser

The raised borders keep the laser within the game board itself.

Each theme has 10 stage cards with different difficulty levels. All the user has to do is put the pieces where the card tells them to.

34

HOW TO PLAY Twinkle Bingo is a fun and educational toy which will challenge children to think creatively. The game is simple, use the bricks with mirrors to reflect a low powered laser to the goal. Along the way, move around obstacles and pass through designated way and points until you reach the goal. This game is a fun and exciting way for children to learn critical thinking on their own!

01.

Pick up a stage card.

03.

35

Put the laser light on the designated place according to the stage card.

02.

04.

According to the stage card, put on the theme board first, then arrange the parts.

LEARNING PAD 41

BACKGROUND Electronic media is so widespread these days, that more and more schools are utilizing tablets as teaching tools. The barrier to cost with traditional paper printed text books is slowly becoming a think of the past with e-textbooks and digital media replacements. To prevent wayward students from using these tablets to browsing the internet during class and playing games, we decided to design a tablet which is solely focused as an educational aide.

•New generation of students learn better with electronic mediums.

•U tilization o f APPs and specific programs to learn various subjects.

• Te x t b o o k s c a n q u i c k l y b e c o m e outdated in various fields (history, science, etc.)

• Un lim ite d up da te d e duc a t io n a l resources via the internet.

•Existing text books are less than interactive, and require rote memorization. •Students usually need various pens, pencils and highlighters to take notes for class. •Book bags and the size of modern textbooks are becoming a legitimate weight issue with students.

PROBLEMS & OPPORTUNITYS

•Interactive apps can open up a whole new field for education by combining games with instruction. •Most modern students can take notes and type faster than traditional hand writing. • Tablets are lighter, smaller, and easier to transport than traditional textbooks.

•Students need systematic teaching materials and support with textbooks.

•Students can ask questions through m o n i t o r e d fo r u m s a n d n e t w o r k p la t fo r m s p rov ide d t h ro ugh t h e school.

•Textbooks are heavy, expensive, and require a heavy sunk cost in terms of material, time, and can quickly be outdated by the time they are printed.

•APPS and various other electronic mediums can be updated almost in an instant and require much less capital for updates to the newest versions.
