Summer Program The IBA, LSAMP and Science Alliance had 19 students participate in a fantastic summer program!
Summer Seminars
Navigating a Global Pandemic
Dr. AJ Hinton, postdoctoral research fellow, and Cindy Toll, manager of the Roy J. Carver Center for Genomics (CCG) joined us to discuss how they are navigating research during this time of uncertainty.
Communicating Research
Lori Adams led a brainstorming session to identify all the ways that scientists use written, oral and visual forms of communication to connect with each other and with the general public. We will discuss what is important for the general public to know about your research and strategies for communicating research in an easily digestible way using ABT narrative structure.
Graduate Student Panel
IBA Alumni joined our current students to share experiences, offer tips and advice. We were joined by: Jackie Bannon (Nursing PhD 2019, University of Pennsylvania) Sarah Bannon (Psychology PhD 2020, Stony Brook University) Nicole Cady (Microbiology and Immunology PhD candidate, University of Michigan) Steven Dominguez (Global Health Studies MS 2017; Public Health PhD candidate, Tulane University) Tim Fuqua (Molecular Biology PhD candidate, European Molecular Biology Laboratory), Jorge Moreno (Molecular Biology PhD candidate, Princeton University), William Narhi (Cognitive Psychology PhD candidate, Ohio State University) and Angela Olvera (MD/PhD candidate, University of Wisconsin – Madison).
Rigor and Reproducibility
Dr. Udaykumar from the College of Engineering joined our students to discuss rigor, reproducibility and the public perception of science, especially in response to COVID-19 and climate change
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Workshop
Cueponi Cihuatl Espinoza Madrigal from the Center for Diversity and Enrichment shared her presentation “What do you meme? Digital blackface in today’s society”. She emphasized that we are all responsible for continuing our education and unpacking anti-blackness in society in order to understand, support, and elevate Black people today.
Peer Mentoring
Chelsey Gates and Devon Dawson discussed the value of peer mentoring and ways students can participate in our IBA/LSAMP Peer Mentoring Program. The group was joined by two alumni, Sarah Bannon (Psychology PhD 2020, Stony Brook University) and Jackie Bannon (Nursing PhD 2019, University of Pennsylvania) to discuss the importance of mentoring and their experiences to date.
Three Minute Research Video Presentations
Students practiced their oral science communication skills by crafting and delivering an elevator pitch that communicates some sort of scientific research in a short, concise but engaging manner.

Covid-19 and Its Impact on IBA, LSAMP and Science Alliance This Spring due to the pandemic, all undergraduates were prohibited from research labs. Students and PI had to transition to virtual research or put projects on hold. Housing was not available, but students were able to connect via Zoom for the Summer Seminars as well as complete some research from home. In June labs started to ramp back-up. Some of our students were able return to campus, but a few continued to work on remote projects. Our students and PI’s did an amazing job being flexible this Spring and Summer. Although the students were not able to work full-time in a physical lab, they were still gaining research experience, participating in the weekly seminars, and showcasing their learning at the end of the summer.

Fall Program Information Peer Mentor Program Peer mentoring is all about creating belonging and community for undergraduate researchers! The IBA/LSAMP Peer Mentoring Program is a great opportunity to contribute to students' success and development, build awareness of self, resources in our community, and networking opportunities. Peer Mentors are advanced students in IBA who will be paired with a Peer Mentee who is a newer student or affiliated student (e.g., Science Alliance) to our program. Peer Mentors guide Mentees one-on-one through your experience in and out of the lab. The Peer Mentoring commitment is a semester-long relationship with the expectation that Peer Mentor and Mentee meet at least three times (zoom preferred) during the course of the semester and participants engage in a reflective writing activities, and attend any required programming. More about our program and expectations can be found in our Peer Mentoring Handbook. If interested in participating in the Peer Mentoring program, please email devon-dawson@uiowa.edu to confirm your interest.
