EDITORIAL

I

t’s both an honour and greatly satisfying for me to announce the publication of the book Visagism: Theory of Compensation and Empowerment, edited by the VMV Cosmetic Group Foundation and headed by two renowned professionals: Cruz Sánchez and Gonzalo Zarauza.

Both have brought their experience and that of the rest of the team to this manual, which is currently the only one of its kind. This publication is the first of an educational project that has has its objective the realization of one of my dreams: to create didactic material to help to train professional hairdressers.

Designing an educational project means planning a process to achieve an educational aim, embodied by learning objectives. My aim is to improve and nurture a profession that I feel, I respect and I love as much as possible.

We live in a constantly evolving society, in which people are more informed than ever thanks to the Internet and new technologies. In this context, hairdressing professionals must not be left behind and must continue training to be able to offer clients innovative and different tools. For this reason, we at the Foundation have kick-started this training project, which is unique in the sector.

The first stop on this journey is the visagism manual, with which we hope to improve the quality of services in salons offering the new Beauty Consulting service, which will allow professionals to improve the profitability of their businesses.

And, last but not least, training in a subject that is going to make you stand out from the competition.

New hairdressing professionals need a new training and the VMV Cosmetic Group Foundation wants to respond to their needs properly, with the endorsement of a certificate of quality. For this reason, we are already working on new educational materials, about which I will soon be able to give more details. We hope that, with these tools, and with the desire to make things happen and strive, that these professionals can continue to grow.

arlos Baute is the face of Salerm Cosmetics in 2016. The Venezuelan singer has triumphed in the music world, and now he will do the same in hairdressing salons across the globe, with his image on the most anxiously awaited calendar. He recently released his latest single, entitled “Perdimos el control” (”We Lost Control”). In the music video he stars alongside his wife, Astrid Klisans. Baute is delighted to be a “calendar boy” and, although he isn’t obsessed with his looks, he never forgets his Salerm Cosmetics hairspray so he can do his quiff.

Carlos Baute has been married to the Venezuelan architect and model Astrid Klisans since 2011. They got married in Latvia, where his wife’s family comes from.

Baute lives a quiet life, which was only ruptured by a disagreement brought to light by Marta Sánchez concerning the rights to one of his hits, “Colgando en tus manos” (”Hanging from Your Hands”). This episode has now been left in the past and they are friends once again.

You are a successful singer and now you’re going to feature on a calendar. How do you feel about this new role?

People have always told me that I have great hair, and that I should do something to do with world of hair. Now it’s the right time. I was tremendously lucky because I have been using products from Salerm Cosmetics for many years, thanks to my wife who used them before me. The hairspray in particular, and now many other as well. So when I was asked to be the face of Salerm Cosmetics, I was delighted.

Baute, along with Colombians Juanes and Shakira, forms part of the triumvirate of the Latin American musicians who are currently most successful. He found success with the song “Colgando en tus manos” (”Hanging from Your Hands”) (2008), at which point he already had six titles in his discography and 20 years of being a singer under his belt. He began at age 13 with the kids’ band Los Chamos.

As well as singing and songwriting, Baute has also tried his hand at acting and television presenting. After debuting in the Venezuelan soap opera Destino de mujer (”Woman’s Destiny”) (1997), Baute was seen in Spanish series such as Ala… Dina, Aida and Mis adorables vecinos (”My Adorable Neighbours”), Argentine comedies such as Los únicos (”The Uniques”) and television programmes such as Operación Triunfo (”Operation Triumph) and A Bailar (”Let’s Dance”). It’s been a long and varied career, in which Baute is still set to wrtite many chapters.

company was Spanish and was so big, because these are products that I’ve seen in many salons in Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico... I’ve seen them all over.

How would you feel if you went to Miami, or to your home country, Venezuela, or to Colombia, and you went into a salon and saw your own picture on the calendar?

I hadn’t thought about that. A little bit shocked, to be honest.

It happens to me when I go to a bar or a club and they play one of my songs. Inside I think that I want the Earth to swallow me up because it makes me a bit embarrassed. But in any case, it will be lovely to share with the people who are there in that moment, and even better if it’s working with Salerm Cosmetics because it’s a family, a great team.

Let’s talk hair: what’s your daily haircare routine?

If I’m completely honest, it’s a bit of a disaster, because I live in hotels. I’m not the kind of person that carries around a bag full of products. With this kind of life, living out of a suitcase, coming and going, I try to make everything as practical as possible, which doesn’t leave me much time to look after myself. But when I’m at home I do, and much more now.

But you do care about your hair, right?

When it comes to styling I do. At the moment I love having a quiff, and I like to have it properly styled. My Salerm hairspray and my wax come with me everywhere.

Does your wife give you haircare tips?

You know what, I get my hair cut once a month, meaning I experiment quite a lot and I don't really mind if my hair gets frazzled or not, because in the end I’m going to end up getting it cut. Moreover, I’m already at an age at which my barbers tell me I won’t lose my hair...

Although the daily reality of Lorenzo Caprile is something else, far removed from the limelight. He prefers to define himself as a “tenacious tailor” rather than a stylist, a designer or a creator. In the workshop that he founded more than 20 years ago in Madrid’s Salamanca neighbourhood, everything is done by hand, making tailor-made and unique pieces.

There is a before and an after in Caprile’s life. Princess Cristina’s wedding in 1997 and the dress that the

fashion designer created for the occasion turned him into the biggest creator of wedding dresses in Spain and into one of the geniuses of haute couture. Today, his is one of the most important fashion houses.

Maximum coherence Caprile is synonymous with elegance.

It might be because of the Italian blood running through his veins. He studied fashion in New York and Florence, a city in which he got a degree in Language and Literature. It doesn’t

seem to be a coincidence that, in a happy conjunction of both worlds, Caprile is an expert in the language of fashion. Some of his creations remain alive in our retinas; from the eye-catching evening wear that the current Queen Letizia showed off to the spectacular red dress with crystal embroidery that Anne Igartiburu wore at the end of 2013, or that which Macarena Gómez wore at the last Goya Awards, also red.

And if you ask him what the best advice you can give a woman when she’s choosing what to wear, he is clear and direct: “don’t wear a disguise: be consistent with your style and personality”.

“I like to transform myself, that’s where my passion for acting comes from”

H

alle Berry continues to defy all the obstacles that she faces, both personally and professionally. In the middle of separating from French actor Olivier Martinez, the actress lives a very hectic life, promoting her latest work, the series Extant, which she co-produces with Steven Spielberg. The series explores the life of a sterile astronaut who, on returning from a space mission, realizes she is pregnant and wonders if the child is hers or the product of a scientific experiment. Halle Berry is one of the few Oscar-winning actresses who has decided to make the leap from cinema to television, a decision that is closely related to her family situation. “Filming the series gave me time to be with my kids, and additionally, lately I haven’t been offered anything that was worth leaving my kids at home for in order to go to work,” explains the actress one hot morning at the end of summer in Beverly Hills.

You act, produce, direct shorts, you're a mother of two and a business woman. What challenges are left for you?

In my personal life, bringing up and educating my children, a challenge but at the same time something that makes me happy. Professionally, Extant is a real challenge because I’m not only involved as an actress but also as a producer.

We imagine that it’s an added challenge having Steven Spielberg as your colleague...

Steven has been my idol since I saw E.T., one of my favourite films of all times, and one that I want my children to see. He was an innovator of his time, and he still is, so working with him has been a stroke of luck and a reason to be very excited.

Leaving cinema for television has been a big change. What attracted you to this medium?

The fact that the best scripts being written nowadays, especially for actresses in my circumstances, are for television. I feel very fulfilled. I have a great character, I’m working with great actors, good directors and excellent producers such as Spielberg. I am really happy, especially now that we’re starting the second season.

You were saying that now you have more time for your children. Does your eldest daughter know what her mother does for a living?

My daughter thinks I’m a princess because when she sees me dressed up all glamorous to go to a gala she comes up to me and says in my ear, “Mommy, you’re a princess, right?” and I say that I am (laughs). Nahla comes to filmings and she sees me working but she still doesn’t really know what being an actor means, she’s only seven.

I think that being a mother has given me the strength to fight, come hell or high water. I have two children who

As well as your passion for acting, you are interested in the world of cosmetics. What do you do to look after your skin?

I have changed my skincare routine, because as you age it’s important to give your skin what it needs. I’ve added products designed for mature skin, which give my skin vitality. The routine I follow at 40 is very different to that which I had when I was 20. I’ve realised that as you get older it’s best not to wear a lot of make-up because it makes you look older.

Do you remember when you started to use make-up?

Yes, I was 16. My mom didn’t like it that I was using make up but I loved experimenting with products and lip colours. I’ve always loved to transform myself, I guess that’s where my passion for acting comes from. That’s the age at which I started to enter beauty contests and for that it was important to learn how to use make-up.

We start by removing colour with Salerm Cosmetics’ Deco Eco bleach and with aloe vera oxidizing cream 20 V applied bit by bit to cover the whole hair and the tips in order to conduct a thorough cleaning, so as to obtain the cleanest base possible to work with. We leave it to work with no kind of protection or additional heat.

Transforming long hair into a mid-length do. The hair is divided into four sections: it is separated from ear to ear, marking a parting, and another central parting is made in the upper part of the head and to the base of the neck. In the fringe, we make a side parting, separating each side into two.

We start the cut diagonally, at the base of the neck. The fringe is cut in a slope, with scissors.

Each strip is cut diagonally, following the same direction as the cut by the neck. The rest of the hair is cut in a gradient, accenting the diagonal line.

I started out in cosmetics in 2004, in the same year that I arrived in the USA, and after finishing my studies at the Belle Beauty School.

How many of you are there?

My salon is made up of nine professionals, a great team composed of Roxana, Pablo and Yanay (stylists), Edys (barbershop specialist), Mónica

(assistant stylist), Esther (nail specialist), Mily (beautician), Alexis (receptionist and also my mother) and me, Samir (stylist and owner).

What services do you offer?

Thanks to my team’s training, we offer a wide range of services for hair, nails and skin. We are able to attend to any need, whether it’s colour or a fashionable cut.

What kind of clients come to your salon?

I would say that 50% of our clients are very daring and 50% are very conservative. It’s a pleasure working with both groups because they know what they want and that helps us improve.

he VMV Cosmetic Group Foundation launches a work that is the only one of its kind, the technical manual Visagism: Theory of Compensation/ Empowerment. This manual develops the most innovative methodologies in the field of beauty consulting. It is a book that provides the tools for personal image professionals to be trained in this subject, which is

essential in their work in the 21st century. The manual was personally prompted by Víctor Martínez Vicario, president of the VMV Cosmetic Group Foundation, and was developed thanks to the research and experience of its authors, Cruz Sánchez and Gonzalo Zarauza.

The technical manual Visagism: Theory of Compensation/ Empowerment provides new essential knowledge for the sector and offers universal knowledge.

This book features a charitable bent, as all the profits are destined to help those lacking in resources who want to study hairdressing or beauty, through scholarships and educational materials from the VMV Cosmetic Group Foundation. In fact, this

foundation has already donated more than 500,000 euros in the past few years to give scholarships to hairdressing studies and to young Spaniards who, due to a lack of resources, couldn't meet the monthly payments at a hairdressing academy.

The contents of the book are structured in blocks and appendices, all contextualized in visual language, as the images and texts demonstrate innovative information on the subject in a complementary way.

he vinyl is here to stay.

That’s what the experts predict. We all make mistakes: we chucked out our vinyls or confined them to a box in the deepest, darkest basement. In the 90s, when CDS made their appearance we let ourselves be dazzled by their iridescent shine and not long ago we succumbed to digital format. Now we’ve awoken from the dream and realized that our music has become something intangible. This need that humans have for property, for the palpable, for physical contact can only be satisfied by vinyl, which holds in its grooves pure, high quality sounds, and according to many audiophiles, the best musical experience.

HIPSTER: BEARD AND VINYL A trend that is contributing to the sales of vinyl music is the hipster subculture, which sets its sights on the 1940s, when jazz was the big thing, and they opt for fleeing convention, demonstrating a true passion for independent music in vinyl form. Moreover, being young and carrying a record under your arm is seen as a show of authenticity, though

we’ll have to see how fair this loyalty goes, as the vinyl is less practical.

Columbia and Emi didn’t want to miss out on this opportunity.

THE GOOSE THAT LAYS THE GOLDEN EGGS In 2014 the vinyl market in the USA grew 32%, and 101% in the UK, where production is still over 1 million discs a year, and 3.5% in Spain, although it seems that the figures from the IFPI (an association that represents the interests of 1,300 music companies) are not completely accurate, because in Spain the sector is part of the indie scene and many records are sold at concerts and online. The Japanese passion for high fidelity and the hipster boom in Japan means that their figures are like those in Britain.

In the UK, vinyl now makes some £20 million a year, compared to just £3 million in 2010. The biggest vinyl producer in Europe, the Czech company GZ Media, has had no other option than to renovate its machinery from the 1980s to produce more than 12 million copies in 2014. The queen bee in the American market is United Record Pressing, which makes 40,000 copies a day.

WHAT’S PRODUCED? Everything: classics and contemporary. Solo artists, rock groups and pop see vinyl as their star product. It doesn’t matter to them that you download their music for free on iTunes because they offer a disc that they themselves have a lot of affection for. U2, The Vaccines, The Wombats, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Mark Knopfler, Lady Gaga, Bunbury, Daft Punk, Amy Winehouse, Oasis, REM, Nick Cave, Neil Young, Manic Street Preachers, Sex Pistols, David Bowie and The Doors have all been successful on the turntable... And there are real phenomena such as Lazaretto by Jack White with 75,000 copies in the USA in 2014, which became the biggest selling vinyl of the past 20 years.
