The Story Line Reuse of suspended railwayThe Old Mountain Line 2010 Thesis Project Individual Advisorďźš Ih-Cheng Lai LocationďźšMiaoli & Taichung, Taiwan This design was originated from my journeys. Before I started this project, I had traveled around Taiwan to observe this small country with diversified cultures from a tourist's viewpoint. In the journey, I only used my feet and trains, and found great potential of traveling Taiwan with trains. The train is not considered as a fast way to travel around. Having been completely developed early, trains are not only vehicles, but important means to improve industries and economic developments. In my journey, I found a long-suspended rail line, nicknamed "Old Mountain Line," in central mountain areas of western Taiwan. The line was a branch line for industries in the past, so it had abundant natural and historical resources along the line. I hoped that a new "railway traveling project" can be designed to better integrate local unique scenery with existing rail roads and historical sites.

Thesis Statement Re-appear the trace of local landscape and industry feature

A freight transportation station

The transformation is light view tourist spot now.

It was also an industrys assembled location, such as woods , teas, camphor industrys in 1903. Particularly do the passenger transportation from 1983.

The New Mountain line establishes in 1998, and Old Mountain line suspended forever consequently . Now ,The old mountain line becomes a hot spot. And parts of the old railrways have already changed into cycling routes.

The Old Mountain Line Railway is seen as a potential World Heritage List site for Taiwan. Steep slopes and many curved sections are the line’s special characteristics. It grows about 15.6km. Why are there 4 stations, 4 bridges and 9 tunnels? Because of the complicated geography. So make use of the region four kinds of geography start analyzing the lines. 1. Study the four each area geography environments programme future the new stops and itinerarys. 2.Study the existing activities of the region, and analyze a circulation of person, bicycle and train.Find out the position of main activity for people. In conclusion,Put forth the humanities and natural environment special feature of the region. And the main design will are Runis of Longteng and Shengxing train station these two whole history culture enrich of region.

Train Analysis How special is this railway in Old Mountain Line? There are more big curves. When trains crossing, the train reduces the speed. -This train must be controled the [speed] very easily. Here are almost single tracks and narrow gauge railrways. -Have to notice the [width size] of train.(Width of narrow gauge is 1,067mm). There are more small tunnels -Have to notice the [height size] of train.

In Shengxing Station, I was surrounded by mountains and thick fog. I felt that I was about to be devoured.

I was walking on a high iron bridge and looking historical wounds. I was standing there, firmly.

I went closer to a collapsed bridge, touching vines which covered the bridge. It felt like wrinkles of the history.

module Environment and Histroy Center for the University of California at Santa Barbara 2008 Thesis Project Individual AdvisorďźšWei-Xiang Song LocationďźšSanta Barbara, California This was a practice from an international design reviews among students. In front of this base was a historical site of the school: Campbells Barn with a natural pool (Spring Pool) surrounding it. The aim of this design was to introduce the special historical and ecological environment to visitors and students. It could be seen as a classroom with educational functions. With designs of green energy technologies, I expected it to better respond its surrounding natural environments. In my main concept, I combined every space with a modular plan. Using modules as units was easier for me to transport and make building materials to make it economical. I also researched much on microclimates of the base to assess appropriate locations and materials of facades and other spaces. For example, it had northeast wind at the base, and the positions of windows were adjusted according to it.

10

The Sites and Environment

Concept Strategy

The base was located in the wast shore of California. In summer, the high temperature would be lower down with moisture of the sea. The climate was warm and gentle because of this effect of the sea controlling the temperature.

Due to sufficient air and light at the base, unnecessary waste of resources could be decreased with such advantages. I used a quantification method with horizontal and vertical stacks to lead sunlight and wind into the space.

Two important cultural sites of the base were around the university: one of them was Campbells Barn, which would be used in the future as an exhibiting space. The other was a natural site: Spring Pool, or known as Temporary Pool. It would frozen in winter and the ice would be melted in spring. It was a swamp and a protected area for amphibians and insects.

Program Strategy

How to reduce ``the air condition utilization rate’’? This is also the concept of economy energy that use less air condition. This can reduce ``Urban Heat Island Effect ‘’. So I study the program how demand on the room size, sunlight, wind andsound control. Than depanding on the program demands also match with the microclimate in the site.

Cortex Exclusive Pavilion of a designer 2009 Academic Work Individual Advisor: Chen-Cheng Chen Studio:[Digital Design Studio] Location:Yuanshan Fine Arts Park, Taipei, Taiwan In this project, I tried to reverse common procedures, and started from concepts and bases instead of designs. I began with an experimental method, starting with a flat surface with changed shapes, and developing every step from it. I kept the part of finding a proper concept to be used in the project to the last procedure. In the end, a pavilion was designed. The processes of the project were to figure out the possibility of "textiles" in architectural designs via digital designing. In this designing practice, I set a British lighting and furniture designer as my goal of my future exhibitions of interior designing. I researched his works and turned them into the foundation of exhibiting spaces. In doing so, I expected myself to better analyze the concept of textiles architectures.

Pavillion Design

STEP 08-Pavilion Design First, I must integrate previous steps, then find out the work of designing the viewpoint and concept similar designer, among them, I think a furniture designer-Tom Raffield, know how to handle the structure system of radian and helical form shape. The concept such as my previous unit concept.

Tom Raffield who is the wooden lighting and furniture designer in UK. He has created a furniturand lighting range by steam bending a variety of woods.

Works analyzed

The structure system of radian unit and helical form.

The main material is a wood . The structure is integrally formed. The wood joint and structural support also very special. Consequently analysis structure, and try to imagine to convert into the space of idea.

Find that the shape of helical type is his most use unit in the work, also with before study the unit in with"Poll up" and "Extrud" step likeness, then take this as the concept to develop, and be divided into the design"framework" and"epidermis" development.

STEP 09-Design Strategy Program Strategy For the used space, the helical type space concept isn't reasonable. Hence convert helical frame into more simple circle type and make the modular program. At the same time, study the dimensions that the person use the space. Take circle of 45 cm diameter as most the minimum size, it’s also a height of general chair. The purpose is for starting developing the space by more close person's dimensions.
