I absolutely love a smiling face, enthusiastic demeanor, and amazing service. Rover Rescue Coping with Barrier Reactivity

Barrier reactivity can be intimidating, whether you are a dog or a human. Have you ever walked past a fence and been rushed by a huge dog barking its head off? It can be quite unnerving. A strange dog with an unknown agenda is scary. Some dogs are trained to react to strangers who come to their yard, some act out of fear, some are frustrated. Constant barking at a fence, door, or the end of a leash can be very stressful for a dog, but there are ways to improve it.

It can be a traumatic for a dog to constantly be yearning for something just out of reach. No matter the barrier, it is holding a dog back from getting something it really wants. Frustration often manifests in barking, growling, lunging, whining, and jumping. The object of a dog’s affection is extremely important, yet no matter what it does it cannot reach it.

Different environments require different solutions. If a dog is in a fenced in area, it may help to build a visual barrier where your dog cannot see what is on the other side of the fence. While it can still hear and smell, it makes it a bit easier to focus on what is in the yard around it. If on leash, having a stock of high value treats on board can help distract a dog from the bicycle, car, jogger, cat, or whatever the source of its anxiety is. The key is keeping a safe distance and catching a dog before it starts reacting to prevent and avoid the behavior entirely. If your treats are not interesting enough over the stimulus, you may need higher value treats like meat or cheese or need to increase your distance from the trigger.

Dogs that constantly bark from neighbors or dogs walking near its home could benefit from visual barriers in the form of curtains and a closed door. If the doorbell is a specific and dog owner. trigger, one can practice giving treats or other adequate distraction before the bell rings and before the dog can react.

It might be helpful to keep a dog in a closed back room with some music and a good bone to chew on if you know there are going to be many visitors coming to the door.

Barrier reactivity is stressful for a dog and its owner and can stress out humans and canines passing by. Counter conditioning, such as giving high value treats at a high rate while the trigger passes so a dog does not have time to react, is the best go to for modifying this behavior. Over time, instead of looking for the bicycle, the dog will look to you for the chicken. Visual barriers or increasing distance to start can help keep a dog’s focus. Barrier reactivity can be improved, and you and your dog can lower cortisol levels!

Back to Earth Improve Your Circadian Rhythm

Circadian rhythms “our 24-hour biological cycles” govern more than our waking and sleeping. These rhythms affect when we are born, when we die, and how we pass the days in between.

The body’s rhythms are controlled by a “master clock” located in a tiny region of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus.

The circadian rhythm is set by external cues of light and darkness. Light increases wakefulness hormones, like cortisol, and darkness is necessary for production of sleep hormones, like melatonin. Sleep has become on over-the-top wellness trend.

Products including smartwatches and Oura rings to track our sleep quality, smart mattresses, sleep tonics, CBD, and even sleep ice cream. A $432 billion sleep market and we’re still not sleeping!

The reason that most of these generic sleep solutions aren’t working is because our modern lives defy the basic facts of circadian biology. Humans evolved to be highly sensitive to the 24-hour solar cycle and super-regular exposure to natural light and dark. We need the sun’s bright blue light in the day to be alert and active, and we need dark to kick-start our brains sleep mode and recovery. Humans today have been exposed to so much disruption to their circadian rhythms, such as the huge disconnect between natural solar time and our social clocks. We’re taking in light and dark in historically unnatural ways. Netflix binging, checking social media until we fall asleep trick our brains into thinking it’s still daytime.

Dr. Steve Lockley, associate professor of medicine at Harvard says “the absolute key to healthy sleep and circadian rhythms is stable, regularly-timed daily light and dark exposure – our natural daily time cues. Sleep negates light input to the brain and so keeping a regular sleep pattern will also help maintain regular light-dark exposure. After dusk, when natural light disappears, we must minimize the negative impact of man-made light. In the day, we have evolved to be in the light, ideally sunlight, but if not, high quality blue enriched indoor light.

Given that most of our body systems express circadian rhythms, ensuring proper alignment of our internal circadian clocks, starting with the management of lighting, will have major impacts on human health.” Experts predict a major shift in wellness with less focus on all the generic sleep solutions and a keen new focus on circadian health optimization for not only sleep but

for all the brain and body systems that are controlled by the circadian clock.

2. Get Some Sun

Vitamin D straight from the sun is vitally important for mental and physical health.

Going outside for as little as 15 minutes every morning can help you wake up and feel refreshed.

3. Exercise Daily

Raising your core body temperature and doing cardio can help you sleep better at night.

4. No Wi-Fi

Before you go to bed make sure to turn the Wi-Fi off.

Being away from your smartphone reduces distractions and stress. The light from the screen will throw off your circadian rhythm and keep you awake.

5. Set a Bedtime

Establishing a bedtime will change your circadian rhythm, always go to bed at the same time every night to get yourself used to sleep at the right time.

Well, we have so much more going on this week than we did last week. How are you doing with all of it? We are struggling to re-open our society all the while navigating a huge uprising and movement for equal treatment for our black brothers and sisters.

Although protests in our backyard have been minimal, one can’t help but see what’s going on in many cities across the country.

Reactions to the demonstrations vary widely. But I have a question for you to ponder regardless of the feelings you have been experiencing. What would it be like to get curious about racism and racial bias?

Why am I telling you this in a Healthy Morsel message? Because it’s all part of our self-care and our care for humanity. If we are willing to explore our own beliefs and if we get curious about the pain behind the current protests we can go really far in healing this nation from the trauma of racism. We are responsible only for ourselves around this. You don’t have to change anyone else or anything you do in the outside world. This work need only go on inside and, when it does, I guarantee that will make a difference in this world.

Clearly, we don’t have much diversity around here. Except for summer visitors, we don’t really get any kind of education on what many in other cities face. But here’s something to know: regardless of where we live, we are all raised with some basic assumptions, some of them influenced by the umbrella of racial bias. All of us. Before you get angry with me for saying this, ask yourself a few questions. 1. Why do you live where you do?

2. Do you know any areas where there is diversity? 3. What do you think of those neighborhoods? Chances are, like me, when you think of areas with a strong minority presence you don’t have the same thoughts as you do when you think of ‘your’ neighborhood. Those beliefs have been imposed on us by society, a society that operates with unsuspected and sometimes overt racial bias and racism.

So, if you find some curiosity, the next step is learning about yourself, your beliefs, and the beliefs of the African American population in particular. There are great books out there to help us learn more. Some places to start include Bryan Stevenson’s book, Just Mercy; Ijeoma Oluo’s book, So You Want to Talk About Race; White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo; the workbook, Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad; How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi; and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

I know some of these titles will spark defensiveness and I urge you to know this is not at all about shame or blame. Not One Bit. It’s really, really hard to look deeply at one’s own biases. It takes a lot of courage, too. Right now, I can’t think of a better way to help humanity, including ourselves. Until next time, eat healthy, be happy and wash your hands!

The Irish Riviera

Spring Lake, known as the “Irish Riviera”, is a quiet seaside town steeped in luxury and old world charm. Nestled between Belmar and Sea Girt, the history runs deep, dating back to its formation in 1892. Go back in time even further to 1876 and you’ll find the birth of the Hewitt Wellington Hotel. This hotel that you have likely driven or biked past sits right on the lake next to the exquisite St Catherine’s Church. What you may not know about this historical building is that in 1988, the hotel became a condominium hotel, aka “con-tel”.

The 29 units contained in the building including the two rooms above the carriage house are in fact owned by individuals. Y ou may be asking, “what’s a cond-tel?” right about now.

As individual owners, you have the option to join the hotel’s rental program. They will rent your room to guests while the room isn’t in use, taking care of everything from advertising to booking guests to cleaning it. What a great way to be a snow bird and generate income while you are down in Florida or working during the week in the city.

At this point, you may be wondering what it costs to stay a night or a week. According to hotel manager, Billy Johnson, “During the summer prices range from the $250-$450 depending on the type of room and weekday vs. weekend. During the winter months, October through March, prices range from $125- $200 depending on the type of room and weekday vs. weekend. We do host several wedding parties throughout the year. Wedding season seems to be the strongest in March, April, September, and October. We have wedding parties that will rent out the entire hotel for a weekend.”

At the time of publishing, three units are available for sale ranging from $239,999 for a studio to $385,000 for a suite. It doesn’t get much easier than this. The hotel’s HOA fees cover all of your utilities and they even clean the room for you. As the staff like to say, “May all who come as guests, leave as friends.

Each room looks just like you would expect a hotel room to look like, with a bathroom, bedroom, and a mini refrigerator to keep your iced tea and Prosecco cold. The styles of the rooms, however, range from nostalgic to modern coastal because the individual owners decorate to their taste.
