Rover Rescue The Importance of PR for Animal Shelters

Public relations in animal rescue is vital to an organization’s success. It may be a low priority on the totem pole but building a relationship with the community brings in more adopters, volunteers, and donors. Animal rescues and shelters need to build a strong rapport with their community to create change and achieve goals.

In the past, shelters have used tactics such as photos and videos of sad, starving, abused, or mangled animals in attempt to gather support and donations. Animal rescue tugs at people’s heartstrings, and understandably, the public would quickly turn the page of the magazine or change the television channel upon seeing these images.

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

Supporters, volunteers, and donors do not need to see the dark and awful places some rescued animals come from. They would prefer to view images of happy, healthy animals, such as adopted animals thriving in homes or medical and behavioral rehabilitation success stories. We all want to make a difference, and seeing hard evidence of this encourages further support. Tangible proof that money or time is helping animals blossom helps individuals decide where to allocate their valuable resources.

While small municipal shelters or rescues may not have the ability to employee a public relations individual or team, everyone in an organization can be aware of how they communicate with the public and share positive messages. No one likes to be told that they are wrong, making the line between rude and appropriate education very fine. Providing resources for low cost spay and neuter and vaccines are helpful tools to assist with pet health and overpopulation.

Day to day interactions with shelter staff is vital, such as no-judgement animal surrenders and open adoptions. Everyone has unpredictable life events, and sometimes breaking that lifelong commitment to an animal is unavoidable. Judging and shaming someone who may already feel bad will give them a more negative view of the shelter or rescue, and less likely to return or utilize resources down the road.

Having an extremely long adoption survey or rigorous adoption requirements only deters adopters. If someone wants a dog, they are going to get a dog. If they come to a shelter, the staff may be the important variable in whether they adopt or buy from a pet store or breeder. Not everyone has the same views on pets, and there are other options of good homes rather than one set, strict standard.

Steering an adopter towards a more appropriate dog for their lifestyle or making gentle recommendations for a certain dog’s needs can save lives. Just because a home may be different does not mean it is bad.

Prioritizing PR no matter how large a nonprofit is makes a difference in attracting and maintaining donors and volunteers. Being more aware and careful with public interaction encourages people to come back.

Advertising with positive, impactful content helps share the great, hard work an animal rescue is doing.

Keeping an open mind and being kind helps save lives.

The Power of Positive Thinking Lowering the Volume on Anxiety

Our attention is always engaged by something, something that we need to deal with. Anxiety can be the result of the unknown. We can become fearful of what we do notknow or what will happen. The many variables of the outcome of our future can leave our minds reeling with what-if’s. Real ease may not be born in some of us naturally. Patience and ease may be equated to self-control when it comes to managing our anxiety levels but some days, we have it under control and other days not so much. This pandemic has me seeing so many clients, daily struggling to keep their anxiety under control.

Here are some helpful tips that I give to my clients during moments of high-volume anxiety.

1. It all starts with being in your body. The physical aspect of anxiety can leave some with heart palpitations or a quick breath. Always return to your breath.

Physically be in your body. Think about the whole mind, body and spirit.

Make time to be still. Feel into each emotion and sense you are experiencing.

This will bring you back to your body. a. Acknowledge FIVE things you see around you. It could be a cup, a spot on the wall, anything in your surroundings. b. 4: Acknowledge FOUR things you can touch around you. c. 3: Acknowledge THREE things you hear.

d. 2: Acknowledge TWO things you can smell. e. 1: Acknowledge ONE thing you can taste.

2. I’ve talked about breath work in so many previous articles. Go back to your breath. You control your breath. The Take-5 breath exercise is so effective for me. Take a deep breath in for a count of five, hold your breath for a count of five, then release your breath for a count of five.

3. Be one with nature! Get outside and get moving. Being outside in nature can help to ground you to the energy of the Earth. Exercising while connecting to nature is a win-win.

4. Understand your triggers of what may be causing your anxiety so you can eliminate or minimize those situations. The same goes for those limiting beliefs.

The negative chatter in your head can cause negative emotions allowing that run-away train to take flight. Irrational beliefs and self-sabotaging statements no longer serve you so kick them to the curb.

5. Limit screen time. Remove yourself from too much social media that may be causing some angst. Negative posts, insensitive comments, or seeing people in certain situations that may upset you can be an overload of emotions.

It’s important to practice a daily routine of relaxation for your own sake. It’s a no brainer that too much anxiety can cause the body to physically manifest health related issues.

There are herbs, holistic remedies, and other supplements that can be utilized to lower anxiety, but the best start is your own self practice first. If all else fails, let me know, I’m always here to help.

Back to Earth Canning & How it Changed the Pantry

In the long history of food preservation canning is a relatively recent development. Humans have salted, dried, and fermented foods since before recorded history. It wasn’t until the late 18th century when preserving food by hear-treated and sealing in airtight containers came into practice.

Cans were handmade and took up to six hours to cook, this meant canned food was too expensive for ordinary people and the can opener wasn’t invented for another 40 years. Today there are concerns over salt content and toxins when it comes to canned food but it is entirely safe. In 1974 food samples were taken from cans found on a 100 year old sunken steamboat and found completely safe to eat. The availability of canned food played a crucial role in 19th century feeding the enormous armies of the Crimean War, the U.S. Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War, as well as offering explores and colonists a taste of home in unfamiliar lands. Following the global depression of 1873, U.S. exports of canned foods boomed, led by the Campbell, Heinz, and Borden companies. In 1904, the Max Ams Machine Company of New York patented the double-seam process used in most modern food cans. Today a double-seam machine can safely seal more than 2,000 cans in one minute, a long way from Appert’s pea-packed wine bottles.

Conventional canning as we know it today began with Nicolas Appert, the original food in jars guy. A Parisian confectioner and chef, Nicolas began experimenting with preserved foods, such as soups, juices, vegetables, and even dairy. Appert believed it was the presence of air that led to spoilage. In the early 1700s, cooked meats were preserved over short periods of time by covering them with a layer of fat. But it was Napolean and the French government that really changed everything. In hopes of finding a more effective way to feed his troops, a prize of 12,000 francs was offered to anyone who could devise such a means.

Nicolas continued with his experiments and discovered that it was heat not air that kept spoilage away. The official scientific discovery of microbes in relation to food spoilage came 50 years later. Appert’s process involved placing food inside glass jars that were then cooked, much like wine, and sealed off with a wax seal.

The jars were wrapped in canvas and then boiled. He submitted his invention to the French government and was announced the winner in January of 1810. That same year Nicolas published

What can we say about the summer of 2020? That it was bizarre or surreal? It’s certainly been a bit different for many of us. There are some who made the most of the summer but plenty of us felt the pinch of COVID regulations. Now it’s looking like the fall will continue to be different from the expected “back to school” routines. How are you handling it all?

Railing over decisions being made or even not made that effect us is almost pointless. Why not spend your energy on areas where you can make a difference?

Kindness seems a bit short in supply and that is not surprising. I feel for the parents trying to make decisions about school especially when information changes daily. I feel for the front line workers and people who have to go to work and put themselves in harms way. I feel for the people whose work has decreased or disappeared. I could go on and on about the many ways people are being effected right now. It’s a very tough time!

This can leave us feeling not our best selves.

So please, take care of your self!! Everyone will benefit. Self-care is not a selfish act.

So what might those areas be? Well, self-care is of utmost importance right now. Physical self-care and emotional self-care will help increase your resilience to the stressful things in life and to the physical things (think exposure to COVID or colds and flu). If we do not take care of ourselves we will not have the energy to face what confronts us.

Resentment will grow and your patience will grow short. You don’t want to be the customer in the grocery store screaming at the hapless clerk (I have witnessed that during this time and it left a lot of
