Rover Rescue Tips for House Training Your Pup

House training a dog does not need to be a daunting task. In a perfect world, dogs would transition into homes with zero accidents. In reality, many of them do not have home experience and just do not know what to do right away. The older a dog is, the longer that it can hold its bladder, but as humans we still need to do our part to get the ball rolling.

The best thing dog owners can do for house training is to get their dog accustomed to a set schedule. This means eating at around the same time every day and getting out for potty breaks every few hours. First thing in the morning, after breakfast, in the afternoon, after dinner, and before bed are usually good goals to aim for, though of course it does not hurt to let a dog out more often in the beginning. If a dog is at young puppy age, they can only hold their bladder for a few hours and need to go out accordingly. It is best not to wait more than two or three hours when trying to house train a puppy. Aim to ask for assistance when planning on being gone for more than a few hours.

When away or unable to supervise, it is wise to contain a dog to a crate or small, easy to clean space such as a bathroom or laundry room. You can also utilize baby gates to block off areas. Dogs typically try not to use the bathroom where they sleep, so if the crate is not too large it can be a valuable tool in house training.

If getting a puppy, they do make crates with dividers that can “grow� with the dog. The key is to prevent the accident before it happens, as scolding a dog later is ineffective.

If a dog does start to go to the bathroom in the house while humans are present, the dog should be brought outside to its designated potty area. Yelling or punishing a dog may make it afraid to go to the bathroom in front of humans, which could further complicate the training process.

Try to clean up the area as much as possible using odor eliminators so the dog does not think that it can go to the bathroom there again. If there is a spot that cannot seem to be properly cleaned, it may be helpful to block it off or cover it. Neutering male dogs does decrease their tendency to mark.

If house training seems to be taking an extended amount of time or a dog is going to the bathroom inappropriately, there may be a medical condition that needs to be addressed. This is also true in-house trained dogs that start leaking or having accidents. Supervision and getting on a tight schedule are the most important factors in setting you and your dog up for success when house training.

As if we weren’t brimming with change in 2020, we are now upon the age of Aquarius. What is the Age of Aquarius even mean? “The Age of Aquarius, in astrology, is either the current or forthcoming astrological age, depending on the method of calculation. Astrologers maintain that an astrological age is a product of the earth’s slow axial precession rotation and lasts for 2,160 years, on average (one Great Year equals 25,920-year period of precession / 12 zodiac signs = 2,160 years). There are various methods of calculating the boundaries of an astrological age. In sun-sign astrology, the first sign is Aries, followed

by Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces, whereupon the cycle returns to Aries and through the zodiacal signs again. Astrological ages proceed in the opposite direction (“retrograde” in astronomy). Therefore, the Age of Aquarius follows the Age of Pisces.” — wikipedia

The winter solstice in December of 2020 moved us into the age of Aquarius but are we really in the age of Aquarius? Some Astrologers go back and forth with whether or not we actually moved into it or have been in it for some time. What I can confirm is that this shift will leave the element of earth and move into the element of air. There is also debate as to whether or not we are leaving the age of Pisces, the fish, the symbol of Christ and moving into more humanitarian work and more technology. I don’t believe we are leaving the word of Christ behind but rather are moving into a more technological advancement as a species. What has been agreed upon was the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter during the winter solstice back in December 2020 with seven celestial bodies moving into the sign of Aquarius this February 2021.

As I write this I am watching what is happening at the Capitol on January 6th. I worry that there is more chaos to come. I am without words at what I’ve seen going on in our country. I don’t know about you but between the pandemic and politics I am feeling quite beaten up. What do we, the citizens of this country, do about the divisions we are witnessing and experiencing? It can feel quite overwhelming and I admit I am struggling to not let that overwhelm take me over. There is so much wrong with what is going on, so much.

And honestly, unless you have some type of superpower there is not much each of us can do to change any of the hate and division going on.

Or yet, is there something we can do? Turns out that yes! There are things we can do. We can be kind to people. We can hold each other in mutual regard and respect. We can listen and hear others.

We can set compassionate but firm limits on what we will allow ourselves to take part in (think conversations you have where hate is being spewed-we can stop those conversations and challenge the hate.) We can be examples of respect and kindness. We can be courageous and challenge the lies. We can choose to reach out with a soft heart and a firm spine. We can take care of ourselves and hold compassion for the fact that this is really hard. We can become a better angel.

People are allowed to hold differing opinions.

That is part of what has made America so great.

But somehow, these differing opinions now mean you are either ok or you are the enemy. We cannot allow the difference of opinion to mean someone is an enemy. When conversation prevails, respectful conversation, we can usually find a common ground to stand on. We need to find that common ground. People who find common ground can find a way to negotiate their differences in a peaceful manner. Right now our government is not being a good example of that. We can do better. We must do better. Find a way to speak for how you really feel. Behind hate is usually fear and pain.
