Rt. 34 Landscape Supply Yard — These Guys Rock! By Ashleigh Young

Customers meeting owner and family patriarch Mike Baldasare, son Brian, or staff members Bill Buttler, Kip Peters and Brendin Rafferty for the first time can immediately tell that RT34 is no ordinary landscape supply yard. This team is full of heart, jokes, and creativity, making you feel like family the moment you step into their office, affectionately dubbed “the nostalgia shed”.

Just off Route 34 in Wall, a stone’s throw south of the Bel-Aire Golf Course and nestled behind mountainous piles of mulch, sand, and decorative stones, sits a small shed that you might overlook at first. But as peals of gravelly laughter ring out from the inside, you know you’ve reached RT34 Landscape Supply Yard. Founded in 1987 by current owner Mike Baldasare’s late brother Stephen, RT34 Landscape Supply has been in the Baldasare family for 30 years and, having now added a second location on Route 9 in Howell, the business shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Mike definitely sets the tone, saying, “We cater to a lot of homeowners who may be doing a landscaping project for the first time and not know quite what they need. So we always aim to make their experience here unintimidating and educational to make sure they leave with the right products for the job … and we like to have a little fun along the way.”

As outdoor living trends have evolved from wooden decks to dry concrete and now to seamless indoor/ outdoor living spaces fashioned after homeowners’ favorite travel destinations, so have RT34’s products and services. Designed to cater to the needs of both individuals and the trade, RT34 stocks many different decorative stone, edging, gravel and exclusive paver brand options including Techo-Bloc and Belgard Hardscape Products. While they don’t stock greenery, they do offer a wide variety of mulches and topsoils to protect homeowners’ lawns and plants. Mulches offer a multitude of benefits: helping gardens thrive, adding nutrients to the soil, controlling weeds and pests and saving water, as well as providing a perfect decorative finishing touch to landscaping. Topsoil products are especially relevant to our area given the amount of houses that have grass lawns all the way to the ocean that require some extra protection.

This sense of fun also comes through in their marketing approach. “Brian comes to me with crazy ideas at least 3 times a day” says, Mike. “Yeah, but we end of doing most of them”, ribs Brian. Some of their most popular ideas have included warm weather patio and pizza parties, Mulch Madness and Cinco de Mulcho promotions, and tee shirts that read “RT34 Landscape Supply Yard - Dropping Loads All Over the Jersey Shore”. Speaking of which, we should mention that they do offer home delivery to most southern Monmouth and Northern Ocean county locations. RT34 Landscape Supply Yard is located at 2800 Ridgewood Road on the corner of Route 34 in Wall, behind the Kempton Flag/Shed complex. Open Mon-Fri 7am-5pm, Sat 7am-12:30pm

Students of 08742 Spring has Sprung! By Elizabeth Black

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, many people consider April to be the first true month of Spring. Here in 08742, many students associate it with the beginning of the fourth marking period and spring break. Among all of the things April has to offer, possibly one of the most underappreciated holidays is

Earth Day. No matter what you choose to believe about how it came together, there is only one Earth.

Earth is the third planet from the sun and the only planet in our solar system that was not named after a Greek or Roman God/Goddess. Today, Earth has a vast array of organisms living on it and a wild landscape. Earth’s surface is seventy percent water. Its highest point is Mount Everest and its lowest is a spot in the Mariana Trench called Challenger Deep. It is estimated that Earth is home to anywhere from seven to nine million species. From Antarctica to Death Valley, Earth hosts some of the most ridiculous environments known to man. And yet, pollution of our beautiful planet continues to be a rising issue. According to DoSomething.org, pollution is one of the biggest global killers and it affects over one-hundred million people. In this month, take the time to think about your planet. Even simple things like turning off the water while you brush your teeth, turning lights off when you leave the room, and recycling your plastic make a difference. Little steps add up to big steps. In addition. the Point Pleasant Borough Environmental Commission is once again organizing the Earth Day festival at Riverfront Park. The date is set for Saturday, April 22nd from noon to four o’clock, with a rain date of April 23rd. Music, rides, food, petting zoos, educational displays, as well as green products and ideas are all advertised on the festival poster. There is no charge for admission and all are welcome to attend.

Point Pleasant Boro High School.

Most (if not all) students of 08742 are looking forward to spring break. For as long as history has been recorded, people have celebrated the arrival of spring. However, spring break as we know it has more recent roots. Vulgar details spared, the tradition of spring break began in the 1930’s and was established fully in the 1960’s. Now, spring break is celebrated nationwide. For older students, spring break is travel time. Popular destinations include Florida, Mexico, and Las Vegas. Younger high school students may not travel as far without family in tow, but the downtime is appreciated nonetheless. Students are entering the final quarter of the year, meaning we’re only a few short months away from summer vacation. If your countdown does not seem to be decreasing fast enough, remember this: patience is a virtue, 08742.

Parental Guidance The Great Outdoors By Maureen Whelan

While some people may believe the only way to increase academic success is with more academic practice, there is new research that contradicts this belief. Not only has research concluded that increased learning time has little to no positive effect on academic performance (Institute of Educational Sciences, Us Dept of Education, July, 2014), additional research supports that increased physical activity and unstructured outdoor playtime improves academic and non-academic factors including improved attention, improved creativity and problem-solving, decreased fidgeting, and decreased peer conflicts(CDC, July 2010). This is something that developmental specialists, occupational and physical therapists have been saying for years, but it is nice to see there is finally some mainstream research to support our belief. Business Insider published an article citing that outdoor time benefits adults as well. These include factors such as improved short term memory, restored mental energy, stress relief, reduced inflammation, better vision, improved concentration and sharper thinking and creativity, immune system boost, improved mental health and possible cancer risk reduction. Companies understand that employees that possess these healthy work traits are essential for success. And corporate design is responding by working with businesses to expand outdoor areas, and increase natural light to benefit a greater number of employees, not just those with the corner office. Sitting for long periods of time under artificial light is unnatural for both kids and adults. So if you want to help your child succeed, get outside with them and chances are they will stay outside longer, and you’ll both be happier. Here are some tips for successful outdoor time: 1. Keep some old clothes, and ratty sneakers on hand for rainy days or walks in the woods. This makes it less stressful for both you and your child. 2. Collect basic tools of a pencil and small notebook, magnifying glass, large flat tweezers, twine, small scissors, a clear jar with a lid, a large spoon/ small garden spade and a shoebox or tote. These exploration tools will allow your child to fully explore bugs, rocks, leaves, and collect a few treasures. 3. Designate a small area of the yard to be unmanicured “kids play”. Place a few pavers or rocks, garden tools and allow your child to hang their own bird houses, feeders, painted rocks, or fairy houses.

Earth and sky,

woods and fields, lakes and rivers,

the mountain and

the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and

teach some of us more than we can ever

learn from books. ~ John Lubbock

4. Create a “scavenger hunt” list, or preprint one from online resources 5. Visit parks and outdoor areas with other parents and kids. Monmouth and Ocean County both have an incredible park system with a variety of free or inexpensive activities. Make a passport with a plan to visit all of them. 6. Refrain from telling your child too much. Allow him to touch, listen, small and watch the world around them. 7. Cultivate an interest, such as bugs, birds, fish, worm farms, miniature plants or gardening. If your child has a hard time leaving the device explore geo-caching as an option. 8. Praise exploration of nature and your child’s surroundings. A child who is connected to nature will be secure. Remember cognition is best when a child is relaxed. Maureen Whelan is a pediatric Occupational Therapist and mother of 4 children ages 16,14, 12 and 8.

How a Chiropractor Treats Your Sciatica By Tony Garrow, D.C.

Sciatic is one of the most common nerve disorders affecting people today, and the symptoms can be anything from frustrating to downright debilitating. Plainly speaking, the root cause of sciatica is an imbalance in the lower lumbar region of your spine. This leads to your sciatic nerve being pinched or pressured unnaturally.

Dr. Tony Garrow & Dr. Susan Nemiroff

The pain of sciatica is, of course, rarely limited to the lower back. This is because the sciatic nerve is a very prominent nerve running from the lower back all the way down to the feet on both sides. That’s why people who suffer sciatica often report shooting, painful sensations starting in the lower back and extending down the legs. The pinched or pressured root of the nerve, located in the lower spine, causes the entire length of the nerve to react painfully. Massaging the legs and back, or making use of other techniques such as ice or heat, can provide some temporary relief of symptoms. But in order to really resolve sciatica, it’s necessary to correct the spinal imbalance that’s causing it in the first place.

Are You Suffering from Sciatica?

That’s where chiropractics comes in. By performing the right adjustments in the right place, a qualified practitioner is often able to relief pressure on the sciatic nerve. The result is a drastic reduction or complete elimination of symptoms. So how specifically will your chiropractor diagnose and treat sciatica?

Give us a call today for a free consultation!

The first step is diagnosis. It’s true that the problem is always nerve compression of some kind, but there are different problems that lead to this compression, and the condition can manifest in different ways. A skilled chiropractor will move carefully through the diagnostic process, including a physical examination and the use of tools such as MRI, x-ray, and specific nerve tests. Detailed personal medical history will also be taken into account. Once a specific diagnosis has been established, the chiropractor will design a treatment plan specifically for that individual patient. It will often involve a combination of spinal adjustments, head and cold therapies, electronic nerve stimulation, stretching exercises, and careful monitoring of progress. It’s possible that the right spinal adjustments will bring tangible relief almost immediately, and sometimes the underlying imbalance is corrected rather easily. In other cases, a combination of spinal adjustments and other therapeutic treatments will be necessary over a period of time to gradually lift the pressure and free the sciatic nerve to function normally. Patients should not expect immediate or complete results, but they should expect meaningful long-term results when they visit a skilled chiropractor for treatment of sciatica. Relief is within reach! For the millions of people who suffer from the frustrating condition known as sciatica, finding effective treatment is very high priority. Invasive treatments such as surgery, or the use of painkillers, are never ideal—such methods should be reserved for the most extreme cases. Natural, effective relief may be possible through chiropractics; but it’s necessary to find a truly qualified practitioner with years of experience in identifying and treating the condition. Once you have a skilled chiropractor in your corner, chances are excellent that your sciatica will improve significantly—if not disappear altogether.

Shore Recipes Parental Guidance I’ve had to adapt my favorite recipes to make them gluten-free, but have had less success with desserts, until now. This carrot cake has a moist, crumbly, rich texture, and is chock full of goodness. Most of my family eats gluten without ill-effect, but they didn’t even notice the change in this recipe. Substitute the gluten-free flour for regular if you wish, but this is the ideal dessert for a crowd of both gluten lovers and GF foodies! Enjoy!

Gluten Free Carrot Cake 1 ½ cups sugar

¾ cups vegetable oil 3 eggs 1 cup GF flour blend (I used Bob’s Red Mill) ⅔ cup GF oatmeal, ground fine in food processor

½ cup finely grated unsweetened coconut

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon ground ginger

3 cups shredded carrots

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ cups chopped walnuts

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cups raisins

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use GF cooking spray or grease and flour 2, 9 inch round cake pans. In a large bowl, beat together sugar, oil, eggs and vanilla until fluffy. Sift together dry ingredients and mix into wet. Carefully fold in carrots, walnuts and raisins and mix just until blended. Divide evenly into 2 prepared baking pans and bake for 40-45 minutes. The color will be dark brown, and cake will spring back from touch. Run knife along outer edge loosening cake slightly then allow to cool. Cream cheese frosting is suggested. Shown garnished with candied ginger.

You Go Girl Take Pride by Katherine Kehoe

take, we are paving the way for our daughters, our granddaughters, and our great-granddaughters. Don’t we want the best for them? Don’t we want to show them that they can do anything? Katherine Kehoe I see little girls who want to be When not writing for 08742, Katherine is a ballerinas, astronauts, veterinarians, Librarian and Drexel and teachers. I see girls who plan Graduate Student their weddings and girls who can’t wait to travel the world alone. I see girls who can’t wait to have children of their own and girls who love nothing more than to sit at home with a dog. Everyone wants something different out of life, but all women deserve to be able to obtain whatever it is that’s going to make their dreams come true. That might sound a little idealistic, but when we look back at these strong, powerful women in history, we can see how many of them were willing to go the extra mile to make sure they could grab hold of those dreams. They deserve to be celebrated, and so do we. We are all women, writing our history together, with every laugh, every tear, and every strong step forward in the face of adversity. We are amazing; let’s not let anyone forget it!

So, how many of us knew that March was Women’s History Month? This very often gets overlooked – even by women. Remember that movie “Hidden Figures” that came out in December? How many of us had ever heard of those women before? Sure, we all know a few familiar names of some radical ladies who rocked the boat, like Joan of Arc, Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, and Rosa Parks. But there are so many other incredible women who have been forgotten in time, even though they did astounding things. So, why does this matter? Why do we care about these now nameless, faceless women that history has left behind? A lot of us seem to glance over history, because, well, it’s a thing of the past. But the problem with that is, the past is what has put us where we are, and paying attention to what happened to get us here can help us decide where we want to go in the future. And as women, we owe it to ourselves to take a special interest in what other women have done. We all share the sisterhood of this gender, and many of our struggles are the same. Whether you identify as a feminist or not, whether you like pink and manicures or baseball and beer, if you are a lady, then you have some idea about the struggle for gender equality. But you may not understand just how far we’ve come – or what it took to get here. Women’s History Month didn’t even begin to originate until the 1980s. My point is, whatever your opinion is on current issues, it’s important to understand them. The past, or our history, has brought us to the present. And the present, our actions today, and our choices tomorrow, will determine where we’re headed in the future. With every action we

The Book Report “The Target” by David Baldacci A book review by Brian Favretto

Some novels are predictable. Within the first few chapters you have an idea where the plot line is headed, and how it will be resolved. “The Target” by David Baldacci is no such novel. The gripping first chapter discusses the mind of a killer, Earl Fontaine, who is locked away and dying in prison. Even behind the walls of a prison hospital, he plans to take away one more life before he dies. The book then moves to a second scene, set deep inside a secret compartment of The White House where The President is discussing a highly secretive plot to overthrow the government of North Korea, using CIA operatives that cannot know about the mission in advance, and will only have a small window of opportunity to get the job done. Next, Baldacci moves us to the bowels of a North Korean prison camp where a North Korean government assassin named Chung-Cha pulls off a very detailed and gruesome mission, killing four men with her bare hands. As I read about these three major events, each of which could probably have been stretched into a novel of its own, I couldn’t help but wonder where this story was going, and how these characters would clash later in the novel. I was hooked. “The Target” is the third book in a series which highlights CIA operative Will Robie. You do not have to read the first two in the series in order to understand that Robie and his partner Jessica Reel have the superhuman ability to survive against all odds. We learn much of Reel’s backstory in this book, but we are only given scraps of Robie’s past. Their mission in “The Target” is to eliminate the Supreme Leader of North Korea, an operation that would lead to the impeachment of The President if details were leaked. Due to the outcome of the previous novel, their boss/nemesis Evan Tucker wants the pair battle tested in the CIA’s extreme training facility called the “Burner Box”. Here, Robie and Reel are sure they have been made “the targets”, and they don’t expect to make it out alive. The North Korean operation changes drastically however, and they are expedited into the field. Soon, the North Korean government learns of the plot,

and enlists the talents of Chung-Cha to clean up the mess and take revenge on The United States. Robie and Reel are about to meet their match. The story line in “The Target” can seem a little choppy at times as Baldacci attempts to merge all these characters, but it is never short on action. It reads as a fast-paced novel, and at times became difficult to put down. Using multiple points of view, we are able to see the circumstances from the perspectives of each of these very different characters. Some of Baldacci’s ideas are pure fantasy, while others seem to ring true. We see the horrors of a North Korean prison camp and how that country treats its own citizens. We also see how that country views the United States and our ideals. I was left wondering how much of this is truth, and how much is conjecture. Regardless, what I like most about this novel is the amount of detail Baldacci uses to get us inside the heads of these characters. We can feel what they are feeling, and we can understand when they feel nothing. Ultimately, this novel turned into a most unlikely love story. Not a romantic love story that we most often think of in a work of fiction, but a story about the power of love itself, and how love can warm and soften even the coldest and hardest of hearts. As a human race, we need to know that there is meaning in our lives, and that we can find that meaning through love, hope and faith. It allows Jessica Reel, Chung-Cha and us as readers, the chance to make something good come from a bad situation. I also enjoyed learning a little bit about North Korea, a country that I may never have the opportunity to visit. Baldacci gave us a glimpse of Pyongyang, the most populated city in North Korea. He touched on the Pueblo Crisis and the U.S.S. Pueblo now serving its unintended purpose, perceived as a symbol of the bravery of North Korea and the evil of the U.S. empire. If you can get past the superhuman traits of protagonists Robie and Reel, I encourage you to read “The Target”. It will hold your interest, and it will keep you guessing at who “the target” really is. Who knows, it may even remind you about the strength of love in your own life. “The Target” can be found in all our local libraries, and wherever books are sold. “The Target”, 2014, Grand Central Publishing.

Shore Decor The Buzz Around Hexagons By Ashleigh Young

With April comes the promise of spring, so we thought it only fitting that we turn our attention to one of 2017’s buzziest trends … the humble hexagon. Hexagons remind us of nature, the sun, bees, hives and honeycombs and, when used in tandem with other 2017 home decor trends like mix and match patterns and jewel tones, they can bring your space to life in fresh and interesting ways. Geometric patterns first started appearing in all things home design in 2015 and are still going strong due to the fact that geometric patterns are a really versatile, timeless and elegant décor trend that can be used in many different interior styles from mid-century modern to coastal chic. If you think about it, geometric patterns have been around forever, appearing in the art, language and cultures of ancient civilizations in Asia and Africa. This trend never really goes away, but certain shapes do seem to come in and out of vogue each year. 2016 saw the rise of large, bright, mod and mostly square geometric shapes with sharp black outlines reminiscent of the 1920’s Art Deco trend and 80’s Pop Art movement. The Scandinavian “Hygge” movement brought delicate, organic lines and chevron shapes and patterns to the mainstream. Subway tiles and chevron patterns are out now and the 2017 movement towards incorporating more natural, organic shapes into home design has catapulted the hexagon to the forefront of the geometric trend. There are dozens of ways to incorporate hexagons into your home. The easiest way is, of course, through pillows, accessories and tabletop items and a trip to your favorite retailer is sure to net you tons of options. We found some great hexagonal side tables in all different materials: lucite, marble and metal, or wood being the most on-trend right now. We are especially loving the hexagon shaped, multi-functional “Cloud” table/desk (pictured) by Polish design duo Anna and Marek Lorens, combining form and function with the addition of clever storage areas and its modular approach as well as white marble and antique brass nesting side tables available at West Elm. Wallpaper or carpeting are also fabulous ways to incorporate this trend into your home and if you’re looking for some inspiration be sure to check out the wallpaper options at Cole & Son inspired by English decorator David Hicks, known for his “Hicks’ Hexagon” tasteful interlocking hexagon designs as seen in the powder room picture featured below. Hexagon tiles also look fresh and amazing as a backsplash in the kitchen, on the bathroom floor or in the shower. Using smaller shapes can add a daintiness and lightness to the look – adding depth and interest to monotone color schemes - with larger or different colored hexagon tiles adding a bit more drama and contrast in just the right places. We hope you have fun finding ways to bring this fresh and unique trend into your home this spring. Happy Decorating!

Rover Rescue Choosing the Right Breed by Lauren Kehoe

Have you ever heard the adage that dogs suit their owners? The media will often play this up in TV shows or films. They pair the Poodle with the rich and sophisticated business person, or the spiked collared Rottweiler with a buff tattoo shop owner. These things may be superficial and stereotypical, but to an extent there are certain dogs that are more fitting to certain owners.

Birdie’s Story

This dog is part of our shelter outreach program where we take dogs from overcrowded shelters in hopes of finding them a forever home here! We generally do not have much background info on them and cannot guarantee they are housebroken. They are all up to date on vaccines, spayed/neutered and microchipped.

All dogs are different. They each possess a unique Lauren Kehoe personality, like us. That being said, there are certain is an avid traits and behaviors more likely to come up in some animal lover breeds while not others. Pointers are famous for their and dog owner. awareness and bird hunting skills. Pugs are reasonably sedentary and can have breathing difficulties. German shepherds are famous for their intelligence, which is part of the reason they are often used as police or seeing eye dogs. Herding breeds like Collies can have nipping tendencies, possibly requiring more supervision around small children who can be compared to cattle in their eyes.

Birdie is a 3 year old hound mix transferred from an overcrowded shelter in NC. He is a big vocal boy who cannot wait to get out of the shelter and find a family to call his own. He is very fun and loves to run and play. He would make a great jogging partner! Please hurry in to see him today!

Pippy’s Story

Knowing behaviors of a group or breed of dogs can help one make the right choice when picking which kind to get. Shelters and rescues are full of all different breeds. It may not be possible to set your heart on one set breed and only look for that kind, but it can be narrowed down to breeds that may or may not be more suitable to your lifestyle. Someone who works long hours may not be able to sufficiently exercise higher energy dogs like Labrador Retrievers. A very fit, active person seeking a running partner may not be want to choose for a Basset Hound. Mastiffs would not be the best option for people who live in studio apartments. There are a number of books available that list common traits of certain breeds. The internet is also a great source for information. Many dogs in shelters are mixed breeds, or have uncertain lineage. Meeting with the dog on multiple occasions in this situation can help you get a better feel for their particular personality. If the shelter or rescue organization has some educated guesses on the breed or breeds, it can be helpful to go home and research. Knowing what to expect can help you be most prepared. Shelters can be stressful and overwhelming environment, and many dogs will wait to come out of their shell and show their true colors until they are in a more comfortable home. There are no set rules to behavior or guarantees that a dog will follow all of the typical personality traits of its breed, but the more information you have on the general traits, the more educated decision you can make. It’s good to assess the overall situation honestly, without discrimination, and thoroughly consider the positives and negatives to different breeds and personalities. A high level of preparation can help you choose the best fit and help ensure that both human and dog can live a happy healthy life.

Kobe’s Story

1 year old, transfer from Associated Humane Society-Newark.

His gorgeous boy has the softest gray fur ever - he feels just like your favorite cashmere sweater when you pet him, and he’s happy to let you do just that. Look into those beautiful sage green eyes and you can see that a gentle spirit lies within. A newcomer to JSAC and still a little shy, Kobe warms up nicely to a tender touch and he is beginning to feel comfortable with his surroundings in our free roaming cat room. He often settles himself in one of the covered cubbies on a cat tower, but with a little encouragement he will come out to meet you. Even the shyest cat can be a playful and loving companion, and with Kobe once you scratch the surface you will be pleasantly surprised at the gem that lies beneath. Given time and patience we know that he will blossom into a loving best friend for some very lucky person. We think that ‘to know him is to love him’!

Cathy’s Story

3 1/2 years old, transfer from Associated Humane Society-Newark.

This pretty little tortie is a young and active girl who currently resides in our free roaming cat room, where she mixes well with the other feline residents. Dubbed ‘Chatty Cathy’, this little one is happy to tell you what’s on her mind with the cutest little meow ever! She’s friendly, affectionate, and happy to interact with feline and human friends alike. She enjoys a good playtime when the string toy comes out, and in her quiet moments she enjoys a nice brushing. Then she’s off to one of the high spots on a cat tree where she can gaze out the window and settle in for a nap. If you have room in your home and heart for this sweet little lady, please stop by to meet Cathy. She’s waiting to go home!

The Power of Positive Thinking Resetting Your Circadian Rhythm by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc, CRMT

As we creep closer into the Spring season the days filled with light get longer. Our bodies yearn for more sunlight and vitamin D. The smell of the sweet air and warmer breeze has us fighting against going to bed at a decent hour. We want the days to last longer all while still getting enough shut eye to function the next morning when the sun is back up early again the next day. Adults have a difficult time resetting or settling back in to a circadian rhythm that it’s just as hard if not harder for a small child or infant. Having your circadian rhythm can have us out-of-whack or feeling disoriented and exhausted. There are a few holistic techniques that can help you and your family settle back into getting more sleep on time as we all spring ahead by an hour and reset. The uses and absences of light therapy are very successful and it is much easier for the body to spring ahead than it is to fall behind. 1. Take your infant or child outside during the time of the setting of the sun. Turn all eyes to the sun just as it dips below the horizon. Do this for three or four nights in a row during this transition and that should do the trick. Try not to look directly into the sun for a long duration as this can hurt the eyes. 2. For baby, make sure the routine hasn’t changed. Babies and children love routine and that routine sets the circadian rhythm for them. A massage with a very little bit of essential oil Lavender mixed with a very little bit of organic olive oil as a carrier oil. A massage after a bath is the ticket to baby getting drowsy. Adults can perform this ritual on themselves as well. A bit of self-love too. 3. Believe it or not taking a flashlight and placing it behind the knees one at a time can reset a circadian rhythm for children and adults alike. You can hold the light just behind the leg in the bend of the knee area for about 2 minutes on each side. 4. Using a Himalayan Salt Lamp at night helps to ignite the “night light” mood and the lamp itself has so many medicinal properties. A Himalayan salt lamp releases negative ions into the air and purifies the air you breathe. 5. Play around with the time that you go to bed and wake up. For this time of year it is best to go to bed a bit later than your normal time to ensure your nice and tired. After about a week or so you should be all reset! Not every technique works for everyone. These techniques are holistic so try each one separately or collectively. A supplement of melatonin should be a last resort and should be under the care of a healthcare professional. This isn’t insomnia but rather just a need to reset your circadian rhythm. If you have a technique that you use that isn’t listed here and that works for you or your family we would love to hear about it! Drop us an email at info@integrativehealingandwellness.com and we will feature your technique in our monthly newsletter.

Globe Trotting Breezy Beaches, Butterflies and Bon Bini Festival: Aruba Awaits by Denise DiStephan

If you love the idea of first-rate Caribbean beach time with consistent warm, sunny weather, calm waters and cooling breezes, check out Aruba.

assortment of butterflies of every color and stripe flitting about and, if you want, listen to a riveting lesson about caterpillars, cocoons and butterflies.

And when you visit the island, just north of Venezuela and Colombia, you can dine al fresco without seagulls dive-bombing your meals. I may have seen one gull gliding by during our first lunch of our five-day visit to the island’s Palm Beach. But we were able to eat outside every day with only a stray sparrow flitting about occasionally.

Yet another two thumbs up for visiting DePalm Tour’s private island. On our last full day on the island, we took a DePalm tour bus to the company’s private island and went snorkeling there. For $99 per person, visitors get a tour bus and ferry ride and partial-day pass to the island, breakfast, lunch, open bar, banana boat ride, snorkeling on a coral reef teeming with a wide variety of sea life, and zip lining. The fee for a full-day pass is $104.

Also mercifully missing were three of the other Jersey Shore summer staples: humidity, mosquitos and rough surf. If you don’t enjoy a dip without jumping waves, you’ll be disappointed. But you can easily rent a jet ski or tube behind one if you need more bounce at the beach.

The zip line is small, which may be great for younger kids, but won’t be a thrill for veteran zip liners.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn at Palm Beach, in the bustling tourist section known as “the high rise district” because that’s where all the high-rise hotels are. For our first trip there, we actually liked being in the busy area. After the five-hour plane ride, it was really nice to walk to a restaurant with good food out on a pier right next to our hotel and to be near convenience stores, restaurants, shops, local town buses and cabs.

My husband and I opted for the half-day stay on the island. But if we had traveled there with young children, we would have wanted the full-day ticket so kids would have more time to frolic on a mammoth jungle gym near the turtle shelter and the hermit crabs crawling about. If you think hermit crabs don’t come any bigger than the tiny ones on the Jersey Shore boardwalks, you’ll be amazed at the size of the ones on Aruba.

That restaurant is Pelican’s Nest on Pelican Pier and if you get Carlos as your server you’ll be lucky. The fellow who waited on us the second time had a challenged understanding of the term “customer service” (and I’m being kind).

We enjoyed swimming in the turquoise blue water in a cove where a pelican was fishing near us and relaxing on lounge chairs on the beach there. It wasn’t crowded at all on the Saturday we were there. Back on the main island, I highly recommend attending the Tuesday evening Bon Bini Festival downtown, where you can enjoy local food, music, dance and a fascinating presentation on the history and most prevalent languages of the island.

Despite that the high-rise district is “built up,” it’s quiet and relaxing, even while sitting outside at night. As for price tags, we paid more than $300 per night at the Holiday Inn for Monday through Saturday nights during the first week of February. The hotel was clean and, like most hotels on Aruba, it has a casino. And in Aruba sports betting is legal.

And do not miss dinner at Passions on the Beach, the Flying Fishbone and Madame Janette, where the food is divine and the atmosphere unbeatable. The first two are spectacular dining on the beach experiences and the last is al fresco in a large backyard setting festooned with twinkling white lights.

Don’t visit Aruba without a trip to the Butterfly Farm, which was a short ride from our hotel. Walk through the lush gardens, enjoy the wide

The Muse The Jersey Shore’s Hometown Guy by Charles Nolan

While the shore along Ocean and Monmouth counties, from Brick and Toms River to Red Bank and Long Branch, has a vibrant musical and artistic scene, Fallon is our current king. A nationally touring act residing in Asbury, popular among New Jerseyans and the world who returns that love.

The only thing better than seeing an artist play a hometown show is seeing an artist play a sold-out hometown show in a smaller venue than they usually fill. Brian Fallon’s two nights at the House of Independents in Asbury Park were less an acoustic solo performance than they were a late-night sing-along session in a dorm room. Fallon and his 500-plus back-up singers moved through most of his debut solo LP both nights, as well as a handful of covers and songs by Fallon’s rock band The Gaslight Anthem, including “Blue Jeans and White T-Shirts,” where the narrator promises a life of nights on Cookman Avenue and the Asbury beach.

There’s something so much stronger about loving someone who loves you back: there’s a reason Prince comes to mind when you think of Minnesota musicians or Springsteen when you think of New Jersey, even if Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra, respectively, may have just as fair a claim to that title based on success. On Saturday night, I was 10 feet away from Brian on stage as he bantered, joked, sang about personal relationships, triumphs, and issues, and people like me. It’s this requitement that will, in 30 years, make this Jersey Shore native proud to say, “I saw him in 2017 at a place on Cookman Avenue.”

Although active for over a decade and quite successful within the national music industry – rave reviews from established publications like Rolling Stone and NME, albums in the top 5 on the US Billboard 200 and guest appearances with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band – the Red Bank-born, New Brunswick-raised Fallon is still on his way up. Which is what makes nights like Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4, special for the largest culturally-significant city in our local area and those of us lucky enough to make it out.
