The Power of Positive Thinking Improving Your Child’s Emotional Intelligence As this school year nears to a close, us parents sigh a relief of homework and busy sports schedules. But our children may sigh from a bigger relief, those of worksheets and standardized tests. Research being published today reflects that a child’s EQ or Emotional Intelligence is far more determinant of their success, happiness, and fulfillment more than their IQ, or academic intelligence.

“Emotional Intelligence is defined as the ability to recognize, take responsibility for, and appropriately express your emotions, as well as recognize and understand others’ emotions, too.” One develops his/her emotional intelligence at any age where it was thought to be something that was inherited from their parents. This is largely impacted by our environment and those that take care of us and teach us as we age, making emotional intelligence teachable and learnable.

So how do you teach your child to be emotionally intelligent?

Emotional intelligence is commonly defined by four attributes: 1. Self-Management – You’re able to control impulsive feelings and behaviors, manage your emotions in healthy ways, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and adapt to changing circumstances.

2. Self-Awareness – You recognize your own emotions and how they affect your thoughts and behavior. You know your strengths and weaknesses and have self-confidence.

3. Social Awareness – You can understand the emotions, needs, and concerns of other people, pick up on emotional cues, feel comfortable socially, and recognize the power dynamics in a group or organization.

4. Relationship Management – You’re able to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well in a team, and manage conflict.

Show all your emotions and include your child.

As adults and parents, we are all faced with day to day emotions and often times we try and shield our children from our problems. We may cry in the other room. As a parent, sharing your emotions may feel inappropriate but it’s exactly how your child will navigate situations with emotions in the future. It begins with engaging your child when you’re feeling and expressing your needs. Perhaps, you may discuss with your child when you are sad that you need a moment to release some tears and that it is therapeutic to cry. Or if you’re feeling anger you might express how this anger feels, like fire in your chest or your belly. Taking the few minutes to express an emotion with a way to respond to that emotion is teaching them to express their emotions and use Nonviolent Communications.

The tools in which we achieve these goals is by using the following senses for example. Five things I see, four things I can hear, three things I can touch, two things I can smell, and one thing I can taste. This allows us to address our emotions and the situation at hand instead of trying to find a negative distraction from them such as, eating, watching TV, or compulsively playing video games. Sometimes we may need to practice box breathing or a Take-5 breathing technique. Breathing in for a count of five, holding it for a count of five, and releasing the breath for a count of five.

If you’re not quite ready to express the ‘negative’ emotions to your child perhaps start with changing selfdefeating moods and attitudes with positive ones. The positive emotions cue our children that emotions are acceptable such as, excitement and happiness. Learning the skills of emotional intelligence enable us to override stress and stay healthy and happy, it’s important to first take a look at things we do that can block our ability to acquire new habits.

Follow through on your hopes and dreams. Aspire for your child to follow in your foot-steps. “Emotional intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence; it is not the triumph of heart over head — it is the unique intersection of both.”

How Do You Know if Physical Therapy is Right for You? People seek physical therapy for a long list of reasons – including everything from sports injuries to auto accidents. Sometimes a doctor will recommend physical therapy as a part of a larger treatment regimen, following a specific injury. Other times, people find their way to physical therapy for their own reasons – often because they’ve tried a number of other things, and are still experiencing symptoms and/or limitations that they’d like to address.

A lot of people don’t even consider physical therapy because they don’t think their injury or ailment “qualifies” – but the reality is, physical therapy is a broad discipline that can be effectively applied in a whole range of scenarios. Common sports injuries such as tennis elbow, bursitis, tendonitis, ligament strains and tears, fractures, muscle tears, and so much more – these are examples of problems that can be undeniably helped and improved by engaging with the process of physical therapy. ***It’s also very helpful to know that someone is on your side, cheering for you, and using a depth of specific knowledge and training in order to help you reach your therapy goals. Rover Rescue Reading Your Dogs Body Language

Dogs use nonverbal communication as much as we do. We can tell a great deal about our pups by the movements they make with their bodies. A lot of dog bites could be prevented by watching dog body language and respecting their nonverbal cues. Paying attention to posture and position helps keep us and our dogs safe and happy.

A dog who is fearful, nervous, or uncomfortable in a situation will often have its entire body rigid and stiff. We can look at individual body parts to help confirm observations of how a dog is feeling.

Slow or still tail wags or a tail between the legs are typically a sign of distress. Ears pressed back against the head, tight or curled lips, and large intense eyes showing a significant amount of white are also warning signs. Yawning, tongue flicks, body freezing and avoiding eye contact indicate anxiety. A general alert attitude and level of attentiveness is shown by ears held forward and upward.

A dog who is relaxed will have an overall relaxed body posture.

The tail is usually loose, and if it is wagging it is fast. The whole back end of a dog wiggling means excitement. Loose, soft ears and a wide-open mouth are a sign that a dog is content. When a dog’s front end leans forward while the back end stands up in a bow, any activity that follows is a form of play.

The second line of communication Lauren Kehoe dogs utilize is verbal. If their hackles is an avid animal lover are raised and their teeth are showing, and dog owner. they would next let out a growl or bark.

This verbal cue is a sign of defense for the person to back away or stop doing whatever they are doing. If the dog offers a play bow and then growls or barks, the vocalization is part of play rather than a warning. It means that the dog wants the dog or human they are playing with to interact and play with them.

Dogs don’t speak our language, so it is necessary to adapt to theirs’. It is difficult at first, but after a little bit of practice, we can read dogs like pros. There are lots of books and resources out there to help us better understand dog communication. Taking advantage of these and practicing reading dogs day by day creates a safer environment.

Body language is the first line of communication available to dogs. The more sensitive to human body language, the better our communication and relationships will be. The same applies for dogs.

If we can observe more subtle movements and respond accordingly to body positioning, we can respond appropriately and prevent it from escalating.

Back to Earth Wellness Movement for Pet Food There is an increasing interest in pet health and nutrition, pet owners want to trust the products they purchase. Awareness of ingredients has led to significant market growth and opportunity in the pet food industry. One way companies are earning consumer trust is by going “clean label”. Clean label means offering transparency around both processing and ingredients. Offering a shorter list of ingredients that are familiar to pet owners is also important. People have become skeptical of highly processed foods for themselves and in turn are looking critically at their beloved pets diet as well.

Take a walk down a pet food aisle in a grocery store and you will notice many of the same label callouts you see in other parts of the store. For example “contains no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives”, “non-gmo”, and “locally sourced”. We know the majority of US households are buying organic food on a regular basis and this trend is starting to influence how pet parents are buying food for their pets. There are many parallels between pet foods and the rest of the food industry. The top trends are actually identical as pet parents are increasingly applying a human lens when choosing which foods to purchase their furry family member. Ingredients used in human foods are becoming commonplace in pet foods, including fruits and vegetables. Many pet parents want to know the purpose of the ingredients and will no longer settle for inexpensive fillers or anything artificial. The humanization trend in pet food is one of the primary market trends driving a plethora of new products. Petco in a press release dated 11/13/2018 stated “In January 2019, Petco will being removing dog and cat foods and treats with artificial ingredients, both from store shelves and ecommerce, with a commitment to complete the process by May 2019. Some of the more than 40 artifical ingredients Petco is eliminating include FD&C Red No. 3, Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), Butylated hytroxytoluene (BHT), Glycerol tributyrate, and benzaldehyde, among others.” Petco is inviting pet food companies to join their mission and even working hand-in-hand with some to pursue potential ingredient changes to meet their new stringent ingredient standards. By May 2019 they will not carry either specific products or the brand entirely – and will help pet parents affected by such a change to safely transition to a new food or brand that they believe is healthier for their pets.

More than half (56%) of pet parents surveyed by Packaged Facts in January and February 2018 said they strongly agree or somewhat agree that they trust pet food formulations backed by scientific research. That figure jumps to 62% when the scientific basis of dietary components is communicated by a veterinarian. The survey proves that in general, pet owners have about the same amount of trust in all types of pet food manufacturers. It seems to be less about the brand and company and more about the communication of what’s inside. The transparency in ingredients and communication of the process if the foundation of the clean-label movement in the pet food industry. Innovative pet food brands are even using stories and certifications to build their image based on ingredient story. Whether the story focuses on sourcing or sustainability or protein type, this type of story helps pet parents feel proud of the brands they purchase.

It’s all about talking to pet owners and providing them assurance that they are making the best choices.

Now that summer is squarely in our line of sight, we thought we would take things outdoors and look ahead to some of this summer’s hottest patio design trends. From recreating your favorite vacation spots to saving the planet, there are no shortage of amazing ideas out there to take outdoor living to the next level. Whatever design option you choose to experiment with this summer, the most important part is to take the time to enjoy it with your closest family and friends. Happy Decorating!

The dual rise of sustainability and technology have made “living eco” a breeze. There are a variety of earth friendly outdoor furniture options popping up everywhere from Home Depot to Crate and Barrel, made from everything from sustainable, renewable woods (like the Serenity Health Sunnydaze 2-person lounger bed) to manmade resins like Resysta, made from rice husks, salt and mineral oil. As I write this my birthday is quickly approaching. I love my birthday and can usually stretch the celebrations out for a week or so – longer if it’s a milestone birthday! Lately – I’ve had gifting on my mind. Not the typical – wrapped in a box with a pretty bow- kind of gifting though.

But – when you stop and follow it all the way through it’s actually much more meaningful than that.

Which then creates conversations and connection in the shop. Whatever interests you – practice it. I often play around with different looks on the mannequins. I try different filters and techniques for photographing and posting to social media. I move things around, I paint , I redecorate all in order to keep our customers interested and engaged.

Wearing clothes that fit feels good!

Wearing clothes in the summer that fit and let air hit your skin feels good too. Feeling terribly uncomfortable outside in the heat because you’re wearing jeans and a long sleeve is going to bring on the inner critic who will probably tell you that if you were skinnier you could wear shorts. It may even remind you that if you were skinnier you could wear the jean shorts you’ve held onto for the last 12 years since before you had your three kids. It’s time to take charge!

Do you find yourself caught in a place of fear or dread or maybe both at the thought of shedding the clothing that has covered you all winter? I want you to ask yourself what you’re afraid will happen if you uncover your body and enjoy the warmth of the air on your skin.

There are many, many people who dread this time of year. I have clients who don’t want to show this body part or that body part because they feel it doesn’t hold up to the standards for showing their body in public. It’s time to examine these so called standards for what they really are-body shaming.

Women are the primary recipients of body shaming but men are not immune.

The standards of beauty for women are mostly unachievable for the general population, yet that is what people strive for.

This creates a no-win situation for women, an endless parade of self-criticism and shame over not looking like a model who starves herself and whose picture is airbrushed so photos of an unachievable standard can torture the real women.

For some women the criticism and shame, real and self-imposed, create an emptiness that gets filled with food. The backlash of the shame creates an inability to control eating, further adding fuel to the self-criticism and shame.

Imagine yourself wearing a bathing suit and going to the beach.

What comes up? If you didn’t have to worry about what others think would you do it? What if it were a beach full of strangers?

Well, no one has the right to comment on your appearance at all. No one. What they think is not something we are privy to and neither is it any of our business.

So, if your appearance is only your business it’s time to work on your thoughts. Start where you are. If you shun shorts maybe its time to get a pair of longer shorts. If you shun short sleeves go get some tee shirts. Dabble in putting yourself out there.

If you criticize other women for wearing clothing you’d be afraid to, stop yourself and honor those women. Don’t project your own inner critic onto them. Be a part of the rebellion against impossible standards. Be yourself and be proud! Until next time, eat healthy, be happy!

This is an endless loop of negative emotions and self-defeating behaviors. What if there was another way? What if, instead of beating ourselves up over not fitting an unachievable standard, we fought back? What if we decided that fat shaming wouldn’t work?

What if each of us decided that our bodies are beautiful and miraculous and that if we want to wear a tank top we would? Or a bathing suit? Or shorts? Why can’t people, especially women, wear what is comfortable?

What if, instead of

beating ourselves up over not fitting an

Parental Guidance Hope

This single word can provide light in the darkest of days, and strength for the most difficult battles in life.

Without hope, we have nothing but despair. Aristotle said that youth are easily deceived because they are quick to hope. It almost sounds as though he was describing a negative character trait. I disagree, hope is beautiful, it is innocent, it is promising and it is dreaming about something better beyond the horizon. Hope is something we all need.

I remember doing a clinical rotation just out of college 22 years ago. I was working in a rehabilitation facility and had a patient with a recent amputation. I was still so naive. During a team meeting, a surgeon had remarked that the patient wasn’t doing well, and additional amputations might be needed.

He was concerned that our current treatment goals may be giving his patient false hope. That moment stays with me, I couldn’t help but think, but what if hope is all this man has right now? I questioned my role as a therapist, was I to take hope away?

Parents struggle with finding this balance as well. On one extreme there are parents who will send their children off to college with the belief that unicorns prance and play at the end of the rainbow.

Unrealistic? Yes, but hopeful. On the other end there are children who are never provided with a glimmer of hope. They are told of all the worlds ills, wars, diseases, financial ruin, physical and emotional hurts.

I see some of these children in school. Many can talk about TV news stories with great detail, and the fear is visible in their eyes. Too much graphic talk and news stories can cause a young child to believe the horrors are occurring right outside their door. Their hope is chipped away, next anxiety and fear set in. As parents we need to remind our children of all the reasons to maintain hope. Remind them that there are police officers and soldiers fighting to keep us safe, doctors are finding cures and treatments, there are strangers helping each other rebuild, and that great people often rise in the darkest times.

Find the balance in your parenting style so that your child is prepared for the world, and hopeful that it can be made better.

Many years ago I worked with a child who was legally blind, autistic, had albinism and had just arrived in the US at the age of 5 saying only “Mama” and “pee-pee”. He previously lived in a remote area of his native country with his grandmother and many cousins. My boss at the time was dumbfounded.

Convinced there was little we could do to help he asked me to evaluate him and he would try to find a placement elsewhere. This year that young man is graduating from his public school, he speaks well, argues even better, runs cross-country, track and wrestles. He reads and he writes. He can make phone calls and send emails. He has friends and is an important part of his school community. He wants a job, a girlfriend with blond hair, and to be independent. He has hope. And he shared it with everyone who touched his life, because hope is contagious.

Hope. The longer you hold onto it, the more it can be shared. Catch it, nurture it and pass it onto to your children. Most importantly, never destroy it.

I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge.

That myth is more potent than history.

That dreams are more powerful than facts.

That hope always triumphs over experience.

That laughter is the only cure for grief.

And I believe that love is stronger than death.
