Chiropractic Care for Seniors: What are the Benefits? By Tony Garrow, D.C.
Anyone over 60 will tell you that aging comes with some great perks. For one thing, you have more time to pursue your hobbies and interests, and fewer obligations to deal with on a day-to- day basis. But there are also unique health challenges that come with aging, and the average senior spends a lot of time researching ways to stay fit and healthy. Diet and exercise are obviously two huge components of senior health. At the same time, there are any number of dietary and exercise “fads” that come and go. It can be difficult to know what’s legitimate and what’s better left alone. Chiropractic care is something many seniors consider at some point during their search. This is particularly true for any senior who experiences back or neck pain on a regular basis. The prospect of getting immediate, tangible relief from pain is very promising. In fact, it may seem “too good to be true.” That’s why it’s important to take a practical, realistic look at chiropractic care for seniors. What are the actual benefits that people experience on a regular basis? 1. Relieving pain: Chiropractic care is statistically proven to relieve painful symptoms that are caused by musculoskeletal conditions of the spine and back. Such a condition may be related to an injury, abnormality, or even poor posture. Bone structures weaken over time; we’re more likely to experience painful symptoms as we age. Often times, seniors use pain medication for
immediate relief— but this does not address the underlying problem. Chiropractic care for seniors often consists of very gentle manipulations that nonetheless have tangible pain-relieving effects over the long term.
Dr. Tony Garrow & Dr. Susan Nemiroff
2. Better balance and motion: Seniors often sustain injuries as a result of losing balance and/or falling down. In fact, these injuries can be some of the most painful and debilitating out there. Many people who seek chiropractic care report better balance during everyday activities and exercise. Increased range of motion is another common benefit that comes from gentle chiropractic adjustments to stretch, open, and re-aligns the body. 3. Increased circulation and more energy: In addition to helping the spine and joints stay healthy as people age, chiropractic care can also have beneficial effects on the central nervous system. Spinal health is closely related to how we feel and function in dayto- day life, so it makes sense that chiropractic adjustments can benefit the body as a whole. Increased circulation, a decrease in nervous disorders and/ or symptoms, higher energy levels throughout the day, and even better mental focus are all documented benefits of chiropractics for seniors. Should you see a chiropractor? This is, of course, a personal health decision to be made only by you. However, it’s important to be aware that many seniors do report tangible benefits from regular or periodic chiropractic adjustments. Does this mean that chiropractic care is a “cure all” for seniors, or that there are no risks involved? Not at all. But if you find a truly qualified and reputable chiropractor, you can rest assured that the consultation you receive will be entirely focused on what’s best for you—even if it means recommending against chiropractic adjustments in your case.

The Power of Positive Thinking Visions of Health by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc, CRMT
According to the World Health Organization, “health is more than the absence of disease. Health is a state of optimal well-being.” Our optimal well-being comes from being well in mind, body, and spirit. The whole person needs to be in balance and not just the physical. One aspect of the physical that is used in holistic medicine is Iridology. Iridology is the analysis by examination of the iris of the eye and has been around since at least 1670. Approximately 28,000 nerve endings end in the iris without medical e∂xplanation. Just as organs are represented in the hand, foot, ear, tongue and spinal cord, they also have a specific place in the iris of the eye. Controversial yet amazing, iridology can show constitutional strengths and weaknesses in the iris as well as toxic accumulation. Tissue integrity throughout the body can be assessed by observing color and structure of the iris and any changes to the iris that take place over time. It’s ‘marriage’ partner is an art and science of nutrition. By gaining an understanding of the body we attain and maintain our health. If the eye is healthy so is the whole body. The eye is the light of the body. An Iridologist or a Natural Doctor that uses iridology has been referred to as the ‘Enlightened One’, someone who has ‘seen the light’ by putting light into dark places. On the flip side there are things that iridology is not. Iridology is not Ophthalmology and is not a diagnosis. It is simply the analysis of the iris. Keep in mind, a single method of analysis, whatever means, is not perfect in life. So why do our eyes change? Everything has a frequency including colors, sounds, foods, herbs, phones, computers, emotions and communication of the nervous system. Chameleons change color based on the frequency of the underlying colors. Similarly, the frequencies of the organs and toxins in the body can resonate in the iris for a change of color and patterns. The iris shows the health of the tissue and organs in the body. Technically there are only two types of eye colors, a blue eye or a brown eye. That is the base color of your eyes. How the colors and patterns shift within your eyes after birth is an indication of the frequency of the overall health or toxins within your body. Many conditions alter the integrity of the eye. For example, changes in climate or altitude, changes in blood circulation or blood pressure, chemical deficiencies and in excesses, toxic settlements, inherent weaknesses, glandular imbalances, metabolic upsets, oxygenation of blood, trauma, psychosomatic influences, and more. What the iris does not show is surgeries, stones, pregnancy, or your expiration date. We cannot forget the use of our eyes to communicate to one another. We can give a loved one a look or an expression on how we are feeling at that moment. Women dress their eyes in make-up and may even use their eyes to flirt. Men can use their eyes to show interest or not in a conversation. So, the next time you dress your eyes in make-up use them to flirt with someone, or communicate through them to say ‘look at me’, keep in mind all the more wonderful purposes your eyes have.

Shore Recipes When the weather starts to turn cooler, there is nothing better than a warm kitchen, smelling of fresh baked cookies. This recipe is one of my most rquested...happy baking to all!
Fall is by far my favorite season when it comes to cooking, the cooler temperatures are a great excuse to start making soup again. Pumpkin flavors are everywhere but this butternut squash recipe is a top request from my family. Roasting the squash first deepens its flavor, and brings out an earthy sweetness. If you top this with some toasted parmesan cheese crisps and add a salad and you have the perfect meal!
Cinnamon Roll Cookies (makes about 3 dozen)
3 cups all purpose flour ¼ tsp. baking powder ½ cup light brown sugar 2 tsp. cinnamon ½ cup light corn syrup
½ tsp. baking soda ½ cup butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 large egg
Butternut Squash Soup
1 large butternut squash, peeled and cut into large cubes about 3 lbs whole. (Some grocery stores carry cut squash in the produce section if you don’t want to cut it yourself). 3 medium shallots coarsely sliced 2 cloves of garlic, peeled 1 large apple peeled and cubed ½ tsp. thyme 1 tsp fresh ground ginger ¼ tsp curry ½ tsp cinnamon 1 Tbsp. brown sugar 2 pods of Knorr homestyle chicken stock 7-8 cups of water Olive oil Half and half salt and pepper to taste
Filling: Mix together ¼ cup softened butter, ½ cup brown sugar, 3 tsp. cinnamon, ½ tsp. vanilla extract In a large bowl beat together softened butter, sugar and egg until fluffy. Add baking soda, baking powder and vanilla. Mix in corn syrup. Add sifted flour 1 cup at a time until well blended. Divide dough into 2 and wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour. Allow chilled dough to soften for 10 minutes at room temperature, then roll onto floured wax paper into a rectangle approximately 6”x15”. Spread half of the filling on each piece and use wax paper to roll into tight pinwheels. Chill dough again for at least 1 hour before cutting. Place cut slices about ½” thick and place on cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 10 to11 minutes. When cool drizzle with a confectioners sugar glaze.
Place cut squash, apples, shallots and garlic in 2 large roasting pans. Drizzle with olive oil and turn to coat evenly. Sprinkle with thyme, ginger, curry, cinnamon, brown sugar, salt and pepper. Place in a 400 degree oven for 45 minutes until slightly golden. In a large heavy bottomed pot place water and chicken stock. Allow to warm over low heat. Add roasted squash and stir. Next, puree with an immersion blender until smooth. Cook for 10 more minutes over low heat. Ladle soup into bowls and drizzle a tablespoon of half and half. Garnish with parmesan toasts. Enjoy!

Parental Guidance Simplicity By Maureen Whelan
Recently in my life I’ve found myself wanting more of this. It sounds ironic, to want more simplicity. Some time ago my mother gave me a book saying she thought it would be something I’d like. She was right, it was something I liked, it just took me 2 years to find the time to read it. When I finished, I wondered why hadn’t found the time sooner. Slow Family Living is written by Bernadette Noll. The author is from my hometown and comes from a large family as well. She writes about how her early life relationships formed her adult goals. Relationships with her parents as well as her 8 siblings, were full of exploration, love, understanding, and forgiveness. Like myself, family provided a sense of belonging to something bigger, she calls this “connectedness”. It was a theme that resonated deeply with me. As a parent, what I want most from my children, is to be present in their lives throughout my time here on earth and I want them to be part of each other’s life when I’m gone. I believe it is what most parents want. So how do we get it? Connectedness can not be created in a vacuum of solitude. It is created through frequent, and meaningful interactions with one another and with our children. Interactions involving tender touch, eye contact, conversation, laughter and quiet. It is difficult to create when your children are in organized activities every day after school. Yelling at your kids from the sideline through a fence will not create connectedness to you, their parent. Connectedness is difficult to create in a digital world filled with screens, game boxes and virtual realities. I am not proposing that you throw these things away all together, but begin slowly carving away so you have less of those things cluttering your life. What you are left with is more simplicity. More time to enjoy your spouse, more energy to enjoy your children, more creativity to explore what interests you, and more air to breathe. I’ve had to learn to say no. There is no shame in politely declining an invitation to an event that you have no desire to attend. No explanation is needed. A simple “Thank you for inviting me, but I won’t be able to make it” is freedom. You have not only just eliminated one thing from your calendar, but you’ve also just eliminated the decision making of what to wear, what to bring, and who will babysit. Best of all I’ve just carved out a slot to engage in an activity I love, and have my kids join me. I’m lucky that I love to cook. Though it’s my brother who takes on the tasks of organizing and cooking for 50 during our annual beach week, we all come together to contribute in one way or another. It reminds me of my childhood, and how we all pitched in to complete the daily chores of a family of 10. My brothers would haul the garbage down the long drive while my sister and I were holed up in the kitchen making what seemed like 47 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for school the next day. Cooking brought us together. Taco tuesday is a night my 7 year old bellies up to the counter to grate cheese and slice olives. In that few minutes, when she is eating olives off her fingertips, we are eye to eye across the counter, I feel connected. Slow Family Living is a reminder of what is important, what brings happiness and ways to create clarity in one’s life. Bernadette Noll provides a comprehensive list of strategies that can be adopted to fit a variety of families. Mostly she reminds parents to ignore the chatter of media. Ignore the cliched sayings about the drudgery of parenting young children or teenagers. And for a few hours each day ignore the chirps, tweets, and dings of our screens. Take daily moments to brea the, appreciate, watch, and love your family. Create togetherness by doing projects, clearing schedules, decluttering and playing. Enjoy simple activities of daily life with each other, and you will begin to find beauty and peace. Look into the eyes of each family member, listen to their needs, hold their hand, and love them.

Back to the Earth Shinrin-yoku — ”Forest Bathing” by Natalie Berko
Many trees, especially evergreens release aromatic chemicals called phytoncides that have proven to open up airways and increase immune responses to illness and cancer. The increasing popularity of Shinrin-yoku has naturally led to the development of forest therapy excursions which are guided paid-for experiences or freely performed solo. When embarking on a forest bathing trip there are 5 key elements to keep in mind to ensure all of your senses are immersed.
Over thousands of years humans have effectively become an indoor species. This is especially true when we think about city dwellers, and office jobs. Efforts to combat this indoor epidemic have become increasingly more popular. A growing number of Americans have been adopting the Japanese practice called Shinrin-yoku. The term was coined in 1982 by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, literally translates to “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing” and refers to the process of soaking up the smells, sounds and sights of a natural setting to promote physiological and psychological health. The benefits of forest bathing go beyond the romanticism of Thoreau’s Walden’s Pond. Today we have hard scientific facts to support the claims of health benefits that have been touted for years. Throughout human evolution we’ve spent 99% of our time in a natural environment. Today over 70% of people in the United States live in urbanized areas and are spending less time in the great outdoors than ever before. Nature based recreation has declined up to 35% in the past 40 years. Forest Bathing has a positive impact on a number of stress markers. Including but not limited to decreasing blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones. When one feels relaxed the parasympathetic nervous system becomes activated, which is the opposite of our “fight-or-flight” response. Our brain turns down parts that are associated with executive functions like planning, problem solving and organization, while engaging in parts associated with empathy and pleasure. Creative energy is spiked when we take time to connect with nature. Nature has inspired authors like Henry David Thoreau and Jack Kerouac as well as painters like Vincent Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keefe. Japanese researchers believe that at least some of the positive health benefits are derived from the smells of the trees themselves.

1. See the trees, the plants growing under foot, the moss and lichen. Take in the full scope of the forest looking high and low observing colours, shapes and textures. Take your time and soak up the atmosphere. 2. Hear the rustling of leaves, the birds chattering, or the running of water through a brook. Listen for the subtle sounds of your surroundings. 3. Feel the earth beneath your feet, the softness of a wildflower, and the roughness of a tree’s trunk. 4. Smell the fresh air and the evergreens, take deep slow breathes and feel the air circulating through your lungs. 5. Taste the pine needles or bring a mug of gingko leaf tea. (Be sure to accurately identify any plant you are going to taste.) We can learn a lot from spending time in the forest; trees are some of the oldest living things on our planet. There are even a few trees such as the bristlecone pines, that live to be over 5000 years old. There is definitely something magical about the forest it is full of wisdom, resilience and secrets yet to be told.

You Go Girl The Last Few Rays of Sunshine by Katherine Kehoe
We hate to admit it, but summer is winding down. The kids (and teachers) are headed back to school, the leaves are going to start changing color, and the air is going to start getting colder. Even though this time of year has its perks, there’s very often a sort of depression that comes with waving goodbye to hot summer days in the pool and nights walking the boardwalk. I mean, some of us do like the cold weather, but there’s just an atmosphere that comes with summer that makes us feel alive. The winter is usually pretty dark and gloomy and we spend a lot of time stuck inside eating too many Girl Scout Cookies, so summer slipping away can definitely feel like mourning. But it’s not over yet! Here at the Jersey shore we have the benefit of that beautiful thing in September called Local Summer. The crowds have mostly gone home, and our boardwalks and beaches belong to us for this month. The sun is still out and keeping our corner of the world warm for a while longer - so let’s enjoy it while we can! Don’t make excuses about being too busy to get outside - I’m in grad school and I still sit out in the backyard doing my homework every weekend rather than stay cooped up inside! There are a TON of benefits to getting outside while we still have that sunshine. We all know the sun gives us that fabulous Vitamin D, which is great for our overall health and well-being. It’s easier to exercise outdoors, because going for a walk or a hike is far more entertaining than just humming along on the treadmill looking at the same old gym

It gives you a moment to just breathe - and we all know how important that can be for combatting stress, anxiety, and depression. The world is still out there. The grass and leaves are still green. A Tribute to 9/11 What it Means to be Free By Elizabeth Black
An essay called “Freedom”. Freedom (noun)-the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. Freedom (noun)- absence of subjection to foreign domination or despotic government. Freedom (noun)- the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved. This may be the dictionary definition of freedom, but to most of us, it has a deeper meaning. Equal opportunity, the ability to say and do what we please, and independence. Here in America, equality is written in our Declaration of Independence. It is one of four ideals expressed by the Committee of Five men who are responsible for writing and completing our declaration. Our great country is known for our belief in equal opportunity. We started with immigrants, who were willing to work hard when opportunity came knocking at their door. Today, we are the same way. According to CNN, 990,553 people were granted lawful permanent residence in the year 2013. In 2012, the Department of Homeland Security estimated that there are 4.11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. Whether their presence in the United States is legal or not, all immigrants have a common goal: to build a better life. They come here because they have been sold the American dream. They come here because they want a better life for their children, a better life where they will be able to succeed despite race, gender, or ethnical background. Although we are still working towards a country where all people are treated the same in society, we take new steps every day to perfect equality. Here in America, if there’s something the people don’t like, you can bet your bottom dollar that we can change it. We can and we will protest, argue, and debate until we are satisfied. We’ve done it before and we can do it again. This is because we have the freedom to say and do what we please. We can be independent and work hard enough to bring ourselves out of poverty and into a good life. We have freedom to live the life we want, and that is truly beautiful. The people we have to thank for this freedom are our veterans. The men and women who have served in all wars not only made us free, but keep us free. Almost all of us have someone close to us who have served. My brother Thomas was named after my Great Uncle Tommy who served in World War II. My mother’s grandfather was also a WWII vet, and so was my great grandfather on my dad’s side. My great uncle Jimmy Flood and his brother Jack were in WWII, and Jimmy survived a plane crash while he was in the air force. The list of veterans we have to thank is an endless one, as soldiers lose their lives and fight for our country every day. Having an equal opportunity and being able to do what I please without fear is what being free truly means to me.
We will never forget...

The Book Report “Fever Dream” by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child A book review by Brian Favretto
“It’s unbelievable how such a small oversight could lead to such enormous consequences.” Aloysius Pendergast is an effective yet quirky FBI Special Agent, but the novel has nothing to do with an FBI assignment. “Fever Dream” begins in the African savannah with Pendergast and his wife Helen on a guided hunting safari, when they are summoned by the camp commander to assist with tracking a legendary lion that has been devouring tourists. Foreshadowing is heavy in the opening chapters, so it’s not much of a spoiler to say that Helen doesn’t make it out of Africa. The very next chapter advances twelve years, and Pendergast is back at his family’s old estate in Louisiana, when he discovers a small oversight that will lead to enormous consequences. A line of reasoning leads him to the conclusion that Helen’s death was no accident. She was murdered. Pendergast realizes he is going to need some help solving a twelve year old murder case that happened on the other side of the globe, so he calls on his old friend and NYC Homicide Detective Vincent D’Agosta. Much to the chagrin of his girlfriend and boss Laura Hayward (who later becomes a major player in this story), D’Agosta agrees to put his life on hold at the drop of a hat in order to help his friend. Pendergast soon realizes that the person he was married to was leading a mysterious second life that evaded him. Helen was captivated with John James Audubon, the bird enthusiast and painter from the 1800’s. She was secretly on a nationwide scavenger hunt to track down his lost (and fictional) “Black Frame” painting. She believed this to be his first masterpiece, painted in a sanatorium as he was recovering from an illness. Her theory was that Audubon’s illness was the impetus of change that transformed him from a mediocre painter to a masterful artist. Was she researching a theory that wasmore valuable than her life? The story begins to take so many twists and turns that I wondered how Preston and Child could even keep track. There are near deaths, real deaths, and not-so-real deaths. There are people that pull the
triggers and others that call the shots. There are new characters entering and old characters exiting throughout the book. In the end, several questions are answered while just as many are not. Fever Dream is a unique book in that it is the tenth in a series with the main character Pendergast, but it is the first of a subplot trilogy. It is the first in the Pendergast series that I’ve read, and I feel that it is the type of series best read chronologically. I never got a feel for who Aloysius Pendergast really was, or what his role was as a Special Agent in the FBI. The murder of his wife is so deeply personal that I can forgive some unorthodox methods, but he has some downright strange and even silly investigative and evidence gathering techniques. At one point in the story, he drives his wife’s 1954 Porsche 550 Spyder to Picayune, Mississippi hoping to retrace her steps. He begins revving the car’s engine hoping to spark someone’s memory of his wife being there, in the same car, twelve years ago. Of course it works. There was also an odd appearance of a mysterious character named Constance Greene, who had no importance in the plot of this book, but seemed to have a role in other books of the series. Here she seemed like an afterthought, as though her character needed mentioning in order to maintain interest. I am most satisfied when I can grab a book and enjoy it, without having to know the back story, no matter where it falls in a series. Instead, this book made me feel like the new kid in school, dropped into the classroom mid-year. I wouldn’t say this makes it a “don’t read”. In fact, the open-for-interpretation ending and the Constance Greene cameo have me curious about the next two books in the Helen Pendergast murder trilogy: “Cold Vengeance” and “Two Graves”. I was also happy to learn something about a somewhat fictionally enhanced John James Audubon. If you’re up for the challenge of trying to solve the murder of Helen Pendergast (I failed), look for “Fever Dream” in the Point Pleasant Boro branch of the Ocean County Library. “Fever Dream”, Grand Central Publishing, 2010.

Rover Rescue
What is Passion? by Lauren Kehoe
kittens or friendly adult cats can be brought to shelters or rehomed, while feral cats who would prefer to live the rest of their lives in the wild are released.
For me, passions are things that make life worth living. Although dogs top my list, traveling comes in as a close second. In the past month, I was lucky to have had the opportunity to backpack throughout Europe. And as the universe would have it, during my travels I encountered many animals.
Now in an ideal world, there would be a home for every animal and none would ever go cold or hungry. Realistically this is not the situation in our society. In my opinion, TNR programs are a great thing. I would love to see more implicated in the United States, for cats as well as dogs. Animals used to living on the streets become skilled at finding
What stuck with me the most regarding dogs overseas was in Greece. My first night in Athens, awe were walking down the street and discovered a furry friend following us. The sixty-pound mutt was sporting a bright blue collar on and appeared to be happy and healthy. I asked a local where the dog’s owner was and he informed me it was a stray. The city had developed an influx of stray dogs over the years. In 2004, the summer Olympics were held in Athens and officials decided they needed to clean up the city. They thought that having thousands of stray dogs in Athens would be bad for their image. The city launched a two million dollar plan to collect ten thousand strays, spay or neuter them, give them tags, vaccinations, and rerelease them. The plan’s goal was to reduce the number of puppies born on the streets and lower the spread of diseases, gradually decreasing the stray population. The locals give strays food, water, and attention, so they have a fair quality of life. While some animal rights groups protested this as not being sufficient enough care for the strays, I think it’s a great move. The first step to decreasing overpopulation is through sterilization. The city of Athens could have chosen to collect and euthanize the animals, but they didn’t. Instead, they took a progressive step forward. Overtime it will move towards the target of eliminating strays while letting the dogs live out the rest of their lives in the environment they are comfortable in. Giving the dogs appropriate shots also helps reduce the spread of disease, another concern with stray animals.
food and shelter. As long as the public living in areas with TRN show kindness rather than disgust, I believe they could greatly reduce the number of animals euthanized in shelters each year. In the United States we have trap, neuter, and release (TNR) programs for cats. Volunteers and workers across the country help trap the cats, bring them to a vet to get sterilized and necessary, medical attention and re-release the animals back to where they came from. Young

The Muse Living Life Like a Rock Star by Charles Nolan
When Ian Gray was the drum major for Manasquan High School’s marching band during his senior year at the school, he would lead the rest of the crew through “The Horse” by Cliff Nobles and Co. after each win.
And yeah, he hopes people from the Manasquan area come see him play when he has big shows, like last month when he was at the Paramount Theater with Richard “La Bamba” Rosenberg and Mark Pender of Conan O’Brien’s various house bands playing that old familiar MHS football game staple, “The Horse.” And yeah, his next dream gig is a show on the Manasquan jetty that he hopes he can one day make happen, but he also just hopes people take advantage of what a great spot they are in musically:
Ian has come a long way from that day that Alan Abraham, the district’s music teacher, handed him the slide trombone and told him this was what he would be playing now that he was big enough to reach all the positions: in the past few years, Ian has played as a member of bands like The Billy Walton Band, Swift Technique, and Karmic Juggernaut, and on stage with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Darlene Love, and The Smithereens. But Ian didn’t always have his sights set on being the go-to trombone section for every Jersey Shore band. He credits plenty of people throughout Manasquan for his success, like the guys at Manasquan Engine #2 for teaching him respect for people who already do what you want to do, but part of it was when he went to visit the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where his twin sister Kaylyn had already been admitted. “I remember having no clue what I wanted to do,” Ian said. “I was thinking firefighting until a trip with Kaylyn to visit [UArts]. I almost didn’t audition but things just worked out that day, I got in front of a couple teachers.” Ian says that they accepted him as a late admission right after that audition. Since then, his success in his chosen, but almost-notchosen, field has only grown exponentially. He has toured the world, playing in front of 7,000 in Germany, as a member of The Billy Walton Band, a classic Jersey Shore sound band in the model of The Asbury Jukes, The E Street Band, and Holme. He has played on “We’re Having A Party” with Southside Johnny on the radio. He played as part of Darlene Love’s horn section during a Christmas concert, writing horn parts with Steve Van Zandt in preparation.
I love Manasquan, and I hope neighbors,
friends, and residents of the town start to
explore the truly remarkable music scenes we have just down the road from us.
Despite moving and mostly playing outside of Manasquan, Ian still holds his hometown in his heart, and would “love to see some familiar faces at the Stone Pony” during Swift Technique’s tribute show to the late Bernie Worrell on October 22. It can be tough to keep track of the many bands that Ian is in or that he plays with, but iangraymusic.com makes it easy. Check it out to see where he is playing on any given night.

Grow Your Own Spuds Done Simple by Steve De Jacimo
So, Fall is on its way. The crops must change. Gee, I sound like a Midwesterner, oh, it’s because I am. My wife gave me the nod to pull out the old cucumbers, peas, spaghetti squash, some other squash thing, gourds, peppers, and all that Summer only stuff in lieu of potatoes. Oh, and the Heirloom tomatoes get to stay alive a little longer. Yep, it’s potato time. Just leave them in the old potato basket a little too long and they grow those little sprouts……roots, really. Dig a 5-inch deep hole and bury them about a foot part. At the Jersey Shore, we have the luxury of having sandy soil, which drains well which is perfect for growing taters. Then, you want to mound the dirt up above each potato planting. Here’s why. The whole point of ‘mounding up’ potatoes is to promote as much growth of potatoes along the stem while also protecting the potatoes from

Beer Corner Dry-Hopped Goodness by Matt Connelly
Follow me on Untappd at MConnelly
Can’t Dry Hop?
When Kane Brewing Company (Ocean Township) opened in 2011, the tasting room featured a six faucet draft system despite the fact that founder and head brewer Michael Kane only had three beers in production. To round out his tap list, Kane double dry-hopped his two hop-forward beers. One of those early offerings – Double Dry Hopped Head High with Galaxy – was re-released this month at the brewery and the result was an amazingly flavorful and rich variant of one of my favorite local brews. Having had Kane’s Head High dozens of times, I was surprised how different the dry-hopped version looked, smelled and tasted. I immediately became curious about the practice of dry hopping and how this could transform an already exceptional beer.
To be honest, there are dry hopped beers available in the market that are much better than anything I could ever produce at home. If you’re not a brewer but would like to experience this deliciousness, head up to Kane Brewing Company ASAP to sample their “Galaxy Head High” before it kicks! If you’re reach is further than Ocean Township, and you want to try the absolute best of this style, do your best to get your hands on any or the dry- or doubledry-hopped variants from Trillium Brewing Company in Massachusetts. Is your car in the shop? Head over to Gerards in Point Pleasant and ask Matt what dry hopped beers they have on the shelves. You won’t be disappointed.
Why to Dry Hop
Dry hopping is a process in which hops are steeped in beer between fermentation and bottling. This late-addition hopping will add significantly to the hop aroma and flavor of the beer without adding to the beer’s bitterness. I won’t purport to understand the sophisticated science behind this, but a simplified explanation is that the amount of time hops are boiled during the brewing process is positively correlated to the bitterness of the final product. On the other hand, hops added to a beer after the boil and fermentation produce limited bitterness because the alpha acids are not isomerized. And, although my tastes and preferences are consistently changing, I am currently obsessed with juicy (i.e. not bitter) New England-style IPAs (see the August issue for more on this) that are produced in this manner.
How to Dry Hop
1. The most common method of dry hopping involves the addition of loose whole cone hops during secondary fermentation (i.e. conditioning). From my experience, the ideal amount of time to leave the hops in contact with your beer before is 2-3 days; there is little to be gained after 72 hours and the flavor can become grassy if your dry hops sit much longer than a week.
Matt Connelly is a 17-year educator currently serving as the Vice-Principal of Woodbridge High School in Woodbridge Township, NJ.
2. If pellet hops are more readily available they can also be added to the beer during secondary. I always contain these hops in a mesh bag because they will deteriorate into sludge during the process. 3. If you’re pressed for time and a secondary fermentation is not in your plans, simply add loose cone hops or contained pellet hops during primary fermentation. Results aren’t as dramatic and special care must be taken during bottling to avoid siphoning yeast or sludge into your hard work.
