My Back Pack Tried to Kill Me By Tony Garrow, D.C.

During my journey to become a Chiropractor, I went through 8 years of college education. Most of my classes were science classes with large, heavy books. I was also on the Montclair State swim team. On any given day you would have easily been able to find anywhere from 20 to 30lbs. of books and swim gear in my backpack. And I thought I was cool to wear my backpack on my right shoulder. Prior to college, I also carried my backpack around with me in high school. During those years I experienced a lot of headaches, right shoulder pain, and low back pain, but I just ignored the symptoms and did not fix the problem. Unfortunately, I did not realize what my heavy backpack was trying to do to me. Luckily, chiropractic saved me. When I began to learn about the negative effects of carrying heavy backpacks (especially on one shoulder), I decreased the weight of my bag and started care with a chiropractor to try to get my posture back as close to normal as possible. Now, I no longer have the chronic back and health problems that I once suffered from.

Here’s how we can help this problem:

What is the actual problem with backpacks these days? The books are getting bigger, the kids are loading them with unnecessary items, and it is still cool to have a backpack hanging over one shoulder. Many kids are carrying almost 30 lbs. of books and materials in their bags. This can have a serious effect on their posture, spine, and health. One article from a journal called Spine, said that more than 50% of kids will experience low back pain by the end of their teen years. Much of this low back pain may be caused by the backpack problem. Using backpacks improperly over time may contribute to chronic problems later in life. Another Spine article showed that heavy backpacks alter the discs between the bones in the spine which may set the kids up for osteoarthritis and disc problems later in life. I have noticed that women who have carried purses on one shoulder for years tend to have chronic posture and spinal health problems. This situation may be worse for kids. Children under 18 may still be in the growing stage. Their bones and body structure are not fully developed. Wearing a big bag over one shoulder may cause children to grow into an unwanted chronic posture. One old saying goes “as the twig is bent, so grows the tree”.

• Do not put backpacks on only one shoulder; use both straps.

• Decrease any unnecessary weight in the bags (toys, games, lunch boxes).

Dr. Tony Garrow & Dr. Susan Nemiroff

• The backpacks should be less than 10-15% of the child’s weight. • Make sure the bags are not changing their normal posture.

• Talk to the teachers about decreasing the amount of homework requiring large books.

• Encourage schools to allow more time to exchange books between classes.

• Support schools in their challenge to get publishers to lighten the books.

• Some schools are buying two sets of the heavier books (one for home, one for school). • Stagger exams more and photocopy assignments.

• Put the straps on snug, but not too tight; and straps around the waist may help. • Lift backpacks without twisting when putting them on and lift with your knees. • Bags on wheels might not be a good alternative, because they still stress your posture.

• Encourage regular stretching and exercises to strengthen the back and neck.

• Involve your local chiropractor in the solution to this problem.

Finding a chiropractor that specializes in posture and children can be a huge asset to this problem. I see a lot of kids who have serious posture problems and spinal misalignments due to backpack stress. In addition, I have spoke to many mom’s groups, school officials, and PTA members about this issue. Many chiropractors and I would be willing to donate our time to speak to different groups and help them develop solutions to this problem. We also can check the kids posture with and without the backpacks on to see if the backpacks have affected their posture. It will take a great combined effort from the schools, doctors, parents, teachers, and parents to fight back against backpacks.

Is it Time to Buy?

By Steven & Michelle Schneider, The SCHNEIDER TEAM at Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate

realize the full amount of the appreciation. You are essentially controlling a much larger investment and, therefore, are in a position to gain a higher return. For example, if you invest $50,000 in stock and that stock appreciates by 10%, you earn $5,000. However, if you invest $50,000 as a 10% down payment on a $500,000 home and that home appreciates by 10%, you earn $50,000. That’s leveraging!

It is true that buying a home is a major milestone, and likely to be one of the most significant investments in a person’s lifetime. However, many people derive a great deal of satisfaction from owning their homes. The Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) at Harvard University performs an annual study to ascertain the most important motives behind the drive for homeownership. Below are the top 5 reasons, and the top 4 are not financial in nature:

Whether you are a first-time home buyer, or a current homeowner looking to trade up, now may be the time to make your move! Home prices have risen in recent years and experts say that values will continue to appreciate for the foreseeable future. At the same time, interest rates are at near all-time lows, with speculation of future increases.

1. It means having a good place to raise children and provide them with a good education. 2. You have a physical structure where you and your family feel safe. 3. It allows you to have more space for your family.

Many lenders currently have a variety of programs to create mortgage scenarios that help homebuyers take the next step. You don’t need 20% down to buy a home. Of course, you will pay private mortgage insurance if you make a lower down payment, but the PMI rates are very affordable. Waiting to save a larger down payment may cost you more in the long run. Sure, you may have additional funds to put down in the future, but the increase in home prices and a rise in interest rates are likely to offset those savings.

4. It gives you control over what you do with your living space, like renovations and updates. 5. Owning a home is a good way to build up wealth that can be passed along to my family. We can all appreciate the social and emotional reasons for wanting to own a home. But for now, let’s focus on #5 - “a good way to build up wealth.” Maybe you can think about it this way. If you buy a home, your monthly payments go toward paying down your own debt, while you gain equity in your own home. If you rent a home, your monthly payments go toward paying down the landlord’s debt, while the landlord gains equity in the landlord’s home. Either way you are paying down a mortgage. Plus, if you’re a renter, you’re probably paying a little extra to provide the landlord a return on investment.

Certainly, there are other factors to consider in deciding to buy a home, such as your current financial situation, your job security, the equity in your current home, alternative investment opportunities, whether or not you are planning to stay in one place, etc. But with those things in check, maybe it is time to buy. In the real estate market, timing is everything! Home prices and borrowing rates are two of the major components in determining the true cost of a home. Both appear to be on the rise. Buying sooner rather than later could lead to substantial savings.

There are many financial benefits to homeownership. One is being able to protect yourself from rising rents by locking in your housing costs. When you buy a home with a fixed 30-year mortgage, your monthly payments remain relatively stable, usually only varying slightly for changes in the real estate tax rates. However, if you rent, your monthly payments are likely to increase on a regular basis, in many cases higher than the rate of inflation.

Many potential homebuyers think that they need a large down payment, and that notion may be holding them back from owning their dream home. If you are renting and think you can’t afford buy, you may be surprised at how easily you can move from a renter to a homeowner. In fact, buying may cost less than renting! So, what are you waiting for?

When you buy a home, a large portion of your monthly payments ― the interest and real estate taxes ― are tax-deductible. If you rent, your monthly payments are not tax deductible. At the same time, some consider monthly mortgage payments as a type of “forced savings” that help pay down the principal on the mortgage, and, thereby, create equity that will be available in the future. Renters yield that benefit.

Buying a home is a leveraged investment. What is a leveraged investment? It is one where you only invest a percentage of the actual value, but still

Dare I Say the “S” Word? by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc, CRMT

As a Mother of two children of middle school age, August brings about feelings of melancholy to not let the summer end but also anticipation for another grade higher. Mid-summer has us all in full swing of family time, fireworks, bike rides, night swims, pool parties, and BBQ’s. Lengthy daylight allows for so much more fun to take place and friendships grow to last a lifetime. Prepping for back to school goes beyond supplies and new backpacks. Getting ready for school is a physical shift as well as a mental one for the entire house and especially the child. Anxieties may start to erupt just thinking about who will sit near them at the lunch table or whether or not they will be able to get their lockers open on time. Tweens and teenagers especially are faced with greater stressors while little ones may express separation anxiety in anticipation of the first day of kindergarten. Anxiety can be anxiety no matter the age. These anxieties may also erupt in various forms from outburst to introvert. How to help your child(ren) prep themselves for this new school year can be done in simple ways. Some changes are so simple that we tend to overlook them or brush them off as so easy that they couldn’t possibly make a difference. As a parent I will say these little changes worked for us. As an ND other changes worked for various clients and their families. There should be no judgement as nothing in this life is a one size fits all on any approach whether it’s a tactic or a health approach. We are all different and feel differently about different situations. Children today feel a lack of control over their own lives and are under constant direction from an adult or elder on what they should be doing, saying, and acting. This can weigh on a child after a while and that loss of control can make them feel powerless. Here are just a few approaches you can try. Kindergarten age- The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. This book has a heart-warming story of the separation anxiety of a little raccoon from his Mom who is just starting school. The book comes with little heart stickers to place in the palm of your little one’s hand before school begins every day. Soon my little ones didn’t need the sticker anymore and just needed a kiss on their hand to know that I always come back for them. First grade to 5th grade- allow your child to help you pick out their clothes for the week or their lunch menu for the week. Allow some of the power to shift to them. Ask your child non-open ended questions. Ask questions that they have to answer without a Yes or No answer. 6th grade- See if you can discuss with the school principal to take your child to the school before it begins to practice on the locker combination. Discuss with your child that if they are not assigned to a lunch table with their friends that

August 2016

perhaps they should come up with some questions to ask the new kids at their table. This can help to break any uncomfortable silence between the children upon meeting. Discuss with your child that this may be a nice break from some of their ‘regular’ friends to make new ones or see different perspectives from others. By discussing with your child to allow negative talk or gossip from others to not ‘get to them’ can be difficult but is critical to their happiness. It’s hard to make fun of someone who truly doesn’t feed into the reaction of it. As adults we may still face this in society so relating to your child here could be life changing for them. 7th and 8th grade- The workload for children of this age is heavy. Discuss with your child if they still want to play those sports or be involved in that club. Their time is precious at this age and if their hearts aren’t into the sport or activities, stress erupts and too many after school activities can weigh on the child’s mind and possibly impact their personality. High School- Peer pressure, college scouting and testing can overwhelm anyone let alone a teenager who needs to make life long decisions. Constant talking with your child is key. Offer to allow certain freedoms in exchange for their trust. Show your faults as parents during times of miscommunication or misunderstandings as this is such a great learning for your children to see that you are just as human as they are. I’m sorry and I love you can go a long way.

No matter the age or the grade, we have always noticed that constant hugs with your child and telling them you love them has always worked. It can put an end to just about any spat or uneasiness. Even when our children want to be combative we always ask for a hug and tell them we love them no matter what. We don’t have to like their behavior but we will always love them. Happy summer, happy new school year, and happy home.

Can You Teach an Old Dog New Tricks? by Lauren Kehoe

Just like you have life insurance policies to decrease the burden for your family, having a plan for your dog will keep him or her out of shelters.

Shelters across the country are flooded with elderly dogs everyday. Faces white with age, they stare through the chain link and wonder where they are. Despite often having a more calm demeanor and being already trained, older dogs often get overlooked for their youthful neighbors. But why do so many older dogs end up in shelters in the first place?

Sometimes people adopt a puppy, expecting a cute little bundle of fluff for the rest of its life. As the puppy, grows older, they may lose interest. The puppy breath disappears and its baby face matures. The dog may have grown to a size larger than they expected, or grown into its personality different than when they first got the puppy. This is one reason some shelters have strict adoption process. It’s good practice to thoroughly question the adopter to ensure they are ready to make a ten to fifteen year commitment on the puppy or dog, depending on its age.

Older dogs are great companions, yet sometimes are surrendered due to reasons beyond their control. One reason is due to medical issues. Just like people, some dogs begin to develop medical conditions with age. Not many people have health insurance for their dogs, and some conditions rack up a bill that is unmanageable for their human family. Medications, surgery, and treatment add up. Some conditions may require an increased amount of supervision. Giving up your furry best friend because of health conditions may seem ludicrous to some, but it happens often. It can be an extremely taxing situation emotionally and financially. Every dog is an individual, as is every case and medical condition.

While adopting is a great thing, any relationships will have hardships over the years. Preparing adopters or yourself for the lifetime of a dog is important before you sign those papers. Old dogs have just as much love to give, and there is a dog out there for everyone. Next time you enter a shelter, check your lifestyle and see if you can open your home to an elderly dog. It may be one of the best decisions you make.

Another reason older dogs end up in shelters is that they outlive their owners. Older people will often adopt a dog and later suffer a health condition of their own, putting them in a nursing home or causing them to pass away. The family of the deceased may wish the dog well, but not have the time or resources to take on the commitment. Whenever possible, it is important to create a plan for your dog if something were to happen to you. Accidents happen at any age.

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

Sea Glass...the Ocean’s Jewels by Natalie Berko

Cobalt Blue, nicknamed the “sapphire” of the sea, came from apothecary items such as Milk of Magnesia, Vick’s Vapor Rub, Noxzema, Nivea, and Bromo Seltzer bottles, along with some prescription bottles and perfumes. Extremely rare red pieces might come from perfume bottles, tail lights of old automobiles, lantern and traffic light lenses, and even some types of old beer bottles, like Anchor Hocking for Schlitz Beer in the 1950’s. Pinks, lavenders, purples, lime greens and other rare shades came from things like perfume bottles and art glass. Many of these pieces came from what was originally clear glass that was clarified with magnesium (lavender) or selenium (pink). Over time the sun causes the selenium and magnesium to oxidize creating the lavender and pink hues. Greens, browns, and aquas come from soda bottles and beer bottles, and include almost every other source such as house hold cleaners, cosmetics, shampoos, etc. Sometimes in old town dumps sea glass is also passed through fires becoming “Fire Glass”, the rarest of all sea glass. Sea glass is like precious gems, both rare and beautiful and to hold a piece is to hold a piece of history in your palm.

Sea glass and beach glass although to the untrained eye appear similar are very different. Sea glass refers to salt water glass and beach glass refers to that found in fresh water. The difference is in the process, glass slowly dissolves in salt water, which gives the sea glass its satin-like patina, while it does not dissolve in fresh water. In the old days it was nicknamed “Mermaid Tears”. The legend was that every time a sailor drowned at sea, the Mermaids would cry and the sea glass was their tears washing ashore. Glass shards can take decades or even centuries to form into smooth, luminous artifacts. The pieces of glass are persistently tumbled and ground until the sharp edges become smooth and round. In this process the glass loses its slick surface but gains a frosted appearance over many years. These glass shards originated as pieces from broken bottles, table wear, and even shipwrecks. Sea glass is found everywhere and its value is determined by its color. Red, blue, lavender, purple or pink glass are amongst some of the rarest finds, since few containers were made of these colors. For example, very rare

Own It!

by Katherine Kehoe

A few weekends ago, my boyfriend and I went to a cookout that some of our friends were hosting. These friends are total foodies, so everything that they had to eat was really unusual and next-level interesting. Instead of just making homemade guacamole, for example, they made it with chipotle sauce and bacon so it was spicy and smoky and just to die for. Instead of grilling regular chicken wings, they had Indian-spiced wings with a homemade yogurt sauce. And for dessert, there was not just a cheesecake, but a lime-ginger cheesecake. You get the idea! Needless to say, I ate a lot. And as we drove home, after having more or less rolled to the car, I groaned about how ‘bad’ I had behaved by eating so much junk food. The next day, when I tried to squeeze into my jeans for work, I felt even worse. I spent the entire day berating myself for having let myself down and feeling guilty for what I had done.

comes from feeling like we’ve failed. It’s a gross feeling that slides all over your insides like black slime. And it’s time to shake it out. Next time you start to feel the guilt creeping under your skin, stop and take a moment. Ask yourself why you feel like this. What do you feel like you ‘should’ be doing? And what do you actually want to do? If you want that piece of cheesecake, then it’s not ‘bad’ to have it. It’s your choice. There might be consequences or repercussions of a specific action, but they are only as ‘bad’ or ‘good’ as they make you feel. You’re strong, you’re smart, and you’re capable of choosing what you want to do. If you make a conscious decision, then own it! So maybe I spent a day feeling kind of crappy after eating that cheesecake – but wow, was it delicious!

Sound familiar to anyone?

The thing is, this doesn’t just happen with food. When my mom calls me to ask me if we can get together, I feel guilty because I feel like I should be making time for her. When I have to cancel plans with my friends, I feel guilty because I feel like I should stick to my word and I’m letting them down by bailing. Just like when I have that piece of cheesecake, I feel guilty because I feel like I should be eating ‘better’. See the pattern? All of that guilt stems from feeling like I ‘should’ be doing something. And I see this in so many other women. We have so many expectations that we place on ourselves (or that others place on us) to do everything, to be everywhere, to please everyone, and when we can’t do it all (inevitably), we feel that guilt and shame that

Mending Our Roots By Maureen Whelan

It turns out there is no lifeguard at the “gene pool”. But what if you could go back in time and change your past. If your child inherited, Gran’s worrying habits, Granpa’s short temper, or Aunt Meg’s extreme silliness in times of stress, then at least knowing your past may help you. Behavioral epigenetics is a fairly new field that has recently proven the past experiences of our ancestors can alter our genetic makeup on a molecular level.** This discovery indicates we are more likely to mimic the behaviors of our parents as the DNA is handed down by both the father and the mother. So, Freud lovers, you can no longer blame bad mothering for all your faults. As with most things, there are both positive and negative outcomes to this. If your ancestors were exposed to the stressors of famine and poverty, but responded to these stressors by rationing and becoming more resourceful, then you may have an explanation for habits such as future planning, creativity and calm in the face of a storm. However, if your ancestors responded to these same circumstances with anxiety, bitterness or food insecurity, chances are your responses to similar triggers will be negative as well, even if the trigger is a brief hunger pang between meals. By understanding the experiences of our ancestors, we can gain information about our own behavior. If we wish to change what we pass along to our children, we need to change how we behave in response to our environment. Thus, Nurture molds Nature. This research also indicated that environmental factors such as chemical exposure will also alter our DNA. The chemical bisphenol A, commonly called BPA was used in many plastics until public outcry several years ago. When animals were exposed to this chemical, they not only demonstrated increased anxiety, problems with learning, memory, and socialization, but their offspring did too. Specifically, the mothers exposed to this decreased the social contact with their offspring, which in turn Worry imprinted higher levels of stress responses on their own DNA.

Calm So what does all this highly scientific yet somewhat difficult to understand research mean to us? Most importantly, we, as parents, need to clean up our act. If we want to ensure the best possible outcomes for our children and even our grandchildren, we need to take care of ourselves, and Bitter the earlier we realize this the better. Nearly every aspect of our environment will Anger alter the genetic material we pass along. So we need to eat right, as both the nutrients and habits are likely to show up in the future. Take care of our physical environment, it’s the tub your body bathes in. Eliminate potential toxins and exposure to Nurture chemicals, preservatives, drugs, and alcohol. Nurture emotional health by managing and reducing stress. Stress responses and chemicals are one of the most critical factors that impact our DNA, and the wellbeing of our future generations. Most of all, engage in healthy behaviors, as these behavioral responses will also be handed down. Right now we may be a lowly branch on the family tree, but one day we may be the trunk that supports many. Nourish the healthy and prune what is not.

We can’t any longer have the conventional understanding of genetics, which everybody peddles, because it is increasingly obvious that epigenetics, actually things which influence the genome’s function, are much more important than we realised — Robert Winston ** “Behavioral Epigenetics: How Nurture Shapes Nature” Oxford Journals (Bioscience, Vol. 61, issue 8) and Behavioral Epigenetics (abstract), US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, (Sept. 2013)

Cloudy with a Chance of Brilliance by Matt Connelly

India Pale Ale continues to be the style most preferred by craft beer drinkers; the flavor-forward niche has accounted for 1 of every 4 craft beers purchased since 2014. The Brewer’s Association, which officially defines and judges beer, recognizes three official categories of IPA: English-style, American-style, and Imperial (double). In reality, the spectrum of IPA sub-categories goes well beyond these three. If you’ve perused the shelves of Gerard’s or Spirits Unlimited you’ve undoubtedly seen IPAs designated as “Belgian,” “Session,” “Black,” or “Rye,” to name a few.

Since bitterness and clarity are hallmarks of a traditional IPA, this new take on the style has been met with just as much criticism as praise. Purists note that, in the past, if a beer was hazy it could mean that there was a mistake made in the brewing process. To that point, many breweries have spent big money to find ways to reduce haze through filtering, yeast selection and brewing practice. Andy Sparhawk of The Brewers Association, in an article titled “Beer Haze: Clarity in a Topsy Turbid World,” cautioned consumers to understand why their beer is cloudy before deciding it is necessarily a good thing. If the cloudiness is simply caused by yeast in suspension, or the brewer just kegged their beer before fermentation was complete, the quality and efficacy of the brew may be compromised.

Until recently, West Coast IPAs were the subcategory that received the most attention in my circles. Characterized by pine and citrus flavors associated with the hop world’s “Four Cs” – Cascade, Centennial, Columbus and Chinook – this style produces a dank and resinous aroma coupled with a clean and dry mouthfeel. Breweries such as Russian River, Green Flash, Stone and Ballast Point grew their California-based operations exponentially on the backs of this outrageously bitter brew over the past decade.

So how do breweries like Tree House achieve that New England IPA juiciness and haziness the “right” way? Chances are they do some or all of the following: • Brew with wheat or oats, which are rick in haze-producing proteins. • Use English ale yeast as it doesn’t flocculate as well as American ale yeast and is therefore more likely to remain suspended in the liquid.

There is a new sub-category of IPA, though, that has overwhelmed the craft beer world in the past year. The “New England IPA” – named as such due to its origin in the tanks of Vermont’s Alchemist and Hill Farmstead breweries – couldn’t smell, taste or even look more different than its West Coast counterpart. New England IPAs have a characteristically fruity and juicy hop aroma and flavor coupled with a smooth, sometimes creamy mouthfeel. There is a subtle, balanced bitterness and, most typically, a cloudy appearance. Although I’d sampled beers like Heady Topper (Alchemist) and Edward (Hill Farmstead) over the years, upstarts like New England’s Trillium, Tree House and Bissell Brothers, along with Other Half (New York) and Tired Hands (Pennsylvania), have taken the New England IPA to a level that potentially deserves its own official categorization.

• Add few hops early in the boil, minimizing the isomerization of alpha acids that produces bitterness. Instead, add copious amounts of hops late in the boil, post boil, or during/after fermentation (i.e. dry-hopping). Is there any downside to this hot new trend in brewing? EXTREMELY limited distribution. If you cannot get to the breweries mentioned above on a can release date, than you are likely out of luck. So fill up your tank and, just this once, leave Point Pleasant. You’ll be glad you did!

I’ve come to LOVE this style for several reasons:

Matt Connelly is a 17-year educator currently serving as the Vice-Principal of Woodbridge High School in Woodbridge Township, NJ.

1. Smell – tropical and fruity. Brewers of this style are using hops such as Citra, Galaxy, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin instead of the piney and floral hops mentioned above. 2. Taste – juicy and subtle to non-existent bitterness compared to the high-IBU West-Coast style (e.g. Other Half/Veil Brewing’s Topical Depression, which has 0 IBU).

Follow Matt on Untapped at MConnelly

3. Feel – thicker, chewier mouthfeel compared to the bone-dry West Coast-style (e.g. Tired Hands’ Milkshake IPA).

4. Appearance – cloudy and opaque compared to the absolute clarity of West Coast-style (e.g. see inset of Trillium’s DDH Congress Street IPA).

“The Chase” by Clive Cussler A book review by Brian Favretto

Many things in life are not always as they seem. Often, we have to look at things from a different perspective, or maybe dig a little more deeply. This is very much the case in Clive Cussler’s novel “The Chase”. The story takes place in 1906, but the prologue jumps ahead to 1950, as a steam locomotive is being lifted from the bottom of Flathead Lake, Montana. Inside is a most interesting discovery, and now we have the rest of the novel to learn how it got there. Chapter One brings us back to 1906 and we witness a bank robbery in which several people are murdered, soon to learn that this is a serial bank robber, who kills witnesses as readily as we would swat a fly. The “Butcher Bandit” has been targeting the western state’s banks for some time, already having killed 38 innocent men, women and children. He continually baffles local law enforcement because he leaves behind no evidence, and manages to escape unnoticed. The U.S. government has to react, and they hire the VanDorn Detective Agency to try to fill in some gaps. Leading the charge is Isaac Bell, the agency’s best detective, having solved nearly all his cases from coast to coast. Bell jumps right in, scratching away at old leads, digging a little more deeply, and finding clues where nobody thought to look. The reader is treated to the identity of the Butcher Bandit long before Isaac Bell can pin him down. A man named Jacob Cromwell is well known in the social circles of San Francisco. He is a philanthropist that gives small fortunes to local charities and good causes, and he rubs shoulders with the most prominent politicians in the west. He is the founder of Cromwell Bank, the second wealthiest bank in the west. He is also the Butcher Bandit. He is a rich man, but he is intoxicated by the challenge of getting away with his crimes, and continues to steal in order to fatten the vault at Cromwell Bank. Little by little, puzzle pieces begin to emerge, and as he puts them together, Bell takes off after Cromwell. A tantalizing game of cat and mouse begins, as Bell hopes to catch Cromwell in the act. We are treated to two monumental chases, as well as a scene where Bell fights for his life. The historic 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fires may derail the investigation, and we begin to wonder if good can prevail, or if it even matters in the wake of a natural disaster. Rest assured, it matters to Isaac Bell. In “The Chase”, Cussler entwines his usual penchant for technology throughout the story. I gladly found myself “Google” searching things like “Mercedes Simplex”, “Locomobile”, “Kodak quick focus box camera” (a surveillance pioneer), as well as the “San Francisco Ferry Building”, which became the second busiest transit terminal in the world. I was apprehensive when the prologue gave insight to the ending, but Cusslerdoesn’t make it that simple. The ending contains enough twists and excitement, not to mention the desire to tie up loose ends, that the pages turn themselves. Why did it take 44 years to bring that steam locomotive to the light of day? The initial search expedition searched just below the surface. It took a renewed effort to look from a different perspective and dig a little deeper. “The Chase” begins a series of Isaac Bell novels. We don’t learn everything about him in this opener, but we learn that he enjoys the “challenge of matching wits with the criminal mind”, and he certainly enjoys the chase, which will have me reading more from the Isaac Bell series. If you can chase this book down at the Manasquan or Brielle Public Library, it is certainly worth reading. “The Chase”, Berkley Publishing Group, 2007.

Herb Gardening by Steve De Jacimo

After gardening for many years, let’s say, many, yeah, that’s enough. I have learned that every season is different. So far this year on the Jersey Shore, we have had ample sun and ample rain. This has been some of the best growing days I’ve seen in many years. Couple that with sandy soil, you have the perfect combination for herb gardening. Usually you get those short droughts or long rainy periods where you know as a gardener that you have to figure out how to make things work after the pendulum swings heavy one way or the other. For instance, how long do you wait after two or three days of steady rain before you water again? A day, two? More water is not good for herbs. So, check the soil about two inches down around the plant…if it’s dry to touch, then water. If not, leave it. Too much water can stunt the growth of herbs. These variables are what make people not want to do herb gardens, ever again. You have to check these plants often.

ES

This year, like many years past, I took on my typical herb garden, mostly because a lot of them are perennials, so they come back every year. It is the gift that keeps on giving. Just a little clean out, move some leaves away, loosen the soil, throw some compost around those babies and let the sun shine in ( (the experts recommend 4 hours of full sun per day) and you’re are back in the game for another season. I grow chives, mint, rosemary, parsley and sage. On the annual side of things, I go with basil and cilantro. Not sure what ate my basil, my wife says it’s caterpillars, but a little organic bug spray gets rid of those bugs. Stay on the bug spray for about two weeks periodically through each week and then the plants will flourish. Basil is a tropical plant, so it thrives here in August.

Lastly, here are some simple tips for harvesting herbs. After a plant like basil reaches 6”-8” tall you can snip branches off at the leaf intersection. This makes the plant regrow much quicker. Ground level plants like parsley grow new leaves from their center. With parsley, cut the oldest branches leaving the new tiny branches in the center. You will see how this happens naturally over the growing period.

Now, go “Grow your own!”

What’s Bugging You? We have a compost bin at our house. We use the black spinning plastic bin. We throw in everything earthy. After cutting veggies and fruits for salads, throw that in the compost. Add some grass clippings, a few dead plant leaves, add a bit of water every now and then. That mix will breakdown in a natural process where organic materials decompose and are recycled into a dark, crumbly, earthy smelling soil conditioner known as “compost”. If you then plant new plants or have a garden area that needs some better soil or fertilizer, use the compost. Compost improves soil structure and moisture retention, and contributes to healthy plant growth by providing plant nutrients. Contact us today for a free estimate! Frequent readers of 08742 have probably figured out by now that I’m a huge fan of salads. But for good reason, they are versatile, easy to make, light, and healthy. I love this one because it gets better the second day, and it doesn’t have a lot of mayo or oil. I’ve also experimented with using a wild rice mix for anyone who wants a Glutenfree version, or just prefers rice to pasta. Use the same proportions of your favorite brand, and decrease the salt to taste. Hint...Don’t refrigerate your limes and roll them with moderate pressure on your countertop prior to juicing for easy extraction of the juice.

Watermelon can be found year round but nothing quite compares to the sweet juicy melons that are only found during the summer season. However, sometimes their daunting sizes are intimidating. So, what do you do with all the melon after you’ve cut it? Here are a few of my favorites!

Watermelon Salad ripe watermelon, cut into small pieces balsamic vinegar glaze fresh mint feta cheese crumbles salt and pepper

Orzo Salad Makes 12-14 servings

1 lb orzo pasta cooked al dente or under cooked by 1 minute Juice of 2 limes Craisins dried cranberries 2 stalks of celery finely chopped 1 medium red onion finely chopped 3 carrots peeled and finely chopped 2 cups frozen peas rinsed

Arrange watermelon on a plate and drizzle with Balsamic vinegar, Sprinkle with mint feta crumbles and salt to taste.

Watermelon Cooler

Cook your pasta and drain. Rinse immediately with cold water to stop the cooking process. Drain again and place in a large bowl. Drizzle with a few tablespoons of olive oil and mix to prevent sticking. Add remaining ingredients and toss again with the dressing until it is evenly distributed. Chill 3-4 hours before serving.

5 cups cubed cold melon 1 cup ice cubes 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 cup seltzer 6-8 ounces of rum (adults only!)

Dressing: 3 TBSP honey ½ cup olive oil 2 ½ tsp. table blend Mrs. Dash 1 ½ tsp. sea salt black pepper ½ tsp. garlic powder

Place all ingredients in a blender except seltzer. Blend until ice is finely crushed, then add seltzer. Pour into glasses and and lime for garnish. Cheers! **To make a kid friendly version of this omit the rum and replace the seltzer with ginger ale.

The Power of Music by Charles Nolan

“Stupidity just runs the world, because entertainment is stupid. Do you guys realize that?”

As a creator of entertainment, he may not realize the impact that said entertainment has on the people who consume it, the very same people who are much more affected by the goings-on of the 2016 election cycle than someone who has been a rock star for over ten years.

When Josh Tillman took the stage at Xponential, a member-supported music festival put on by radio station XPN in Camden last month, as Father John Misty, the stage name for his indie-folk project under which he’s released two studio albums, he refused a guitar and instead began berating the crowd of thousands. In the middle somewhere, he said the above quote, verbatim save for a few choice expletives.

I may not be able to speak to the thousands of people at XPN, but music is important to me. It gives me distractions, inspirations, and connections. Every one of the major friendships and relationships in my life I can trace back to a specific song, album, artist or performance. Father John Misty played a ten-minute improvised and a Leonard Cohen cover, “Bird on a Wire,” before leaving the stage a half-hour early during his set at XPN.

Within sight of the Democratic National Convention’s host city of Philadelphia and the Battleship New Jersey resting in the Delaware River, Tillman told festival-goers, myself included, that we didn’t deserve entertainment due to the existence of Donald Trump, our “hilarious dictator,” as he dubbed the presidential candidate.

Luckily, after that half-hour of dead air ended and the next act came on, the people of New Jersey were provided with a different perspective, one that is almost assuredly more invested and affected by the political landscape than the 35-year-old white singer who preceded it. Kam Franklin, a 29-year-old black woman from Texas and the lead singer of the excellent soul group The Suffers, said:

We weren’t sad enough, he said. We weren’t angry enough, he said. We don’t deserve to listen to his music, he said. What Tillman failed to mention was that the thousands of people in attendance don’t work a job that allows them the luxury of sitting around all day thinking about Donald Trump. In fact, most people there, the people of Camden, of Philadelphia, and of the surrounding areas, work hard all week just to try and save some money to enjoy themselves on the weekend and try to forget about what’s going on in the world with a little music and entertainment.
