Paint Tip of the Month
When painting an older piece of furniture, sometimes the tannins cause a bleed through of color. It’s always good to have some clear shellac on hand for these moments. We like Zinsser Clear Shellac it seals the area and allows you to paint over with no sign of bleed. At Magnolia Lane Design we often shellac a mahogany piece before even starting to paint. Use two thin coats to seal a really tough stain.

All Business The Big Mistake – Failure to Leverage I` *OYPZ[` :JOTPK[ ,ZX
Entrepreneurship is perhaps the most exciting and satisfying adventure for the modern human who does not have the time or resources to scale Mount Everest!

Recently, I resolved a federal tax liability for a business client who PZ HYN\HIS` [OL ILZ[ H[ ^OH[ OL KVLZ -VY `LHYZ OL OHZ ¸JVUÄKLU[S`¹ OHUKSLK OPZ V^U SLNHS HUK ÄUHUJPHS HɈHPYZ ¶ HUK OPZ SHJR VM knowledge did not permit him to predict the $500,000 tax liability lurking around the corner. After restructuring his business and negotiating with the IRS, he is in the position to reduce his future liability…but the damage was done.
Typically, an entrepreneur takes his or her skills and experience and launches a business: The real estate agent turned broker-owner, for example. Otherwise, an entrepreneur just sort of falls into his or her own business: A friend hires them to cater a bridal shower; a client from a past job requests a press release; a family member needs a website…The recognition of talent becomes a dream: Perhaps I can do this as my own business? Of course, to be an entrepreneur one needs a certain level of self-esteem and a belief in one’s own power. Often, this includes a denial of weakness or the holding of an “I can do it all” attitude. Unless you plan on becoming an expert in every area of business while running your own, you can be sure you will have constant distraction and “emergencies” drawing you away from actually operating your business and doing what you do best.
In 1937, Napoleon Hill, after interviewing and studying successful business magnates, authored his masterpiece Think and Grow Rich (which I highly recommend). One element he discovered in each of the millionaires he studied was the ability to leverage. These successful entrepreneurs each recognized his or her need for sound, expert advice and were able to leverage their time and money by utilizing others’ genius and talents.

In this example, the entrepreneur can choose to use his or her time to learn each of these areas - attending school or studying. Of course, that time would be spent best doing what he or she does best: Selling real estate. An example I see with many of my clients: Designing a website. A basic website can take a neophyte days to complete…and those sites never work correctly, do not have impact (SEO), do not represent the brand, are not mobile-friendly….All the things a website expert addresses in his or her sleep! In those days spent “proudly” designing your own website, how much could you have earned doing what you do best? The website expert, for a few thousand dollars, can increase your sales and exposure and negate the cost completely! (Never mind protect against the lost revenue due to a poorly designed website that deters customers!) Whether you have been in business for thirty years or you are about to start a business, you should examine your areas of expertise to discover where you are lacking. The experiment recently attempted - to impressive results - by a group of eighth grade students from Memorial Middle School, students enrolled in the school’s Academically Talented (AT) Science classes.
On April 24, 37 eighth graders enrolled in Ms. Marinaro and Mr. Hynes’ Academically Talented (AT) Science classes took a trip to Great Adventure to attend the amusement park’s annual Physics Day celebration and to participate in the 2015 Egg Drop of Doom experiment.

“The Egg Drop of Doom puts an extreme twist on the Egg Drop experiment, dropping the eggs 230 feet from the top of the park’s parachute ride,” she said.
And once the students had the concepts down, Ms. Marinaro and her fellow AT Science Teacher Kevin Hynes, assigned the Egg Drop experiment.
On Physics Day, Great Adventure is transformed into an exciting hands-on, outdoor classroom allowing students in attendance to experience a thrilling physics, math and science adventure. It’s one of the park’s Exclusive Education Days, days where the park is open only for education groups.
“The Egg Drop experiment perfectly illustrates the law of inertia, the principles of air resistance and the rules of velocity and potential energy,” she said.

“After the Egg Drop, the students were given a sheet with a number of physics-related questions and they had to collect and analyze physical data to answer the questions based on their observations,” Ms. Marinaro said. “Some of the questions the students had to answer included determining the greatest points of potential and kinetic energy on roller coasters Kingda Ka and Batman; testing advertised ride times versus actual ride times and explain any discrepancies; and observing rides’ height restrictions and explain why the restrictions exist among others.”
From suspension systems, to inventive and diverse shock absorbers, to unusual and aerodynamic shapes, the containers ran the gamut, according to Ms. Marinaro. The Egg Drop experiment is a classic experiment, attempted countless times in innumerable classrooms around the world for decades, if not longer, with few variations.
“This is a great experiment to help students connect concepts of physics concepts with their everyday life,” said Mr. Hynes. “It’s authentic learning at its best.”

As you can see, choosing a mortgage type can be complex and daunting in determining which setup is right for you and your transaction. This is why it is recommended to consult with a real estate attorney to ensure that the mortgage note is complete and error free, and to provide you with a mortgage advice that is right for you. “April Showers Bring May Bocks” by Matt Connelly
As the local temperatures continue to climb, the dark and boozy Stouts and Porters that I consumed all winter seem less desirable by the day. I’m naturally inclined to want something lighter but, as I’ve stated in earlier columns, preferably avoid the s watered-down lagers that dominate the American beer market. Unlike its darker and malt-forward Bockbier predecessors, the Maibock is brewed with pale malts and is more aggressively hopped to produce a crisp and refreshing springtime beer. Despite its golden color, a Maibock typically ranges from 6.5% to 8% ABV and pours with a thick and creamy white head. The most highly-regarded American Maibock is the “Dead Guy Ale” produced by Oregon’s Rogue Brewery. Shore Recipes Chicken salad is not a food I would ever order at a deli, and once you taste this one you won’t either. This is not your typical…. too white, too mushy, too much mayo chicken salad. My clan requests I make it at least once a week for lunches and I’ve taken it to summer picnics and gotten rave reviews. Serve it on toast, croissants, or in lettuce wraps as a gluten free option. If you add a slice of crispy bacon or melt some sharp cheddar on top, you will never look at chicken salad the same again.
Chicken Salad
2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts- about 1 ½ lbs. Place chicken in medium saucepan and cover with water. Add a generous sprinkle of salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, Mrs. Dash, paprika and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Simmer for 35 minutes until very tender. Allow chicken to cool in the water so that the meat reabsorbs juices lost during the cooking process. Trim any visible fat and shred with 2 forks. 1/3 cup chopped walnuts (optional) ½ cup finely chopped crispy tart apple ½ cup mayo (Fuji, Honeycrisp or Winesap variety) 2 TBSP Woeber’s Champagne dill mustard ¼ cup white onion finely chopped (about ½ small onion) 1 TBSP apple cider vinegar 1/3 cup dried cranberries salt and pepper to taste 1/3 cup finely chopped celery (about 1 stalk) Mix all ingredients with shredded chicken. Chill for several hours before serving for best taste. Enjoy! Do you have a recipe that you would like to share with 08742 Living readers? Making the Drop by Eric Beyer
When Steve asked me to write a column for his publication, 08742, I loved the idea! I figured that I would spread a little of the local Surf Culture from our area. Here’s my 1st story with more to come…Enjoy!
Sorry if there are any inconsistencies, but that’s straight from Ted’s mouth as he recalled things... there was more, but a different story for a different time. Some years back, Ted asked me to print some commemorative tees...for the Bay Head and Mantoloking shops only. We went over to his Mantoloking house and he peeled an original Islander’s sticker from the upstairs window (I still have it) and told me to print some up...we added “remembered” of course. We did them a couple of times over the years, as many of the old time locals asked for a re-print, I figured it was good timing. Owning a shop in Bay Head for almost 20 years, I’ve heard so many stories about the local shop and have seen quite a few boards from there...mostly Hansen’s.
When I opened the Beach House in 1996, on Mount Street, I wasn’t sure of Bay Head’s Surf Shop history. As that first summer progressed, I began to hear stories about the Islander’s, the characters that owned the shop and the effect that it had on the local surf scene back then. The original Islander’s was owned by twin brothers, Ted and John Robinson. The Bay Head shop (located where Andi’s is now) was the cornerstone location and was around from 1964 to 1971 from what Ted told me. During the summer of ‘96, I became good friends with Ted, he’s an awesome guy...never met his brother. Ted lived on Princeton Ave. in Mantoloking, but sold the house a bunch of years ago. He now lives outside of Boston and takes many surf trips to Block Island in his small airplane.
I’d love to hear more stories, so share them if you’ve got them. Tees are available at the shop for sale and we can send them out if needed. Keep the Faith and have an awesome day! Eric & Sandi Beyer
They opened the Islander’s in 1964, 1st in Bay Head, then Mantoloking as well. They had several other short lived locations in Ortley, Ship Bottom and possibly others. They had 1 in Long Branch for some years... how and why this one was opened is a cool story in itself. They ran the shops while they attended college....1 at Yale and the other Harvard...really smart dudes....1600 SATs and all. Anyhow, they closed up the Bay Head and Mantoloking shops in 1971, but the Long Branch shop remained open. The Long Branch shop was being managed by Vince ‘Peanuts’ Troniec... they sold that shop to him and he ran it for quite a while until they changed the highway and the shop had to be torn down.

excess of the initial outlay. The term “Return on Investment” (ROI) is the one to grasp. With my business client, for example, what he spent on legal and accounting fees to properly structure his business could have been the only expense: Instead his hubris resulted in those fees plus a tax bill and additional legal and accounting fees that could have been completely avoided.
Yet, entrepreneurs do so every day – and always to their detriment. They cannot understand why their website does not “work” or why the coupons they issue do not attract new customers. They cannot understand why they are being sued or why they cannot retain great employees. They do not know how to decrease their tax liability or increase profits exponentially.
