Back to school means an easy breakfast or snack, but I am working hard to rid the family of store bought processed foods laden in fillers and preservatives. These are hearty, low in added sugar, and go together in minutes. I make them gluten-free for my GF family members, but the flour is easily swapped out if you prefer.

A sprinkle of turbinado sugar before baking or drizzle of cream cheese glaze gives the flavor of indulgence, while keeping sugars lower than most store bought varieties.

This has been going on since at least the late ‘70’s and as a result the confidence people hold that they do know how to feed themselves has tanked. Why wouldn’t it?

People eat what they’ve been told is healthy only to watch their weight mysteriously rise and rise. Almost 70% of our population is overweight. Wow!

September is almost here and with it a new start for many. January is technically the start of a new year but September works.

We tend to get back into routine that has gone off the rails with summer fun. People tend to feel energized to start a new way of eating. Here’s where things tend to get a bit confusing. Many people have a preconceived notion about how they “should” be eating. Problem is if you could be eating that way you would. The question to ask yourself is why are you holding on to the “should” of a certain way of eating?

There are so many reasons to hold onto a “should”. Maybe you are confused about how to eat healthy. Why wouldn’t you be?

Many people think they are experts in nutrition. Keep in mind a couple of things as you listen to people or ads talk about why you “should” eat as they do or as they advise. First, nutrition is not one-size-fits-all. What works for your best friend may be a horrible fit for you for more reasons than I can put in a book. People are all sizes and shapes and have many physical needs. There is no way a set diet works for everyone. Actually, it rarely works for anyone. This leads me to the second reason you may want to rethink your “should” when it comes to eating. Lots of people and companies makes lots of money off trying to make you believe you do not know how to feed yourself. You have been gas lit by the food industry, the sugar industry, the diet industry and the government (and I don’t just mean right now!). For more information on how terribly we have been misled about good and healthy food choices Watch Prime’s “Fed Up”. You can also pick up Marion Nestlé’s book called, “Food Politics” or “Fast Food Nation” by Eric Schlosser. What a wake up call! For those who haven’t seen “Fed Up” or read up on the deception by the aforementioned entities, I highly recommend them.

Have you had enough? I have. Part of the work moving forward is to rid yourself of the beliefs imposed by the deceptiveness of those who have gotten rich off your food choices. There is no magic bullet for weight loss. There is no processed food that is good for you. The less processed the better. Eating whole foods when you are hungry and stopping when you’ve had enough is the best way to get yourself on a healthy track. It sounds easy but I guarantee some of the beliefs you carry about weight and eating will get in the way of you achieving your goal as will the plethora of junk food at your disposal. But have faith! Keep at it!

Make small changes and plug away. Get yourself educated on the deception and how to eat healthy for yourself. Call a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist if you have questions. September is a great time to make eating well a routine.

Rover Rescue Dealing with Separation Anxiety

Dogs are social creatures. While they all have individual personalities, as a whole they generally enjoy being around people. Separation anxiety in dogs is a substantial issue. Most of us work full time jobs and have other time commitments. Ending up in a shelter is very dangerous for a dog suffering from separation anxiety. Even in situations where staff can recognize the condition, many facilities are not equipped to deal with it.

Separation anxiety presents itself in different forms. Some dogs will bark or howl excessively, others will go to the bathroom inside and may even eat it. Chewing on things, clawing at household objects, and escape attempts are another sign. These behaviors destroy things, can hurt a dog’s teeth, scratch up paws and faces, and break nails. When in such a frantic state, dogs don’t notice the pain. All they care about is getting to their owner.

It’s difficult to pinpoint what causes separation anxiety in different dogs, though the culprit is typically a lifestyle change. This could include moving, time changes in both human and dog schedule, or a family member leaving or entering the household for the long term. There isn’t a foolproof cure for separation anxiety; it’s a condition that needs to be managed.

If the anxiety level is mild, there may be a chance to work on conditioning with a dog.

This could include creating positive associations when a human leaves, such as giving favorite toys, treats, or a frozen kong to chew on. Enough physical and mental stimulation, such as a simple training session and a long walk before leaving for work could also help. Some vets suggest supplements or medication. If a dog’s anxiety level is too high to focus on anything except getting to it’s person, rewards and exercise may not be enough. While medication can still help, it isn’t always ideal to keep a dog on it for life.

Dogs with separation anxiety tend to get overlooked in shelter, but they aren’t unadoptable. Their ideal home may be someone who is retired, works from home, people with opposite schedules, many people under one roof, or someone who can bring their dog to work with them. There is also the option of doggy daycare or someone coming to walk the dog during the day. In some cases, having another dog in the home may be enough to keep a dog company until its humans get home from their days.

Not every home is suitable for dogs with separation anxiety, but those in the right circumstances might consider adopting or fostering a pup that struggles with this issue.

There are plenty of online resources and in person trainers who can help make the dog’s transition into a home as peaceful as possible.

These dogs really want to be around their people, and there are many dedicated individuals working each day to give them a chance to do so.

Shore Decor Taking It Inside

and inspired (because lets face it, it’s sometimes hard to write that proposal when you’re exhausted and the sofa/your fave HGTV show is calling). Others want their home to be a restful haven, a respite from the outside.

I was reading an article the other day that stated “consumers don’t want fad interior design trends, they just want to update their homes”.

Couldn’t agree more. Might I add that the whole interior design process falls within the highest level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Self-Actualization) where you’ve already met the basic needs for shelter, safety and tidiness and can now focus on expressing your most creative self in your space. The bond between interior design and our emotions has gained much attention in the last decade and many studies now prove that you can achieve greater love, peace and happiness by how you arrange the objects and elements inside your house.

3. What other places have I been that have given me similar feelings to how I want to feel at home? This is where you need to look deep inside and as you’re looking at those design pics or paint colors ask your self how do these make me feel? Is it how I want to feel in my home? Is a Catskills inspired lodge my zen dream? Or is Coastal chic my comfort zone?

Color and emotion are so entwined, as evidenced in our everyday vocabulary (“I’m feeling blue, I’m green with envy, she sees the world through rose colored glasses, etc.”.). Color psychology will tell you that vibrant shades like yellow, orange, and green encourage socializing and communicating, while hues like blues, greys and whites bring calm, tranquility and peace.

Warning: this will be a bit of an unconventional article this month, as we’re focusing less on trends and more on you.

For myself and many others, the journey of refreshing, updating or renovating any home begins inside. Asking yourself a few basic questions:

Back to Earth A Prescription for Flowers

Bach Flower essences are extracts from flowers that have a positive effect on emotional imbalances and mood swings, such as fear, dejection, stress, lack of self-confidence and worry.

Bach Flower therapy is a unique medicine system that can change very subtle emotional and psychological states of being. The system was founded in the 1930s by Edward Bach, an English bacteriologist and homeopathic physician. These systems remained an obscure practice of homeopathy till the recent rekindling of interest. With Bach Flower Remedies growing popularity annual conferences, publications of new books sprouting up all over the world to keep up with the increasing number of new remedies.

Though plants and herbs have always had a place in healing, Dr. Bach made a distinction between plants that relieve symptoms and those that contain genuine healing powers.

Natalie Berko These remedies are prepared by gently Certified picking wildflowers at their prime just before Crystal Healer dropping at 9 am. Once collected they are floated in a glass bowl of spring water and let in clear sunshine for three hours.

The vitalized water is then preserved in brandy, vinegar, or spring water. Bach also produced a “Rescue Remedy”, a formulation of flowers that unlike his previous tonics is not meant to be taken preventively.

Bach believed that personality type was the most influential factor in determining a person’s reaction to stress. To each of these personality types Bach prescribed a specific floral-tonic, designed to balance the more negative aspects of each personality, bringing about a more harmonious emotional state eliminating the physical symptoms.

The advantage of Bach Flower Therapy is that not only does it change our very personalities, but it does so through the spirit and the body. While most treatments by necessity focus on riding the body and mind of the symptoms of illness once it has already occurred, Bach Flower Remedies are used to achieve emotional well-being at every stage in life. With all the stresses of modern life these feel good flowers could not be more welcomed.

Bach Flower is perhaps one of the most spiritual therapies stemming from Dr. Bach’s belief in the soul, a spark of the divine, guiding us toward out purpose in life. On deep and intuitive inquiry Dr. Bach pinpointed 38 archetypical soul states and discovered plats embodying these states. Their use helps restore the balance between the soul and the personality lost through the lack of a certain soul quality, thus healing the ailment.

Parental Guidance Enough is Enough

Growing up in my family of 10, I often heard jokes from others wondering if my parents thought, “eight is enough”. Truth be told, if another baby were to come along, 9 would have been fine too. While there were many years when life was crazy and finances tight, we always got by. Even when an unexpected guest showed up for dinner, there was always enough room at our table, and enough food to be enjoyed.

Somehow, my parents knew just how much would be enough.

Enough is ambiguous when it comes to accounting, and often thought of inadequate in today’s world of excess. Enough is not awesome, or amazing, or extraordinary. It is quite simply, enough. In 1979*, it was enough for a child to start first grade if they could count eight to ten pennies correctly, try to write some letters and numbers, tell the right hand from the left, and travel the neighborhood of 4-8 blocks to the store, playground or friends house. Yes, you read that correctly. 6 year-olds were walking to stores and maybe even counting the change correctly. Fast forward to today. According to WebMD, the typical 6 year-old will be reading short stories and leveled books, they are writing sentences and requiring parental controls on technology, and they should be able to direct their focus to a school task for 15 minutes.

While these skills may support academic success, this is no indication of their life skills.

My parents were amazing and wise, though they never acted in such a way. This was only knowledge I understood as I began raising my own family and grasped the importance of balance, in our world of achievement and over indulgence. I was able to reflect back to the parenting skills demonstrated to me by my most beloved teachers. They did this by raising us with enough…. They gave us enough rope that we knew freedom, but not so much we would hang ourselves. They gave us enough free time to create and discover our world, but not so much became bored with life. They gave us enough education that we valued knowledge, but not so much that we ever felt our learning was complete. They gave us enough responsibility we developed confidence and pride in our achievements, but never so much we were burdened. They gave us enough family time we developed sibling bonds that carry us into adulthood.

My parents challenged us enough that we developed our sense of efficacy, but not so much we became discouraged. We experienced enough hurt to understand our own strength, but never so much we became broken. They gave us enough love that we felt safe and had a sense of belonging, but never so much we felt smothered. Home was our place to replenish our bodies, our hearts and our souls.

And when we had enough, it was our job to go out and share it with others.

Last week my mother passed away. Her spiritual strength was unwavering, and even as her body was attacked with cancer, she held steady. She helped me develop a belief and faith, that she is in a better place. I will miss her dearly, and am so thankful to have had her as a mother. I am a better parent and person because of her. She was proud of each of us though not overly boastful, simply saying, ”I have 8 wonderful kids, not a clunker in the bunch”. That was all she wanted in life, it was her “enough”. At her funeral mass I learned her secret, something my oldest brother shared during her eulogy. When someone asked my mother how she had enough to give all of us what we needed, she replied by saying, “You are doing the wrong math. When you have a child your love is not divided, it multiplies. That way there is always enough.”

The Power of Positive Thinking Real Life vs. Social Media Perception

“I wish my life was like that!” Social media bombards us daily with messages and pictures of how great someone looks, how great their life is, or how established they are. We are also consistently bombarded with quick fixes in diets, self-help courses, and how-to better your business ideas. How do you gage if it all works? Are the messages and pictures that your scrolling through triggering negative emotions?

There is a lot of good on social media but there is also a lot that pushes us to compare our lives or accomplishments with those on our feed. I love the social aspect of social media, the actual interaction, the sharing piece, and the supporting side of it. It can be very healing, informative, and helpful.

However, is what you’re looking at real or a perception you have created in your mind?

Perception: Meditation is for people that are calm. Meditation is so easy for that person.

I wouldn’t even know how to meditate.

Truth: Meditation can help you to become calm. It isn’t just for people that are calm.

Meditation may be experienced and achieved differently for every person. Some find that they cannot quiet their mind while another person may be able to find quiet quickly. Because of this, meditation may not be as simple for other people. It’s also not just sitting on a mat with your legs crossed. It can be reading in the sun or making a piece of jewelry, anything that will help bring you peace.

That person you may be viewing on social media may have worked really hard to get to that meditation point in their lives. They are now sharing that accomplishment with you.

The same could be said for yoga. How many times do you see people twisting and holding binding positions and you’re lucky if you can bend and barely touch the floor? We all are targeting towards certain goals and perhaps yours is to do just that, bend at the waist and touch the floor. When you see people doing head stands and twisty pretzel poses, you may wish to eventually get there some day or just be grateful you can touch the floor!

Perception: If I do yoga, I’ll never be sad again.

That person is always so happy.

Truth: If I do yoga, I’ll be happy and sad just like every other human being on this planet.

Yoga also helps to quiet the mind like meditation, but it doesn’t completely get rid of all your negative thoughts. As humans we are created to have up to 80% of negative thoughts per day. It’s our fight or flight mechanism yet we use it too often in small situations and tasks throughout the day.

If yoga or meditation isn’t in your feed perhaps travel or career is. And in today’s social world, we all want to celebrate our accomplishments, share it with friends, family, and followers which is perfectly acceptable. Everyone accomplishes at different paces or at different times. That’s the real-life side and not a perception.

...is what you’re looking at real or a perception you have created in your mind?

We all use social media on a daily basis but make sure you take time to pull away, center yourself, and find your balance. Utilize social media for what benefits you. Whether that benefit is knowledge, a good sale, family photos, or a new hot spot to vacation at. Even if you’re looking to aspire to someone else’s accomplishments, try not to lose yourself in someone else’s social presence. Don’t hold yourself to a standard of someone else’s social media persona when it could have taken them a long time to get there.

As my 16-year-old daughter would say, “Do you.” Let them do them. Just do me one favor. Never start your day with scrolling on social media. It has been scientifically proven to change your mood and make you easily influenced.
